Japanese Maples - My 3 New Trees from Plantentuin Esveld (Nursery in the Netherlands)

Here are my 3 new maple trees that I recently ordered from 'Plantentuin Esveld', a nursery in the Netherlands (500 km away from Hamburg). Price of 3x 20 Euros for 3l pots was OK, only shipping costs to Germany were a bit higher with 18 euros (shipping by DPD). Payment was via invoice then. The trees arrived well packed with hay inside the box. What I did not like is that they wrote they will sh...

Hello everyone! This year I have to start with something bad for me... my acer palmatum Herhaim is dying. From the beginning this tree was a bit strange as already in spring '22 it did not look and grow as expected. Maybe the tree did not like the soil, maybe I pruned it too much and it suffered from late frost or fungus then... I don't know. I am not sure yet if I will get me a new one. Let me...

where do you buy your japanese maples from? Your collection is really nice.
Thank you very much! Some trees I bought on ebay and the others from various nurseries... Baumschule Hachmann and Nielsen in Germany, Esveld in the Netherlands and Steven Roff in the UK (before the Brexit).
Gutes Video.
Hi!! I laughed with the comment for Orange Lace... My Orange Dream is still pushing new leaves... They are closely related, so I guess it's a feature of that cultivar... I believe your trees will show even better colors the following weeks, this is not the end!!
Inaba shidare...It's the wood that really strikes me. That is a beautiful specimen. Wish me luck in my first Japanese maple seed harvest tomorrow; from around 12 trees around the neighborhood. Great way to meet neighbors. I will get them under soil and hope for hundreds of seedlings to screen through in 2025!
Good luck then! 😄
Another fall time with super awesome colors!!! Nothing bad to say about, I will fallow your steps soon 🤓😉
Awesome Great video and I like your video my friend Thank you very nuch for sharing Regards
Thank you very much!
Tolle Sammlung 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Very Very good video thanks you like 💯👍🤩
The reason they are not looking as good, is not because of the soil quality but because you have repotted it. Maples in pots are very sensitive to this and it takes two years to return to previous colours and health. It is due to the amount of soil around the out roots. I have many maples in pots and it took me quite a longtime to figure out the reason. I bought some larger maples in a private sale and the were in large square wooden pots. They had not been repotted for 10 years. I had to root prune due to square rootball and these trees are only just recovering now and the root prune was nearly 4 years ago.
With root pruning I have no experience yet. But I believe that it is much harder for a tree to recover when you root prune after ten years without any repotting. I repot every 3-4 years and always check that the next pot size is only a bit larger than the old one. And when I pull out a tree from the pot and see that there is still enough room for more roots I wait another year. In the past this worked fine when I only used rhodo soil. But this season I can really see a big difference with the new soil. I will check each tree soon and if the roots still look healthy maybe I will change my mind and will not repot again now.
Your explanation is good. I learned a few years ago to reduce the size of the root ball to adapt large maples and to renew part of the root system. It has worked very well so far and that's it, 2 years after adding a maple is when it finally adapts and everything is ok. In my case I don't prune much of the branches when I remove roots, always in the following spring the maple decides which branches to remove from the way, it was a personal experiment. Even so, every year I must prune part of the branches so that they are aligned, reinforce other branches and so that they do not grow much since I have a few that are more than 8-10 years old and even more.
What kind of soil did you use exactly?
In the past I always used rhododendron soil with good results when the drainage was good too. But last year I tried a new peat free planting soil but with pH above 6. Not a good idea.😕
@@Acerdorer sorry to hear that.hope your plants will bounce back next season.
Looking great! Amazing how acid soil affects the autumn colours of maples.
Indeed, thank you! My conclusion also is that I will look even more on the pH value. The bad soil that I used was over 6 and besides peat free!
How many days can the leaf stay on fall colors
I think 1 to 2 weeks max. It really depends on the weather.
how much sun recieve your maples in fall?, how many hours
Currently my maples get direct sunlight for about 3-4 hours I would say, from 11am.
