Federal Signal STL-10, Alert -- Mundelein, IL
Last night, I was trying to figure out what siren to film this month. I randomly had the thought to try this STL-10 after hearing it in videos that a few other enthusiasts filmed in the area. So here is the story. We have known about this siren for a long long time and always thought it was inactive because the rest of Mundelein is covered by 12 Whelen 4004 sirens. However, in videos filmed in Mundelein and Vernon Hills, you can hear a familiar sound of a STL-10 winding up, and it had to be this one since it is the only one in the area. Last night, I message the fire department to see if it is active. I get a response back saying that he will check it out for me. Morning comes and no response. I decided to risk it and head out to record it. 10AM hits and this loud sucker winds up for three minutes of alert! The horns have custom inserts since this siren is on a hill, and they were attempting to project the sound downwards, which made it louder from my standpoint. After the test, I message the fire department saying that it worked loud and clear, and that is when I got a response. Turns out, this siren is not actively monitored by the village due to its age, and it isn't a priority. However, they thought power was cut years and years ago, but somehow it still ends up running, so they left it. What amazes me here is that the Whelen system has been up for about 20 years now, which means this siren hasn't seen maintenance for a LONG time, and it still sounds great! Filmed June 4, 2019 Here is what must be the slowest rotating T-128 on the planet. It literally rotates at less that 1/2 rpm! Filmed June 2018 After filming the P-50 in Bartlett, the group decided to go to Elgin since they test at 10:30. Well, we all got lost and ended up at different sirens, and I got there a little late to this one, but I quickly threw my camera on top of my Jeep and it turned out decent.

Filmed July 2017 So a couple of years ago, I decided to re-record the 1003 in Niles, and met up with Logan. Filmed June 2018 Back in June, I met up with a large group of enthusiasts with ALOT of cameras set up to record this 480V beast in Bartlett, IL. This one does 3 minutes of alert. At this test, I learned that it is a bad idea to run towards a P-50 as it is sounding, as the sound waves can actually make you nauseous!
