Aberfeldy Distillery Exclusive 19 Year Single Cask Review - How Much Better Than the Core Range?
Переглядів 173День тому
Aberfeldy Distillery Exclusive 19 Year Single Cask Review - How Much Better Than the Core Range? Aberfeldy isn't a distillery we pay much attention to. It has a core range of terribly presented 40% whiskies and mostly goes into Dewar's. This distillery exclusive, single cask whisky I personally brought back from the distillery is 52%, bourbon matured, with none of the children, filtration and f...
Bunnahabhain Distillery Exclusive Single Canasta Cask Review - 6 Year Aged in Cream Sherry Butt
Переглядів 18714 днів тому
The channel is turning 2 Years Old, and to celebrate I've opened a distillery exclusive, single cask whisky I personally brought back from the distillery in Scotland: 61%, aged 6 Years in a Canasta Sherry Butt (canasta is a sherry blend of dry oloroso and sweet Pedro Ximenez). In this video, I will review this very special whisky, and I announce the Bunnahabhain I'm going to open and review whe...

Mortlach 18 Review - Discontinued in 2018 Along With The Rest of the Core Range. What Happened?
Переглядів 174Місяць тому
This 18 Year Mortlach was part of the core range launched in 2014 ... until it was discontinued in 2018 and replaced by the current core range (including 10, 14 (travel retail), 16, and 20 Year releases). It's the usual Mortlach 43.4%, and we assume it's chill filtered with the fake color added. It also came with a pretty significant price tag. In this video, I'll unpack what happened with the ...
Glenkinchie Distillery Exclusive Review - Limited Batch Matured in Hogsheads and Brandy Casks
Переглядів 230Місяць тому
This Distillery Exclusive, identified as one of a batch of 6,000 bottles, was released in 2021. It's Non Age Statement Glenkinchie bottled at 48% ABV and matured in Hogsheads and American Oak Brandy Casks. Glenkinchie is Diageo's Johnny Walker-branded Lowland distillery, a short drive from Edinburgh and known as "The Edinburgh Malt." How does this exclusive relate compare to the standard 43% Gl...
Glenmorangie 12 Year "The Accord" Review - Travel Retail Exclusive Alternative to the Lasanta
Переглядів 333Місяць тому
The "Accord" is a sherry and bourbon matured Travel Retail Exclusive (the core range 12 Year "Lasanta" is bourbon matured and sherry FINISHED...) with a sub-optimal presentation: 43% ABV, chill-filtered, and fake color. BUT: it comes in a 1 liter travel retail bottle at a very reasonable price. Is this a bargain, and how does it compare to. abetter presented Glenmorangie, the 14 Year, 46% Quint...
Bruichladdich Octomore 14.3 Review - Cask Strength, Highest PPM, Islay Barley - Compared to 14.2!
Переглядів 537Місяць тому
It's Octomore-Tober! It's the end of the year for the 14s, as the 15s are now out on shelves where in the US. To celebrate, I'm reviewing Octomore 14.3 AND comparing it in a head to head tasting with 14.2... Octomore is the highest (by peat content on the malted barley) scotch whisky, and is bottled at near cask strength. What makes it really special is how drinkable and rewarding it is. There ...
Laphroaig Lore Review - Is it Worth its Price Tag & How Does it Compare to the Quarter Cask?
Переглядів 728Місяць тому
The Laphroaig Lore is 48% Non Age Statement Laphroaig from a vatting of Quarter casks, European oak, bourbon, and sherry casks. The rumors say its made up of whisky between 7 and 21 years of age, but, of course, that's not official, and we have o information of the ratio of the younger to older whisky in this vatting. Nevertheless this NAS Laphroaig comes with a price tag of between $130 and $1...
My 3 Steps for Beginners Buying Whisky at the Duty Free Shop - And I Taste MACALLAN LUMINA!
Переглядів 6182 місяці тому
Buying whisky at the duty free shop at the airport is daunting: there are lots of bottles, none of them are very familiar, and it's hard to know if you're getting a deal. In this video, I share the three things I look for when shopping for whisky at the duty free shop to avoid overpaying for something that underwhelms, or isn't worth hauling back on my flight. I also touch on Macallan's updated...
Ardbeg 8 Year "For Discussion" Review - How Does it Compare to Ten and 5 Years? & Vs. Lagavulin 8!
