  • In this video I rant about the poor state the Tales series is in at the moment with entires taking way too long to come out, past entries being left on dead consoles and a genral decline in qulity games being made.

Tales of series died when Team Destiny stopped making sprite based games. Don't get me wrong, Graces was great, but it lost it's magic in becoming another fully 3D Tales game. As far as other Tales games go after Graces, I didn't mind what I played of Zestria and Berseria but I will forever long for another 2D entry in the series.

I think it died after Xillia because after that sub series the series seems to have shed its visual identity and that eventually lead to Arise shedding the anime identity altogether.
Zestria looked more like a Suikoden game to me than a Tales game and although Berseria looks more like a Tales game the character designs were very generic aside from Velvet.

To put insult to injury with Bamco's handling (or lack thereof) with Tales' back catalogue, Atelier has every one of its PS3 games ported to PS4, therefore playable on PS5. There's a soon to come remake of the first Atelier game, Atelier Marie. Said remake is also being packaged with a port of the original game which is also being localized for the first time. All made possible because Koei-Tecmo and Gust made use of Ryza's momentum. Meanwhile, Bamco killed three mobile games in 18 months, milked Arise in said mobage and merch to the point of the fanbase being tired of it, all while not doing any DLC after one instance with an SAO collab. Then you have their barebones Symphonia port that was a port of the pc port.. which was a port of the PS3 version that was ported from the PS2 port of the GCN original. Also, a reminder they are sitting on a Phantasia localization because nobody liked their awful massively monetized mobile port.

Covid changed alot in terms of development for a multitude of games, so we may or may not get a Phantasia remake that connects more with Symphonia. As much as I would like a Tales of Destiny combo package with its sequel I think those still have to wait for some time. Same for Eternia or even Rebirth and Legendia (the later does need a remake more tho, alongside an Tales of Xillia "Perfect" Edition where the first game gets finished up but I wonder if the "end" of the two WolfTeam type development teams at Bamco means that the franchise will never return because one side was bored enough of the other being to repititve and sharing different priorities in gamedevelopment (hence why Xillia 1 suffered from an unfocused matchup and also Bamco taking off staff from other teams including the Soul Calibur development team to make Tekken Tag Tournament 2)).

I think your giving too much leaway to Bamco here. They could easily get an upscaled Xillia 1 and 2 on modern systems since its the smae engine as Zesteria and Berseria which alread work on PS4. They could do it in a few months. The same goes for a lot of these projects. Also it doesn't have to be the core team. Historically the remakes where done by contracted studios.
The reailty is Bamco could bring us these games (even as emulated verisions) but they activley choose not to. They choose to sit on these games and insted do who knows what with their immense wealth.
I'm am looking at Star Ocean right now who in just 4 years brought us 2 remakes with added content and a brand new game. Menwhile Tales despite being a bigger series didn't even bother to get Symphonia working properly on Switch.

Well Xenoblade might be all on the Switch but poor Xenosaga really could use a release like Hack GU, it should not be TO hard to port the trilogy and put a HD spin on it but they clearly want to bury Saga and Gears and focus on Blade sadly. It all depends on how much effort Namco thinks releasing those old Tales of Games will have, but eager for your Xillia video so best of luck.

Fire Emblem is different because Intelligent Systems releases remakes of their older games to fill out their schedule like Gamefreak does with Pokémon.
Fire Emblem will likely only have 1 remake per system.

