Tony takes is clumsy handheld skills to The Getty Villa for some video tests. Hooray! My Assessment: 4K 24 looks fine, stabilization works OK. 4K 60p can lead to some aliasing... no like. I cut out some of it but you can still see some that made it in. No idea if its xavc-s to blame or that its binned, cropped, breathing compensation is on, AND I had active stabilization on which crops even mor...

    What is important is how you setup your display and not what transforms you do to the image. Your display should be set up in a way that what you see is what most your viewers get. Same as in sound studio, they have many different types of speakers to see how it will sound on variety of speakers, here you need to see how this will look like on variety of displays. Check how your video or photo appears on Mac, PC, iPhone, Android phone, iPad, etc I wonder what would be most representative colourspace setting on MacBook for image and video editing. Would Rec 709 be something you set your MacBook to?

    • @TonyDae
      @TonyDae 12 днів тому

      First, this is not an intro to color grading video, it is an introduction to color space. Most devices are srgb or rec709. Calibrating your monitor is a color grading must, obviously, but not really the point of the video. Would rec709 be what I set my MacBook to if I was creating video for mass consumption? If I owned one yes. Checking the grade on different displays and audio devices like you suggest is honestly a fools errand. It's impossible to make the image look good on every monitor and the audio perfect for every audio device, and that's why people use standard color spaces with accurately calibrated monitors and professional audio monitoring devices when reviewing professionally developed video products. It gives you a baseline with consistent results and that's it. You can of course try to review on 10 different displays, but that won't mean much considering that displays will differ from person to person, especially since practically nobody outside of production workers calibrates their screens. 3 people standing next to each other could view a video and it will likely look totally different and none of them will even know. Not really with the hassle.

    Hello Tony or others...if I add the Panasonic 709 conversion lut is that doing what you're doing, changing the color space correctly? Thanks.

    • @TonyDae
      @TonyDae 2 місяці тому

      It's a way to convert, but it is not the same as a color space transform. Luts are an individual's interpretation of color given by a specific model camera, lenses, etc. and generally the goal is to provide nice colors. Sometimea the result isn't what you expect because your model and lenses will be different from whatever was used for the lut creation. A conversion using color space transforms is purely mathematical without any personal interpretation or beautification of the color. Neither is necessarily better than the other, just different.

    I work a lot with braw shooting because of it's smaller size than prores, it's also the only way to get acces to the full 12 bit dynamic range of the bmpcc4k sensor, thank im also using ACES as an Open EXR intermediate for my CGI it's well implemented with Blender and Substance painter and designer. Those converting process was painfull in the begining, but when your final workflow is full ACES it became easier for export like dolby vision or even netflix or regular DCP and rec 709.

    ISO 100 = no noise in shadows, high details in shadows but more grain and less details in highlights ISO 1000 = high noise and low details in shadows but no noise and high details in highlights. Everybody who claims this is a bullshit, you actually do not understand the principals how camera sensor works. ISO "is just exposure tool" in case when your image sensor is high quality as Canon C70 from 800 - MAX ISO the sensor claims 100% highlights and 100% shadows. Only below ISO800 you loose highlights details but you increasing details in shadows. BMPCC 4/6K does not have so good sensor and it's always changing better highlights (higher ISO) or better shadows (lower ISO). This is my personal experience, this is claimed by Canon and Blackmagic. BTW: Changing ISO values in post is not the same as in camera. Changing ISO in camera actually changing the physical values of light and shadow sensitivity and you can not do it in post. The data are written. This is why BMD show us the chart. The image sensor sensitivity at different ISO values in highlights and shadows chart provided by Blackmagic show us how excatly the image sensor works. In post you can change just overall exposure but not light stops below or above. And again, Canon C70 has flat line middle gray with 100% sensitivity of light and shadows you can changing ISO how you want the sensitivity is still the same. Of course higher ISO more noise but it's linear. Blackmagic 4/6K has no linear noise. It's exchange between "ha, I need highlights, put ND and boost ISO to 800-1000. Ha, I need clean shadows, turn ND off, lights on and ISO 100...

    • @TonyDae
      @TonyDae 5 місяців тому

      I think you stated pretty much what I demonstrate, except that changing iso in post isn't the same as in camera. That is sensor and data dependent. With the pocket 4k, you get the same image either by changing in camera or in post. The actual captured data is the same. Canon generally bakes in iso.

  • @CornOffTheCobb
    @CornOffTheCobb 5 місяців тому

    What if I shoot ISO 1000 to expose for highlights, leave it over exposed and bring the gain down later. Won’t that give me the highlight details and clean up the noise? Essentially a combo of high iso and ETTR?

    Honestly many DOP's choose not to use LED on people's skins... There's many comparatives on this site about that. As good as LED can be, tungsten delivers a better range in the color spectrum. Ofc video is mostly more "guerrilla" than cinema but it's getting up there in terms of expected quality.

    • @TonyDae
      @TonyDae 6 місяців тому

      I'm aware of that, and many dops use led anyways because of the things it does do well, which is a big part of my argument here. I'm not a dop and the people I work with can't tell any difference between heavy and hot tungsten output and cold, lightweight led output. The statement to never use led is silly.
