Breaking Through Creative Blocks Using New Mixed Media Materials + Tools
Art Bundles for Good: 100+ quality art classes for just $99 (YES, I’m being serious!) You only have through November 4th to purchase, so hurry and check out these classes and artists if you’re interested: www.art.bundlesforgood.com/?ap_id=marabethquinart
Hi Artist, let’s talk about creative blocks!
No matter the medium you work in, creative blocks are a normal part of the growth process, but they're never fun, are they?
I usually spend a decent amount of time avoiding the reality of them when they emerge, but eventually, avoiding becomes more uncomfortable and painful than just digging in and answering the call: Time to Grow!
One awesome thing about being a mixed media artist is that there are so many interesting tools and medium that can really help to distract from the fear or paralysis that can sometimes take over with a block. So here’s how I jump in head first, purposely using things that are somewhat unfamiliar to me so that the whole experience is about finding new things, new ways of moving, thinking, and approaching my work.
If you love this video, you’ll probably love my class The Intuitive Landscape marabethquinart.thinkific.com/courses/mixed-media-collage-and-the-intuitive-landscape
Here is the exercise that I use in the video:
Start with the sketchbook page, drawing 4 equal sized rectangles. Choose your tools (go for something unfamiliar!) and your medium (again, unfamiliar is great, and also try to use only 2-3 colors + some black and white).
Instead of overthinking, I create new goals for myself like:
* how fast can I move
* how sloppy can I be
* can I just make random marks instead of deciding what they are
* can I stay general until being specific happens naturally
* can I use broad strokes and big moves
* can I practice not knowing where it’s going but being ok with letting it emerge (instead of dictating)
Video Chapters:
0:00 Introduction to my exercise to break through a creative block
1:00 Why I like painting in multiples and having specific rules while using tools that aren’t as familiar to me
3:28 Tactics (like moving quickly and being messy) that help me remember how to paint fearlessly again
7:31 How I move from general to specific and evaluate what has emerged
9:11 How breaking your process in many categories which you can evaluate (instead of just judging by the finished product) helps you grow as an artist
*The following are affiliate links for which I receive a small commission at no additional cost to you
Supplies I’m using:
Daler Rowney Acrylic Ink Burnt Umber amzn.to/4hwscq6
Daler Rowney Acrylic Ink Flame Orange amzn.to/3NPhu0v

Adding New Mixed Media To Your Collage Work
Переглядів 4,1 тис.День тому
Do you feel stuck or does your work feel a little stale? I know that feeling. Mixed media art just suits my love for variety and interactions between materials, and the goal is to find combinations that 'work' and then refine it. But then when you least expect it, that creative cycle says "Time to change it up!" This is equally invigorating and scary for me. Full disclosure: I have been in a pe...

All artists have to figure out how to mix harmonious colors, and there are a number of tactics you can use to go about it, but this one is a great place to start! I just finished up my first round of my class, Colo...

Understanding Complementary Colors for Beginner Artists

Whether you are a beginner artist or a very experienced one, there's a chance that, like me, you've found color to be a bit difficult. Maybe you're passionate about color but struggle to make the concepts second nature...the truth is that anyone can learn the basics of color theory, but truly internalizing them is a different challenge. So I've recently taken myself on a quest to take color con...

Making a Mixed Media Collage Floral Painting
Переглядів 4,9 тис.3 місяці тому
Making a Mixed Media Collage Floral Sometimes paintings come together quickly, and sometimes, like this one, they can get started and then sit for a year before I feel the urge to finish it. I’ve learned to go by feel and not push it. I think one of the things I love about this painting is that the base layers were from a different time, and the finishing layers are more representational of whe...