Hey! Another good start this season! The already colorful autumn maples are beautiful! In the old corner of "Osaka" the Ueno Yama and Kamagata look very good to be the first maples. I hope that compost is not too bad for the other maples that are about to transform their color, you always had very good results and your climate there always accompanies you. Don't worry so much, we wait for the following video with the coloring of almost all remaining. See you soon!
Hi again! Thank you. Hope that I am at my parents this year when also the big Osaka is fully red. Last year I missed the color peak on it. For me it is very interesting to see that the maples in rhodo soil look the best. The other maples I really have to repot before next season. The soil is too bad (peat free and with pH above 6) and I don't expect any good fall colors here. Fingers crossed that the roots don't look too bad.
@@Acerdorer You are right about the compost mix but I still think you are in luck since the roots advance slowly in the maples. It will give you quiet time to do it how you want in the next season. I also trust that you have good results when the cold remains in your area. Apart from this, at the end of September a package came from Hachmann with "Golden Treasure" and "Glamour", I will see what they will do starting in the spring. Now I'm waiting for a package from Esveld with some dwarf maples: Kiyohime, Tama Hime and Chishio Dwarf, excited to see them better from spring. The same thing will happen to you with your "Ariadne" and "Orange Lace" and you will be very excited! Delighted to see video from your parents' garden and some gardening that you keep going for the color. See you soon!
Wow, again more maples for you. Hope they will do well also. My balcony is full enough for a while if all trees survive. In the moment I also cannot bring more maples to my parents garden. Next year I will reappraise the situation again then. Now I am just hoping for some more good fall colors. For sure I will also make a fall video from my parents' garden but I will be there only on the first weekend in Nov. Hope it will not be too late then.
@@Acerdorer I understand your balcony space and everything’s there with full life, congratulations for these awesome views! I hope those maples can arrive well before the leaves fall inside the box and then maybe a short video how they are. It’s a good idea on the date that you are going to be at your parents' house, it will be a good show. Thank you.
Fingers crossed that you will get your maples still with leaves on. When you make a clip I will watch it for sure. Would also be interesting to see your Golden treasure and Glamour. Golden t. is also on my list but I always decided to take another cultivar when I was at Hachmann. A pity that the local sale is closed now.
Nice one ! Mine are still summer color . How cold is this now ? What zone are you living in ?

Hi and thank you! Hamburg is in zone 7b/8a. In the moment we have around 7-12 °C.
@@Acerdorer thank you
Name maple 🙏
All the names are in the chapters. Please take a look in the info box below the video. Thx for watching.
Hey Acerdorer, thanks so much for your wonderful videos! I was wondering will you go again to do a fall color video of hachmann nursery? i loved the one you did last year ! ( i even bought some of those plants) How is your taylor doing? it was gorgeous in one of the videos, sadly i already killed 2! what is your secret? if you stop by to italy we should meet!
Hello and thank you very much! Great to read that my videos also made you buy some nice trees.👍😊 I had planned to go to Hachmann again for a new fall color video but then 2 weeks ago I had to read on their website that they will not open again for local sale because of a skilled worker shortage like in many other industries currently. Therefor unfortunately it makes no sense for me to go there now. Hopefully they can and will open again next year if they find the necessary employees. My Taylor was in a very shady spot all summer and is indeed doing well now after a long recovery period. A lot of small twigs and one major branch I had to remove but it seems to be ok now. Next year I will keep it in the shade from the start and will also protect it longer/better from late frost. The acidic rhododendron soil seems to be ok for this tree and my maples in general. A lot of trees on my balcony look bad this year as I tried a new non-rhodo soil. But this was a very bad idea. So I will repot my trees again soon or next spring. Hope they will survive. Greetings to italy from Hamburg!
