Replace vtec solenoid gaskets on Honda V6

Very common issue with both the 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder versions of the engines on Honda and Acura. J32 and J35 engines such as those in the Honda Accord, Odyssey, Acura RDX and others leak oil from the vtec spool valve/solenoid, and that oil drips down into the alternator and ruins the alternator. OMG. Sludge Fest ! I love. Videos like this.

What stone are you using to sharpen the blade?
Aluminum oxide grinding stone. Good for sharpening cutting tools. Cheers.
I have a problem with leaking exhaust in garage and under house for 30 years. Bought a canister as it is too cold to deal with it. Know a tape that will stick on pvc pipes? No idea how to fix leaks at machine out lets and inlets.🦇
Gorilla tape should work. Also high pressure sealant tape like what you use on a vehicle radiator hose for emergency repair. It adheres to itself and you cut it to remove it with no residue.
@@lmsdiy Thanks for that reply. Probably would not have this issue if they glued it all together. Never heard of that auto tape. Thanks again and I will buy both. Very tankful. Oh, must wait on warmer weather and a helper who can still bend over!!!🦇
I guarantee your motor is filthy
Look at that intake restriction!
I add some MMO to the oil about 200 miles before a change. I also use magnets on the filter and a magnetic drain plug. The magnet in the plug will show any iron particles.
I’m trying to learn how to do things myself, and this video was good, but I accidentally broke the o2 sensor that holds it together, and idk if that’s my problem to my new problem, I can’t put it in park nor take out my key for some reason, that problem happened right after I replace the o2 sensor for the upstream rich to bank 1 to sensor 1
Hey, well good on you for wanting to do things yourself! My opinion is that the “can’t put it in park nor take out my key” issue is unrelated to an O2 sensor. The only things I can think of are: 1. you may have accidentally messed with either the shift cable which runs along the other side of the frame where you were working on bank 1 sensor 1 or the shifter connected to the transmission housing which is that side of the transmission though not exactly where the O2 sensor is, or 2. The shifter (whether shifter cable, connector at the transmission, or shifter connected to your steering column) happens to be an issue independent of the work you did on the O2 sensor. If you can’t put it in park you won’t be able to take the key out, so that is related. Can you put it in neutral and take the key out? I had a similar issue with my previous Silverado. It didn’t perfectly go into park all the time which caused things like not being able to take the key out, not being able to start the vehicle, and doors didn’t automatically unlock when I thought it was in park. Try pushing it from drive or whatever into park more quickly and purposefully and see if that triggers it to allow you to take out the key.
That is not how a transmission fluid flushes done. A transmission fluid flush is done in the engine by putting a quart of transmission fluid in the engine and driving it for about a week. 10 minutes is going to do nothing but maybe flush a little bit of sludge out
Thanks for the info!
I could do with some more lumens, but I especially love this light for two particular features: 1. Unlike most flashlights on the market, it doesn't obnoxiously cycle through thirty-seven useless modes and colors and patterns. It has two modes: on and off. 2. The tailswitch has a momentary action that behaves the same way no matter how long or short you press it, or how many times. You can signal Morse code with this thing.
I agree on all points. I like that it turns on and off. One mode. Definitely could be brighter. I now use it as an inspection light and I have another model (a Coast) for my EDC.
@@lmsdiy which Coast light do you carry?
@ I went with the G19 inspection light. Nothing crazy special but simple one mode on/off, nice circular inspection light, 1xAAA battery, low cost, and very compact with a reversible clip.
@ what about you? What’s a great EDC light?
@@lmsdiy I use that 2105 because it fits so neatly in the long pocket in my carpenter jeans (along with my pen and a sharpie for replying to bathroom stall graffiti)
Thanks for making this video. We have the exact same problem on our 2000 Silverado 2500 4x4 with only 94,000 original miles.
Wow! That’s a truck worth taking care of and keeping! Old school, pre-AFM good quality GMC. 👍
You can try running pure diesel in the crankcase for about 30 minutes to an hour of idling for a flush. You can run a bit of seafoam or ATF mixed in with your oil for continuous cleanup while driving. Another flush you can do is run pure ATF for 30 minutes to an hour of idling on a warm engine. Your noise is most likely a sticking lifter and a stronger flush is more likely to resolve it without opening the engine and replacing the lifter.
Thank you! I started using Seafoam high mileage in the crankcase of our vehicles and it’s done an amazing job of cleaning and solving a Honda high oil consumption issue due to stuck piston rings.
@@lmsdiy People are raving about Valvoline's Restore & Protect oil. I haven't tried it myself, but the feedback and tests about restoring compression and reduced oil consumption is impressive.
Just run the new Valvoline Restore & Protect. It works better than ATF, Marvel, Seafoam etc.
U need valvoline R/P formula oil.
Impact is good for removing nuts only. If you try to tighten wheel nuts, you will have to use a wheel nut wrench. You will screw it up if you use an impact. This is a cut corners and you will definitely weaken a wheel nut or all of them!
Good advice! Don’t over-tighten by using an impact. Suggest using torque wrench for tightening them up properly. 👍
@ OSHA training. Many mechanics still apply this rule nowadays!
Is it Ok to disconnect the ECU in Hondas?
Maybe check with your Honda dealership regarding your model. I disconnected the negative terminal on my battery and disconnected the ECU and reverse procedure when I was done but to be clear, that’s at my own risk and I have a scanner if something goes odd afterwards. I would contact your Honda dealership for advice of this kind before proceeding.
You can use ATF as engine oil also, will work all the time, with engine life enhanced
Drive it with the atf
Very helpful video thanks for sharing.
You’re very welcome and thank you for the feedback.

