This part 1 of some of the repair work I've been doing on my 1969 Buick Electra which has a 430-4 engine. I previously removed the cylinder heads and had them rebuild and had the exhaust manifolds planned to get a new sealing surface to the cylinder heads. Well we are on final assembly and I found a major coolant leak so I wanted to show what happened and how to fix it. Also a few more tips on ...

Automotive Post Cat Sensor Code Diagnostics
Good morning Ted, I am having troubles with my Volvo D4-260 EVC-C with CHECK THROTTLE LEVER FAULT. I have had a Volvo technician out many times as the problem is intermittent. The Volvo technician had many theories changes a few things, reloaded software and still the problem exists so I had an electronics specialist come in and he noticed when he would wiggle the communications cable from PCU to the HCU at the HCU he could make the error come and go. We used a test cable between the two and still the problem exists. Can anything be done to correct this issue? All pins look clean with no sign of oxidation. Any thoughts? ERROR codes on display MID 164, PPID 392, FMI 4 Thank you in advance.
That fault is low voltage feedback from the throttle lever Potentiometer in the remote control. I would start by swapping the cables from the port control lever and starboard levers. Then see if the fault jumps to the other engine. if not then swap the cables at the HCU's - this way you test the throttle potentiometer first and then the harnesses from the HCU to the potentiometer. You can also try an autoconfiguration after swapping the cables and then recalibrate the controls.
The technician has changed out the potentiometer and the cable to the HCU. He now believes it is the HCU itself. is this a possibility or probability? Cost of new one is almost $3000 and I don't wish to simply throw out that much money if it doesn't correct the issue. I have already paid almost $5000 with nothing to show for it. Your help is greatly appreciated.
@@FranSan-k9c From your description and the fact that you had a VP tech with a Vodia tool working on this was the right choice. Intermittent issues are a nightmare. And Unfortunately the failed item was the last and most expensive part. And yes, HCU units do indeed fail. Please Do NOT try to buy a used one - it may cause more grief. Also, If a Volvo Penta dealer installs (and programs) the HCU, it will come with a 2 year warranty. After the new one is installed and working, I would ask if I could use it for a demo "bug" for my classes (if possible). I would be more than willing to pay for shipping. Please let me know if this something you would be willing to do. Please email me at marinedoc01@yahoo.com for my contact information.
I thank you for your help and yes I would be glad to send it to you for your help. It may be a week or so out from this point. I am having an electronics specialist hep at this point (much less expensive than a VP tech) but will have VP complete the upfit if necessary. Thanks again.
Are you still running this gen v engine on an oem gm computer or a standalone unit built for marine use ? I’m curious since my truck will read 9500 with the sensor unplugged. Also all 3 wires are working properly unplugged but the signal wire bias voltage is 4.9 instead of the full 5.01 volts like the 5 volt reference is and if I plug the sensor in it drops to 0 psi on the scanner data but now has 3.9 volts on the signal wire which is way high obviously. Also if I jump the signal and 5 volt wire it still has the same data pressure plugged & unplugged as if they didn’t have a jumper wire between them. I’m at a loss but I feel it’s most likely the ECU since I tested the resistance of all 3 sensor wires from the ECU to sensor connector & also checked them for continuity to all the other wires in the connector. Also 2” back from the ECU connector the signal wire is still 4.9 volts so I feel it’s not do to a shorted wire or weak connection. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
@jacobtravis812 it is an E-Controls processor that Volvo Penta uses on the GM Gen5. Being automotive, the gm PCM is very different and I don't know the values used by their PCM. Ensure the connection is clean and try a new gm part. I stopped trying to save a few bucks with aftermarket. Y
@ ok good to know it’s a different operating system so the values would be different. Yea I always use oem parts with everything I do except oil & spark plugs lol. I have my own preference for those. But yah this thing is eating my lunch for sure. Bought a new gm sensor and getting same readings. Reads 0 while in the rail and plugged in but my low side will reach 80 with ease and if I crack the high side line I’d be willing to be a easy 150 in those lines as well. If I plug it into a new sensor that’s not installed into the rail it still reads like 3.8 volts on the signal wire with DDM which should be a lot of pressure but it’s out of the rail in atmospheric pressure but still reads 0 psi on scanner.
I’m having the weirdest problem. May 18 Denali 6.2 will not start. The fuel rail sensor reads 0 while plugged in & desired is 2030. If I unplug the sensor it reads over 9500 psi. The sensor harness plugged in or unplugged - 5 volt reference reads 5.1 volts. Ground is ground & signal is 4.35 volts with it not even plugged into the sensor lol. The signal wire stays 4.35 volts but the fuel pressure changes from 0 to 9500 when I plug it in. Also the reference and ground wire stay good when plugged into as well. It definitely feels like ECU but I need to be absolutely sure. Thanks for any thoughts on this if anyone has any.
