Banish Misfortune/Tatter Jack Walsh set
The setting for these tunes has the cherry trees in our backyard which are scheduled for removal soon. Sadly, they have grown quite large and have become a very potent threat to fall on our neighbor's home if they were to go down in a storm. So, we figured we would have they removed safely before any "misfortune" were to come from them. So, I decided to use them as a background for this end of summer set of "Banish Misfortune" and "Tatter Jack Walsh", and allow this video to remind us of the joy they have brought us for the past several years.

Joe Cooley's Reel and The Wise Maid

Here are a couple of reels, recorded on the deck behind the house with the birds happily flying around, (hopefully) enjoying the music while they get a bite to eat.
The Lark in the Morning Set
Переглядів 642 місяці тому
Here is a pair of very lively jigs. The first one, "Morrison's Jig," is in minor, while the second, "Lark in the Morning," is in major. A big thanks to the Online Academy of Irish Music for providing the piano backing accompaniment.
Toss the Feathers Set

Here are a set of Irish reels, the first two in minor, and then a switch to major with the third. The tunes are Toss the Feathers, The Merry Nicht Under the Tummel Brig and St. Anne's Reel. The middle tune is one that is featured on the great Irish flutist's, Kirsten Allstaff's, album of Irish flute recordings, called "Four/4." As always, I appreciate the backing tracks found in the Online Acad...
Two Hornpipes - Cronin's and The Plains of Boyle
Переглядів 1693 місяці тому
Here are two Irish tunes in the hornpipe style, which is characterized by the bouncy dotted eighth/sixteenth note rhythm. This is my first Irish flute video recording since recently joining a couple of our local concert bands, the Grand Rapids Symphonic Band and the Rockford Community Band. It has really been a lot of fun playing the concert flute again lately too, and I whole-heartedly thank e...
Dusty Windowsills/Humours of Ennistymon
Переглядів 525 місяців тому
This is a scene at the beautiful Falls Hotel in Ennistymon, Ireland. I found an overlay of someone cleaning a dusty windowsill, so I figured I would add that to the first tune. You can see the beautiful town of Ennistymon in the background. I really love this place, and it is where the Online Academy of Irish Music held their meetup for their students, who came from many parts of the world, to ...
Irish Flute at El Puente Elementary School in Jenison, Michigan
Переглядів 945 місяців тому
On March 25 and 26, I had the opportunity to present guest lessons about Irish flute and whistle music at El Puente Elementary School, in Jenison, Michigan. Ms. Amy DeBoer, their wonderful music teacher, invited me to come work with their sixth-grade music classes as part of a large unit on Irish music that she was doing, conveniently timed around St. Patrick's Day. Here is a video they made wi...
The Blarney Pilgrim
Переглядів 646 місяців тому
Many of us remember during an early scene in the Titanic movie when there was a spirited set of Irish dances happening down in the lower deck. One of those tunes was "The Blarney Pilgrim" which I pay tribute to here with this rendition on the Irish flute.
The London Lasses set
Переглядів 987 місяців тому
Here is something a bit different. The two tunes are The London Lasses and the Maids of Mount Cisco. But I decided to record them in the kitchen that is getting remodeled. Here is how it looks with the cabinets and appliances removed, and the floor stripped out as well. It actually created a nice, ambient tone, so I thought it would be fun to use a setting that would only look this way for a da...
The Humours of Ballymanus & Paddy Huddie's Slip Jig Set
Переглядів 1028 місяців тому
Here is a set where I added an Irish harp part via the keyboard. Playing these tunes on keyboard certainly adds a new level of challenge compared to playing them on the flute for me. I do bring the flute back though on the second time through the first tune. Slip jigs are in 9/8 time, which gives a feeling of three main beats throughout instead of the usual two.
Christmas Flute Quartet
Переглядів 1559 місяців тому
Here is my second Christmas video for this year. This time, I am playing a flute quartet, recording each part one at a time, until all four were together. The scenes in the first and third songs were from my home and the street where I live, while the middle scenes for Silent Night were some pictures I recently took at my brother Jeff's, in Oak Park, Illinois. I got the flute quartet arrangemen...
Christmas Medley-2023