Absolutely beautiful!!! All of them ❤ if you having a block produces those - can’t imagine what’s coming from you soon ❤❤❤
Hi Marabeth!! Fun to watch these beauties come along!! Love the results!! Makes me want to go back into my Intuitive Landscapes class with you again!! I had some surprisingly good turn outs that I would have never thought possible for me!! Big Hugs!! ~❤~ 😊
While watching the video there were a couple of times where I would have stopped. You kept going and ended up with so much more depth in the painting. I love your results. Thank you for sharing this. ❤
I’m so glad you were aware of that! There were several times that I also wanted to stop-I’ve realized that is a regular impulse, and I’ve also realized that rarely does that impulse come from a true knowing that the painting is complete. That urge is almost always about being uncomfortable pushing a little further.
I really like this tutorial… gives me some inspiration…. I am trying to leave representational art behind- try to find a new me! TY for your time and knowledge!
I’m so glad you found it helpful! it’s always equally exciting to find that new territory, and also a little scary so I’ve had to work on ways to calm myself down so I can discover new things-voila! A video! 🤗
Beautiful.
Thank you! And thanks for watching 😊
Love it!!!
Thank you!
So well said! 💖Your art is amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much 😀 I appreciate it!
Absolutely love it and love the new additions that you explored here with it❤❤❤ hope you keep showing us your process of continuing with these. Ty!!
That's the plan and absolutely more to come! Thanks for your kind words, Kelly!
Hi Mari Beth. First, love your channel. It has inspired and informed me so much. QQQ Do you see a difference in transparency of the unpainted area over a background between the Wet strength tissue and medical exam paper? Meaning which one is less likely to leave a halo? Busy season for me (work) but I will be taking you class. Also I LOVE your palette exercises. Thanks for sharing! Jan
Hi Jan! it will be great to have you in class 😊 I haven’t ever worked with the wet strength tissue, so I can’t speak to that, but if I’m comparing regular tissue to the med exam paper, I don’t see much difference there. I’m super happy with the medical exam paper and don’t even buy tissue anymore.
@ Thank you! Bought some and will test it. Appreciate all you share
Hi What colors do you use to get that dark blue ? thanks
I’m trying to remember, but my guess is a phthalo blue, some sort of dark green and some black mixed in.
What are you using to adhere papers to the substrate? Gloss media? Matt media? Or what? TY FOR THE TIME YOU TAKE TO share with us!
Golden Satin Glazing Liquid is my choice and I love it to also mix acrylic glazes.
And you’re welcome!! I love to do it.
LOVE LOVE LOVE THE LAYERS❤❤❤
I love layers too!
This is so beautiful. Thank you fir the video
My pleasure 😊
I LOVE this!!!!!
Thank you so much 😊
What is your glue/medium? Thank you! Love the color palette “map”
I use Golden Satin Glazing Liquid
@@marabethquinart that's so interesting! Not a glue at all!
I know-all of those acrylic mediums will adhere paper. I was so surprised at first!
Beautiful 😍
Thank you! 😊
It is gorgeous those soft colors❣️❣️
Thank you! I love soft colors and find it really hard to use them in my work, so that’s a compliment 😊
Thanks a bunch, Ms. Quin!
You are so welcome!
I love this and love your discussion of exploring new ideas and trusting the discomfort of change. Thank you!
I’m so glad it’s helpful because I know it can feel like you’re the only one going through it. 😆
I really enjoyed watching you create this piece and hearing your thought process! I think it came out lovely!! 🥰
Thank you so much! 😊
love hearing about your exploration of new processes!
Thanks Elizabeth! It always feels so awkward to go back into that stage…🤪
Lovely result Marabeth! Love the new ideas and I think you are on a wonderful path of discovery. I am slowly working my way through your collage course that I am taking and would recommend it to anyone interested in wanting to do this type of thing. Have a wonderful day! 😊
Thank you for the encouragement, Katarina! And I’m so glad you’re enjoying the course xoxo
You just gave me a fabulous idea for my next experiment! Thank you❤
oh good! I love fabulous ideas when they come!
So lovely.
Thanks so much 😊
Thank you Marybeth. You have just nudged me out of a creative slump.
That is wonderful to hear! 🤗
Love this direction! ❤
Thank you Lisa! Xoxo
Yes, lovely!
Thank you so much 🥰
It's lovely. Do more please.
Thank Maxine! 😊
Hi Marabeth, this is a great video (as all of yours are). Question: what kind of tissue? Regular wrapping type or a bit heavier artist tissue?
I used the regular wrapping type (white, not color) for this comparison
❤ Beautiful work, I wish to do this course .🙏❤️
I hope you do join us, Elizabeth! Here’s the info if you need it: marabethquinart.thinkific.com/courses/hand-stitched
Marybeth, I’m new to painting (zero art experience) and new to your videos, but they are some of my favorites. Your video about the messy creative process brings a lot of understanding and compassion -- plus more insight into your process and lovely pieces. Thank you!
