Lot of good ideas here, mentioning Multiplayer alone gets you a Like.
U said everything I been thinking and some, I can not express enough how badly the mobs feel like small punching bags n we most certainly want multi player/ online play like in grand blue fantasy relink
I like tales of arise although I've only played all the games available on ps4/ps5 so far
Tales of the Abyss is definitely my top pick. The cast is just next level in that game and the story just hits in ways the series has just never topped since.
To me, the plot I found just so unbearably bland. With the rest of the Tales series, good or bad, they usually were memorable in some way, but with Arise, there is like there is nothing worth of note with it. It just feels so cliché and wooden with things just being painfully underdeveloped. The story in general just suffers from being a mostly generic good vs evil villain of the week story powered by the power of friendship. While it tries to present itself as otherwise, the longer it goes on the clearer and clearer it all becomes that it is your average anime fantasy story. This is also why the villains suffer so much in the character department, as they seemingly just exist to be pounded by the heroes and then for them to move on making just your common evil thugs. Even the closest the game gets to a central main villain feels more a like a footnote more than anything. And while the game tries to portray them as having had some redeeming qualities, it all just comes from small side notes, not really doing a good job helping their case. There is also a frequent failure of the plot to consider the side effects of its characters actions. And what makes it so frustrating is that the game repeatedly flirt with the idea of exploring these deeper topics yet backpedals at the last second or changes the subject. For the most part the story settles on being a simple anti-discrimination plot being content with simple answers to complex questions, not really digging deeper. Having completed the game, I am somewhat left with apathy towards it. It was just something that I completed then moved on. It wasn't bad or anything, but I wouldn't describe it as memorable either.
What I want most of all is a story that could rival the pure heart and honesty, but also harshness of Tales of the Abyss. Not that snoozefest that was Arise.
Well that you sure was your take on the Tales series… Still, I did agree with where you put Symphonia 2
Afraid of women, i see.
I cannot describe how much i hate this tierlist. Arises story was honesty so interesting and captivating and how could you SERIOUSLY rank symphonia C tier?
It was in B tier and any game in B tier or above is a game I love. I just happen to love 9 other Tales games more. And I stand by my Arise take. Its not a very good game. There are countless videos on UA-cam now breaking apart that game's flaws.
Tales of arise story is easily A tier tbh atleast to me
You said only mainline games, Dawn of the new world isn't canon to the symphonia timeline.
@@GabrielParr Bandai Namco reclassified the games in 2020 which made DoaNW a Mainline game
I played and beat tales of a rise. It was my first tails game. There was a surprising amount of voiceover work done in these things called skits as you know. However the writing was really generic and repetitive. They just kept repeating the same thing over and over again. The maiden feeling depressed or angry or some other kind of emotion and then the main character constantly showing concern and then her getting upset. And then the constant lines of how friendship makes things better and how they work together. It was very generic. The combat was also really bad. A lot of the enemies were just completely unbalanced. Wolves hopping around non-stop appearing to have no cooldown making it very difficult to hit them. Rock dudes jumping up slamming down three times over and over again. And the game even on very easy with the artifact is still extremely difficult compared to other games I've played. I still enjoyed playing it and had fun. But I have to wonder if the other games offer a much better story in much better writing.
Csnt take you serious with your hate on Arise. Arise was amazing.
This is one of the worst ranking video I’ve seen for any genre or medium of all time. Don’t cook again.
Can't stress it any further. Bandai namco where is them remakes
I love this game. Get a modded psp, ppl. Put your favorite roms on it and some emulators and have a blast. 😊
Just finished my first playthrough of Zestiria my self. I agree with you that the game was not as bad as I thought it would be, and I definitely enjoyed the early to mid-game aspects of it. I enjoyed the story, the characters, the themes and the world quite a bit. I tolerated the battles in the early-mid game, but in the late game and especially final battle, the terrible gear system really held it back quite a bit and so many enemies with lots of resistances and no weaknesses made it feel like such a slog to play. I didn't want to bother actually learning how the gear system worked but I discovered the final boss was impossible to beat the DPS checks with on Moderate difficulty with my gear. Very unfortunate. The ending was also quite lack luster and didn't explain nearly enough. Laila never really got explained either, and I never got prompted for when to handle Edna's brother. Overall, I still have to give this game a thumbs down because it's good aspects don't outweigh the bad ones enough, so I understand the hate it gets. If it just didn't have such a terrible gear system, it could pass pretty well. I'm hoping my first playthrough of Berseria is much better, as it's been overhyped like crazy. I also thought it was a sequel to Zestiria, I'm only now realizing it's actually a prequel lol, I was looking forward to seeing what world Sorey made
So hyped to play this again. Honestly I kinda think it was a mistake to give this game the xenoblade title, I wish they just just stuck with the original name X because that inevitably causes people to go into this game expecting it play like the other xenoblade games which it really doesn't at all. However, if you go into this game without those expectations and experience it for what it is, its one of the best rpgs I've ever played and is absolutely of the same overall quality you'd expect of any other xenoblade game even if it doesn't play similar to them. Being stuck on the wii u all these years makes it somewhat of a hidden gem among the other games regardless of how good it is so hopefully bringing it to switch will show many people just how incredible this game truly is.
