    I have been using a Natures Head compost toilet for 12 months and have had no issues whatsoever with smell. Urine is captured in a separate container which can be emptied as required. The solid waste container is half filled with rehydrated coir peat or similar and can be emptied into a compost bin and left to decompose and used for fertiliser on non edible planting. As a single user I only have to empty the solids once a month. I capture my grey water in a tank and is pumped onto trees well away from my bore. My setup cost me less than $1500 and works perfectly. It was developed for yachts and is very simple and robust.

    Did you look at an incinerator toilet and then a grey water system? System one looks the go. Plant some salt tolerant plants that will help pull salt from your ground.

    If you have access to town water. I would definitely use that as this small block will definitely be just a learning tool for you. Learn how to garden and manage small livestock. Then you can use every inch of your land to become as self sufficient in food for the next few years as $20k will pay your water and sewage bills for quite a while. By then your UA-cam will be established and buy a bigger block of 2-100 acres and be totally self sufficient and completely off grid. Ps look up food cube. The initial cost is high but they can be moved if you move and the water savings are amazing.

    I would think compost system would take a lot more work than a septic system and in the long run it would be easier for you even though you are young and able to deal with matters much easier than older folks. But you'll be able to do bigger and better things in your homestead if you go with the septic. What do I know? You do what's best for you.

    Go for an aerobic septic system. The output is much cleaner.

    if you have some sort of electricity use a n incinerating toilet. It is the most sanitary. Or have a burn barrel and burn #2. for grey water there are many options.

      As far as I know grey water has to be subsurface within 24 hours. It can only be stored if it’s treated and has a permit. That’s what I’ve been told for Victoria anyway 🤔

    I had a composting toilet that just used saw dust, worms and maybe some gypsum. No grey water at all and was partially emptied every couple of months via an access panel at the bottom. The 1000 litre IBC one we set up at a mates in the goldfields cost $150 to set up.

    I thought septic tanks get pumped out by a tanker periodically. Compost sounds great. I feed the bugs in the grey water system yoghurt and sugar occasionally, council requires quarterly testing $80/month (Qld).

  • @nunyabusiness7001
    @nunyabusiness7001 2 дні тому

    Drop 3 IBCs into the ground and connect them up and have the last IBC flows out into a liner filled with gravel along the bottom and dirt on top and grow lots of flowers and reeds/water cleaning plants in it and let then overflow onto the grass if at all necessary... isnt for my never fills up. And then just dont tell the council cos who gives a sh, it If you want to get extra specky always have the kitchen drain directly into the septic but the laundry, shower, bathroom sinks drain into a 200L barrel dug into the ground next to the IBCs (with an overflow at the top that flows into the septic and put a submersible pump into it on a pressure gauge so when you flush your toilet it refills the back of the toilet with grey water... you can get more involved if you have a look into grey water systems with ponds and all sorts

    Hey Thanks for the info. Currently working through the same issues myself. There are septics that have a much smaller leach field. They basically have a secondary phosphorous filter. My leach field for 3 bed house is only 25 square metres. Certainly worth considering. Whilst compost sounds eco, They are much more messy for a permanent setup. You also have kids to consider. Also who is going to clean the chute?

    I can see you are trying to look at all options. We have a biocycle up here in Qld where we have purple hoses we can move around to water what we want. I believe the water is safe for food plants but prefer only to use on fruit trees. However we can move the hoses to irrigate gardens going down each side fence, yes our water would need to stay in our land but quite achievable. The other note I feel you both need to take on board is from what I see I think this may only be a stepping stone to a bigger block. So ask yourself what would make your property sell easy, not a lot of people would op for a compost toilet only on a 1/4 acre. Yes some may but you are limiting the buyers market. Just a thought.

    I'm in wheatbelt WA, old house no plumbing, septics, water, rubbish, post, reception, etc etc, i got power though 😂 I'm the target market for the off grid loo/water system. Im looking at compost loo from ecolet(incerating toilets can't be run during fire bans here), a greywater system from ecolet too but underground diffusion as any surface grey water is not allowed unless a human is doing it aka buckets (wildlife drinking grey water is a no no), but I will still need a black water system irregardless. Unfortunatly kitchen water(any oilly water) is considered black water. Either go the septic route and build a 240m2 greenhouse/shadehouse for container/hydroponic gardening and use the other space for the fruit trees or go the hippy route and compost loo + 80m2 area + storage for 2years of waste at xy% humidity and xy temperature, it isn't just dig a hole and dump under a tree. You do need storage or a 10-15k (purchase price not instal) compost loo My plumber would install a septic without council approval(jokes i swear), so him certifying an off grid system is no problem 😅 If i was you, I'd go septic