I’m so happy you’re here! I have been painting a long time, but for most of it, understanding and compassion were not supporting me. When I changed that part, I really noticed that I enjoyed it so much more and was able to really develop as an artist. Best of luck to you!
I would like to join the waiting list for your color class. I'm getting so much out of your methods!
Glad you reached out to me on IG-I’m slow answering these!
Excellent content
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching 😊
Beautiful
Thank you 😊
Love it! And the clothes drying rack ahhh so clever! I was thinking about running a line inside and using clips but this looks way less messy 👏
yes, one of the students in my collage class turned me on to that rack and it has changed my life! It also collapses and can be put away-it’s fabulous.
I LOVE making little books like this because I can use whatever paper inside (I’m a big hot-pressed paper fan and it’s difficult to find, since I’m sure you know, they’re mainly cold). And the mixing of papers as you mentioned! I’ve been really into collage art lately, and you’ve been a HUGE inspiration! You’re so generous with techniques, tips, general info, etc. adore your style it’s so beautifully executed and ethereal. Seeing your work simply makes me smile! Back to these fabulous books-you should absolutely sell them or just sell one to me 🤫 that last one, truly needs me 😂 I never thought to give these as gifts! Brilliant, as always, thank you! PS totally not joking about selling me one 😈❤
Oh thank you for all the kind words, Sharon! I’m so so happy my channel has been inspiring for your collage work. And I would sell the books, but between the original art on the covers and the time it takes to make them, I can’t figure out how to make them affordable. Maybe as I get faster binding them it can make more sense…
Excellent content
Glad you enjoyed it!
Marabeth, here in Brazil, we don't work with books as other countries have as a cultural habit. That's why I ask: How can I use the work you develop?
Could you make your own artist journal or sketchbook? I use mine to do sketches and experimental paintings and also take notes on what I like about them, what I learned, how I want to take it forward, etc.
I took your Beginning Collage Class. Love it! Can you provide a video about making watercolor and gouche flowers on collage paper. I saw a snippet but would love to see more so I can re-watch over and over. I have so many mixed media supplies and would love to make unique collage papers. Thanks for all of your videos! Hope you will write a book one day. ~Terri 😊 Alabama
I’ll keep that video idea in mind, thanks! I tend to make videos about whatever I’m working on at the time. You might really enjoy my Layered Botanical class-it is ALL about making watercolor, acrylic botanicals on different kinds of collage paper and then layering them. I don’t use gouache however, but I’m sure you could! If you’re interested in checking it out, here’s the link for info: marabethquinart.thinkific.com/courses/mixed-media-collage-and-the-layered-botanical
@@marabethquinart I just completed it, ordered my supplies, and am ready to get started. Great class!!!
Of course you did-I am looking right at your name! Sorry about that-silly me! I’m so glad you’re getting going and let me know if I can help with anything :)
I want to play around with tissue again. I have a friend who creates stunning abstracts using only tissue and she sells her paintings. Unfortunately, she has had trouble with the tissue fading. Is there a fade proof tissue that you (or anybody) would recommend. I won’t be selling paintings myself, but if I gift one I don’t want it to fade.
I have only been doing it for a few years, so I haven’t personally experienced that, but I’m sure they do fade some. I do my best to use ample medium over them, and then at the end several thin layers of acrylic varnish to protect them. When they sell, I advise the buyer to keep them out of direct sunlight, but beyond that, I describe them as ‘living artworks’ simply because they are made with materials that will change over time-it’s part of the attraction to me that they are fragile and organic fibers. I think it’s a good thing to know and expect going into this particular medium.
I’m so impressed by your humility in allowing clients to determine what does or doesn’t happen in an art piece. Commissions are tough - and I admire your attitude. How did you come to the place where you were this open to a (non)artist having input into your work?
I think it’s just my personality-I also understand artists who say, “I make what I make” because that makes sense too. When I do a commission, I really vet the client to make sure they know my work/style and have them pick out a number of pieces of mine that are their favorite. If they can do that, then I know I can create something that feels natural to me, and when they want minor changes, I’m fine with that. I’d rather they really love it than feel they have to take it…I’ve never had this process not work, to my knowledge.
This is really beautiful and your process is amazing
Thank you so much! 😊
This is such a heartwarming and cinematic video, Kylie. Thank you. ~Terri 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Wow, it’s just so beautiful!
Thank you so much 😊
Love your work! ~Terri from Athens, Alabama 😊