On the topic of X, my main problem with it was that it went big at the expense of almost anything else. Exploration is great and all, but you can only look in awe at mountain size megafauna and inexplicable mega structures so many times in a row before it just kinda gets stale without more story to hook you.
even as someone who enjoyed it quite a bit, i can not deny that it has a decent amount of flaws and wasted potential. the way alisha was handled was pretty bad. i dont mind her being gone for a while, but the fact that shes gone for good while pay walled behind a dlc gives it a rather bitter taste. instead they could have spiced up the main story by getting her captured by the rolance empire due to her rashness and letting the party come to her rescue. basically adding one more story chapter. after that she would become a permanent companion. also letting sorey witness her getting interrogated and tortured for the sake of information extraction would have made for a decent twist as he tried to find a way to free her. showing him the true nature and malice of the human race. leaving sorey in disbelieve and forcing him to overcome another obstacle while questioning his role as a shepherd. as for the dungeons, they really needed a more unique layout. graphically, altho it looks mostly fine, in darker areas the game looks rather strange with the glowing characters. as for the skills and inventory system, it was too convoluted. the base idea of a matrix with stackable skills, rows etc. isnt bad, but the execution with farming gear and combining them is. also locking the game to 30fps is just mind boggling. what i really liked was the human companion aspect. the fact that they function as a mission book, giving you directions, recapitulate tasks and hints rather than having mission markers is a quite genius idea. the overall fantasy like feeling is also pretty great. my first game was vesperia and it made me feel like a child again, while this game managed to get kinda close to it. it is a decent game, but it could have been much more unfortunately.
I won't spoil the character quests for you, but yeah, Grune does get more involved in the plot... But not in the way you expected.
If the switch 2 has backwards compatibility I don't think it'll affect the multiplayer aspect too much
I arrive from the video of the switch DE announcement. i gotta say, pretty neat retrospective, a bit of a shame you kinda didn't explore classes that much, since the game incentivise you to constantly swap to unlock new passives and once you master one branch you can use that class weapons on all other classes too. Also NLA theme slaps. Plus is a bit of a shame is that you didn't talk about the best part of the game: the exploration and the side content that enhance the world building and straight up unlock unique options. Also half of the problems you found about gamelpay and "content dilution" could be applied to 2 aswell. Except X has the edge over 2 to my eyes because the Xenoblade 2 jump button is straight up the worse in the whole series. Xenogears had a better jump button than Xenoblade 2. This is still my favourite xeno game, even after 3
The Black Knight looks massively different, and there is a flash of light when the aliens were shooting at Earth in the scene that was _not_ in the original version of that cutscene. There is a massive retcon of some sort coming.
Most certainly, many were pointing out its story has to many gaps to fit into the chronicles continuity but I have a feeling they’ll shift the story quite a bit to make that work out.
@shotojae6007 as it stands it can't be in the same universe. But Xenoblade (and Xenosaga) exists in a multiverse. They can, and will according to Takahashi, be connected _somehow_
Well Future Redeemed name drops both Vector Industries (Xenosaga) and the Salvator factions (Xenosaga) as well as a news feed about the launch of the first 'Philadelphia class' colony ship, a reference to the Eldridge (Xenogears) The gist seems to be that the Conduit experiment on the Low Orbital Station split the universe and caused humanity to be scattered across dimensions, with the colony ships getting overtaken as they fled Earth and were thrown to the winds. And now, with the post Xenoblade 3 remerger of Alrest and Bionis' universes, the universes are converging back together again.
Ironic how a game with 22 character designers was the impetus to retcon the previous 2 games art styles to make it more consistent with the other games.
the lack of design consistency is probably the reason
This is the only one i hsvent played. Im so excited
WAIT WHAT - THIS IS REAL? THIS CAME OUT OF MOWHERE!
