The Fastest Mowing Setup?
In this video, I'll take a look at what is perhaps one of the fastest mowing setups: A John Deere Z950M with a Swisher trailmower. With the ability to mow 10 ft. in one pass, combined with the maneuverability of a zero turn, it certainly can get jobs done quickly. I'll also briefly discuss the difference between John Deere green and yellow decks.
This is also the first time I've used drone footage in a video. If you like it, let me know in the comments and I'll be sure to include more in future videos.

Conquering Mother Nature with a John Deere 970
If you tow with your Swisher mower to the left, like you are doing this is actually the correct way the red mower was made to be used because it's got wheels on the left side. If you get up against a building or a fence, it will not get stuck up against a fence/. But if you went with the mower to your right, it would cut up your clippings from your 0 term mower and kick it out to the right side for your next cut/. To mulch the grass better
Better traction tractors.zero turns are a prick to get in and out of/eg arthritic/hip probs.sit on it not in it.
Why didn't you roll it when pushing backwards
x700 series is the most overpriced "garden" machine out there
Daniel Expressway
I am sorry but people mow different ways ,i mow in circles not back an forth like you and i don't mow around trees i mow like n s e w like in a square if you get drift .,but for my yard i rather have a riding mower .
Buy an old f935 front mount and you will have a great mower
Commercial zero turn and you’re done in 5 minutes 😂
Zero baby
Can't imagine having a finish mower that mows a 10' swath. A field would be done in half an hour
Buy the Zero Turn if you have any amount of property over an hours service. You will never turn back.
Thanks for the info 😊
I have a bucket that opens and closes and I've been grabbing, and pull them up, but it's been much harder than i expected to get the bush in the buckets mouth.
A big one on a hot day with a Z Turn is the engine is behind you. Much cooler.
I don’t need that x730 but damn it I want one.
Something happened understand “A jack of all trades is a master of none.” You have to know this when buying lawn equipment.
Kubota for me
I narrow the mow time gap on a tractor by using a circular route. Always keep mowing and disable the reverse switch so you're mowing in reverse. If you want straight lines and stripes then it's a no go on this technique.
Residential mowing......time in seconds has not bearing! I traded in my Farris zero for the X590 and have no regrets. I love the power steering and power lift......very important when you're over 75.
Thanks for helping! I got a lot of info. Just need to pick 1.
The best solution is two machines, a ZT for mowing and a compact tractor for everything else. If you’re only buying one machine the lawn tractor is more versatile.
I’m getting a zero turn
I had a Kioti zero turn and found the absolute biggest con (at least with my yard), the concentrated weight over the drive tires, it’d sink in the ground and easily get stuck. Spring time where I live, it never dries out, and had to get rid of it as a result. Kind of a bummer. The riding mower seems to leave nicer mowing lines, at least compared to my ZT.
Which one is faster in low gear? Also which one goes up hills better in high gear?
In terms of the riding tractor if it has locking rear axle and four wheel steer or if you wanna get crazy, get the model with all that and four-wheel-drive And I wouldn’t buy a zero turn without having at least 10 inch wide rear tires
It’s called popping the hood
I have the roughest yard known to mankind. Not going to fix it ever, not that important to me. Wish they would've talked about comfort, after using my parents kubota commercial mower, I can never go back to an original seat. Can anyone tell me if the tractor mower seats are better? More comfortable ride?
Do you have a link to that collector?
How long did it take you to mow the 8 acres?
What about the x739 aws awd . Or a aws vs a zero turn
That’s a perfect lawn for a robot mower now.
Pretty much a waste of time…sorry. I have a cyclone rig ( Commander) that has it’s own 8hp motor and hitches to my quick hitch and have had it for 20 yrs and two tractors. Besides being much less expensive and easier to mount it holds30 to 40 bushels of leaves/grass. Takes up much less room for winter storage and is American made. Showing one “dump” for doing that huge lawn is disingenuous as well as not demonstrating turning radius ( challenge when doing more intricate lawns), ease or difficulty mounting and dismounting, and not mentioning that you have added front end counter weights ( cost ?). Yes, it’s another motor to take care of but I have just changed the oil and air filter yearly and it starts ( stored inside) on first pull every time. You need to talk about the challenge of reaching in to connect the PTO as well…( one will soon want to buy an expensive “quick” PTO assist unit $$). ck it. out !
or you like to drink a beverage while you mow go with the tractor.. Thats why i never learned to fly a helicopter it took both hands and both feet all the time, you couldn't even smoke a cigarette
Could you make the music louder?
I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

I really didn't know the zeroturns are cheaper?
It really depends on the model. In the case of the tractor and zero turn in this video, the tractor is more expensive. Commercial zero turns will start to get expensive.
Thanks 🙏🏼
Great action filming and content of the Gannon Box. I remember seeing the same form on massive road equipment in the 70's. Now 50 years later having a small tractor and Tarter Box Blade 60" w/scarifiers I find it to be a art to utilize all the different features it's capable of. I have heard 'Gannon Box" or "Rollover Box" used but never could visualize until this video. Thanks, it's almost like a time piece in History. One more term used is the 'Fresno Box'. They all have some interesting History.