@@Acerdorer Thanks so much for your thorough answer! Wow it's sad about Hachman! It is definitely my favorite place to buy maples, they are super nice! What about Nielsen? will you go there for a video? Anyway i hope to see you in italy at some point!
Nielsen would be an option instead for a fall color video this year but I cannot promise it. I also cannot buy more for myself in the moment.🥺 Italy is also a little far and I really don`t know when I will be there again. (I have only been in Tuscany I think already 20 years ago🤪) Have a nice weekend!

I wonder if Esveld has acer palmatums Mila and Katja? Unfortunately because of the unwanted Brexit in the UK, I don't know how to contact this Netherlands nursery now, although I do know that both these acers were the late Dick van der Maat introductions.
Mila they don't have.😔 Otherwise I also would have taken one. Brexit...well... Before, I also ordered some maples from UK from Stephen Roff via eBay. I don't remember a specific nursery name. Maybe you also know them already.
@@LovingLincoln Are you Carl?
No kidding!!! I just received an order from Esveld recently, last Friday. There were also 3 maples and I have uploaded a short with the opening of the cardboard box and the presentation of them. The truth is from there they are all great, I have ordered almost 20 maples last year and they are all very good. In your case I really like the Ariadne, I found it in Madrid but it sold for 700 euros because it was quite large. Its leaves are excellent and quite colorful with sun exposure and then some will burn in the hot summer. I have had the Orange Lace but I have removed it this year because it grew very quickly and it bothered me in my terrace design. I hope that it goes very well for you with this maple and with the others as well. You already know that thanks to you I have ordered several from Hackmann and Nielsen. Now I'm waiting for a shipment from Hackmann with the "Glamour" and "Golden Treasure". You got angry and changed the name from "Glamour" to "Trompenburg". Hackmann says that Glamor is an exclusive variant of theirs, as is Red Nails. We will continue enjoying until the leaves fall
That is indeed a funny coincidence! I did not know that you are still buying so many new trees as your balcony is also very packed already. Where do you put all those new trees? Interesting that you had an Orange lace already. Is it also in one of your videos? Does it get good fall color? I am really excited about Ariadne and wondering a little bit as I did expect a slightly different leaf shape but maybe it will change a bit on older trees. Golden treasure I was also always thinking about getting one. Maybe when I see yours thriving.^^ I was not angry about Glamour, was I? But yes, it is very similar to Trompi but not the same. The one I own I def. bought as Trompenburg. But it does not look that good this year. It did not grow much. I think I will visit Hachmann again this fall as I was not there in spring. But I really cannot buy more this year. :( ...only if I could get a new Purple ghost... or a Mikazuki... or a Moonrise... or...! ;))
@@Acerdorer hey! I’m happy you are back with the vice already 😄! I’ve deleted the video where it was “Orange Lace”, for few views and less interest on it. From my terrace I removed because it was very leafy but also the maples order was different too last year. Now it is growing down in the urbanization but a dog bit it and left a small branch, I will see what will happen to it later. The fall colour is very awesome! For me is similar with a mixture from Jerre Schwartz and Orange Dream but you will see your better his fall color next year not this one. I’ve seen in 2 occasions the spring and the fall in Ariadne, is absolutelly amazing!!!! You got it finally and I will watch your videos in fall and next spring. His veins and shades are ok at full sun in spring and shadow in summer…is a bit crunchy in hot summer also. About Glamour I was inspired from you last 2 years I guess and finally I will have mine. Yes…I “have” space by placing 2-3 maples together depending on their size. Of course when I’m changing with new varieties, I’m doing latelly bonsai from some older with 3-4 years of having grown up on my terrace. Soon I will put a short with one called “Brandy’s Dwarf” wich I converted about 2 months ago in a bonsai. Right now are other trying to survive called Seyriu as a bonsai also. So my space is so bushy but very cool for me at the same time, is like a forest, maybe over 60 varieties with all the size. The place where this tree was Brandy’s Dwarf, now are Red Wood and exiles like this in doing lately. Other cultivars I gave away already for open the space, “normal” cultivars. Now from Hackmann I have to wait until mid of September and I will grab a video when will be the fall because they are green now. I have the Mikazuki and Moonrise, some shorts of them are on my “short” collection if you wanna to watch them.
