My 2009 Saturn Aura (GM 3.6L) car sets an emission fault code for the post cat O2 sensor open or lazy. So I grab my automotive scan tool and start the car and decide to do a video on the diagnostics of this code. Enjoy and hope it helps you understand a little on how emissions works.

Us marine guys work on cars too. In this video I am using my oil vacuum pump to pull the oil out of the dipstick of my wifes 2016 Volvo V60. It has the turbocharged inline 5 cylinder engine. A much easier process due I'm not crawling under the car. The pump removed 5.25 quarts of oil, and the manual says it holds 5.8 quarts so pretty much all of it can be pumped out.

    Hi, I hope it's okay to ask you this question because I can't seem to find any information about faulty governors online. We installed a completely overhauled volvo penta md11c in our sailboat, and although it's running it won't react well to the throttle. When increasing throttle, it will take a while for it to get up to speed. Sometimes, when under load, the RPM's won't increase at all until we press the cold start button, then it will respond to the throttle pretty well. After returning to idle, and increasing throttle, it will not increase RPM's, or will get up to speed very slowly. The mechanic who did the overhaul says that it's because the engine needs some time to run before the governor will function properly. Something about the weights getting stuck and needing some time to settle. Could that be true? We've ran the engine for 3 hours now, changing speeds every minute or so, but not much has changed. I hope you can give some advice or peace of mind or advice!

    Great video! Have you ever seen a problem where a Gen V engine shoots High psi fuel pressure above 5.5k RPM? 3500+psi and doesn't respond to commanded psi?

      @jose38706 the hp pump is cam driven and if the pressure goes above the ecm range, then the issue is likely with the pwm control valve or a wiring issue.

      @tedsmarinerepair8956 yes sir, makes sence. I had 2 things in mind before, either a faulty fuel rail pressure or the regulator valve that's installed on the hpfp. I currently have a p018c & P0315 code and it goes into safety mode when it detects high fuel pressure to avoid blowing the injectors

    What position should the drive be in when installing the sensor ? I have twins with EVC and one bad sensor. I'm afraid it will mess up the trim assist.

    Why does the motor need to be spun? Doesnt spinning the prop accomplish the same thing or is there 2 splines in the head?

    Ted, When I hit big waves, Merc A1-G1 3.0 140 hp, my engine shuts off and has no problem restarting. Do you know what I need to target first. People on the I-boats forum says it could possibly be the interrupter. Any ideas?

      It definitely sounds like an ignition voltage issue. I would start at the ignition fuse at the dash (purple wire) and work my way down by wiggling the harness connections while it's running. Then on to the ignition coil wiring. The interrupter is part of the the circuit but I doubt that's the issue.

    Hello Ted, I installed an electric fuel pump in my 1985 Merc A1 G1 3.0L 140hp. It's running ok but has some issues at times starting when it's hot. Question what is the normal recommended psi for my engine. I think I may have purchased an electric pump that may be too high in PSI. That's why I'm asking what my engine requires. And Thanks for all the great videos.

      Try pumping the throttle if it's hot and won't start (enrichens the fuel) if that doesn't work, try holding the throttle wide open and crank it to see if its flooding - if it starts then yes maybe the fuel pressure it too high. also when it's hot try taking off the flame arrestor, have someone turn the key on and look down the carb to see if fuel in pouring down the throut when the pump is running (not cranking over). ALWAYS put the flame arrestor back on prior to starting.

      I"m not sure what the "Star lock" is. Does it crank over? if so it's fuel related likely.

      @mightyroostercontractinglt8755 being the 3.7l is carburetor engines and there is NO fuel cooler, no. I would suspect water getting into the fuel via the fuel tank. Or tank vent fitting.

    Hi Ted, I work at a shop and we are just getting into EVC controls and im trying to figure out how to hook up this 8.1 GI to run it. But everything ive tried has no different result. Its a single throttle and it just flashes a hazard sign and ive got no response from my key to my AKI and my screen has no display. No clue what im doing wrong

    Ive got the most odd problem with this engine where im having issues with bogging and it running weird .. ive. Did a full service new spark plugs low pressure fuel pump high pressure pump regulator cleaned out vst new fuel line new filters water pump everything... The only thing i can think it might be is the IAC valve becuase ive seen other simular problems with similar synptoms.. but nothing has worked yet

      @adhdgaming2377 the IAC will cause low speed issues not engine logging. If it's surging/bogging I would try running it with a fuel pressure gauge to see if it holds constant fuel pressure in the range it should.

