- In this video i show you 10 things i'm doing to prepare my family for Homesteading even though we haven't got much land or money! I want to give practical advice and tips to other people who are chasing the same dream as me! I Hope this video motivates you to START HOMESTEADING NOW!
bake your egg shells & then crush lightly & feed back to your chickens for calcium; I cook my shells in a fire pit & take the ashes down to the chook run, they scratch through it getting minerals from the ash & coal as well
also chickens will appreciate a bigger area to forage (eventually, you can make a larger run on your property)
you are doing well so far, I've had chooks for nearly 30yrs, wouldn't be without them, they have the best eggs
thanx for sharing your journey
Hey guys, love the channel.
It is so refreshing to see people building and working towards their dreams not just posting the perfect "after" shots.
Love that you guys are real and using those free/cheap resources - who cares if they are not "perfect" or "pretty". My family is also in the process of building our homestead, we are in a granny flat with our baby until we build and sometimes all our budget allows is free resources and they may be ugly, but if they work we are happy.
Hey hey, Thanks for this comment!
Yea we were not sure how people would respond to us being a homesteading channel but not really on a "Homestead" yet. But we are super happy with the feedback and support we have gotten, so thank you!
Yea reality is most garden beds and set ups cost a weeks wage and i (most people) simply cant afford it right now! gotta make do with what we can!
Good on ya guys and keep up the good work!
With the eggs when you have a lot you can freeze them for cooking and scrambled eggs. The hens often have a rest from laying during the winter. You can also give them oats to eat which is economical. The other option is to sell the eggs😊 and the money used for the food you buy in for them.
My best veg to grow is silver beet and chard.Chop an onion and cook them put them in anything cut fine, soups patties spaghetti sauce, when nothing else growing that will.
Apologies for not making the Premiere and live chat guys! If you had any comments or questions, type them below and ill get to them. cheers!
Check out Jess at Roots and refuge she talks about using your waiting room as a classroom. Hollar homestead he puts the compost pile in the chicken coop they spedd up the compist making both Christian families worth a look. Great first get started tips, START where you are, use what you have!
That is such an awesome channel !
Look into bee keeping as well! We are in Melbourne also, on a normal
Suburban block and we have two hives. A local bee group will hook you up for cheap as well!
This sounds awesome we will get into that soon I reckon! Thanks for the comment
Big fan of #10.... "Rubbish... rubbish... rubbish..." 😂 That's about what I'm saying in my head when I pass those isles.
#10 is good advice no matter who you are!
That bread looks delish. 😋
I get Kialla Pure Foods for my bulk pantry items. All Aussie, organic, chemical free and all that, but it also comes in cotton sacks which I love to use and repurpose. Just a way to skip the plastic packaging and gain a free usable material 😁 Thank you for reminding me of Honest to Goodness, it’s good to have a backup supplier that also ticks all the boxes.
to help your meat last even longer in the freezer i recommend getting a vac sealer. you can generally get them pretty cheap
Easiest ways to preserve food:
freeze drying & Dehydration. Each a different machine, Mrs Cog Hill Farm does both and makes the best snacks that are healthy for the whole family.
Love your channel, keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing!❤
Tom don’t forget to use the egg shell s grind them fine good for garden(calcium) or feed them back to chooks.
Loved this video, had some funny moments 😂. It’s scary how the local supermarket is filled with rubbish and marketed as healthy. I loved the message that you should start somewhere even if it’s small, so I’m off now to try and convince my hubby we need chickens.
Great message guys. Fantastic progress & footage with good ol' Aussie humour
Which Podcasts inspire/educate you, recipes to use instead of junk buying - Dad & son cooking sessions please😜👏
Thanks mate! glad you enjoyed it haha
Honestly most of my podcast/listening is about the bible and history haha! But i do spend a lot of time also watching a lot of videos in regards to homesteading and health, just nobody in particular thats all!
Sorry thats not a great answer but samantha does most of the cooking so ill get her to answer in regards to health/ cooking Info!!!
HAHA dad and son are very blessed and we are generally only responsible for eggs in the morning, Sam does all the cooking!
We are going to film a family day in the kitchen soon though doing some sauerkraut! Hopefully you enjoy that! Dad and koah will be in the kitchen but mums in charge haha
My goal for this week month is going back to making our own pasta from scratch. We were doing it, but stopped when our pasta machine broke. Took us a while to get another. We already make our own bread.
Our sourdough starter died, so planning on getting another.
