Skateboarding in Brazil - Part 1
I’ve been visiting Brazil for several years now and it has become My second home. The place i go to is a small island just off the east coast called Florionopolis which is home to some Pro Skaters most notably Pedro Barros.
If you look at some of the links below you can see some of My previous trips and some links to other things i reference in this video which is all about My most recent two visits in April 2024 and December 20204 - January 2025.
I hope you like it, Let me know what you think in the comments section below and even ask me and questions you may have.

Are you skating enough?

Pushing yourself to improve and do things outside of your comfort zone is a big part of skateboarding , I think the more comfortable you get with new things you have learned it's very easy to settle and not continue pushing forward, sometimes to the point where you forget what its like to be in unknown territory and when those situations arise you forget how to deal with them. @ 🤣 I’ve had the idea in my head for quite some time just hadn’t got around to doing it but yeah I was kinda surprised I’d not seen anyone do it before. Luckily there was an option for grey so I’ve just added it (along with all colour options for the standard hoodie) but in doing so I noticed I screwed up and had actually put a standard hoodie as the oversized one 😬 so I’m glad you questioned it. Unfortunately it means the actual oversized ones are a bit more expensive but they are more “plush”, the standard ones are regular Gildan screen print ones, still good but not so “special”.

    Thats interesting that you were wearing wrist guards when you suffered the break, out of interest which guards were you wearing when it happened? And have you had any more breaks since this was a long time ago? I just broke mine in 3 places skating 2 weeks ago, (also in my late 30's & first broken bone!) wasnt wearing any guards when it happened partly because i just couldn't find a pair of guards that i believed in. im currently looking at the demon flexmeter d30 now and wont skate again without guards. Ive always been unsure about wrist guards and wondered if it simply just causes a break further up🤔 thats why im now looking at wrist guards that are either developed or recommend by orthopedic surgeons If you've got any recommendations for me let me know! Ive already seen your wrist guard video which was helpful. Have you ever tried the wrist guards with the material in them that harden on impact? Which i think the flexmeter ones have if im not mistaken

    • @NeilHesterSkateboarding
      @NeilHesterSkateboarding 8 днів тому

      @@Feg1989 the ones I was actually wearing when I broke my wrist were just palm guards not full wrist guards. I now never skate without the Flexmeters and have never so much as strained my wrist while wearing them and I’ve had some pretty epic slams so I totally recommend them. I think I covered everything in my wrist guard video. The Flexmeters are fantastic just a little long and not all that hard wearing material but otherwise perfect. They apparently do have the D3O material in the palms but I’ve stopped a pair down when I refurbished them and it’s nearly nothing there but don’t let that put you off they are plenty padded and I never bruise my palms with them.

    i have two new sets of bearings AND wheels. The spacers are the correct size. The ONLY way I can get any of them to spin freely while the axle nut is tightened down all the way is if the bearing shields are removed and left off. Have you ever seen this before? Does that mean I just happen to have defective or warped shields?

    • @NeilHesterSkateboarding
      @NeilHesterSkateboarding 13 днів тому

      That is really odd, no I've never seen it but it suggest to Me that when they are in place the shields are coming in contact with the truck hanger on the inside and/or the axle nut on the outside which shouldn't happen but could be easily fixed by adding another (or enough) speed washers either side of the wheel to space the bearing away from these surfaces. Also make sure you are not cranking the nuts down so hard they are putting unnecessary lateral load on the bearing cores (your spacers may measure correctly but could be just a tiny bit too short) which could cause a warp. you only really need to tighten them down enough that the wheels/bearing don't rattle side to side and you can even back off the nut so there is the tiniest bit of movement there. My demonstration of cranking them down fully was mainly to illustrate that with the perfect setup its possible but we have to admit that not all wheel have perfectly formed bearing seats and urethane often warps slightly as it cures. I really need to make another video about these kind of variables too.

    • @CamSutton75
      @CamSutton75 18 днів тому

      @NeilHesterSkateboarding fair enough. I think I'm just amazed that such a hard wheel as an 84b is working for you. Hard to imagine it being grippy enough for us older gentlemen, especially on wooden ramps. But all the old Bones Brigade guys use them (except Lance) so it's obviously some kind of George Powell voodoo magic. Looking forward to the follow up video!

