That's going to work for a bit, but being plywood it won't last long in this application.. you would be better off creating a box with Hardwood pallets using framing nails.. and like that other guy said a hinged door will help with holding the wood in for less cleanup.. great idea for sure just need stronger material
Yessir as stated in the video this is a prototype. We will be building one with the proper materials. I didn’t want to spend money on an idea that I didn’t know would work.
i like the somewhat sinister look to the flat black splitter. how are secs vs AXIS? if you have an elevation change have splitter on high ground and a IBC tote on low ground. make a metal slide. slide splits downhill into tote.
I think when you're using the vertical splitter. You should back it in to where you were parked. Rather than drive like you were and then you can tilt the bucket back and you can just use your hand and then if you're bringing it off. The weatherist trail would be hanging into the pocket rather than having to throw it up over the side for the. Horizontal spider if you pull just a little bit further out from underneath the compare and and tote your bucket back just a little bit I think it a lot less would follow and fill up to the same amount
Great idea! I like seeing all the diy innovations to try and speed up productivity. That vertical splitter will sure make some nice bundle wood. I am in the process of fabricating a bundler. Probably be into it about $350-400 after buying some steel and all the bearings, sprockets, chain, and a box of stretch wrap.
I think with the vertical splitter you get a lot less trash and rough looking wood and better for making bundles and or just fire wood my self I would not own a horizontal splitter and I don’t know if you know but they do make a rotating forks that you can stay on your tractor and just turn the baskets up side down and empty them that way should look in to it Dude ranch diy has one
Since its made out of particle board you might want to put a water sealer on it so it won't rot. As soon as it rains it will weaken it if its not sealed.
@@FirewoodontheHill It is not plywood and it is not particle board. It is OSB, oriented strand board for some weather resistance for roof sheathing.. Do not "seal". It is already mixed with exterior glue and compressed. The surface will deteriorate but it won't be soaking up much rain. Regular sheathing plywood is better quality than OSB. All steel would be best. Use wire mesh sides for visibility and lightweight. Make the back taller and the front longer so you don't need to restack. A diagonal on each end is needed for a steel frame for strength. The diagonal could be the top of the end panel. The oversized bucket is an excellent idea. You have engineering talent.
What if you close up the open side with a wall that is hinged at the top and latched at the bottom? Latch it solid when you fill, and unlatch when you dump.
great idea .. I had an idea of adding a couple of old door hinges on that 2x4 you have on the top.. screw another piece of plywood to the hinge to use it as a wall /door in the front.. you can latch it on the bottom/front of the box when filling and then lift the "front door" to the top of the box and fasten with a couple of latches on the top facing the tractor when you go to dump .. this would only work if your tractor can support the weight of the full box ... would help in productivity .. just an idea ..
hi there been making boxes for 30 years long before totes , they work great , you can buy a steel bucket like that one for around 1700 , not cheep, your price was better , well done best to all john
Yeah the price point is big but the bigger problem lies in the lifting capacity of my tractor. Wood gives me the option for a bigger lighter bucket. Thanks for watching!
I think that that is a great idea! And I really like my Wolferidge 28 Pro but I sure would like to have all of those VS17s as well! Seems like you can split more precisely with that! Enjoy your videos and hope you have a great day!
If you took another sheet of osb and stood it up on edge, drive two t posts in the ground on each side of the osb to hold it vertical then you could pull your box right up against it and it would keep the wood all in the box. Then just back up and tilt back and the wood should stay in the box for the most part. Again since you're not looking to fill it completely dur to weight this should work fine. Just a thought...
I think you're on to a good idea. Build the next one from expanded metal.(the flat stock with diamond holes) Angle iron on corners. The holes in the metal will keep wood cleaner and it won't rot. Not a lot heavier than the wood.
Good job 👍. Maybe put a hinged (at the top) panel on the open side that works like a dump truck tailgate to help contain the firewood but still let's you dump.
Hey Matt! Seems like you have developed a good system for splitting on the vertical splitter! Like watching your channel cause you are so down to earth!
Just a suggestion but maybe a hog panel that you could remove fairly easily to allow a bit more to be thrown in? And also rocked my Firewood on the Hill t-shirt this weekend. Great video
Yeah I can’t add much more wood or weight to the bucket as my tractor struggles to pick it up now. Great idea though. Thanks for the support and I hope you like the shirt!
@@peteanderson1714 I was just about to say that. I get the saving money part Matt, and it's a great idea, but that OSB don't like being exposed to the weather.