@lmsdiy for honda pilot 05?
Thank you for that I just cleaned my 2011 Silverado throttle body out and it worked.
Great to hear and glad the video was helpful!
have not tried this yet, will be giving it a shot when its not 15 degrees out lol. in the event that the idle relearn does not work and I don't have/can't afford a scanner what is my other option there? take into a shop?
Yes, be advised that if you end up with a high idle issue that you can’t resolve through the idle relearn you will need a scanner that can reset the idle or get it to an automotive technician.
I've also heard you can disconnect the battery for a few minutes and it will relearn.
I had knocking 75k put in seafoam it fixed it
I do this every 3rd oil change or so. 1/2 qt tranny fluid in the oil, about 6 oz Marvel Mystery oil in gas tank, and run about half a tank of gas. This cleans up engine and injectors.
I drive mine about 300 miles but 1000 would not be unthinkable
my alternator was making that same noise its crazy why it makes that sound, and it just kept getting louder every few days. it sounded like a formula one car everywhere i went i couldnt take it anymore i took that alternator out i check it out, i lubricated that thing with oil really good especially the ends of the small shaft that turns with the belt. now i can barely hear it when iddling and when running it makes zero noise 👍
I’m not exactly sure why it makes that sound either but great job quieting it down!
Yeah, good luck going over the area again and again. Impact drivers run WAYYY slower than die grinders
Four years ago, I was gifted this inspection light. Dependable. Still has the original batteries. I wish it was a little more bright. Also, Kelvin rating is more on the yellow side. Frequently use it around the car. Keep it in the glove box. Space saver. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for sharing your experience with this light. I think it’s an excellent light and very durable.
In my opinion, this is the best video on the subject that I’ve found-even better than others with far more views and likes. It’s straight to the point, with clear, easy-to-follow instructions and excellent communication throughout. I also really appreciate that you took the time to demonstrate how to calibrate two different types of torque wrenches. Thank you for this fantastic resource! 👍🙏
Hey thanks for the shout out and for taking the time to provide your feedback. Much appreciated!
Thank you
You’re very welcome! 👍
Do you have a same video but on a 2012 generation pilot?
Sadly, no... I did see another video for your generation Honda Pilot and it looks mostly the same with a few subtle differences. :) Sorry!
I can see the different between parking my 2008 pilot in the garage and the one in the video, there is no rust on my , but the one in the passenger side is starting leaking , will replace the struts in a few days ,thanks for the video
2008 is a great model/year for the Honda Pilot. Well worth taking care of that vehicle! Good luck on the strut replacement and let me more if you have any questions
what’s parts did u need to buy to replace , i’m not so sure
There are 2 rubber gaskets and I showed the part numbers in the video when I was comparing old vs new gaskets.
wouldn't you want to flush all the fluid? that is very dark fluid.
Yes, I probably should have… 🙂
Technically, you’re supposed to whenever you replace the pump. 👍
Have you change the one on the back too? Similar gasket?
There is no vtec spool valve or gasket for the rear on this engine model. It is only in the front but some other engines have the vtec spool at the rear of the engine instead of the front.
What year/model is your car and which engine?
So 11 fittings. Went to a couple of heavy chevy truck forums, 1st guy said none on mine. 2nd guy said 4, third guy said 6,,,,, a dozen posts down a guy said he thinks 11. Point is Do not ever rely and a forum for information, at least 75% of the people are stupid posting on forums!
😂 I 100% know what you mean…. 11 on mine. Good to go!
- Pitiful! Thanks for warning me! I will find one with the proper hose ...
Yeah the stronger rubber clear tubing I found fits and works perfectly. Just used it again for my rear differential fluid change and it was perfect. 👍
@@lmsdiy - Thank you -
It takes time to clean the engine. Some minutes aren‘t enough. I would Drive at least half an hour or more.
Great video man! I’m going to attempt this soon. Wish me luck haha
Good luck but I’m sure you’ll be fine! 🙂 I will do a video on valve lash adjustments as well. That’s fun and regular maintenance on Honda’s!
Very amazing review. Thanks for taking the time and making this comparison it is exactly what I needed to see. I will be buying both just in case. You look like my old friend from childhood from Palmdale named Glen.
Thanks Aaron. I think you’re going to very happy with both tools! 👍
The first idle was fine for mine then the other rest it was idling at 1500 rpm
Just the video i needed to see. Thanks!
Awesome, and glad it was helpful. 🙂
The problem with hydraulic followers (lifters) is that they only have one inlet port. That means that it's basically impossible to get the old oil out and new oil into them without removing them. They will probably have the same oil that the car was first filled with when new.
Interesting info! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
thank you brother, much appreciated. I bought the entire spool valve unit and paid a mechanic to replace it because the replacement gaskets I got seemed a bit shady. now a couple years later, I'm told that it's leaking again! I will just go this route and replace it myself. I also had to replace the alternator before and certainly don't want to have do that again!
My pleasure. Try to get the Honda OEM gaskets from eBay. Good luck!
Mix ATF with clean oil to flush your engine. Straight ATF is too thin to provide protection on plain type bearings.
The oil color a month later looked dirty enough to change asap.
Yeah..I don't think this old truck was looked after very well by its previous owners. It would have been a great truck with the old 5.3 and no AFM if the engine had been taken care of a bit better.
Is it normal to have some up and down play by the screw once tightened? I'm not sure if the pcv valve replaced was OEM. but it has a little wiggle.
Mine doesn’t wiggle at all. Don’t overtighten because it’s just plastic, but it shouldn’t really move around much…if it wiggles a bit but still stays in you’re probably OK.
@@lmsdiy I cut a piece of flex tubing and used it as a washer on the bolt. Guess I'll try ordering an OEM one see if there is a difference. At least it is snug now.
@@thepiecesfit5049 Good to hear. As long as it’s working properly and staying in there, it’s doing its work. Good job!
