The State of My Drumming, as of 5/524......steady beats?
Well here's a go at some more standard style beats like some of you have been suggesting...at least for the first part.... There's also tommery, and some other stuff too!

Inception of the Thrush

ok, this was a simple plug-in/play/record sorta thing. Starting off with the initial signal processing, but no plan as to how that might shift. The lead line was spontaneously off the top of me head, no outline nor map. Just play and see where it goes....well dang! All in all I'd say it went to a series of different spaces and atmospheres as it shifted through tonalities.... O gotta say, right ...

tgosSo, this one is a bit edgier than the other from this night. Once again, it started with the Warr guitar playing the lead line along with the triton backing loops, and then I recorded the bass part on the 77 fretted Alembic bass. Unlike the other tune(2B or 4B) in this little ditty, the bass is playing a bit more contrary(though still complementary) a part, with more equal footage. Its not ...

this one is surprisingly mellow once it gets itself in order ! Yeah, its a shaky start so give it a minute to find itself.... This started off with the Warr guitar and the triton loops, with the Warr playing what would be considered the lead line, and then I came in and played the bass part just last night. It strikes me that im finally getting a bit more fluid and proficient on the Warr guitar...

April Bass Duet, part vi, Overdubś in 2 out of 3 phases
Переглядів 1814 днів тому
Ok, ok, ok! This one isn't quite so "out there" as the kids of today say, yet its nevertheless built with the same components to a large extent. This section is made up of three phases. The first is kinda tranquil and spacey. The second phase has a bit more bite to it in terms of both the Warr guitar part and its processing, as well as the dual bass lines. For the third phase, both the Warr gui...

April Bass Duet, part v. The Overdubs...first mix
Переглядів 814 днів тому
ok so the mix rather sucks...im probably gonna give it another go tomorrow. Anyways...the new tracks are a plucky upside down fender jazzmaster, and a somewhat heavily processed Warr guitar, which is the main "solo voice" (though in all honesty, they're all soloing kinda like Dixieland jazz, only electric!) And if I do say, there's passages on the Warr guitar that manifest a fluidity I rarely s...

this series started out with me on the Ibanez MikroBass 4 string, playing along with a backing loop off the old Triton. This four part aspect of that has me playing a second part on the fretted alembic. One thing that struck me when I first played it back was a sorta "Jaco & Stanley" feel to the interplay of the two bass lines. Im not trying to compare myself to either, much less both, but the ...

April Bass Duet, part iii

here's more along the lines of the first two. Like I said this series shows some rather good interplay between the two bass parts, both played spontaneously. I've already put down two more tracks of overdubs, Warr guitar and fender jazzmaster, and I gotta say, some of those Warr guitar leads blow me away! I listened to them the next day and was taken aback !

The main voice in this one is played on the Warr guitar, using a two hand tapping technique as well as a fair amount of signal processing, shifting through the timbral progression. And yeah, that's the Warr guitar itself on the left side of the image.

While its not that i dont appreciate your positive inputs, cant you keep time on virtually every component of a drum ? And yeah i get the idea of Standard Practice, but how will you and i revolutionize drumming, taking it to a new and expanded state, if we stick only to the praactices of the past?

I dont know if youve watched any of my bass videos, but theyre all spontaneous improv, as are any overdubs, and conformimg to the norms of what bass "can/cant do" is not something i much ascribe to...

You keep time on the hi hat, ride or even a crash, or floor tom. Bass drum on one and three, snare on two and four.

    • @Alembizoa
      @Alembizoa 5 днів тому

With percussions cant any element be used in that capacity, be it snare, hi hat or catbell? keeping time is an absolute but also an arbitrary construct, and the choice of what aspects and elements shall be stressed lay in mind of the man with the sticks! if you and i are to take drumming to the next level of expanded form, function and essence we're gonna have to break some toms(crack some shells)and reorient the omelette! Take what is known, as a reference for others, and yet restructure the manifestations of beat, groove, and even time itself as we know it! Free the percussionist from rote static forms so as to embrace a creative flow alive with time and beat yet of diverse and varying form! or maybe bass drum on 2&4.....

Of course! And i will comtinue to post my drum progress videos. But are you aware that this channel is mainly my bass improv stuff? ive played bass for 47 years, keyboards for nearly as long , guitar ive played with for a couple decades, along with banjo, ukulele, cello, dulcimer, sitar, hand percussion, therimin, touchboard instruments(warr guitar & chapman stick), as well as recording and signal processing. i got this drum set from my natural mother after she died. it took a while to get it functional, but about two years ago i slowly began trying to teach myself how to play. Gradually building it up to where/what it is today, the set has besn my "project car". you may have noticed that i have close to 1K videos posted here, which took 12 yrs so far, and most have under 50_views. i am mystified as to how a beginner drummer video gets 1.4k in a couple weeks, while bass videos played by 47 years of bass playing dude get 14 views. And while that kinda stings, i am, in a manner, honored you ask me to play anything, but i am primarily a bass player. However i'll get some more drumming videos up tomorrow or the next day. thanks for listening and for your input! Guy

The angle of the drums is ridiculous. They need to lay a lot flatter. If you play on your toms angled like that, you will develop tendinitis in your wrists, and then doing anything with your hands will give sharp, painful agony in your wrists. Go to UA-cam and look up propper drum set up. Not only will you play better it will not fuck you up and ruin your life. Take this advice from a drummer of 40+ years. Overall, your drumming is not horrible, but you can use some lessons and need to learn proper technique. Start with UA-cam!!

