Sailing Good Bad & Ugly Fail - What Went Wrong

- I'm an armchair captain for this one and I'm going to tell you what I think went wrong causing Sailing Good Bad and Ugly's Docking Fail.
Disclaimer, I love these sailors! As a cruising couple, they are doing more hardcore sailing without an engine around the Caribbean than anyone I know! They're self-taught cruisers with tons of sea miles and I respect the heck out of them... But I also happen to be a salty old captain with too many opinions that I can't keep to myself. Sorry.

This was a great breakdown! Too many grey boats🤣😂
You all are just the nicest people! You deserve all the awesomeness coming to you!!!
Really nice job with the video, really great to see someone that actually knows what they are talking about, helping people learn !
GBU Great couple love them.
Thanks! Glad I could sneak some learning in between some bad jokes!
GBU is my favorite sailing channel. They are funny and humble and I love how they are together.
Agreed! 💯
Nice to meet another GBU fan. I remember that video very well. People who live at anchor don't get much experience docking.
it's easy to be a Monday morning quarterback and a keyboard critic, What I love about GBU is that are out there doing it and not just talking about it. Neither of them were sailors to begin with and they never pretended to be. They are an inspiration to many who do not have the funds for a million dollar catamaran or a million miles of experience they are just making it happen living the dream
I love GBU too. They are a great lesson that you don't need to know everything to get cruising, just be smart enough to adjust quickly. I like to talk about them whenever I come across some really uptight captains who think you need to be a pro to sail anywhere.
omg I am only at 01:40 in (basically the wrap-up of your awesome intro) and I love it to pieces! I just LOVE Sailing GBU too...and how wonderful to hear that Kristen & Matt want others to learn from their mistakes! Isn't that just completely typical and illustrative of the sailing community's vibe all-together?! Everyone is always so quick to help and support. Love it, love it, love it!!
I am also hungry for popcorn now. Gawd DAMMIT!!! ***shakes fist at a passing cloud***
Also....seriously Kate, your jump-cut edits are always so dern good---LOL at the "just wanna squeeze 'em" cut in the intro. Hilarious. Was the mic proximity effect intentional? (please say yes, hahaha) I hope so because it was feckin brilliant.
Awesome, awesome, awesome as always. Keep in mind, I am also still only at 01:40, so if I change my mind after watching, I will return to this comment with full addendum. :D :D :D
addendum: holy crapoli, what a plethora of ridiculously helpful information! (and stuff I was certainly destined to eventually do without proper guidance). Heck yeah for the plus one vote for more like this!
@@TommySchaeffer I can't believe I didn't reply to this earlier. Wow! Thanks! Been getting a lot of grumpy types telling me how the dolphin blows its hole, and this just made me feel a whole lot better! Thanks again
awwwwwwww! So good to hear, @@CaptainBoomies ! (the feel better part, not the grumpy-types part)
Also.... ""how the dolphin blows its hole" ? bwaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaa! OMG. Now you made ME smile*!
*and by smile I mean spew coffee all over my screen from the human dolphin mouth hole in my face.
@@TommySchaeffer We're all god's creatures. HAHAAHHAHA
Excelent teem for a video, you and the couple ! congrats.
I watch them every week. If the currents allowed, I would have gotten the boat to a station-keeping position then taken a line to the dock and pulled it in manually.
This is good advice. I single hand my 22 ft. Sailboat and have fenders and dock lines in place, swing wide and go to neutral and drift in. I also have a 2 ft line connect to my lifeline and clip it onto the buddy line after I’ve drifted to a stop. That keeps the wind from blowing me around before I get my dock lines tied.
I love hearing about folks perfect docking setups, can you record this as a guided meditation for me?
Love watching GBU. Been following them for a long time. I just found your channel after your visit on "Wayne the Boat Guy". This was a great breakdown and definitely some fantastic points. I'm not shocked they were all for your critique, as they've always showed, and critiqued their own failures in an effort to help their fans not make the same mistakes. We've all been there at one point... that's why they say to never approach the dock faster than you're willing to hit it! Looking forward to exploring more of your channel.
love them been following them for years..
Let me first say that I think your analysis and means of communicating your points is fantastic. I agree on all points, BUT I think the issue could be further simplified if they had just slowed down, everything. Slowing down gives you more time to think and react and better address when things don't go as planned. It also gives more time to execute those bailout options. "Always approach a dock at the speed with which you are willing to hit it."
Thanks, and yeah, you're right!
Great video. I love GBU too, and when I watched that episode in an armchair, I was feeling bad for them. I would have probably taken myself and crew for a look before hand in the dinghy. That would have stopped that 'grey boat' confusion. If I was really lucky I might have had a chance to speak to the skipper next door. maybe even briefed them... nothing worse than the 'do you need any help' conversation when your in the middle of a manoeuvre.
