It happened to my 350 purchase the boat and ended up with an overheat engine, blown gasket between cylinder 6 &8. On raw water is it a common thing?

If it gets hot enough absolutely. That's why the overheat alarm MUST work and if it goes off shut it down and have the issue repaired. I got 16 yrs out of my salt water cooled 305 before the cylinder head rotted through.

Nothing lasts forever, Salt water is a slow death of marine engines.....without intervention (maintenance)