I’m currently on a detoxification trying to repair my gut health. So on day 2 of just drinking bone broth which I made myself. One more day then it’s adding soup.
Tomorrow I’m making another 2 batches of kraut, I’m quite frustrated my last batch went bad. But I’m trying really hard to slowly make everything from scratch, and I’ll be going paleo for my own health. If that makes sense.
You can plant the wheat berries as well to grow your own wheat. Very easy starter crop like easier than corn. Oats can also be planted for the oat grass and seeds. Oat grass is amazing herbal medicine eaten fresh. Super great winter crop to grow and the grass is great as a winter green. Growing grains is so easy and productive. Scares people for some reason but it’s easy in a raised bed or in the ground or in a bucket.
Been growing and producing our own food for over 10 years now. Love it. I planted things we didn’t eat like meddlers and chaste tree berry, and quince. We love them all now. Chaste berry is like pepper but with a hormone balancing effect and is medicine for the pituitary gland. Comfrey is also a fantastic herb that’s hard to buy. Can be turned into compost quickly and is packed with minerals, use it externally for non open wound healing or do research on internal use as it’s illegal here in Australia, but I still use it when needed. Southernwood is another herb to consider. It’s been banned now but was a cure for extreme viral infections and Ross river fever. It will grow happily in a pot as will comfrey. So many good herbs and foods out there to grow. Millet is another grain that can be boiled up and made into porridge or used like rice. God bless you both for doing this and going back to the natural way we were created to live. You’ll never stop learning. 😊
loving the vids ! 😄 here's a little tip for feeding the chooks on the cheap. Put your veggie scraps , potato , carrot , cauliflower etc into a pot and boil it for a couple of minutes then stir in a handful of wheat pollard (or rolled oats ). Once cooled feed that veggie porridge to the ladies. Its cheap and wholesome. They also thrive on meat scraps. If you want to get fancy you can sprout wheat for them too. In winter you can set a light on a timer to come on in the morning. This tricks then into thinking the days are longer and they will lay better through the winter.
oh and if you're not already doing this, save your egg shells , crush them up and give them back to the hens so they get plenty of calcium to put into new eggs 😊
You right on. Plus talk to older people and see how we do it you just may learn things to save your life.
Well said! Passing on knowledge is so important and can save the younger generation a lot of trouble!
Great tips
Love your enthusiasm
You can also first put all your veggie scraps and peels etc in a bag in the freezer. Then you can cook them up in water strain and then you have veggie stock for your soups. Then you put the scraps finally into your compost 😊
Love your enthusiasm....this our plan too! Bought 2.5 acres In Tasmania and will be living out of our caravan before house is built and start homesteading straight away and build up our offgrid living
This sounds so good! Good on ya for just diving in and getting in done!
Great video guys. My husband and I live in Adelaide, pretty close to the airport with our two small children (1 & 2 years old).
We are renting, but one day we would like to live in our own place and homestead and live off grid/independently as much as possible.
So far we have done the following;
- make 90% of our food from scratch (nothing from packets, other than diced tomatoes and pasata sauce) this means that I had to learn a whole lot of kitchen skills in order to be able to do it myself. I buy a few sauces here and there, but that’s really it.
- Sourdough bread (I now sell my starter to others on marketplace)
- Make our own cleaning spray from citrus peels we use
- Make our own vinegar (learning/implementing this one right now)
- Bought half a cow from a farmer we met on Facebook
- Been dabbling in growing our own food, in raised garden beds and pots.
- Fermenting kefir (super easy just buy the grains on marketplace)
Things I’m in the process of learning;
- making our own bone broth
- making yoghurt from scratch
- pickling
- fermenting vegetables
- make our own body care products
- make our own laundry detergent
We would love to get chickens, but we can’t do that in our property. But we buy all our eggs direct from a farm every 5 weeks.
This is a perfect example of what we all need to do!
Well done, im sure it has taken a lot of time to learn all the new skills but im certain you dont regret anything you have done!
Ultimately there is no finish line to homesteading.....we just have to keep trying to live better/healthier lives every day, and it sounds like you're doing that!
Keep it up and thanks for the comment, we love hearing from people on the same journey
This is really cool finding other South Aussie suburban homesteaders! I’m in Gawler and doing some of the things on your list. Would love to learn more about pickling and long term storage of food
Remember : You can't wait in until life isn't hard anymore before you decide to be happy 😊 ☀️🐝🌻🍋🥚🥗
I can’t have chickens where we are renting but would love to have them. I’ve joined a fb Melb backyard chicken group to learn from. BIGGEST resounding lesson to learn is fox proof your henhouse/enclosure.