    • @NeilHesterSkateboarding
      @NeilHesterSkateboarding 17 днів тому

      @@CamSutton75 I'm finding they grip really well for most surfaces, I think 90% of grip problems are down to technique, I used to slip on some smooth wood ramps a few years ago when I was not quite so experienced as I am now. My local park has a "notoriously" slippery wooden bowl and I never slip there anymore even with the 84b's, I do skate it really fast and hard so I've just learned how to deal with it and overcome it. The bottom line is you can't treat a wood surface in the same way you do concrete you have to adjust yourself accordingly, don't dig into turns or pumps against the direction of travel and you need your weight distribution on the board right, the faster you go the lest risky it becomes too. In my experience slipping comes from trying to defy forces (gravity etc) when you dot have enough centrifugal force to hold you on the wall. Maybe some people may not feel like they have tuned into this to deal with it and so look at wheels to compensate which is fair enough but i wanted the fastest possible option and so far its working well for me. I'm not trying to say I'm a great skater but I understand and feel why they work well for the "Pro's".

    • @NeilHesterSkateboarding
      @NeilHesterSkateboarding 13 днів тому

      @@CamSutton75 I think the only other variable that is out of our control is dust, as i found when testing these X99’s, when dealing with harder wheels it almost doesn't matter what the durometer is if you are skating a dusty wooden park because the dust sticks to the wheels and then you are riding and slipping on a surface of dust instead of your wheels urethane. this can be worse with softer wheels because the dust can stuck to them more than harder wheels. so sometimes its just a crap shoot but learning to control hard wheels is definitely a good thing to have in your bag. it also somewhat amuses me that these X99’s and Powell Dragons etc are all marketed as wheels that slide when you want to, but i've not yet spoken to anyone using these wheels who wants to actually slide everyone who evangelises about them wants the maximum grip, At least they seem to serve that purpose to those who like them.

      @@CamSutton75I think I had about a week of tentative use on wood where I felt like they might be very slightly slippy but I’ve totally adjusted to them now and don’t slip at all. I’m totally sure it’s down to technique more than anything else so I believe you can get used to anything within reason if you can feel how to adjust accordingly. Skating is one of those things that I don't need a timer for. I honestly feel like I can condense half a week of progression into a session, sometimes. That being said, progression is relative. It changes from person to person. What I want out of my skating is a highly personalized thing. So it's possible that someone who skates more hours, does in fact progress more. But they also could be progressing less per hour, at a worse rate, or even not being as efficient as I might be. Because skating does feel taxing, especially on the plantar fascia for me. The muscles also need time to recover and put on mass, when you're jumping onto higher and higher stuff. Sometimes progression is just doing a trick over and over and trying different stupid stuff until you figure out what works, that's almost like a interrogation. Because if someone could just tell you what you're doing wrong, or if you could review the footage, it would make life much easier lol. I hate reviewing footage while I'm in the zone, and most times I refuse to do it, so there's the extra investment of time when you learn going by 'feeling the board under you'. Instead of using a third-person perspective tool. There's also instruction, if you don't know how to practice, then it's exponentially harder. Skaters actually do better with some light coaching, which cuts down on time needed for learning and recovering from injuries. I loved skating growing up, but I never had someone with more experience to coach me. The first time I found out a guy I grew up skating with was teaching kids, it was mind blowing. How come he never actually skated with us?! He was also at the park chasing the pros and getting better lol.

      Oh yeah its absolutely an individual thing and everyone is different and I didnt mean My comments to be based on comparing yourself to anyone else after all (and quite selfishly my channel is all about Me 😂 ) But I do draw on some observations of some people who get down on themselves about not progressing while at the same time don't put the work in or others who assume that My progress albeit slow has somehow come to me easy. Age and agility also has a huge impact on the speed we can learn and or retain stuff which is what i was touching on in the video. Reviewing footage is one thing but actually making your body do what you want it to even when you know very well what you are doing wrong and what you should be doing, this is where even coaching cant always help. So yeah as with everything there are many many facets to consider and we can only pull from our own experiences and observations but thats why i thought it would be a good talking point.

      @@NeilHesterSkateboarding I saw another one of your videos recently about the Dunk highs! I like those shoes, I skate dunks too a lot. And yeah, I like what you said about putting in more work than others and still not progressing sometimes haha. I think I compared myself to my friends growing up, but they'd just been doing it for much longer. I'm 33 now so I stopped skating for like 15 years at some point, and I feel much stronger (but definitely not newer) than I used to be in many ways. But if I'd never stopped, maybe progression would have come to me, perhaps. I really enjoy the pace of my skating now, though. It's better to not be the young guy, you wish you had the youth, but the experience is priceless! And yeah seeing footage doesn't always help! Sometimes you need to level up your skill a little bit, Hahaha. At my age I am pretty strategic about how I conduct business. I've gotten into doing some squats (sets of 25) and stretches before skating, but I don't like doing them in public so I do them at home and I feel like it helps me when trying to do more difficult tricks than I have done before. Of course some food I might eat feels more sluggish while protein foods make me feel like it's all working, as I want it to. Also I drink like 2 glasses of water right before going out to be optimally hydrated (the muscles love this) and skating my best. But don't drink the water too early, it has to be at the door, or you'll be peeing by the time you get to the park lol ...Also, I get burned out on things but I already know that. I have only so much energy before old-man mode kicks in sometimes.

