James here. I focus on saving cars and motorcycles through the repair of components, not their replacement. Anything that can be, gets recycled or reused. Doing things this way might take more time, but it produces little waste. I also believe in conserving water, hence the love of air-cooled technology!
Throughout these videos you will also find themes of history, exploration and nature, as well as some items written in Europe's oldest language of literature, Irish. The Irish words are to appease the rust fairies. At this stage I'll try anything to get some projects finished.

NSU Prima Restoration Part 6 - Engine Disassembly, Right Side
It's been a while since the previous video, so thanks for your patience! A shed clear-out, elusive Lambretta tools and the day job have meant the wait for this video was longer than expected, but here it is in all of its glory! Enjoy!

These instructional videos are by far the best i have seen, they are very well produced and your clear, concise style with just a little humour is exactly what is needed. I have a rusting NSU in my shed and you have inspired me to get started, but why stop at number 6....there is so much more to be told! Well done, thank you.
@@martinmckeever7320 Thanks a million for the lovely comment, Martin! Much appreciated. The process of gathering bits for the next video is nearly complete, so fingers crossed I can start that soon.
Is it imperial or metric nuts and bolts ?
@JosefmengeleNHS2021 I'll have you know that this is a quality German product! Metric all the way.
Hi where did you get the flywheel roller bearings from thanks.
Hey there, think I just got them down the road in the local bearing supplier.

@@antonycullen6225 Thanks a million for the comment, Antony! Yeah, I agree, it is waaay better and still going strong.
@techshebeen I currently use a 1965 raleigh rsw16 to commute to work on. 3 speed Sturmer archer. Its basically the exact framework for this motorcycle. Totally in love with it but the rear break cable snapped the other day and having trouble replacing it....any ideas? It lasted 59 years lol
@@antonycullen6225 that's a cool bike. There are still companies in the UK making bespoke/made to order cables, if you cannot find an NOS Romac cable on eBay I'd say try get a new one made up. When doing so, always get two made so you've a spare.
Hi great videos I have just brought one picking up this Friday looks very good
@@padymac1 Good stuff! It's a hell of a ride! 😂
Very good video and very informative and very helpful. One thing that confuses me: the oil seals, other videos showing the spring side of the oil seal is facing inside?
@@nitro74cs Thank you for the message! Yes, I agree, the oil seals are very strange. Normally they would face the other way around, but both the Motobécane and Raleigh Wisp service manuals say they are fitted the way in the video. I don't know the reason and at this stage I don't know if anyone does for sure any more, but that's the way they're supposed to be. Quite odd. 🤔

Thanks for a new show! It is so very interesting. I am a happy owner of a Red NSU Prima D 1958! It has been driven on the roads in the south of Sweden. Very nice vihicle. @@rangeguard I'm really glad you enjoyed them and thanks for the kind comment! I will have another VW video coming along over the next few months, as I have a new thermostat to fit. 💪
@techshebeen Oh, I think it will be very useful! By the way... Regarding the thermostat (for the engine) - you did it in one of your previous videos) I'm just about to have a major overhaul and I wanted to ask you. Isn't a thermostat smt like a consumable part?... I was just looking for a similar number just yesterday after your video - and I couldn't find anything (of the new ones)... Mysticism! Don't VW make it anymore?

Just finished watching the series as I am going to be pulling and servicing the engine in my 77 in the next few days. I wanted to thank you; this series is invaluable, the results are stunning, and the videography is both soothing to watch and incredibly well done. For anyone doing the altenator bearings: the two bearings are different sizes. The one which is on the shaft is a 051903221A bearing and the one in the housing is a 6203 RS C3. It is better to search for these parts numbers rather than "VW 1973 alternator bearings" as they cost $6 if you find by the parts number rather than $40 if you buy from a vw distributor. Also, there is a useful tool I found while doing this for removing the bearings. You can look for "bearing puller kits" online that are not too expensive. I spent an hour trying to dremel mine off and wasn't able to get it. The bearing puller kit took it off in 3 minutes including setup time. Great videos by the way, they are just what I needed to fix up my bus!
Watched all four of your videos two or three times now as I’ve just acquired a 1971 bus with the same engine. I’m sure I’ll use your videos when I pull my engine for a refresh. Excellent work and attention to detail, definitely the best step by step video showing each part in detail. Brilliant 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@olivertowers5710 Thanks a million for the great comment, Oliver! Best of luck with the new bus! 💪💪💪
Beautifully restored engine! Thank you for sharing!
@@MEE-gf6du Thanks for the great comment!
Just a few notes. The flywheel should be machined equally on both surfaces. Disc surface and pressure plate mounting surface to retain the correct distance. Also the main issue with these old factory dual carbs are the throttle shaft bushings. Absolutely make sure the shaft/bushings are perfect. There is a huge write up on the correct steps to adjust/set the carbs. When they are perfect there is nothing better as a dual carb setup but if one thing out of 30 adjustments is out they are hours and hours and hours of diagnosing.
I really enjoy to see your videos! Excellent made! As my 1952 NSU kick-lambretta needed same coparable support some years ago I am really ecited to see you working on the right engine side which I could not finish finally. Everything else is comparably easy to fix I feel… so I left out gearbox as well as right side main sealing. So the scooter is running well, but consuming and loosing gearbox oil. Luckily not leaking into the brake. Frank
@@frankst5889 Thanks for the comment, Frank! Sometimes it's just easier to keep topping up a leaky box when time is short. My VW is getting the same treatment, so I understand. I'm really looking forward to getting the next NSU video finished but my everyday job keeps getting in the way! 😭
can you give me some more info on the 3 white numbers on the tins i have 340 on my tin ?/
@@Coltess69 I honestly don't know for sure what they mean; could be an inspection number or a production run. I'm open to enlightenment on this one.
@techshebeen no I have looked on the net there's nothing on this but I intend to do the same as you and put the number back on to the newly painted tin
would this fit in a 914?
@@ernie-qu9em In my experience, depending on just how much metal one is prepared to cut away, anything can be made fit anything.
Next time, if you take the carrier bolts out at the top of the gearbox bell housing you can drop the engine down with the gearbox with the engine totally complete. I think you need to undo the small screw for the gearchange linkage and pull the linkage off the front of the gearbox so it doesn't bend.
@@chrisstuckey64 That's the easy way!