I’m always looking for ways to improve what I’m doing and the amount of time needed. Never stop trying.

I would say it’s a sucess! Worked great. Take care Matt👊🏻
Yessir thanks!
Success! Good for you buddy. Keep cuttin'!
Thanks!
Good to see Everett, is he taking a break from making videos?
Yeah for now but I think he will start back up soon
Very good idea!! Loke your new dump bucket!! Can't wait to see the finished product! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Thank you!
A 1x6 across the bottom of the open face might help with the loose pieces and wouldn’t affect the dumping too much. Maybe?
Yeah I believe it would slow the dump down and cause issues. I would have to add something that would fold down or come out to work.

I’m not sure what the cycle time on the axis is but for the 17vs it’s 3.5 secs
Great idea Matt. Looking forward to the permanent build.

Good morning Matt, how are the brass slides holding up on the pro 28C? Will they last double the originals you had?
They are holding up very good. I’m at like 110 hrs and I believe I switched them out at 40hrs. I haven’t seen any wear yet.
Job well done with the bucket build and looking forward to additional efficiency changes.

Yes those forks are 4k plus lol That’s not worth it and still you have the ibc tote limiting you on how much you can dump at one time.
Since its made out of particle board you might want to put a water sealer on it so it won't rot. As soon as it rains it will weaken it if its not sealed.
Yeah I’m going to make a legit one and seal it. This one I think will fall apart weather I seal it or not. Good idea though!

What if you close up the open side with a wall that is hinged at the top and latched at the bottom? Latch it solid when you fill, and unlatch when you dump.
That would be nice but I have to make the box as light as possible as we will be getting very close to the lifting capacity of my tractor.

That’s a great idea but yeah the tractor was already struggling. I would have to lessen some wait else where to add that to the box.
If you could stack your first row in front, and throw the rest in you will get a lot more I think anyway!!!!
I agree but I’m worried about it drying slower if I stack it.
I'm talking about before you dump it

Well, you've worked out the efficiency of the machine pretty quick, and put away the idea of carrying a hatchett,,,, good machine

On your big wooden bucket thing,,, you could place a couple of slide out bits of timber on the open side, so as to fill the thing all the way up.

Yeah see weight is the issue and that’s why I haven’t bought a metal one. My tractor losses so much lifting capacity with a metal bucket.
Hello Matt, Works well Paint it! 👏🪵🇺🇸
@@FirewoodontheHill : just check the weight of a square foot of each material. I think you'll be surprised...
Try putting a couple straps in the front to help hold the wood in. When you get to where you want to dump it. Just take the straps off.
That’s a way to do it!
Hello Matt, great idea Man. Nice way to make the wood yard work better for you ,and save money right!
Hello and Thank you!

does your tractor have enough ass to lift 2 face cords?
No it doesn’t. A little over a facecord is all it will do.

I didn’t do that or add much support to this bucket as I’m trying to keep the weight down on it. My tractor doesn’t have the most lift capacity.
Gotcha, makes sense 🙂

I started one for big rounds to raise up to my supersplit
Working good?
if you tidied your yard you could get the tractor and bin to face you instead of throwing them over the side doe🤥
This is true. I really need to split all that pecan wood that’s in the way haha.
Reinforce around the top on the inside and the same for the bottom. That should last quote a long time!
It’s just OS plywood so it won’t last very long. I will use it until I can’t keep banding it together haha.