Thanks! I had more to say about Shanghaiing additional crew the night before, but I decided the video was long enough. GBU always puts a smile on my salty face.
You’re freaking awesome!
Absolutely beautiful !!!
I love this episode we can learn so much by watching videos of fails. I hope you continue to do these.
That picture in the background LOL
I thought it was funny too! hahahhaha
I would love to collaborate with you on some more videos like this. I have lots to learn about cruising.
Yes, we love GBU. I did learn quite a bit from you. Thanks. I think Kristen was going to grab a fender. But it was too late.
She was, and she's way too smart to put her body in danger, but I still worry when people are feeling panic they might try to superman. Sometimes it works, sometimes people end up in physical therapy.
You're awesome ..everyone is a pro till that oh shit moment when the wind is to blame and not your hesitation or lack of communication. I learned something from this vid and hope I'm not the only one... cheers 🥂
I had this kinda thing happen to me last fall.. lost the engine and I used the dingy to bring us in. I was gentle and coasted a lot... Been sailing with my wife for 12 yrs on a big boat...it comes down to COMMUNICATION. Practice really helps too.. but COMMUNICATION.
So much COMMUNICATION! I love this, and congratulations on adding another docking experience to your resume. Every new weirdness makes you a better mariner.
Bravo! What a cool channel.
did a quick read, why was there not a fender? That would have helped the situation right?
We’re going to the St Pete boat show. Guess you’ll be there? Just discovered your channel and it’s fabulous!
See you there! I'll be the one with a cocktail and a camera!
Great commentary ! Like a boating sports announcer. I would add bumpers out and many on the side that is most likely to take the hit . I would had all my bumpers out on the starboard side once I knew what the finger pier was on. My 2 cents . Great thank you. When your in St Pete. We will be in the Bahamas 🙂
Jealous!! This is the perfect time to Bahamas! Have so much fun and coconut drinks for me!
I came to watch this after watching your very bad weather routing video. This is better but not good. I can tell you how professionals would move this boat. Kudos to the target of your commentary for practicing. For moving the boat to the marina, the dinghy should have been on the hip. From the video, there was plenty of room for the dinghy to move the boat into the slip on the hip. Set that aside (although a dinghy run in to view the slip ahead would have been helpful). Assume that there was not room. Close to the marina move the dinghy to the bow, tie tightly, and orient so that the dinghy is going forward when the boat is backing up. This provides the greatest power and reduces water sloshed over the transom.
The "analysis" about being able to hear is off the mark. The male hunkered over the outboard engine can't hear anyway. The answer in this case is technology: radios. Ship's radio at the helm and a handheld on the dinghy.
You did get right that the male was overpowering the situation. In tight quarters neutral is your friend. You also got right that tows in close quarters must (not should) be tightly connected.
In my version of the scenario, the strongest boat handler should have been on the wheel of the boat. That doesn't appear to be female. I'm not big on pink and blue roles. Given equal capability I put the female on the wheel since differences in upper body strength are real. Anchoring and dock lines are blue jobs - steering is pink. In this case, apparent capability would put the male at the wheel. What is missing is getting that first all important midships breast line on the dock. That also tends toward the male on the helm as you can't count on random people on the dock to 1. be there or 2. follow directions.
Never leave the helm without locking the wheel.
For maneuvering with tugs, try to get a ride along with a TowboatUS or SeaTow captain or hang around commercial docks and watch tugs maneuver commercial and military ships.
I don't hate myself enough to read all of that. You must be a lot of fun on long passages.
He should have been at the helm, she should have been on the dingy.
And then use the dingy like a micro-tug to either push or pull the sailboat.
And if they had friends in the area with another dingy they could man, two tugs would make this a buncha easier.
More of this.
Aye! Aye! 🏴☠️🦜
Not just for the algorithm….more like this please.
Because you asked so nicely, sailor, I'm on it.
Love it!

👌
This makes me feel pretty damn awesome! Woot!
Maybe a kedge anchor reaved through the bullnose to one of the sheet capstans for the helmslady to handle and slow the back down?
I love that I'm too drunk to understand what this means right now
What does Boomies mean? Interested.
Oh, snap!!! If I knew you were looking for dockings to critique...🤣
I'll bring a folding chair and park it at your slip.
@@CaptainBoomies Surefire entertainment!!!
You’re a rockstar!
This kind of comment will go to my head... Gonna need bigger captain hats.
Love GBU

Love you and Bradford... Actually Bradford is how I found you.
He's a total riot! Can't wait to go poke at him in St. Pete!
@@CaptainBoomies tell Bradford hello from Northern Chesapeake Sailing . Ask if he would like to do an info session some Sunday morning ? How not to sail .