    I have a 1982 115 HP Johnson motor and both stator wires for charging the CDI read about 277 ohms or almost exactly half of the 550 ohms you measured ... almost like they used the center tap off of the stator windings. Do you know if they made a drastic change like that for 1982 onwards?

    I have 2 2005 Volvo 8.1 Gi engines in my silverton convertible and when I go about 2000 rpm and bring throttles down fast back to idle they stall out, but if I bring them down slowly they don’t stall. Any idea? Thanks in advance

      @jasonnester9514 your electric conversion of a 150 lb thrust would equate to less than 3hp. So if your hp does not perform it may have an issue or to big of a prop. There should be a major power increase to a 6hp outboard.

    You have to pull the cable out of the of the outer sleave and just cut the outer sleave with a side cutter instead of buying another tool.

    I want to inquire about consultation re a DPS-B ox drive that is making more clicking noise than the other port drive when in forward at all rpm's and also a different click at about 1/2 second intervals. powers up and performs to spec as to speed of boat max with both drives going; 2013 model; 182 hours; volvo D3 engines; only work done is gear lube changes, new shift cables, and shift seals at outdrive rear; bellows replacement and lube of spline shaft to motor. Last gear lube change a couple weeks ago showed small amount of metal on drain plug magnet and other quiet drive had no metal on plug magnet. Let me know how to engage a consultation if that is available. Considering just replacing drive vs repair and if exchanges are available. Thanks, Garth Scott

    Excellent video - many thanks. A question if I may - losing coolant on my KAD300 - about a cup every hour when running. Definitely not in the bilges. Oil seems coolant free and Coolant seems oil free. Had heat exchanger cleaned over winter, so naturally thought that this might be the culprit. However, pressure tested the coolant system (cold and warm) and didn’t drop pressure at all (did remove the heat exchanger again and had it retested - all good) bit puzzled - any ideas greatly appreciated. Many thanks

      It may be the exhaust manifold to turbocharger gasket is leaking when the engine gets hot under load and then doesn't leak when everything cools and shrinks. You can try retorqueing the 4 turbo nuts to see if they are loose. Spec is 33 ft pds

    I know this is a very old vid. I have a 1996 boat with Volvo penta engine which is some kind of a Ford motor inside. The relay block has a bunch of fused switches (3 to be exact). The top fuse quite often trips on odd occasions and everytime I need to open the engine compartment to reset it. Any idea or recommendation of what I need to be looking at to try to diagnose the issue?

    Hi Ted I recently viewed this video and it was a big help. I was able to get the fault codes off of our 2011 Hunt Harrier. It was MID 187, PSID 14, and FMI 15. In your video you had a book that had all the codes. Is this available somewhere to purchase or download to get the information? Thanks.

      That code is from the PCU which states there is a mismatch of evc nodes. Has someone swapped PCU's or HCU's? I can provide more info if you email me at marinedoc01@yahoo.com

    I hope you can answer me. I’m trying to troubleshoot my electrical problem on my 2012 200hp hpdi Yamaha. I turn the key nothing happens. Battery is charged I changed to fuses starter starter coil. Took pictures before I did any removals. Now it’s all connected I turn the key and nothing I mean nothing. Can you tell me where I should start trouble shooting at. I’ve tested to parts I replaced all checked out. Please any help I would greatly appreciate.

    The reason that bolt won't come out I'll bet is because it hasn't been greased ,I always grease the bolts and gasket on mine because I check and clean it every 6 months, thanks for sharing going to check spark plug gapes

    Just finished the trim sender replacement. Went well. The boat is on a lift so it was a bit harder than if hauled. Followed your procedures. Set the ohms, used a leader wire to pull the new sender harness and did the calibration. Thanks so much!
