Just came back from Xi'An. No doubt China has many ancient architects and history, but it is hard for me to reckon with the bustling fun-seeking crowds and over commercialised old town 😢and with so many people dressing up in traditional clothes to post for social media. I long for that quietness where I can sit down or stroll down quietly to soak in the sense of history. I can accept crowds of people who want to visit well known places to enjoy for what it is but couldn't accept that fun seeking noisy vibe, no offense❤ In the end I felt quite tired and find my hotel room a more welcoming solace 😊

Hello Nick, i happened upon your blog this morning immediately after i had seen my first video about this mosque. Compared to yours, that one was more detailed, taking the viewer inside the mosque itself and showing the various parts of the monument with its inscriptions and relics etc. The man who was acting guide in that video was a devout Muslim who seemed very well rehearsed in both Chinese and Arabic. What intrigued me was that he told his guest that the mosque was first built in 651 AD, following upon a missionary first contact by Islam's 3rd Caliph Osman, while you have described the mosque as having been built in 752 AD or thereabouts. I am not a devout Muslim, just interested in history. I am sure you have seen the video, if not please do watch it. It is a beautifully detailed presentation, albeit with the zeal of a devout believer. Barring all that, will you kindly double check on the dates of the establishment of the mosque and its subsequent additions and constructions. I have already subscribed to you and will watch more of your blogs. Many thanks.

Jeffrey Sachs Book Club spoke to author Jessica Rawson who wrote "Life and Afterlife in Ancient China." They discussed how geography shaped China's civilization. For example, there are few horses in central China because the land could not grow the kind of grass to feed horses. Horsemen culture is all concentrated in the northern and western regions. Successive dynasties somehow integrated the various tribes and ethnic groups into one big cultural melting pot. A fascinating country.

strained relationship is a diplomatic way to put it. the various nomadic groups in the steep had an economy that basically relied on plundering settled populations for what they themselves could not produce, hence the wall. Advancement in gunpowder technology basically blunted the tip of nomadic arrows and saw their scourge snuffed out, once and for all. hence why settled populations like Russia and China will never perceive Mongolia or Kazakhstan as threats ever again.

In 1293, he sent around 30.000 troops to invade Surabaya, East Java because the ruler of the Singhasari kingdom doesn't want to became tributary state of the Yuan dynasty.