Переглядів 3852 місяці тому
The Ardbeg 8 "For Discussion" was originally a 2021 Committee Release, but it's still hanging around, readily available for a reasonable price (just over $60 USD, after conversion)... in the UK. It's non chill-filtered, no color added, 50.8% ABV, and - unlike other committee releases - has an age statement. So, why were people alarmed when this whisky was first released? I'll explain in this vi...
Blair Athol 12 Year Review - "Flora & Fauna" Hidden Gem from Distillery Mostly Producing for Blends?
Переглядів 5372 місяці тому
Blair Athol mostly produces whisky for the Bell's blend, but does this "Flora & Fauna" 12 Year release reveal a whisky from an overlooked distillery that's worth knowing? It's the usual sub-par Diageo presentation (43%, Color Added, Chill Filtered), but I was intrigued enough by this release to bring a bottle home from the distillery. In this video, I taste, review and rate this whisky. Mark yo...
Mortlach 14 Year Review - Travel Retail Exclusive "Alexander's Way:" hidden gem or duty free filler?
Переглядів 3772 місяці тому
This 14 Year age statement Mortlach is a travel retail exclusive that fits in the core range above the entry-level 12 Year, and below the 16 and 20 Year releases. This 14 Year is the same 43.4% ABV as the core range releases, and results from the same unique "2.81 times" distillation process Mortlach is known for. Unfortunately, it has the same weak Diageo presentation as the core range. So, is...

Glendronach 21 is 360 over here I thought it was supposed to be half the price of Macallan 18 lol
Just stumbled onto your channel. Love your content! Just subscribed
Welcome aboard!
To be honest, I wouldn't waste my money on this. Get the 10 and the isla barley 10 for about the same price. It's not worth the upgrade.
Fair enough. Those are 2 great bottles...
Great idea and amazing bottles in each price range. My take, there are some good bottles under $150 but great value bottles under $100 IMO. I would add Craigellachie 13 in under $60 bracket. Happy Holidays Tim!
Thanks! Good call.
black art is 650 in US? jeeeeeeeez i get it for 350 in Germany, i should start an Whisky Export^^
Sounds like a good buy. Enjoy!
If you are able to make shippings to Argentina im in
Here in New England, I wish I could get the anCnoc 18 for $125. Haven't found it for under $150 (still worth it). But I can get the Cask Strength Bunna 12 for around $90. Weird how prices fluctuate between locales. A lot of good choices on this list. Happy Holidays and Cheers!
That’s a buy on that CS Bunna. Enjoy!
Love the idea and I know many people can buy into the almost $700 range. For me, that' insane so I scrubbed to the under $200 and enjoyed the rest! Great list and solid choices. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, it’s crazy. I just do these high price levels for fun …
What a way to celebrate 2 years Tim! I think I may have brought a 200ml bottle of this back from Scotland as well! Really enjoyed the Canasta Sherry Bunnhabhain releases including the 2023 Feis Ile. Very cool stuff. Cheers buddy, excited for what the future has in store for your Whisky Whereabouts 🥃
Appreciate it. They know what they’re doing with sherry casks. Cheers!
What's the most you could justify paying for this bottle? I've finally found them on the shelf again but the price is $500!
It’s a special whisky (at least it was when they were putting older than 21 year whisky into the vatting), but I’ve never seen it over $400, let alone $500. That’s too much in my opinion.
Congrats Tim for 2yrs of entertaining quality reviews ! Cheers 🥃
Appreciate it!
Congratulations Tim, happy birthday Whisky Whereabouts! I've not tried this but I did have the Feis Ile Canasta cask which was around 51%abv. It was an interesting one, very funky, lactic and sweet. This one sounds better. Cheers!
Thanks! Bunna single casks are pretty reliable …
Congrats! Thanks for the notes, it’s getting me excited to open the 2003 Moine Rum Finish bottle I bought from the warehouse 9 tour. Going to finally open it up this Christmas.
Perfect time for peated Bunna. Enjoy it!
Congrats on two years! Thanks for sharing some thoughts on this one, sounded really good. Cheers!
Thank you! Cheers!
I can get the Macallen 12 double cask for $65, so I am staying with that as the others you mention are over that price. Why are other people talking about the Macallen sherry? Costs more money.
Congratulations on the two year anniversary/channel Birthday
Thanks!