@fisiomanuales I have Ariadne and many other japanese maples awarded the AGM (Award of Garden Merit) by the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) in the UK. Now I'm trying to purchase newer plants that are building a good reputation and avoiding acers like Taylor that are proving unreliable.
Thanks for all these infos again!😊 For sure I have to check out more of your clips in the future. To be honest I am not so much into video shorts but I understand that for todays generation it is totally common and better to get more views and publicity. Hope you will get some nice trees from Hachmann then and that they will arrive in good condition in sept. For Bonsai I don`t have enough patience... maybe one day, who knows. Next year I probably have to get rid of my big bamboo to gain more space on the balcony. For me it is already too packed and I don`t want to push the trees too close together. So everyone has his own liking.😄
@@Acerdorer ua-cam.com/users/shortsSBHXL4trIlQ?si=vNHF5PD8CDwOQV2_. Hello again and thanks for reply! Here you have the link with the first leaves in spring of Mikazuki, are another short later in May but this one is ok. I like very much the large videos more than 1 minute but I didn’t had the patience to learn how I have to cut sequences and put like you those subtitles. With the shorts seems to be easy to write anything with the UA-cam options and this is the reason why I’ve made many short video than normal videos. I’m thinking maybe in this autumn I will make a large video and having more options to watch many angles of the views as I have only a big forest in my terrace. I don’t know if many UA-cam users have a priority to watch quick videos as a short or good patience for the full large video. I’m 45 🤓 so I can’t judge this new generations either… The only thing I’m doing here is to share what I’ve learned to do as your channel has been the greatest inspiration for me and learned a lot from your experience with your Japanese maples varieties and also very important from your visits at these nurseries. About the bonsai I have had to learn the basic techniques to be able to modify the large root balls and then place these trees in small pots. Now this technique is useful for me to reduce the largest maples into bonsai, which then take up less space and I have also given as gifts to friends. I understand vert well your case with your balcony and now I’m curious what are you going to put in that place removing the bamboo.
Glad your Herhaim recovered as I want one after seeing its lovely fall colors.
So happy your Herhaim recovered well as I love its autumn or fall colours.😊😊
So sorry for spelling Herhaim wrongly in my first message!!!!😮
But living in the UK I'm finding a Herhaim difficult to find.
Hi Acerdorer, as a japanese maple lover I love your videos on UA-cam and would love to buy a hermain japanese maple.
Hello and thank you very much! Honestly I also know Herhaim only from Hachmann nursery here in Germany. So I am not sure if this is a cultivar that you can find in the UK, sorry. Even Mr.Maple in the US does not list it and they have a huge number of different varieties.
Vielen Dank!
Very good presentation of garden! Every year is different and this year for example has been very good for me here where I live, a lot of colors but I know it has been disastrous for other areas. The heat, the heat...Jordan will always be the burned one, Taylor is a challenge. What a big tree Osaka has put on! Two years on land have been fantastic for him. Your parents' garden is a very good refuge for all you have brought, how about the current collection on your balcony?
Hi and thanks again! Some changes every year make it more interesting I think but it becomes more challenging to find the right new spot for a maple now as my parents' garden is too sunny for a lot of cultivars. Jordan always stays strong every year but Ukigumo for example does not really grow for the last 2 years. And the garden is also very packed so small trees are hardly visible now like my Red nails or Shishigashira. So, rearrangement will go on. I am also trying to convince my parents to create some new potential locations and make the lawn area a bit smaller but still I have no success here. The trees on my balcony could do better this year. The new soil that I chose for repotting was not worth it. The trees did not thrive well in it. Hopefully they will at least survive. In fall I will check the roots and maybe repot again. We will see.
