thank you for this detailed review. i am basically on the same track as you are, having owned the sigma 35 1.4 and returned it, now owning the 35 1.2 but to be honest, the slower or less reliable AF annoys me even in photography. I will sell it and get the GM.
@@RohannvanRensburg sold it before the updates and have the gm since. i have to say it is crazy how tiny and light the gm is having owned the sigma 35 1.2 before. but to be honest, the rendering of the 35 1.2 is nicer.
Darn it, darn it, darn it, I wish I would have found your channel sooner because. I ordered the Sigma 35mm f1.2. I have other GM glass and I cheaper out, but I will see and I actually own a A7IV, so the focus breathing wouldn't have been an issue on the Sony 35mm 1.4GM. I'm a hybrid shooter and I ordered this lens, three days ago. I bought a used copy for $776.38, including shipping and 753 without. In very good condition. My problem is, I thought about this too long and hard because I own the 24mm f1.4gm and I should have just bought the 35mm GM on the Holiday sale. It will be a 15 percent return fee. Darn it!!! Great video and I subbed. Ivsaw the video stepping issue in manual focus and its going to drive me nuts!!!
I loved the look of the sigma 1.2 as well, even better than the gm (only in other peoples videos when I was researching which 35mm to get). I could tell the sigma 1.2 was having weird af issues and was pretty slow with focusing compared to the other 2 lenses. Also the weight turned me off. Glad I chose the g master over the sigma 1.2. All the reviews just did basic AF tests and pretty much bs’d the speed even though you could tell the AFC was slower.
Very strange to see sigma 24-70 2.8 outperform the sigma prime 35 1.4 @2.8 I was looking for someone to tell me sigma 35 1.4 is perfect lens so I can spend money for one more prime lens. I don’t have 35mm prime Only 24 50 85 135 and 24-70
It's fine, better focus breathing control than any of the lenses talked about here, but it's not a stunner like the GM is. Serviceable is all I can say about that one.
I neither need autofocus, nor do I need aperture 1.2 or 1.4, so I got the excellent Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical which have outstanding image quality, it is compact and built like a tank !
I did not have any issues with the af on the 35 f1.2 it is one of my most reliable lenses. But I definitely have an issue with the weight...
If you didn't use the AF the way I show in this video then you won't see the issue. Also the manual focus is gaaaarbaaaage

Have you found this to be the case after all firmware updates? I heard it improved for photography with said updates

@@Symptomix Good to know. Yeah the GM honestly makes more sense as a lens but the 1.2 has a really unique and lovely render.
Thank you for this important info about the AF issue on Sigma!

Not a bad price on the sigma but that focus issue made it where I wouldn't buy for any price. Sorry you got here too late :(
Either I'm crazy or YT unsubscribed me. I searched for your page for days because I forgot your name. Glad to be back. : )
Glad to have you back!
So the issue is with video then? How did you find with photo?
Image quality is great, favorite of the set. Auto focus isn't as good as the GM but not bad. It's much heavier than the GM and feels like it.
Very informative comparison. Have you had a chance to try Sigma 40mm 1.4?
I have not. If they make a DG DN version I may give it a go.
@@TonyDae BTW, did you check the firmware version on Sigma 35mm f1.2 when testing it?
@@phtius I did, it was up to date. Lens Rentals does a good job of making sure all their gear is up to date and in working order.
Thanks for this comprehensive review. I had already made up my mind about the GM and this review cemented it further.

I don't know about the zoom outperforming the prime, but the Sony 35 f1.4 gm is the prime you are looking for. It's quite a good lens.
i think sony 38 1.8 is a good option though i dont decide to buy yet.