    • @Homestead_OnTheRock_
      @Homestead_OnTheRock_ 2 дні тому

      Agree with the above comment. You could get away with some small beds perhaps and some flowers/trees….however The septic irrigation is meant to leach into the ground, then the grass roots absorb the water and the grass grows and water evaporates from the plants. This helps absorb and manage the water. If you cover the field with something you’re removing the ability for plants to absorb/reduce the water. So putting a garden bed on top of the irrigation would remove the absorption benefits and if you had to water to that garden bed you would be adding more water to an already problematic area. Every situation is different but generally speaking I would say no you can not plant or do anything above the septic leach drains or irrigation.

    Although the compost toilet is a bit cheaper you have to think about how much you value your time dealing with them, potential cleaning and smells in your bathrooms. I say go for the septic tank and use the leach field as a pollinator garden with flowers. I'm guessing an aerobic septic system isn't the best since it requires power, but it can reduce the size of the leach field, could use solar. You don't want to be messing with poop, get the tried and true septic

  • @Woodythewonderdog

    We’ve basically travelled the exact same path…. My property didn’t end up going ahead but where i landed was compost toilet plus grey water filtration. The trick is to get the LCA consultant on the same page with they grey water system you want to use, have them design to that spec, then approach the waste water environment person at council and discuss your plans with them before seeking formal approval. If you’ve got an AS standard system design and an LCA to match them you’ll get it through…. Unless that council person is in the dark ages, and many of them are unfortunately.

    • @Homestead_OnTheRock_
      @Homestead_OnTheRock_ 2 дні тому

      Yep well said and I agree with this advice! Unfortunately when I got the LCA drawn up I was convinced of getting a septic, I could possibly get them to redraw it at a smaller fee but they haven't been easy to work with. I think I will still be able to get it through without my LCA recommending it only due to my council so far being really great ......time will tell though haha! Appreciate this and definitely hit the nail on the head! This is the method to follow

    • @Maddi-d8f
      @Maddi-d8f 2 дні тому

      Just because they have access to town water doesn't mean they are connecting to it. You'd need a very good system to filter everything, definitely don't want to be drinking, showing or watering your veg garden with town water. Tank water does run out quickly especially when it doesn't rain so if long term goal is to be self sufficient with tanks and not connected to town water compost toilet is the way to go even if it comes to the same price as the septic. We are forever paying to fill our tanks when it doesn't rain. Animals, veg garden and orchard require a lot of water in Summer so the more rain water you can save by not flushing down the toilet the better. We have septic, we purchased an existing home but have the land space to not worry about not building or growing on top of the area. We'll be setting up grey water soon to reuse as much water as possible :)

    If you go with a septic system you could plan some of your gardens in wicking beds so they can be positioned on top of the septic field and not completely waste this space. We are planning to use these to improve our water efficiency (we are on tank water) and there are lots of great designs using old IBC containers. You could also consider a septic system with a filter added to the field to improve the quality for use with fruit trees especially if it’s a UV or worm farm system.

    It’s looking great. I love the trial and error of gardening. You’re doing a fantastic job with your container garden. Container gardening is hard work. You generally have to water more because they dry out quicker, and the black plastic pots can get hotter and cook the roots sometimes. Usually if something goes to bolt, generally they taste bitter or different like lettuces etc. I find lettuce bolts really quickly if the conditions aren’t ideal I.e too hot, underwatered etc. I’m no expert but I feel maybe you over planted your beets? But you can still harvest there stalks, I treat it like celery with my cooking and salads. Definitely need to take the lateral elbows/suckers of your toms, helps keep the plants focus on producing fruit rather then keep expanding, also helps with airflow and reducing susceptibility to issues. Oh and with cucumbers and zucchini for example, the bigger they are, the harder the seeds get and becomes inedible (becomes chicken food instead). Highly recommend setting up an irrigation system, to help with even and automatic watering. But might not be worth the outlay given that you will eventually move to your property. Oh and next time, check the ‘bargain bin’ section for plants that need TLC, I’ve managed to nurse quite a few back to good health, at a fraction of their originally cost. Highly recommend looking into companion planting.