It's very real XD
ive tried like 4-5 times to get into symphonia and it just doesnt do it for me
9:59 isn’t it unfair and shallow to dislike a character because of their name?
@@s.a0411 Yeap, hence why I admitted that in the video.
You had me for most of this, but Malik and Teepo at the bottom of their games is unacceptable haha. Malik is a great troll character imo, thing is he does his trolling a lot more subtly, like teaching Sophie outright lies just to piss off Cheria, or actually humoring Pascal despite what everyone else thinks, or poking fun at Hubert in all the ways he knows will make him mad. Malik Beam is also one of the trolliest MAs in the series. Then there's Teepo, the crackhead puppet that ends up having some of the best skits and post battle lines in the series, especially in X2 (Gaius seeing into the void, Teepo asking Alvin to massage him, etc). Rest of the list was great though!
Favorites and Least Fav Each: Destiny - Leon and Mary, Chelsea for least since she feels like Filler Eternia - Farah, and Ras for reasons Xeno explained Symphonia - Raine, Genis if only for gameplay reasons than character Rebirth - Fav is Hilda, Least is Annie though Annie does get better Abyss - Favs are Tear and Guy, Least would go to Anise Innocence - Fav is Ricardo because Hot Sniper Dilf, Least is QQ since she joins very late Vesperia - Favs Yuri, Flynn, and Raven. Least are Karol and Rita since they can be annoying at times Hearts - Fav is Beryl, Least is Kor/Shingu since he's such an idiot. Graces - Favs are Sophie and Pascal, Least are Hubert for Story reasons and Richard for Gameplay reasons Xillia - Fav: Leia, Least: Alvin if only for that one scene with him, Jude, and Leia in Jude's Story Xillia 2 - Fav Ludgar, Least is Jude if only for Gameplay nerfs Zestiria - Edna and Zaveid for Favs, Sorey least fav since I found him pretty dull even by Tales MC Standards Berseria - Favs: Velvet, Eizen and Eleanor. Least: Rokurou Arise - Fav is Dohalim, I guess Shionne for least since she can be pretty cold and bitter at times Luminaria - Favs - Laplace and Raoul, Least is Leo since he's easily the least interesting of the cast despite being the short lived mobile game's poster boy.
I think this is a hard list to make. So well done lad! I think when it comes to Arise I honestly can't stand Shione at all. Now I don't find the cast to bland. But Shione just felt so spiteful and means to an end at the story. On the other hand I really like Law Seeing Law hate his father and capture him. Only to have second thoughts and save him and still lose him is some emotional scars right there His bromance with Alfin really runs it home for me as he never really get his conclusion with his father. Besides a battle at the post game that gives some closer. Law for me is simply a broken man who due to him letting his feeling makes his decisions Nd as a result lost everything And it wasn't til he lost everything that he started to grow as a man.
@@skyrander Law would have been my number 2 and Shion would have been my 2nd last. So we're not too dissimilar.
@@xenosanctum2531 happy to hear it! I really can't wait for your next tales video! How about a ranking of best to worst villain?
I guess I should put my hat in the ring. Here are my favorite and least favorite party member (excluding the mc’s) from what I played. my opinion Favorites: Abyss: Guy Vesperia: Karol Graces: Sophie or Hubert Xillia 1&2: Alvin Zestiria: Edna Berseria: Eizen Least favorite: Abyss: Anise Vesperia: Patty Graces: Pascal Xillia 2: Gaius or Muzet (didn’t use them much compared to the Xillia 1 cast, this one was a hard choice) Zestiria: Rose Berseria: Magilou
Velvet became my favorite as soon as I started Berseria, such a great design. Arche is very high as well, gotta love witches!
Everyone has their own opinion, but I have to disagree with almost 70% of what was said in the video. In the end, these types of lists don't make much sense since taste is a very personal thing. For example, I really liked Berseria's battle system, but the story didn't really grab me. I'm currently playing Arise and it's clearly an evolution of all aspects of the other games, and although I'm really enjoying playing it, it seems like they tried to make it more accessible to players who aren't used to the "Tales of" series, making the battle system more dynamic and less difficult. And this may be a negative point for many people, but I certainly wouldn't put this game so low on my list because of it. Lastly, I didn't find the boss battles that long. For me, it's still in the "Tales of" standard, those who have played FF12 know what a really long boss battle is.
Listen to close to all your tales retrospective. I love them. They are in-depth and fun to listen to in general. Thank you for making them!