      @@NeilHesterSkateboarding Yeah I guess that it’s gonna get worse. My health is getting sketchy though. But my habits are getting better, mostly. It could’ve been much better these past few years. Skating makes me feel like I’m running from it for sure… but I don’t wanna think about that! I always blame myself for not skating enough, though. Mostly when I get hurt… I ask myself if I’m not focused enough, or if I’m only thinking I’m focused when I go skate. That’s probabl not wrong, I could probably make myself skate daily but that’s not where I’m at with everything else in my life at the moment. But if I do skate too long in one day at my current state, and I get bruised enough, then I turn into a huge whiner and wanna go home lol But I usually find myself progressing. I also hit my the outer edge of my knee the other day, or right below it, the little bone that you can feel below your knee to the side. It was on a manual pad, and I hate that it was my good one and now it’s all clicky. And the bone sticks out all ugly now lol. Swelling went down with the compression old bones thing. Then I smashed it into the ramp on a frontside kickturn like a noob… :(

    Spot on Neil…. Skateboarding is all about repetition! Unfortunately loosing tricks is something that will starts to happens as we get older. I guess we will need to reinvent/adalpt how we skate so that it continues to be fun. I also think that it’s super important to know how to pick our battles to avoid injuries. I wish I could skate more often. At the moment I need at least a couple of days to recover before I can get anywhere near a skate again. 😂😂😂

    • @NeilHesterSkateboarding
      @NeilHesterSkateboarding Місяць тому

      Cheers Ronaldo 👍🏻 Eventually age will catch up but I’m no where near ready to start slowing down, I’m still improving so I’m still better than I’ve ever been before I just have to remind myself to keep practicing the things I want to keep. I’m not even worried about injuries at the moment because I’ve not had anything happen that’s slowed me down more than a couple of months. So as long as I keep stretching and moving I hope to continue that way. Also part of what I was taking about with making sure to skate several times a week means I don’t need so much recovery time, often I’ll skate 2 or 3 days in a row and I truly believe the more you keep going even if you ache a lot you loosen up pretty quick and the pain goes away until the next day and then you just do it all again just like you would if you were a regular gym user, you just have to push through it. Well that’s what works for me anyway.

    Excellent review. Their product has a great bang-for-buck reputation in the snow world. I bought an Outdoor Master bike helmet a while back and I rate it, really great product for the price and it performed well in Virginia Tech's (US uni) destruction tests. But one thing that bothered me was the number of quick, low-quality reviews by small channels who all basically said it is the greatest thing ever; just seemed a bit sus. In contrast, I appreciate review depth and cons you give.

I really want to be honest with my reviews i feel like there's so many that are just saying what the manufacturer wants just so they get more fee stuff, that's really not what I'm about and i also only agree to review things i'm actually interested to know more about myself. I've reviewed a few helmets now and they all have their own little quirks so i feel like there's always something specific to say about each one.

    Love this video. Great reflection. I think it’s a bit like golf. No one goes golfing with one club. You wouldn’t want to use the same club as a driver that you would as a putter. I think having multiple sets of wheels in the bag is essential for folks like me and yourself. The wheel that performs best for you on skatelite is unlikely to be the wheel that performs best for you on polished concrete etc. I have 6 wheels in my rotation that I used based on the park I’m riding. The majority of people who skate just don’t care or they don’t understand why they like what they ride or they can’t afford 10 different wheels

    • @NeilHesterSkateboarding
      @NeilHesterSkateboarding 2 місяці тому

      Thanks ! Yeah I can see the parallels you are drawing there. Although I personally was keen to find one wheel to rule them all so I didn't have to ever change wheels to suit where i'm skating because its just time wasted i'd rather spend skating. I think I was pretty much there with the spitfires but am always keen to keep my eye on whats out there just in case something better comes along. I've settled on Bones SFT 84B 60mm which are every bit as good as spitfires but with a slightly faster feeling on smooth concrete. The X99's were just too soft for me so i now just keep them in my bag in case of emergency. I'm a firm believer that you can "learn your wheels" and become familiar with their characteristics so you can actually skate just as well with any of the higher tier options with just a little bit of exposure. I proved that to myself by switching over to the bones 84b after initially thinking they were too hard and slippery on wood, now i know exactly how to ride them and i never slip out unless i make a silly mistake. I used to have 2 boards (one for vert and one for boles and mini ramps) but it just became a pain to manage and I got used to riding the mini ramp bowl board on vert ramps too. I think our minds are clever enough to adjust to anything within reason and i prefer sticking to just one setup if i can.