Please do this Tom they are very cunning and they are everywhere.
Things I’ve started though: compost, worm farm, vege garden, making kombucha and milk kefir.
All in infancy stage but like you said, I’ve started.
Thanks for this video it’s inspiring to get started too.
Loving the content! Always nice to see people start their journey to being more self sufficient! You dont need a lot of space! Definitely look into no dig gardening and grow what you like to eat :)
Will do and thank you ❤❤
I make bread using honest to goodness grain too, make broth and freeze do been learning. Next to get a worm farm
Good Stuff Jane! Sounds like you have been busy!! once you start worms are fun and super easy to maintain as well!
Loved your Aussie humour at the beginning. 😂
I really admire your commitment to whole foods as such a young family.
I agree with all of your ideas. I would also add getting solar power if possible. We also had a slow combustion stove that we used in the winter because it heated the house and cooked beautiful food. We were completely off grid so we had to install a septic system that watered the paddocks with recycled water. Just take things one step at a time and you won’t be overwhelmed. 😊😊
We would love to go full solar/ Off grid but that will be in the future! I might set up a little battery/solar system though just for fridges and freezers !
We cant wait to get a fireplace for heat and cooking!
That sounds great! Im deciding between a worm septic or a compost system / grey water irrigation system!
Thanks for the comment and support!
This is fantastic! 😂 And so so useful. Thanks legends
Baby steps!! You are all doing great btw. I had to search your youtube to watch the latest video lol. Definitely enjoyable and encouraging. Also fun tip, you can buy large spring onion bunches from markets than eat the tops and pu5 the bottoms with the roots into a couple of cm of water. Top it up regularly and than plant them! I have them coming ou5 of my ears now 😂 the more you pick herbs after theyre a little established the mor3 they'll grow!!
Great video really enjoying your content another Chanel I have found very helpful is homesteading down under he is located in Tasmania where I am but the weather is similar to where you are very much worth a look
Thanks for this! Yep we just subscribed to them, they are great !
Hahaha you are funny!! Love your attitude and drive!! I’m getting there with your list , I want chickens next!! 😊🌿
You guys are Very good UA-camrs. Very relatable. Very honest, Thumbs up
Very inspirational! I’ve been thinking about chickens for a while and I had no idea that you can feed them grass or scraps and the whole cycle
Element. I’ll be building my coop soon, after this video 🥰 I just bought a little cottage in country Victoria, was cheap and I’m also growing food and have no idea what I’m doing 😊
You are funny Tom, love the intro and it’s motivating to see someone living in suburbia start implementing key homesteading practices.
I’m feeling motivated to plant some seeds and start a compost bin. Who knows, chickens and a worm farm might follow.
Glad you enjoyed it brother! Haha love to hear that!
I'm going seed shopping soon ill buy you some!
Ruth will love the chickens!
Your rubbish walk in coles made me laugh 😂
I got a bit of a shock with your your first few minutes of the video! I'm going to start my compost heap this week!
I’d love to buy fresh raw milk ,but I thought it was illegal here, which I think sucks,we should be able to make our own choices.❤
@@gailmcdonald1946 it is illegal in Victoria. However just like a home made jam, relish, honey or many other products you might find at a markets, people still sell it illegally at their own risk. We don’t advise people to break the law, but we do always suggest finding the best and most nutritious food you can responsibly.
Put the leaves in the chook pen first so they have more to scratch around in . You are doing a great job. Keep going ! 🙏🦋
I love this way of posting! I get reminded that it’s up and can watch straight away!!
Awesome! We’re glad to hear you’re enjoying it! Appreciate the feedback!
Made me giggle with the last “rubbish”. Definitely going to be implementing some of these things. Thanks for the inspiration.
Great video, love your video style. 😊👩🏻🌾
@@gailmcdonald1946 as thank you! Appreciate the support ❤️
GOSH...I was like...How did I miss them building the log cabin ! 😅 Number 10...Stop buying rubish ! Noted !
HAHA yea not quite yet!!
We're all guilty of that one! Just start small and choose one piece of " rubbish" to delete from the grocery list haha!
appreciate the comment
😂 me too I thought dam they're quick !
Good advice
Keep up the good work, cant wait till you start your property. Also no offence but what is the story with the house your in? did the owners run out of money?