KOS-MOS was in this version? bro.... this needs an english patch ASAP
Why tf they ruined combat mang. Dogshit
I like that everyone has unique rankings for these games. I just hardcore disagree with all the arise hate
I feel its better than the garbage that followed vesperia as its been dog shit. Yet took 2 years for dlc that the director said was not going to happen. I find them remastering past titles thier only way to go. Series is dead really
Arise was okay, but it was spunge mobs , i got tired. Skits got shite and i feel the magic went. Took them years for a boring dlc
The older games had more of a charm. The ones since after vesperia just didnt have the charm anymore. I might get tales of graces f. But they didnt really do anything last anniversary 🤷. I doubt rhey will do much this one. Would be nice if they bithered to remaster older ones. Tired of hearing about xillia, symphonia, zesteria berseria. There is others

I finally played Vesperia when it came out on Steam a few years ago. I was massively disappointed. It feels like a MASSIVE step down from Symphonia and Abyss in almost every single way outside graphics. The combat is far, far worse due to how long it takes to get basic Skills that you just automatically have in Symphonia or very quickly unlock in Abyss. It also has extremely long recovery frames, and SO MANY OF YOUR ATTACKS knock the enemy down and there's no visual indicator of when that enemy can take damage again unlike Symphonia and Abyss show with red blinking enemies. It halts SO MUCH of the game's combat and fun constantly and I absolutely detested it the whole way through, only to hate it even more when I finally unlocked Flynn and he does it EVEN MORE. The story and soundtrack were completely forgettable. I don't remember a thing that ever happened in this game, and watching the retrospective didn't really jolt any moments. The villains were laughably dumb, and 95% of the game is just Yuri asking "Are you sure you want to come, Estelle?" and her replying "Yes, I'm coming too." That's it. That's all this game's story was. It didn't pick up until the very end, and even then it wasn't all that good because the final boss was so dumb and disappointing and pointless. I remember something about Blastia being actually bad like Symphonia's Ex-Spheres, and something about Guilds and drama. That's it. That's ALL I remember from this game's story despite playing it very recently. While the party characters were all fairly decent, none of them really stood out or excelled in any particular way, much less were memorable. I honestly can't think of anything to praise about this game outside its graphics. That's it. Everything else was C to F tier. I don't know what other people see in this game to love it, but I wish I could see what they're seeing because it's just lacking so much.
@@genesisSOC Do you want me to explain why I think think this game is better than the ToS and TotA. I tried my best in this video but if you want some more detailed responses on a specific topic, ask away.
@@xenosanctum2531 No, I watched your video. It seems you just have the anchor point opinion of the game because it was your first Tales of experience. My first one was Phantasia on the SNES back in 1990s, so I have a very different view point on being able to watch the evolution of each Tales game as they were released. So you're willingly overlooking the many flaws within the game and see good things in the story and characters that I simply don't. The story sucks. The characters aren't good and don't carry the story forward like you say they do. The battle system sucks. The skills suck all the way through. Final Strikes are cool, but don't make up for the myriad of problems in the bad combat system. The music is among the worst in the series and has none of the Sakuraba magic, completely forgettable and no impact. And this is all ignoring the fact that the "good" half of the Tales team developed this game while the "bad half" developed Dawn of the New World, which was even worse. You offer all these concessions for the game that I can only understand you doing so by it being your first Tales of game. Which is fine, it's your opinion and I'm glad you enjoy it. I just didn't and wish we got an ACTUAL evolution from Abyss instead. We haven't had a good Tales of game since Abyss, though I admit I have not tried Berseria yet. It's just with how much overhyping people did on Vesperia, I'm just as reluctant to try Berseria since it'll probably disappointed me the exact same way. I already tried Zestria and hated it, barely able to play more than 5 hours despite having dozens of playthroughs of Phantasia, Eternia, Symphonia and Abyss.
It feels like some Dark souls elements were used for this game…
You gay.
Well, Kohaku (琥珀) does indeed mean "Amber".
Phantasia, Eternia, Symphonia and Abyss are the 4 best in the series. I could never get into any of the other Tales games. Each of these 4 games are a master piece in their own right, I love each of them so much and can replay them any time.
tales of zestiria is certainly most overhated one, despite being great, i liked how sorey was goodey two-shoes mc, being pure as can be, and having rose as companion who is stark difference while being almost equally pure, and it being technical sequal to tales of berseria by over 1000 years really adds up to its charm, seeing the same places being entirely different cause of velvet waking up 2 empyreons with rude wake up really showed amazing story telling
I’m confused as to why the game calls the action of opening a treasure chest “kill” lol
