I have to say how impressed I am regarding your sawmill, great power balance, a very responsive, snappy operation. As a long time sawmiller myself, the crisp sound of the cut when eveything is good and sharp is music to my ears. Truely enjoy watching and listening. Nick, North West Farmer (Oregon)
Happy Thanksgiving to the whole mill ,the cabin is looking awesome ,thanks for the video today ,
Happy Thanksgiving Ian and family. Your cabin is looking amazing and it will be so nice when you get to finally move in to it. Greetings from Edmonton Alberta(aka the freezing white north -21c/-6f)😳
Sweeeeet....
Very nice ! I’m new to the channel, Thanks to Clint at C&C. Looking forward to seeing your stuff.
Popped up on my page and was intrigued by this so watched. Not disappointed. Looked up your web page as well. Do you use the saw dust to make pellets or do you sell it off to someone else to use?
We sell it to anyone who wants to come in and buy it! We also deliver
I was wondering why on the first cut on the outer portion of the log you cut it with the horizontal blade. Just seems like an unnecessary cut adding a lot of extra cuts on those teeth. I was just curious I would think your scrap chipper would be able to handle most if what we saw coming off at full width
I know it might appear that way. But once you start sending wife stuff through, that’s when it start clogging. Also leaving the edgers close to the cut already makes for a quick follow up adjustment. I also like having the edger as an indicator on every cut I make. If the head saw doesn’t clean the edger mark off in the first pass, I don’t want to make any more cuts on that log without filing. I don’t want to chance making bad lumber.
C&C Thanks
Thank you:)
A good friend of mine was a lineman and was trying to free some lines from a pile of trees that had fallen in a snow storm. He lost his life to a vine maple that was bent over like this. He was a good man. I now always cut several lines into the backside of any bend.
I’m extremely sorry to hear about this. My condolences to the loss of your friend. This stuff isn’t a joke. I know a few people in my area that passed the same way:/ And tree trimmers are getting on here saying cut it at the top.
I’ve seen a spring loaded tree with a diameter of 2 inches knock someone’s teeth out when they cut through it. Gotta read bind/tension or it will destroy you before you realize what happened.
That’s awful to hear and extremely unfortunate. A tree trimmer just commented and said cut it at the top🤦♂️🤦♂️
This is the exact type of technical video I had been looking for and just missed looking through your video list in the past.
There’s going to be some things happen here at the mill, and I’ve developed my video skills since this! I’m eventually going to re-do this one, as well as do more technical stuff on camera
nice sawing n wood ty Ian
Thank you:)
@@Helmsburgsawmill Happy Thanksgiving
Geez, man, out that camera on a stand. I got dizzy in the first 2 minutes of the video.
Ya he apologized to me about that
Being a professional tree trimmer I would have started at the top of the tree and worked my way down rather than trying to cut it over my head potential mouse trap
🤦♂️🤦♂️ no logging crew could have you if you wouldn’t make a cut over your head. Huge handicap. Also, read all the horror stories in the comments about people making cuts, the ways I say not to
C&C referral. Great content🤘
I’m glad you enjoy sir!
Is that a degreaser or anoil you are applying?
@@AndrewAHayes it’s WD-40! To line the teeth. I also sprayed the saws down and rubbed a little rust/build up off
Like changing the bit on a lathe. Clever.
You got some great ash !
Twas a great batch!
Complete crap. Widdle the top back first!!! It still has a chance to come back and smack you,, and look how it fell. You're just goofing off trying to make a video.
If you were a member of the channel you would see I was cutting some Poplars that were over 1000 bdft. I cut every one of these when I log. And I mean, duh, it is a UA-cam channel
Wrong,, you should have cut a few pieces off the end and worked your way back. You left the snag hanging above your head while you were cutting,, how do you know it won't swing back or something crazy!
Because of the distance he was from the cut he made, the upper portion couldn't reach him. While I disagree with the way he did this one, he did assess the possibility of it coming back as you discribed when falling it at the base, and it wasn't possible.
That’s the worst place to start. Catapult
That is a horizontal edger - -not a vertical . .LOL
@@sirrick59 which way does that shaft run? Google vertical edger
A pole saw works great on that size. But cutting at the correct place is essential. I just have a arm powered pole saw and many chainsaws
So I’d been wanting to make a video with these. And yes I walked up on it and thought it was a tad high. However that’s what I’m cutting timber with. And it’s part of what I do! I would definitely say use a pole saw if you have one available
@ I learned from doing ground work for a tree company. After I became the boss I kept eye on the ground help and for some reason the newbies always wanted to start where the most tension was. One home owner cut a apple branch bent from snow and the butt flipped smacked him in the face, broke his nose and knocked front teeth out top and bottom. he said when he came to his dog was licking his face
@ it’s handy to have a pole saw for periodic use when just a little of holding wood from the face cut is left and also when in doubt. But they get easily pinched
Good video 👍 I've never seen how your edger saws were constructed, wasn't sure if they were fixed teeth or swage teeth. Guess I know now. Thanks for the spotlight on that 😊 Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 if we don't see you before then.
@@lyleharkness-rv5vf a video will probably come out on Thanksgiving! I won’t have time to make one tonight. I plan on getting more of that stuff on as well! Happy Thanksgiving!!
that last one made some pretty lumber red oak i s my favotite and red elm i have red lm in my house for trim how many hp is upper saw sure wish we had a overhead i have the plane 24in that came out of art fennemans mill in holland in
@@charlietanner6211 I love Red Elm!! I had a small beautiful batch set aside to put in my house, and it got sold when I wasn’t around😭😭. The top saw is 35 I believe