@@Acerdorer Hello, thank you for detailing the development of all the maples and the problems you have encountered. About the problem with the substrate that you have used and you say that it has not worked, I use a German brand compost mix. In a proportion of 3:3 I mix acid and normal "Composana" and add 1:1 of blonde peat and humus, I repeat this formula until the corresponding pot is filled. It always gives me good results and above all there is no stress for the maple when I decide to reduce the root ball both to adjust and to renew the soil after 3-4 years. Apart from this, it is wonderful that your parents accept your proposals but they are setting limits so as not to invade them too much 😄. It would always be a great pleasure for me to hear about your progress in this exclusive gardening. Have you thought about uploading an updated video of your terrace? Thank you for your collaboration because it is always of great help.
Hey! Sorry for my late answer. Thank you for your infos/tips. I just bought a new soil now from a local garden center that once got a good test result. It has pH 5,3 and contains peat. I will then only add some perlite to improve drainage. Hope my trees will like this soil more then. Composana I also know. I put an interesting seedling from my Osakazuki in a small pot with Composana regular plant soil at my parents and the seedling did develop well so far. Unfortunately an update video from my balcony has to wait a little longer. First I want to repot some trees. I already wish you great weekend!
@@Acerdorer hey! I am very grateful for your efforts in general and don't worry at all that you responded later. Me I am very glad that you have found your recipes and that you also explain them, it is a world of knowledge about what growing those Japanese maples entails. From what I have read at a general level, there are maples that are slightly acidic, others more so, others that like some soil with clay and others not so much...so it is good that we invent our recipes to improve both resistance and color of these trees. It will always be a great pleasure to hear from you and as you are saying, there may be a video of your balcony or it will be close to winter.
Thanks for the great video!
My Shaina died with exactly the same sympoms, I suspect that damn fungus, because this happened 2 months after a repot... Same with my Hime Shojo... There's no cure unfortunately, and indeed it's best to throw away the tree and soil and thoroughly disinfect the pot
Sorry to hear. I did not buy Shaina again. In the nursery they also told me that this cultivar is often difficult in a pot. Most important for every acer is to prevent root rot with good soil and drainage. I repotted a lot of my trees with a different soil this year and most of them did not grow much or even look bad. I am really afraid of losing any of them again.
@@Acerdorer Same, 5 maples are in a standard potting soil bought from a nursery and they are in a bad condition... The rest I have them in a mix of 75% bark chips, 20% peat and 5% perlite and they look amazing! (Watering 2-3 times per week now)... For my next mix I'll replace perlite with pumice because perlite breaks down quicklier. I'm sure if you try that your trees would appreciate it. But since you are in Germany, I would use less peat (85-10-5 ratio) because of the cooler/wetter climate. I'm in Greece and it rained only 2-3 times since May, with temperatures above 35°C! Take care, Kostas
Thanks for the info! Your potting mix seems to be very good then. My bad soil is peat free and I think this might be a reason why my trees don't like it at all. I never mixed soil myself yet but maybe I should consider this. I recently bought a bag of perlite for addding it in my next repotting session. I read that lava mulch should also be good for drainage. You are absolutely right with the climate. it also makes a big difference. As we have more rain here again this summer I always weigh my pots to decide if I already have to water additionally. Don't want the soil to be too moist constantly. At least the drainage should be ok for all of my trees. Fingers crossed! Hopefully you always have enough water then to keep your trees alive. Have a nice weekend!
Can you reuse the pot?
@@jimbojackson2900 I cleaned mine with soapy water and left it under the sun for the whole summer... I read that the fungus dies in temps above 50°C... And just in case, I didn't use it on maples but some other indoor plant... not all plants are vulnerable to Verticillium
Vielen Dank für den Tip! Wohne in der Gegend und hatte nicht an Dittmann gedacht!
Keine Ursache! Vielleicht findet sich ja was schönes.