Congrats as well
Appreciate it.
Congrats on 2 years!
Thanks!
What about the Chivas 18? Or the glenfidich 15 I think
Great recap Tim. I love the OSWA s. They're fun, informative and unbiased. Me not getting the hype around Kilkerran should not take away from the rest of the voters connecting with it but I'm with you that it is not a value whisky at all! I mean who can find it at the right retail price? I also echo you Best Scotch Whisky nominee as well. Cheers!
Thanks! That's a really good whisky we're talking about in Best Scotch. Now, to check out your recap video ...
Ardnamurchan I think won out because it’s really good and so so readily available. I’m happy Springbank was removed because it still is not easy to find in my area.
I love the Grouse. It's become my go to at my local supermarket when I don't feel like trucking down to my closest Total Wine.
Fun setting and great to hear your thoughts. For an 18, I would have expected more, especially as I enjoy the 16 a fair amount. Cheers!
Yeah, that 16's solid. Thanks!
I've watched half a dozen tastings on the Octo 15.3 and each taster has a completely different profile meaning 1)They are all pretentious BS or 2)Everyone will experience a different taste. I love how these guys will list off 20-30 scents and an additional 20-30 flavors in a few ML of liquid. One guy even was able to taste different flavors on five regions of his tongue simultaneously. I will say though, this is the first time I hear a Scotch tasting like "vomit" (Maybe if you drink too much eventually).
Very timely review for me. The Laphroaig select was on sale a few months ago and tried my first Laphroaig. I enjoyed it, the minerality agrees with me. The Lore is on sale from $225 cdn to $140 which brought me to this video. I think the quarter cask is on sale from around $90 to close to $70? Perhaps my next step is the quarter cask.
Very good values on both. Enjoy!
Dalmore have the same mentality. Pretty bottle with a silver stag. Chill filtered & coloured and very overpriced for what it is. Trouble is the marketing works for them and no doubt this Mortlac 18 will be snapped up also. Profit over excellence is the name of the game unfortunately.
It seems like Mortlach could be more, but there’s no breaking out of that diageo house presentation (unless you’re talisker…)
Nice one Tim! I visited the distillery last month and I was the only one there so had a private tour and a massive tasting (I booked the cask drawing one). I really enjoyed trying this one (right after the 12 and the DE) as it was the first higher abv Glenkinchie I had. When the tasting was done though, this one left me wanting a bit as the other CS and single cask Glenkinchies were much much better! I think Glenkinchie is z really weird distillery in the sense that by design it should make heavy and meaty whiskies (descending lyne arms and wormtubs) but somehow manages a floral and lighter whisky. It's massively overlooked due to only putting out 12 and DE in most markets. They actually make tasty stuff if only they release at a higher abv with more integrity. Cheers mate for a great review yet again 🥃
Thanks! Love the off-season private tour… it’s a shame they’re making too much $ on blends to give us a proper release, since I agree they have something …
3 was 269 at Binnys! It's spectacular and remenicient of a few back in the single digits era.
Totally looking forward to 15.3
Personally prefer ratings independent of value propositions. Price is price!
You and me both
@whiskywhereabouts just got my 15.3
Good presentation, thankyou. I think the Lagavullin 16 yr old has become a bit of a benchmark; I was blown away when I first tasted it. I appreciate your alternative suggestions, the problem is acquiring them. I live in Hong Kong and pass through LHR duty free from time to time and Lagavullin 16 yr is available at an affordable price in LHR duty free. I consume it only as a special occasion treat and revert to more affordable blended scotch (Dewars, Famous Grouse) for regular consumption. Your insight and suggestions are much appreciated. Happy and responsible drinking to you. Slainte.
Thanks! This one's definitely a great option if you can get a value price at the duty free shop ...
We get buy one get one free offer. It’s super good and yet affordable
That's a real value at 2 for 1. Enjoy!
Was able to snag a 14.1 while in London on vacation, was at a random liquor store in Iowa and got the 14.2 for $205, worth keeping at that price or should I sell?
Nice price! enjoy it.
I really like the Quarter Cask and would probably choose that over the Lore on price alone. I did find Lore for about $100 USD at one point but it is definitely overpriced.
That's a lot more reasonable ...
craigellachie 13
You drag way to long and talk to slow
I've started watching your UA-cam videos and was wondering if you have a shareable whisky tasting checklist like what you used on "Tasting for beginners"? Thank you, new fan of unpeated whiskies.