Is this what the kids call ASMR?
I could hear the difference! night and day man! incredible and all these years have gone by without me even caring about such useless crap!
Working at the mill has taught me to use my senses when operating and fixing!! It’s essential!
Sounds better. Very noticeable. That’s nice oak lumber. Great job! Thanks. 👍👍👍
I wondered how the blades worked.
Yes, noticeably quieter. and a cleaner cut. Really nice lumber today. Thank you, Ean.
Gotta use all the senses!
I agree with others ,night and day difference, Happy Thanksgiving to all at the mill, thanks for the video keep them coming
Happy Thanksgiving Jim!
I guess it gets pretty expensive changing those teeth out. Great video. Thanks for sharing. Happy Thanksgiving Helmsburg Sawmill family and employees!! 🦃🦃
Happy Thanksgiving!! And yes just changing teeth is expensive!
Just curious, can those tooth inserts be reground ?.. Any one...
Yes they can be sharpened. These ones were cached
Hi lan yes the teeth replacement made a difference, but the rip saw looks like it needs to be reset leaving saw lines on the timber, either that or the shaft bearings are wearing letting the blade to wander slightly. Still nice work and enjoy your vids thanks muchly for posting
I’ve addressed this a while ago. But if you look closely, that lip deviates in depth along the log. That’s because the top of the head saw blade isn’t forced into position. The top of the blade will swim in and out of a cut, depending on the feed rate and sharpness. The inverse applies to the top saw
@@Helmsburgsawmill that is exactly what my reply would have been. There are other factors also to be considered as to how the saw reacts. You addressed the main two. Log quality also comes into play. The saws(head and edger) can only saw what they get.
Who/What/Where/When was the Saw Mill? Please in detail show the electrical and hydraulics of the Saw Mill.
It sounds a lot better with the new teeth on there awesome job
Ian that blade was night and day different after the change. The sound made me think of starting my lawn mower and pushing into thick grass faster than I should and the motor takes major load all at once. Sounds that make ya go oooooh! I bet after a log or two more the vibration would have significantly increased too? Man I learn a lot from you and I don’t even saw. I’m a leather worker by trade and use you as a mental release. Thank you for sharing your craft and trade with the masses! I have been catching your new video when they come out and try to get in a few during my day while I am crafting myself. Anyway, keep up the amazing mill work and videography; it definitely shows why and how your channel is growing so well! Best Regards to the entire mill, Walter Happy Gobble Gobble day to everyone!
The lawn mower is a really good analogy! That’s a good comparison. I really appreciate your comment and knowing that my channel is a release! Take care and have a blessed Thanksgiving Sir🦃🦃
good afternoon! love the videos an sure appreciate your taking the time to film them and post them for us to enjoy. was hoping i could pick your brain, we've got an old belsaw mill that grandad had kicking around and i was just wondering uif you had any recommendations on a good place to get a blade for it with replaceable teeth. Appreciate the help!
Look up industrial carbide! I’m not sure where you’re located
I plan on putting up one more video before Turkey day!
Clint sent me here. Nice mill!
Thank you sir!!
I had a few walnuts like that after a storm knocked down a few huge trees in the farm.. i had no experience with chainsaw but did have common sense to know not to cut at the bottom of the trunk before releasing the pressure where they were bent Just made many small cuts on the back of the curves first until I seen the limbs lose tension then started cutting cautiously from the top end of the tree untill it the last cut was up in air then I fell the tree from the trunk knowing where it was going Then after that I saw videos of how to do it and it is pretty much like this video 😂 guy on videos said do not cut anything like this if you are standing too close to it and if you don't feel safe using the chainsaw go fet a pole saw and stay away from the tree(i own a hand pole saw now)
Didnt look up once.
Here from C&C
Fun watching Clint and Kevin tour your operation. Love small business operations. Thank you.

Best saw mill so far!

You started by cutting over your head. FAIL.
