  • In this video I show the locations of the clips and hoses on the expansion tanks and heat exchanger on a Volvo Penta 4.3 and 5.3 Gen V engine.
This will make it easier fo you to remove the coolant expansion/power steering reservoir.

Ted, I can’t thank you enough for the video. A little backstory in case someone runs into this in the future. Last winter is when it began leaking. The leak is so incredibly slow. It’s hard to tell exactly where it’s coming from, but it appears to be coming from between the bottle and the plate. Last winter I purchased the O-rings, and got to the point of pulling the bottle off, but it felt like I was using an excessive amount of pressure to pull the O-ring nipple out so I got worried I was missing a fastener. The engines were still under warranty, so I had planned on, adding some UV dye to the system to help pinpoint the leak location and letting a dealer repair it. Once spring rolled around and I got the boat out on the water. It never leaked another drop. The boat was actually at dealer getting an alternator replaced under warranty. I mentioned the leak, but since it wasn’t actively leaking, there was nothing they could really do. Once the cold weather started setting in here in New York I again noticed a small amount of coolant sitting in the bilge. Thanks to your video. I know I was following the correct procedure removing the bottle, I think, as you suggested, I’ll tap in some composite door shims to pop the bottle out of the FEAD. I’ll report back with my findings.

I finally had an opportunity to work on the boat to get the o rings changed. I was able to compress the plastic clips without dropping the fuel pump by using a 10mm box end wrench. I did however need to remove the throttle body to get enough clearance to remove the degas bottles nipple from the bore. The tension I was originally feeling was the back power steering line, it was very tight, but after cutting a ziptie I gained just enough room to sneak the o rings in and out without removing it. I didn’t observe any damage to the bottle or the o rings, I believe the cold weather may be shrinking the plastic of the bottle enough to allow the bottles nipple to leak. I see the original part number has been replaced with an updated part, maybe this is a known problem? I’ll monitor the situation and see if the new o rings have any effect, I also noticed that my port engine is now leaking a tiny bit too. If it continues to leak I guess I’ll either replace the bottles or deal with topping off the coolant in the spring. Ted, Thanks again for all your help, I look forward to your next video.

Great follow up with your work. I am hopeful the new o'rings solve the issue. Keep in touch with any new findings on this.

Good morning Mr. Ted, how can I contact you? I have a big problem with the transmission of my Volvo SX Cobra 1.66. Could you give me the address of your repair shop?

Where are you located? Will you be shipping it? I have a 1.66 gear/shaft set if the case is rebuilable.