Love this channel 🥰 good work guys so excited to see your homestead grow
aw thank you xx
I have started a garden ( in buckets at our rental 😂) last week I bought 500 worms so the compost and the worm farm are going strong. And I might make bread this week .. if we don’t eat it I can feed it to the worms I guess
Well done! Im about to harvest my carrots in a bucket!!
YES somebody else doing worms haha!
took me about 2 months to feel like they were working properly, now after 3 months i'm confident the population has doubled!
Keep up the good work!
Cryovac machine will be your next best friend for all your freezer goods.
You guys are awesome. Love following you ❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much! appreciate the support you have been giving us x
Totally agree with you.
Great Job we are all constantly learning doesn’t matter where we are on the journey ❤ always look forward to watching to see what u have come up with 😍😂
Absolutely! There is always a "better" way to do things and more to learn, we just have to do our best with what we have and where we're at! Appreciate the support from you guys xx
@@Homestead_OnTheRock_love how I am challenged by what u say lol 😊with busy lives we sometimes get lost and lose focus on what’s important thanks for challenging me a good reminder to stop eating rubbish we have the tools we should use them more 😮😊❤

Heya Tom, have you got the mini hothouse tied down? Well worthwhile as they blow away very quickly in my experience.
Also highly recommend getting onto the low tech method for growing primary composting mushrooms.
“This is not a snack”… Exactly!!! American movies are the worst for this, they even call lollies and chips snacks! I have an awesome muesli bar recipe I’ve been making lately which is an awesome snack. Fruit and cut up veggies with a homemade dip are our favourite snacks. But we honestly don’t snack much at all. When you’re making eggs on sourdough toast for breakfast and making wholesome healthy meals for breakfast lunch and dinner, you tend to be fuller for longer carrying you to the next meal without needing a snack.
Theres also a process the mayans used to enrigh soil with burnt coal
Some great tips, thankyou
Looks great Tom and Sam. Well done. I really am intrigued with your worm farm, do you have a drain on it as it didn't appwar overly wet.
I hope you post this to the homesteadingvgroup as many ask the questions you are answering.
Looking forward to following your journey.
My tip: chest freezers are better than uprights, many more benefits 😉
Some solid advice! Thanks!
1,2,3 ,4 &8 done these for years, 5,6&7 when available/ able to do, 9 can always learn something new, 10……I still fail on this one sometimes.
Love this channel mate I’m doing doing something similar
Loving your channel guys, May I ask where did you buy this grinder from? Looking for something similar and how fine does it grind? It looks nice and compact.
We try and make our own food from scratch as much as possible. The most shocking thing I found in the supermarket after we had our little one was food marketed at kids. It usually has about 100 ingredients including canola oil and sugar! The only suitable yoghurt pouch we found in the supermarket is the tamar valley kids yoghurt, which we use when we are out and about. A particular bad case is those 'veggie puffs' which contain about 1% of whatever vegetables they claim the food to be - in powder form! Rubbish!
Nice
Thanks!
The intro 😂👏
How do you guys go about getting milk direct from the farmer? Is it raw milk? We know how to get half or a whole cow direct from the farmer but have had issues with milk.
"don't buy rubbish" me, having just bought my third bow 👀
Comment!!!
Hi again from SA,I don't mean to sound rude but why such long delays in posting vlogs?
G'day again xx
Once we have finished creating the video we like to schedule it so people know what is coming up in the future!
Creating videos takes a lot of time though so we can only do 1 a week for now xxx

If you comment or ask anything here ill see it and respond.
Sorry again mate but i appreciate the comment and feedback!
Though I watch Life uncontained (my favourite you tube channel). They NEVER interact, and they never give advice or preach. They just do them in a lovely light hearted way. Ove 1.5 million subscribers. PS, why do we as Australians use the term homesteading. I’d like a more Australian term. Just my feeling
@@Homestead_OnTheRock_ just a comment not a complaint
@@Satya2btrue using homesteading as a term is differentiate from the general term of farming which can lean more towards mono agriculture big Ag. Homesteading is more of a lifestyle where farming tends to be more of a buisness
Just be careful with roadside poop bags, it could contain herbicides.
Holy fuk that was funny 😹
Pro tip potato skin can kill a chicken
@@marianabear2037 oh wow! Thank you

Great vlog once again! Loved the introduction. 😊 Your tips are very appreciated. Some might find it overwhelming to pick a starting point, however, your vlog is a great way to show us that starting small will help you achieve the bigger picture eventually. 🥕🥬🍅 Thank you for sharing.❤