Thanks for the video! I didn’t even know there were anodes in the motor!
Thanks for the video, since I know there is a bypass socket for this EST distributor that is for adjusting timing curve needs to be plugged into the module which bypassing “D” and “C” and the lead has come out of “B” needs to be connected to 12V BAT, My question is when I am checking the total advance, is that socket still needs to be plugged in or has to be out?
Sorry to bother you so much, but I keep finding something new, now I managed to delete this large number of errors from the first engine and it started, even the compressor started working, there is only code 11 and the diagnostic light is not flashing, but on the second engine there are codes 33 and 61, the plus for controlling the main relay stopped disappearing, only when I turn the starter, it only knocks, as if the voltage was too low, now I'm checking it. I also don't know why the blue light called sync came on, what does it mean and sometimes the red light active stadium.
Hi Ted, I'm going back to my previous request, only now I did another measurement, I disconnected the entire plug from the controller and connected only the power supply to pin 27 plus, to pin 14 minus and to pin 26 the voltage appears for a moment and disappears, as I described earlier, I suspect that the controller is damaged, do you think so? Best regards Roman.
We hadn't had it one week when it started overheating. Back to the dealer. They were scratching their head, thermostat changed, still overheating, this went on for weeks. They tore that carb apart, (which impressed my dad, and he was a mechanic in the 20th air force, working on carbs for Wright 3450 radial engines, 2200hp), and a little dirt here and there. Still over heated. It turned out there was a piece of metal, from the engine plant, like a wide pop cycle stick, stuck in the water jacket. Never had another problem with it.
Ahhh, engine casting slag.. that was decades ago I remember finding that in a couple of engines - a real head scratcher, we didn't have infrared temp guns back then!
Dad bought a brand new 1968 Buick Wildcat. 430 motor, 4bbl quadrajet carb. Great car, great ride.
Hi Ted, I have one question about changing the coolant on Volvo Penta D6-435-D. I have an expansion tank on the port machine, as the water boiler is heated by the machine. The pipes are constantly mayve clogging or something and the expansion tank is overflowing, the engine has then too little coolant. Only way was to shut off the valve to the water boiler. If I change and flush the coolant, how can I bleed the system with water boiler flow and without water boiler and expansion tank for the other machine? Maybe there is a difference.
Hi Ted, I have a problem starting such a Volvo penta KAMD 44A engine. The plus supplied from the controller to the main relay coil appears for a moment after switching on the ignition and disappears, which causes a lack of power to the controller, i.e. this pin 42, I have checked many wires and I cannot figure out what is causing this, maybe you can help me with this matter and tell me where else to look. Thank you and best regards Roman.
Question, Are there any codes after you try to start it and push and hold the Diagnostic button for 3 seconds?
Well, that's my problem, because I don't have any book about this boat, the boat is not mine, it's my friend's in Greece, and he doesn't know anything about servicing either. I don't know how to read the error codes, I only found a two-wire diagnostic socket on the engine, I do all the work a bit blindly, but I'm an electromechanic and car mechanic, so I have knowledge about such electrics, I base it on information from the internet on your site and my own research. I'm sailing in Greece now and my friend asked me for help in this matter, so I'm trying to help.
If you can help me with this, I would be very grateful
ok, I found how to read the codes, and , on the first engine I have 33 and 61, the engine has stopped starting now. on the second engine, the one that has not started for a long time and the voltage described earlier appears and disappears on it, errors: 22, 63, 26, 33, 36, 46, 52, 53. That's all the errors, maybe they need to be cleared, but I don't know how yet
@romuald7908 to obtain flash codes you need to turn the key on, push the Active Station button and try to start it. Leave the key "on" the push and hold in the Diagnostic button for three full seconds, a long flash followed by a short flash indicates not codes. Write each one down and then push the Diagnostic button again for the next code. Do this until the first code comes around again.
Hi Ted, I have just been on a sea trial of a Searay 365 Sundancer with twin Volvo KAD44 EDC engines. On one engine the Turbo Charger does not operate by control lever. There is a switch on the dash that you have to hold down to make it work. Obviously, this is not normal. Do you think I should walk away from this boat. Jeff.
@jeffsmith1585 that would be the super charger and some boats of 5hat vintage had a tendency to engage the blower when your in odd s3e sta3s due the rpmwould rope too much when going up a swell. That was a fix for such an issue. Not a deal breaker.
Great video as usual