There are a lot of them. Check out the whisky tasting wheels on whiskymasters.org and whiskymag.com, but there are many more out there.
Bought this today and tasted it along with the 12 year. It's great and it had several tasting notes similar to bourbon, is that right?
I don't know that it's necessarily right or wrong, but I definitely get vanilla and some caramel in the Quinta Ruban I'd say overlap with bourbon ...
I bought this in duty free. I thought it would be only good for cocktails but I had some neat last night and I was surprised how good it is.
And it's usually so affordable, I can't imagine how well priced a large duty free bottle might be ...
Just IMO Glenmorangie expressions have gone downhill in quality in the last few years. I wasn't a fan of this particular expression after being able to get it. I'd like to see a better influence for Glenmorangie and Ardbeg - Bill Lumsden is a disappointment at this point with input. Just my opinion! I find Glenmorangie great for beginners on a whisky journey. Not too complex - even Signet has it's limitations. Guess I am just not a GM fan! I always enjoy your thoughts/videos! Have a terrific weekend!
Yeah, this one doesn't seem like it's for you. I think one of the selling points for the Glenmorangie core range is that it's pretty well-priced and available almost everywhere.
Yes absolutely!!
Nobody even drinks Macallan 18 Double Cask. Liquor stores near me can't even give it away. It's on perpetual sale. It's Sherry Oak or nothing.
I agree, the complexity in the ardbeg really impressed me like you mention. Even though the taste doesn’t blow me away, it’s the complexity plus it still tastes good with a generous %ABV that nudges it over the Lagavulin for me. For some people, their regions may price this too high so I always suggest just shooting for their core range instead, cheers 🥃
Can't go wrong with most of the Ardbeg core range
Sugar doesn’t have a smell and you can’t smell sweet
Nope... This stuff is out of my league. I'll stick with the Port Charlotte 10 and be happy with that.
I was gifted a bottle of the 13.3 (61.1% ABV and 129.3ppm) late last year. Opened it in the end of April of this year; taking my time with it so it lasts since I can't imagine spending this kind of money on a bottle and because I really enjoy it. At this moment, the level in my bottle is a little below yours, just at the bottom of the second "O" in the vertical spelling of "Octomore." Some similar notes to yours (I should maybe have a dram this weekend and perhaps hit you with fresh nosing/tasting notes): but what I notice is that plenty of time and air in the glass, as with so many big-peat and high ABV drams, changes it up almost as much as a drop of water does. What always stands out: - The mouth feel. Among the best I've encountered. Buttery, oily, heavy, delightful. It's what I notice even before the flavor profiles. Exceptional and superior. - A grassy note. After about 30-40 minutes in the glass, a grassy note really rears up (maybe part of that local barley effect?)...amid all the other notes. - With a drop of water, a funkiness appears, kind of like an inviting sour note that adds to its complexity. Overall, the several drams I've had over the months remind me that it's REALLY well made whisky. Nose, mouth feel, flavor profiles, lengthy and satisfying finish... But at $270-ish? Man...! Defintely a special treat, though. I feel like I need to finish a challenging, time-consuming task or do a really good deed to earn a pour! Grateful for the gift, and glad it's part of my collection.
You're exactly right. It really is well made and special. It's just a really big price tag. Enjoy your next dram!
The best is 14.1😊
The .1 is always strong.
Good review! I have two of the 13 yr mezcal bottles that I havent opened yet. Guess its time to get into one!
Enjoy it. Cheers!
Great review Tim and good idea to do the comparison. Yeah I love the Lore, probably my favourite of the core range but absolutely ridiculous price tag which makes no sense. Glad you like it as well but I'm with you on that it's not worth it. Cheers!
Thanks! Totally agree.
Really enjoy the lore, but to echo everyone else. That price point is steep, I drink mine as a special occasion whisky. When price is factored in, I’d much rather have the QC, 10 year CS or the 10 year Sherry Oak. All much more value for money.
That 10 Year CS, with the age statement and abv, coming in at a lower price really puts it in perspective ...
I have a couple of different Blair Athol offerings from various IBs that I’ve collected through the years. I may just crack a bunch of them and start enjoying them to see what they’re all about. I hope to get the same enjoyment.
That's definitely the way to have it. Enjoy!