We just got the snow started here in Rockford, Michigan, and Meijer Gardens has their beautiful annual Christmas tree display up now. Of course, this is set by their Ireland tree, with the lovely piano background part provided courtesy of Online Academy of Irish Music. I used the concert flute this time, and actually played three of them. It gave me the chance to even write the harmonies that I...
The Drunraney Lass Halloween Set

It's October (2023), which means it's time to be thinking about Halloween. The Online Academy of Irish Music designated this set of two beautiful jigs for its Halloween feature this year. So I decided to give this video a real Halloween ambience. Carolyn pitched in, and even got my hair fixed for the occasion. Be sure to check out the ending!
Murphy's Hornpipe & Higgin's Hornpipe
Переглядів 170Рік тому
A hornpipe is a dance type in Irish music, and similar to, but not the same as a reel. To me, it seems that hornpipes have an easy going, relaxed feeling, and there is no hurry at all as the melody wanders around in 4/4 time. I also noticed the dotted eighth/sixteenth note usage is prominent in hornpipes. I decided to take on the challenge of playing these two tunes on a larger low D whistle, w...
The Pretty Maid Set
Переглядів 73Рік тому
Here is a pair of tunes, one slow and lyrical, and the other very upbeat and lively. The first is called "The Pretty Maid Milking Her Cow" and the second is called "Dinky's." As always, a big thanks to the Online Academy of Irish Music for their great accompaniments and providing this material.
You did it beautifully again, my darling!
Thank you very much, Sweetheart! I am glad for all of the joy we have had from these lovely trees. I am sure we can plant something new in their place.
Excellent playing! 👏 Sorry for the trees! 😢
Thanks! Yes, I wanted to have them join me for this performance so that I would have something to remember them by. I plan to plant something there, like a couple pine trees perhaps.
Beautiful, Paul! And the birds were clearly enjoying your playing.
Thank you! Yes, it's nice to be able to play this wonderful Irish music outside, when the weather allows it!

Wonderful, Paul, but I didn‘t know, that these are some kitchen-hornpipes. I really like it! 😎
That's true. I had not researched if these were designated as kitchen pieces. But I'm glad you like them anyway! Thanks!!
Sounds great Paul. We listened to it in class today.

It’s so amazing, Paul. The children like this Irish kind of music, you can see it! ☘️🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪
Yes, we went for close to an hour, and they remained attentive throughout. It was wonderful to be able to get back into teaching this way.
Once a teacher, always a teacher, that must have been a lot of fun for you! I'm also considering whether I should start another whistleblowing group in our parish after corona!
@@klausroginger6470 That sounds good. I bet the people are ready for something like this to return again.
Beautiful!!
Thank you very much, Alayne!
Hey Paul sounds great. Love the backgrounds. It looks like you're on the ship :)
Thanks, but it was lonely being the only one there.
Another brilliant creation, Paul! 👏👏👏 I'm sure those dancers would have loved your rendition!
Thanks, Wendy. One can only imagine what it would have been like...
Awesome!❤❤
Thanks!!
I went to elementary school in Ohio 40 years ago, and this song has lived in my head since then. Thank you from the very bottom of my heart. ❤
How kind of you to post your comment. It is wonderful to realize how songs like Orion were sung throughout the country, and really enjoyed by so many students, because they were included in the music books that were common at the time. And it is more wonderful to know that through people like you, they live on as precious memories of those good times back then. Thank you so much for sharing this and adding to the fond memories of the simple, good things we had. It is a privilege to meet you here, and I am glad you introduced yourself.
Great job Paul! You rocked it at full speed! Looks like you've got a bit of a construction project underway... New music studio? 😁
Good catch! Actually, it's the kitchen restore/remodel project. I figured this would be a rare moment, so why not use it to record our video!
I love love this song. I will have my friend sing this on our 10 anniversary on October 2024. Virginia M from Texas.
Thank you, Virginia, and what a wonderful connection you have with this song. I love hearing that!
What a lovely interpretation. Big like.
Thank you very much, Jim! I appreciate it.
Sounded great Paul. We listened to this in my band class at GR Montessori today.