Just saw this video. This guy seems like a very educated man and I don’t wanna knock what he’s saying but he did say more than likely so there is a chance for you have rollers because I have an older style 305 like the first one he pointed out… I have the lifters with the flat edges and the locks on top with the plate also with a metal timing chain cover never been broken into low mileage motor from an 89 Camaro IROZ L03..
@javeryrios3263 Thanks for the info! That is likely true for high performance cars like yours. But fo daily drivers flat tappers were the norm.
Great video. I have a question tho. I have 4 yellow wires coming out of my stator. 2 of those wires have a black stripe. Are those 2 with the stripe indicating 1 leg of the charging system as the just yellow wires would be the other?
@ryanstoxen3190 Yes if you have dual regulators on the engine
Found water in my cylinder. Mechanics asking 12-15k for new engine is that a fair price? I saw a 5.7 online for 5k new engine
@@mmonkeysmile that may be a complete engine. Depends if it's a carb or fuel injected.
@ fuel injected- yes it was complete engine replacement. 2006 in salt water ate up everything
@mmonkeysmile That's a fair price. Especially if it's a brand new complete EFI engine with a warranty. For a few bucks more you may be able to get an entire repower with a new transom assy and out drive. Call around to see what's recommended and stay with merc for an easy install.

Is it possible to change my 96 9.9hp to a 15 hp? It appears that everything is the same, and the differences are the carb, and it would need an exhaust tube.
Yes you can, the 15hp versions used a 1-1/8" exhaust tube (9.9 is a 1")and the 15hp had either a WMC 39 or 49 Carb depending on serial # group

Hola, Necesitaré el número de serie del motor. Supongo que el ECM no conecta a tierra los inyectores del TBI mientras arranca. Podría ser que no tengas señal de RPM del módulo de encendido. ¿El motor tiene chispa? Si no, no inyectará combustible.

Thanks Ted. Great info. I have a 5.0 merc. My last trip Out this year, I got a wending buzzer. I got it outing the water but haven’t had a chance to look at it yet. However, When I drained the oil to winterize, I had oil in the water that drained out. I am not a boat mechanic, but could that be the impeller that has a problem. Thanks.
@@billlackey8363 is this water ine gear lube or water in the engine oil?
Hello. My dad has a boat with 2 of these engines. He would like a cable to plug in a tester, but I can't find any information online. Do you know what cable or adapter he can buy? Also he wants to know when the compressors are supposed to kick in. Do you know that perhaps? He has an error 5-3 and 3-2, do you know what that could mean? Is it possible to reset the fault codes somehow?
EDC diagnostics are done with an old Volvo "Key" scan tool or a newer (Volvo Penta dealer only) VODIA diagnostic software program. Code 3.2 is the charge air temp sensor - it may be unplugged or faulty Reason: Short circuit/open circuit on signal from charge air temperature sensor. Reaction: Charge air temperature set to 55°C (131°F). Engine power reduced, excessive smoke if engine is cold . Action: • Check connections on charge air temperature sensor and control module Code 5.3 Reaction: compressor is not engaged. Action: • Check cables and connections to electromagnetic clutch. • Check fuse (29). (Not installed on the KA(M)D44P-A) The EDC processor grounds the blower clutch at idle in nuetral when the engine is cold (cold start) and will engage it when accelerating. Power comes from a fuse up on the electrical box on the port side of the engine.
THanks. Excellent video,,, gonna have at my 25 hp merc with no spark!
@@ys11-s4f Thanks! Good luck with the fix!
Adding this to my to do list! I have a merc 2.5L 1988. Replaced the fuel pump with aftermarket mechanical a few years back. Have done a lot of repairs and still have a mystery problem. Boat runs great idle through WOT. Almost like it’s on a timer, at 1.5hrs run time the engine will start to stall when on plane, if I get it back to idle it’ll stay there and at that point I can only idle, if I give it more gas it’ll stall again. Wondering if you’ve seen this? I thought it might be overheating and getting vapor lock. After pulling the boat for winter (first time not at marina and in my yard) I figured I’d pull the thermostat when I added antifreeze. Well, the thermostat appears to be from 1988 and was rusted in the open position. So maybe the engine was running too cool and too rich? I’ve got a long winter to wait to see if a new thermostat solves this mystery. Thanks for all the great videos btw!
@johncmoney8394 If you are running it at high rpm for 1.5 hours and it slows down its a fuel issue. I would suspect either a clogged anti-siphin valve or a clogged tank vent screen on the tank vent fitting that exits the hull. This means air can't get into the tank as fuel is being consumed by the engine and a vacuum builds up inside the tank. A quick test to determine if this is the case is to run the boat and when the problem begins, open the fuel filler cap. If the engine power comes back - that's e issue.
@ Thanks Ted! I replaced the anti siphon valve and did new fuel lines last spring. Also added an additional fuel water separator. Rebuilt the carb twice. I’ll have to double check that vent line though. It’s not at constant high rpm. Definitely varying as there are some no wake zones here on the lake. Seemed to mostly occur after long idle in the no wake then going back on plane it would occur.
Checking on the progress. I remember you saying possibly getting a new fuel injected motor and out drive. I have an ‘88 Cobia that could use the same. Curios what you ended up doing. Thanks! Great videos.
@johncmoney8394 still awaiting the fiberglass work to be completed. Likely buying a newer boat for the spring, I've pretty much lost faith it will ever be done.
@tedsmarinerepair8956 yeah I’ve lost faith in marinas out here doing good work on the boat. After 4yrs of leaving it at the marinas for service and wintering we’ve decided to just do it ourselves. W had no luck out here getting anything done right. At least it seems there are quite a few boats for sale now compared to a few years ago. We’ll see if we can get ours worked out this spring otherwise may be going the same route as you.
