I have another theory. The 65 XE is in my opinion named to be similar to the C64. The 800 XE is named to be the obvious successor to the 800 XL. It could just be a new product manager (or another country organization) trying to improve the numbers. Changing the badge on an otherwise identical machine is cheap enough to try it - the factory in China doesn’t care. So why not have two offerings - the machines were for the low end market anyway, even in 1986.

if u ask me , atari 400 mini sucks just like the big brother also. once u have an atari 2600 i dont see any need to have the atari 400. the best games are all on atari 2600.

Great job on the video. Nice to see the different motherboards and your sharing interest in the A8's! As I understand it, the reason the 800XE was sold was purely because the 800XL saw unexpected and sudden great interest in eastern Europe and Atari didn't want to confuse people with the new model number so they kept the 800 part of the name. It's only a badge change from 65XE. Yes the XE construction is not as good as XL and here you show how the CN machines were even lower quality than the earlier Taiwan XE machines, but they worked and provided joy and learning to many people. The color difference you saw looks more like the rf potentiometer needs some adjusting on the 130XE. It's grass in that title doesn't look green but looks more blue-green. Unsure though because PAL colors are different from NTSC here.

Interesant om de verschillen te zien. Jack had niet echt hart voor de Atari 8 bit lijn lijkt het. Ik ben blij opgegroeid te zijn met de C64 maar toch jammer dat de Atari gaandeweg de jaren '80 een beetje vergeten werd. Ik heb nu zelf een gemodde 800 XL (s-vid, extra RAM, OS ROM) en vind de Atari ervaring ook echt geweldig! Veel van de spellen uit begin jaren '80 zijn op de Atari minstens zo leuk en sommige kende ik nog helemaal niet natuurlijk. Nieuwe aanvullingen als Prince of Persia zijn ook fantastisch! Nu niet meer zo geïnteresseerd in "mijn oude computer was de beste" discussies, tenzij met een flinke knipoog maar blij dat we ze nog hebben en zo terug kunnen naar een simpelere, overzichtelijkere en in sommige opzichten leukere tijd.

I love my ataris, but not sure I would buy all the permutations. My collection include 400,800,600xl US and PAL ,800xl,1200,1200xl, 65xe,130xe, xegs. I think that is enough.

Hi and thanks for your video! For non-working cartridges, open them in Altirra and set the correct rom type, then save a new version, this one should run! Another tip I haven't seen mentioning is that you can enable artifacting in the CFG file on a per-game basis. Setting the artifacting value to "1" will fix the colours in games like Lode Runner and Panther. You can also force PAL (or NTSC) this way, a bit like on THEC64.

This was a great review. Seems like a lot of work to get this to work properly. I am not tech savvy and wish I had that talent. As much as I wanted to I won't be buying this with all the problems this has. I'm glad you are happy with it.

The lack of that small bump on the joystick is inexplicable. It's standard for all d-pad designs since the NES. How did this get out the door? And I'm also waiting word on proper analog controls, including paddle, trackball and 5200 controls. Heck, Atari is selling new paddle controllers. Those ought to be used on this device. Has anyone tried a vintage controller with a USB-9pin adapter? That would be one of the first things I'd try, because, like any true Atarian, I would want to swap out the stock joystick for a Wico as quickly as possible. Why didn't you demonstrate the purpose of a mod like this before de-modding it? Or if the dataset worked why not just leave the mod in place as it makes it quite unique. You have many other datasets and now have a dataset with 2 holes in it. Personally I think some mods are best just left alone.

I loved my Atari 800XL, the only thing I would want to improve would be RAM expansion (gotta play Space Harrier) and 4 joystick ports for MULE.

i would have loved if the keyboard was functional, but still it gave me a lot of fuzzy good feelings as you unpacked the mini. we had the Atari 2600 with Pacman, a racing game and F15, i think. Thanks for showing the original Atari 400 and 800. Very nice video.

For us in former Yugoslavia ti was C64, ZX Spectrum 48K and Amstrad/Schnider CPC 464. I do not remember that I saw any Atari's before 520ST and 1040ST. Those Atari's were popular but not as popular as Amiga 500 and 1200.