  • @HolyAarom
    @HolyAarom 10 місяців тому

4:25 i know fire emblem was mentioned in the context of earlier games in the series not being available on modern systems
with that said, i think fire emblem as a series is one that i draw a lot of parallels with the tales series:
    -anime style
-genre with rpg mechanics (strategy/tactics for fire emblem, action/fighter for tales)
-decent boom during the early 2000s (fe 7 to 11, symphonia to vesperia, included radiant mythology 1 and gba phantasia)
-renaissance period (fe awakening and onwards, graces f to berseria) (i was gonna "rebirth of the series" but that would be too confusing lol)
but where i think these series differ would be by the time zestiria came out. it was mentioned in your "why tales of arise is a bad tales game (in my opinion)," that zestiria removed the lmbs, berseria cemented it being gone. arise to me is a fine game on its own right, but it's not a tales game to me. the series has lost its identity at this point.
compare it to fire emblem again, where the series has always tried something different every few games, yet the core gameplay/skeleton of the gameplay (the grid movement and method of units interacting) has always remained the same. tales was like this throughout its entire series until zestiria, and it's just sad to me to see it progress in this direction. the success of arise sales wise (and the fact it got another dlc as of this post) makes me feel like the series is gonna be this way going forward. it's pretty much like ys or kingdom hearts at this point

I know this is several months late, but I pretty much agree with this entire video especially the part about the ports. I am more a tales fan of the old style then the new style. So yeah i am not very optimistic of where this is going as i believe the reception to tales of arise is quite positive.
I do kinda disagree because at the time of symphonia's release i owned a gamecube so i got to play it and fell in love. Then they switched to the ps2 and i got left out..
Then same thing happened with my 360 and vesperia.
So tales games never where easy to play. If you wanted to play them all you basically needed all consoles.
I do really hope they port more games. My mind would blow if we could get a translated version of rebirth or destiny 2

I don't know why you take so much umbrage to Tales of Arise starting as a new IP...but you don't give the same treatment to Tales of Legendia,Xenoblade Chronicles or Xenogears.
There's many games that start as something completely different like Resident Evil (a remake of Sweet Home),Parasite Eve (Final Fantasy VII),Secret of Mana (Final Fantasy V),Star Fox Adventures (Dinosaur Planet), Tear Ring Saga (a direct sequel to Fire Emblem Mystery of the Emblem),Croc (Yoshi 64)Demintuim The Ward (Silent Hill DS) Silent Hill 4 The Room (a New IP),Super Smash Bros (Dragon King),Final Fantasy IX (Final Fantasy Gaiden),Final Fantasy XI (Final Fantasy Online), Final Fantasy XV (Final Fantasy Versus XIII),Onimusha (Resident Evil 4),Devil May Cry (Resident Evil 4),Haunting Ground (Resident Evil 4) and Assassin's Creed (Prince of Persia Assassin). And that's just a small fraction of games we know.

Honestly it would be nice if it felt like their actually preparing new games in advance but recently I get the feeling Bamco kinda just loiters around with 2 or so years of dead time once they release a Tales game then only after that do they entertain the idea or get stuff started. I’m not saying things have to be as packed as the 2000s but when thinking about how long a game takes to develop you’d think they would do a lot of things in advance or follow some schedule

I blame mobile gaming unfortunately. And now the west doesn't even have them unless you wanna read moonrunes and play Rays and Asteria. And while I absolutely love Rays...It's not the same since it was Bamco's fault for not advertising it properly in the west in the first place, causing it to close down here. And now with how horrible the Symphonia port is looking, having even worse issues than the Steam version, my faith in Bamco with the series is gone.

Tbh the way they released new games up until recently just seems really asinine to begin with. Hearing about the dev histories of all these games in your retrospectives, everytime they made a game available on more than one platform up until like, Berseria seemed like it was an afterthought. This coupled with the sporadic console hopping for each main entry, it's a miracle they've kept such a large following, especially outside Japan. They want the series to grow and reach further, they gotta start with fixing odd business decisions, not gutting the series of what makes it unique and loved

we have two aspects here. one, that the small dedicated fanbase cares more about Tales that the company. Two, the harsh reality of game develpoment these days.
The two things are connected. Tales doesnt sell well enough for namco care more about it. And of course making games is more expensive than ever. With that said Arise somehow sold ok and won rpg of the year despite being not so great.