I was looking at the new 2023 x590 The new one doesn’t have those levers for hydraulic It has hydraulic but it’s just a single lever Wish it had those levers still
Great video, simple. Thanks
What about maintance? Are the belts any more difficult to change on a zero turn?
The best ever was a 300 and 400 series 40 years and going strong
I pull a 44 inch sweeper behind my Zero turn rz 2454 . i have a john deere 175 lawn tractor too but the zero turn is far superior to pulling that sweeper . it's faster and more manuverable. No comparison .
I put the HDAP tires on the back of my John Deere LA165 and now it pushes the tractor straight when I try to turn. Do I need knobby front tires to stop this?
Guess u have never heard of Honda or Kubota? ..... Honestly a great video though and very well put together and informative.
Have you burned up the transmission yet? How many hours do you have on the J.D. Ztrak with the Swisher Trail Mower attached?
He can pull that or any Wheeled attachment with that JD any day, all day. Get your info straight -
@@georgehofgren6123 Hi George, I have owned a JD 1026 tractor for 8 years, an 855 before that for 10 years, a 585 before that for 10 years, and before that a 455 for 20 years purchased in 1992 and sold to my neighbor in 2012 so it is 31 years old and looks brand new and runs like a deer ( pardon the pun but true). All of course have been diesel engines which are Yanmar's. Deere bought them out and got rid of everything except the diesel engines and I wouldn't buy anything but diesel. I've never had a problem with their diesel engines. I've been pulling TWO Swisher Trail Mowers behind the1026 for 8 years now, but when I bought my JD 24 horse diesel zero turn two years ago and inquired about pulling the Swisher's ( about 300lbs. each), my Deere Rep said the zero turn transmissions are only rated to pull up to 300 lbs. Are you saying my Rep is wrong? I never researched into it but i I was concerned about that and the longevity of the Zero Turn's transmissions when lugging 300 lbs. around every week when I mow my 13 acres. Do you think it's safe.
@vscolkitt That would completely depend on which JD zero turn you bought. Although even if you bought the top of the line (900 series) as this youtuber did, those Swishers are actually 400lbs. So x2 would be 800lbs sustained pulling. You are correct that Tractors are designed to pull. High end Zero turns *can* pull, but they are all designed not to do real pulling Work. The best zero-turns do use separate hydraulic pumps and motors, which is far more robust than L&R transaxles, BUT the stronger pumps just make up for much heavier zero turns they put them on, like Hustler's. Just about your only exception would be a Wide Area Mower (wam), but those are close to $100k- So the answer for your situation unfortunately is No, don't use any zero turn to pull 2 Swishers. I could be wrong... if it's only flat ground And you don't drive the mower for more than an hr... it won't heat up enough to do damage likely. You'd still want to do more frequent trans oil/filter changes.... It might be argued that for the nibleness of just one Swisher and a zero turn, that you still might be faster on a private property (w/obstacles etc) than 2 Swishers w/a tractor. But then again, the Swisher is limited to how fast it will cut... This is where expensive Zero turns end up trumping everything for total grass mowed.... Because some zero-turns can fully mow at 10mph or more, which nothing else can approach. 💁♂️
My JD zero turn is the 920 with 24? - 25? HP Diesel (about the same as my 1026R diesel). My 920 might get away with pulling one Swisher, but I’d never chance pulling two with it and the Swishers don’t cut very well at faster speeds (like the Zero Turns are capable of). My 13 acre field isn’t highway smooth so 5 mph is fast enough without ruining the back or the family jewels!!! The 1025R is perfect at 3mph to 5mph and easy on the spine. I uploaded two videos this week of my set up, one of the tractor and Swishers stationary, … and one while mowing (but I didn’t have an extra body or drone for filming). You can find the videos under “Two Swishers with John Deere” (part one, part two). Instead of using the Swishers pin on tongue, or a ball and hitch sleeve, I cut the sleeves off (from the ball and hitch) and inserted the sleeves into the dual two inch sleeves attached to the tractor’s 3-point hitch. The tongues of the swishers fit well into the cut-off sleeves. Both the inner and outer sleeves and tongues are pinned together using one pin. This set up keeps the Swishers tracking straight, (no swiveling), especially in corners (unlike the ball and hitch). I CAN NOT make sharp turns however, or the Swishers’s rear wheels start skidding so cornering is done like a Zero Turn (using the 3 point turn method), but a bit more backing up is required. Also the Swishers don’t like turning while backing up. Since I have straight mowing lines for 100 yards before turns are required, a little extra backing up is negligible. Takes 2.5-3 hours to mow thirteen acres vs. 5 with the Zero turn (60” decks on all).
My 782 d diesel mower will run 20 mph it goes fast
I bought a 1984 782 d diesel cub cadette and it is a great mower with a 50 inch cutting deck it is a greatower I love it
I have 4 JD zero turns and 2 JD tractors. When u decide to retire it will be it will he tractor that i keep. I also have a large hill in my backyard