The colors can be adjusted with a color pot so the difference is not that important. You should have made a test against the GTIA fault - I bet, 800XE had it, 130XE hadn't and 65XE... well, both options are possible.

Can't remember for sure, but I think you need a cartridge placed in the slot for 400/800 to do anything other than static.

The two 1010 variants have one more difference. The position of the pause and stop/eject differs on those models, but I can verify the superior quality of the orange label tape recorder. I have both models and Its the one that still works. Now I Dutch guy told me that the ATARI 800 and 400 are common and their prices in the Netherlands are similar to those of the XL and XE machines . You said that they were hardly available and the 800/400s been sold on ebay verifies your claim.

It may that the 800 name was more popular in certain regions? Or that in the west they wanted to present the 65XE as a new product? The XE came out alongside the ST line, the 520ST and the 1040ST. Maybe a marketing decision led to the 65XE/130XE, as 800XE and 1600XE (the logical name being it has twice the memory of the 800) would seem to imply they are better/more powerful than the 520ST and 1040ST... I'd assume as well, that there wasn't any confusion at the time in the markets the 800XE and the ST line co-existed.

This is very fascinating, thank you for sharing. I wasn't aware there was an 800XE model, which appears to be the same as the 65XE. I had always assumed these models were simply Jack Tramiel selling off existing inventory of the 8-bit 800XL, while also keeping with the new case design of the ST computer. My grandfather upgraded from an 800XL to the 130XE, and that's the model I'm most familiar with. It's an interesting design, cheaper build quality (of course), but as this video shows, better than the 65/800XE models. Of course, what would hurt Atari in the marketplace, once again, would be the presence of two different models that would force software developers to design for the cheaper (and presumably better selling) model. This haunted Atari Inc, and it continued to haunt Atari Corp as well. It's a pity, because we almost never got to see any software that took advantage of the 130XE's greater memory capabilities. Also, by the time the XE line was introduced in 1985, Atari was pretty much gone from the home computer market, either due to high prices, the Great Crash, or Atari's association with videogames (even though, let's be honest here, we mostly used these computers to play games). Oh, well. Thankfully, there continues to be a thriving fan community of Atari users and coders to this day, and the software library is vast and well worth exploring. Heck, have you seen Fuji Net, which lets you turn your Atari 8-bit into an online weather channel? It's amazing. The arrival of the retro-gaming Atari 400 Mini late this month will hopefully reignite some love for the Atari 8-bit, and spark interest with a new generation of fans. Thank you for creating this video, watching made me happy as I remembered back to my first home computer, the 130xe and the time I had self learning computer programming language as a child as well as the satisfaction I would feel when the code worked and figuring out when I’d gone wrong

Interesting video. 65XEs are pretty hard to come by in Czech Republic, with 800XEs being way more common. All my 5 800XEs have 8 banks of RAM chips with 8 more unpopulated, so they're clearly based on the older 130XE design, which makes sense as I've never had any issues with GTIA etc. I still like the XL series more - better look and nicer keyboard altough there's also at least 4 manufacturers of them I think, with some having nice mechanical alps keys and other can be very mushy.

The Atari 2600 also had a very rare mat similar to the NES Power Pad, the Exus Foot Craz.

You mix things up here , jitter is a digital artefact but the 2600 paddles are analog except for the button .

So many holes. I could not and did not cut holes in any of my computers. I am also not a fan of removing modulators etc. Thats a orginal part. You say youll put it aside but it will eventually get lost. Part of the appeal to me is using original connections and using it as it was. In my opinion mods devalue the computers. I have already seen people on you tube showing off their latest purchase with retrobright discoloration. The most valuable computers will be unmodified and not bleached.

In reference to you trying to find paddle #1, it always seemed in real life that if you have two choices, your odds of picking the correct one were actually about one in three. Or so it seemed.🙃

Do you use an AVG or a SUBcart? No need for OS switches or memory upgrades. They take care of these "issues" plus in the case of SUB you also get a Stereo Upgrade!

The first Nintendo system almost was an Atari as Nintendo offered Atari the distribution rights in the US. However, Atari turned them down and sealed its own fate.