I really want to shape mine! These are beautiful
Gorgeous variety of colour! Have you got an OsakaZuki? 🥺 Just got mine yesterday and not a fan of the shape.
Thank you! You also found my Osakazuki but it is in my parents' garden now and still doing well. I shape/prune all my trees every year in early spring. I really don't like when twigs get too long and too close to each other.
Omg- thank you! These are beautiful
And the winner is...Beni maiko, with those intense pink flushes, like it's in bloom. And Amagi shigure holds that bright color so well!
Beni maiko's color is always unreal. I also love it.
beautiful gardn thanks for sharing and labeling the plants!
Thank You for watching!☺
Beautiful thank you. Who’s the ass shutting the gun?
Thank you! I think it's more than one ass.😆 There is a shooting range nearby.
My favorite JM tree
hello again! Very good explanation for each maple presented although the quality of the video has suffered when you have edited. I must tell you that last year I got tired of Taylor since she is a very naughty girl with sun, without sun. I'll accompany you on the love for Starfish! I have it hidden more by default because it gives an image to some empty branches of another maple and I have it together with the "Red Wine", that's how it looks. They complete in shades of red and almost but this maple with its curved leaves is very good. The Osakazuki is going very well in the parents garden, you know that I am very happy that you have placed the Red Nails but when it would be bigger the contrasts of the multitude of leaves would be better noticeable. This maple likes to grow well in both height and width and is a wonderful tree. Bravo for the collection you have in it. Your parents' garden looking great, very good colors this year.
Hello hello! Thank you. You are right, this times video quality is worse, right. It was a try to upscale FHD footage to 2k but I am also not satisfied with the result and it did not reduce the video file size or save processing time in the end. Next time I will again downscale from 4k. Taylor is a real diva! In our garden I can only try to plant it in the ground at the front door where is shade all day long. Or it has to stay in the container forever to easily move it around. Regarding Starfish I am excited to see how it will do there in full sun over summer and if it will hold the dark red color. For my Red nails I don´t know if it was a good idea to prune the main leader as the new twigs are growing very horizontally. Hopefully they will also lift up more later. I also could imagine to transplant this tree beside the Starfish at the pond where I first wanted to plant Taylor. I would rather like to see this tree when sitting on the terrace!🤓😃
@@Acerdorer You have tried very well with the Taylor, in my case perhaps a fungus got into it and it died this spring after 2 years of moving it several times. I hope you have very nice moments with the Starfish and see if it keeps the shade of red, I have one in medium shade and in August it turns very green. You have guessed the growth of Red Nails, it likes it up and to the side normally so next spring you will know what pruning you would best give it. I like that you have many plans with everything your parents keep in the garden and every video you make is wonderful. Good luck again this year with the Taylor!
Thanks a lot! I hope your maples will also do well this summer.
На балконе свой японский садик! Супер
You should try using perlite (20-30%) in your compost for aeration and draining. I find it helps to prevent overly soggy compost.
Where the location I love this maples 🍁 a lot
Hello! This gardencenter is in Groß Vollstedt in northern Germany.
Thank you for the posts!!🍁
Thanks for sharing
Really beautiful and envious garden. By the way the plant you guessed to be photinia is a pieris forest flame
Great! Thanks for the info. I just corrected the name.
'Taylor' is fantastic.
Great recording in your parents garden. I know very well the feeling waiting the full development of Red Nails, you will love this maple every year 😌 and specially every spring. Also I have remembered the shape of Mikawa and Osakazuki when they were in your balcony, now they are cool! Jordan is what it is, makes other maples look ridiculous 😄.
Thank you! It really makes a difference when a tree is established and doing well in the ground instead of just having it in a pot. I just hope that Osakazuki can really grow bigger there because of the terrasse and pathway beside.
@@Acerdorer yep all is true. I like the maples placed in the ground, are more realistic with the green or flowers also. Nice job you’ve done there.
Lovely keep buying