If you check out my bass videos you'll see repetitive elements are not really of my sentient repertoire, but its certainly something to integrate into my musical cognizance. I've been playing tonal instruments for so long using digital drum tracks, that I've come to view those as an anchor from which the instruments im playing can then move around, perhaps more freely than the average ear is used to. But in this sense, the rhythms are expressed and inferred by the melodic instruments through shifting phrasings that are directly connected to the beat through a series of steps away from it, like climbing a hill but on parallel paths. Say you have a set beat but continuously rotated which drum played which part of the groove, such that the groove is expressed yet continuously dynamic and "alive" as well? Certainly my playing is still far from that ability and level of expression. But its a thought! Or is it just a disregard for effort and disipline! I tell myself surely no, but a little voice somewhere is screaming "you damn lazy denialist try to hide your lack of consistency in the guise of sound beyond mere music, but rather 'Art' as if poser!"

Oh man, tjats gotta be freaking awesome! Do you have the bongos? I got this set when my natural mother passed , once my youngest brother brought it down 7 years later(2022) it had the 28-30" bass drum, the 14 & 15" aireal toms on the bass drum(way to tall!) and the 18" floor tom. He sent me a snare later, but i had to get most of the hardware and all of the cymbals(which kills me, cuz im pretfy sure the guy that gave it to her would have had the old classic Zildjians going on) but then i added the two sets of roto toms, moved the 14&15" to a dual stand, and found first the 13" tom, and then the 12" and mounted those on the bass drum. And while ive been looking on reverb for at least a year, i have yet to find any of the smaller toms ...ive seen the 16" floor toms on Reverb, as well as a 20" floor, but the little toms and the blue bongo set ive only seen as parts of complete vistalite sets!

well i write left handed, but i play stringed instrument right handedly...of course, being a fella, when i hit puberty i became ambidexterous to a greater degree.... in terms of drumming ive had them set up both ways, and ive considered switching them back and forth to keep my brain paying attention, but ive found i like the hi hats on my right side and it seems my right foot works that pedal better than my left one does, so ive been going with that lately. why do you ask?

Back around the turn of the century, we used to use reverse delay as a sort of oracle, or perhaps some might say Ouija board. Setting the unit for infinite, or nearly so, repeats and the either speaking into a mic, or running a given instrument through the device, reversing the signal, and then repeating that bit until the signal begins to degrade and thereby shifting the phrase as data gradually drops out. Of course what one perceives being said might prove purely subjective, or perhaps most folks would hear the same phrase as it slowly transforms. My attempts o determine this aspect were generally thwarted, so no conclusive results were ever obtained. Its also of note to point out that various combinations of instrument tones will also produce speech like elements when reversed. Some might say that this is some form of audio pareidolia, where ones mind is simply seeking out recognizable or known sounds/words from the onslaught of unfamiliar tones and noises. Could be.... Either way, at times some pretty damn spooky phrases are generated or ones contextually appropriate for that day

Try playing a steady beat. Bass on one and three, snare on two and four. 1-2-3-4 Quarter notes 1&2&3&4& eighth notes Double that to get 16th notes same with 32th notes 1&a2&a3&a4&a triplets is the bases for blues

Keep it up man :) Love the setup. Just try and keep a steady 1-2-3-4 on the bass while doing all this, or a 22-22 What you're doing on the toms would be a triplet if an bass drum note was added . Keep counting, man and have fun.

Its funny because with all the other instruments I play in these videos, im using drum/backing tracks made with the dual arpeggiation engines on my old Korg Triton which in little time become a static feature that I often view as a timing anchor and with its absolute time it allows me to move around/away from the beat to a greater degree on the other instruments I'm actually playing. I mean, its always connected in some manner, just not always in ways a non-musician might hear it. So playing that static(or at least a lot closer to it) line , be it drums or something else is at this point still kinda alien to my minds sense of what should be...if that makes any sense! Lol But I hear what you're saying, and I appreciate your Input and suggestions for improvement! And thanks for listening and commenting!

No, I'm on the west coast. In high school I played in all the bands as I was the only bass player in the school, in college I played in the Jazz band, after that fours years in a reggae band in Washington state. After that it was mostly hit and miss rock/prog/improv stuff. Took up studio engineering and started doing all the parts(except drums) myself. And now have 900+ videos on youtube... "I made made it ma!" Lol

Lots of very interesting and unique idea you are exploring! Word of advice: don't stop!!! You have a very creative and unique voice. Continue to connect and listen to both the instrument and your inner music. The feel and the sound created will guide you, just trust yourself and trust the process. Happy music making!

I don't know if you ve listened to any of the bass tunes I have here, but the approach you describe is quite akin to how I go with bass. I've played bass for 46 years, been in a bunch of bands, but these days I pretty much play the moment as I feel it. Of course I'm a good deal more fluid on bass, but I figure with drums "from Chaos order will Arise!" Thanks for your input! And thanks for watching!
