A class, a, number one, video. Your explanation of what you were cutting, what the wood was like meaning, the log, impress the hell out of me. As far as myself, I’m an armchair Sawyer, so I don’t get a lot of work, so I live my life through you guys. Please keep up the same type of videos. Stay safe God bless.✌️🇨🇦
I had a giant cottonwood tree in my backyard that I warned my landlord about. It was at least 200 ft tall, and we have heavy winds here during the winter. Well one day I was watching TV when I heard what I thought was a gun shot. Then the house shook when the tree hit the house. The landlord denied that I warned them about the tree but I hard proof in an email so they had to repair my house and pay to remove the tree.
Hi Ian. I've no experience w/ sycamore trees. I NEVER encountered a dead sycamore tree. These cants reminded me of black oak & popular logs. A lot of sawyers do stop thier sawmills for slivers of wood. One " unmentioned " U--Tube sawyer showed. What happens to a loose piece of wood in that saw blade. Fortunately. Everyone was out the way. 😅😅😅😅 Dangerous " missle!" WHISTLE! I know the early U.S.colonial sawyers made flooring & furniture out of sycamore. Beautiful lumber. Thanks Ian. Have a good Thrusday evening the 12th. 🥰🙂🙂👍❤️💜🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌳
Yes!!! Those shake rings make those slivers!! I bet you saw the one didn’t you? But yes! Those will sometimes explode if run through the saw incorrectly. There is a right way. Or they fall down and make the saw heat up so fast🤦♂️
I live in east central Alberta, Canada. Lots of soft woods here.we have spruce, pine hemlock, fir, tamarack ,popular, Willow. There could be more, can't think of any more! I really enjoy your channel. You sound like a kind man! God bless you from Alberta!
I helped my Dad deconstruct an old “chicken coop turned into a house” in west-central Indiana about 25 years ago, and he was saving all of the 2” thick yellow poplar boards. They were anywhere from 1’-2’ wide, and HEAVY. He used the wood to build cabinets and tables years later.
So cool to see the heating oil tank and fuel tank outside the building. They were background to my life as a kid and I haven't lived anywhere with them in 50 years.
I made my first million working at a sawmill. We moved the mill onto the boundary and probably produced between one and two thousand board feet per day. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot my daily pay was four dollars! This was in the 1950s!
Sycamore has unique grain that makes an interesting table top slab finished with epoxy but be ready to fill lots of cracks and be patient. It’s difficult to work with.
@@braddobson2060 so honestly if I could convince people to not unsubscribe😂 I would love to put speed up videos on. My first video to do well, and has done the best so far, was speed up!! I think they would reach more people
You’re welcome!! I’m sure you’ve seen pallets slats that have some of those wainy edges. They would come from the outside piece of one of those cants:)
@@Helmsburgsawmill I have another question - with that big blade, how much horsepower does your motor have? - I think I saw that it's an electric motor. Also, what company distributes(d) or installed those kinds of mills?
my dad had a mill he sawed down big ol syc on creek bank got 34 ft log he waanted it o bad for barn truses but we couldnt get it out of creek in one piece oh what memories my uncle dad had a mill in holland in south of you
U did an awesome job on sawing that butt ugly sycamore stick. U took care of things right smart like especially the carriage. Me being a softwood lumber guy what does sycamore smell like?
Ring shake is when the wood fiber separates along the plane of the growth rings. It's caused by external stresses on the tree. I have zero experience with sycamore but I know it is quite common in eastern hemlock.
He actually provided a good explanation in the video, which is handy to have. At first blush pallets seem like a waste but in reality it’s actually good use of waste wood. Also make for nice kindling once the nails/staples are removed.
I plan on adding a lot of stuff like this eventually! Once it’s about the channel, and not being productive at work, I’ll make the videos as cool as I can

Good video Ian. I enjoy watching your videos and I like your sawmill setup.

I enjoy watching you saw the logs so masterfully. I like how you explain what you are doing in the beginning of each film. Keep up the good work Ian.

Nice sawing Ian ty

Quartersawn sycamore is a beautiful wood.made lots of Turkey box calls from it.
What company built your carriage and saw rig?
what size are those outer cants?
Anything 3" thick or thicker would make great Woodturning Bowl Blanks.
That really is pretty
I was wondering why you weren't concerned about the wain on the cants. Thanks for the explanation.
You’re welcome!! I’m sure you’ve seen pallets slats that have some of those wainy edges. They would come from the outside piece of one of those cants:)
Very efficient sawmill setup - I'm curious to know, what diameter has your main sawblade, and who manufactures them?
56 inches! Simonds saw blades!

Like wet hay!
what is a shake ring?
It’s a place within the grain where the wood separates. Call it, a log within a log, if that makes sense
Ring shake is when the wood fiber separates along the plane of the growth rings. It's caused by external stresses on the tree. I have zero experience with sycamore but I know it is quite common in eastern hemlock.
Is that a new discharge belt? 👍
What is the reason for cutting cants? I prefer videos with dialogue. Tough to learn much without information
They get re-sawn in pallets! We use wood that we don’t want to saw into anything else
@@Helmsburgsawmill Thanks for the reply.

Mount vacuum ducts beneath the carrage to clear the excess material in process. 🤔
We have blowers, and believe it or not, the get 95% of the dust
so sad that could not be quarter sawn
Safety first as usual. Speed isn't worth someone getting hurt or killed. No amount of product is worth a human life.

We don't have sycamore trees here in NC
North Carolina?!

need to add a cab view so we can see what you see

Pallet material larger size pallets hmm
We only have one saw mill that will buy sycamore they cut mining blocks out of it or something like that
It’s not a profitable wood! However, then cants be adding up quick. Production in size!! I cut a few blocks for ourselves too

In your opinion should someone work in a sawmill by themselves
Absolutely not. Hell to the no. Fire whoever is doing this if they refuse to stop. Some maintenance is okay. But actually turning stuff on… no!!!!
I might put fresh teeth I have on the bracket if I’m needing to get it done and know one is around, but that’s about it
