Combining Psychedelics, Spirituality and Functional Medicine: A New Approach to Mental Health Care?
Combining psychedelics, spirituality and functional medicine: A new approach to mental health care?
In this fascinating conversation for the MindHealth360 Show, Pam Conboy and Leah Linder discuss an imminent and radical approach to mental health treatment: psychedelic therapy. When combined with spirituality, community, and functional medicine, this approach can be incredibly powerful for brain restoration, neuroplasticity, and mental healing. Pam Conboy is a biologist and clinical laboratorian who has worked most of her life in medical marketing but has been working in Naturopathic Functional Medicine spheres for the last 7 years, transforming her approach and understanding of medicine.
Leah Linder is a naturopathic physician. Following significant patient interest in the healing power of psychedelics, she was blown away by the wealth of research on the power of psilocybin to successfully address depression, anxiety, PTSD, and many other mental health conditions as a breakthrough therapy endorsed by the 2018/19 US Food and Drug Administration.
Reconnecting a year ago, they discovered how psilocybin can be used legally and therapeutically in the context of a religious entity. Founders of the Setas Seminary Church of Spiritual Integration, the first legitimate non-profit church using psilocybin for therapeutic use under the Religious Freedom Act, their treatments sincerely incorporate elements of naturopathic medicine, holistic spirituality, and psychedelic-assisted therapy. In this groundbreaking interview, they explain the remarkable effects of psilocybin on our biochemistry to reveal why it can not only powerfully and sustainably address mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD when used in an integrative and therapeutic way but can also be truly life-changing for those who use it.
In this episode, learn about:
- How the Religious Freedom Act enables the use of psilocybin within the church setting.
- Ways psilocybin kickstarts the healing process, and why it works significantly more effectively than antidepressants via the 5-HT serotonin receptors.
- How microdosing can help individuals taper off SSRIs.
- Why the therapeutic space is key and the importance of the therapist witnessing/holding in the healing journey.
- How recreational use can go wrong, and why the Church hasn’t seen a 'bad trip.'
- Why the psilocybin used in the Church is safer than SSRI medications, where their psilocybin is sourced, and the rigorous testing involved.
- The three therapeutic psilocybin dosing categories, and the circumstances in which they are applied: 1) micro-dosing 2) moderate dose 3) full dose
- Ways the full dose generates a significant psychedelic experience, why it is taken in ceremony and how it works long-term.
- How psilocybin can create neural pathways/connections, as shown in MRI scans, and how it can vastly increase neuroplasticity and the growth of brain cells quickly - giving sufferers a jump start into better mental health.
- Why whole mushrooms, rather than molecules, are used and ways they are anti-inflammatory.
- Why psilocybin is only one of many tools in the healing toolkit, and why the integration of community, naturopathic medicine, EMDR, light therapy, etc., is also vital, and how the Church facilitates this approach.
- The early research showing that psilocybin can prevent neurodegenerative diseases and stabilize the endocrine system, pointing toward its potential to treat many areas of poor health.
- Some incredible case stories from churchgoers, ways it can unexpectedly bring to the forefront and heal past traumas, and why psilocybin therapy can be life-changing.

Thank you for posting this interview. Great information from Dr Lustig as usual
❤❤❤thank for the information
Dr. Lustig, Dr. Ben Bikman, Dr. Jason Fung provide incredible insight and understanding. I'm reading his book and watching listening videos - a wealth of understanding.
Fantastic video
This is one of his best lectures.

Stalking this guys interviews and talks online. We all know what the “Truth” sounds like!
God communicates to you through your brain also.
So if fructose inhibits these enzymes then wouldn't eating fruit be bad because it would make the liver store fat?
Great video, Robert is wunderfull. A question, the leaky gut is cureable and based on the information in the video, that the blood brain barrier is the same with tight junktions and so on, does this mean the bbb can also be repaired? Anyone knows this?
When he said driven, I immediately thought he was referring to an outside enemy like another country, when all along the threat is within!
Carnivore.
Moore Kimberly Young Ronald Anderson Sharon
I cannot listen to him waffling on the fence.
I think it's all caused by heavy metals caused by industry, and we need to just wind down & off capitalism, which is gonna happen anyway.
Basically eat a meat and veggies diet which is real food
there are way too many ads. I keep being interrupted by ads every 10 minutes
Fibre is not the answer. Its not essential. Fruit is no good. Fructose is fructose no matter how you look at it. Fruit is made by humans to taste sweet, to be disease resistant and will raise triglycerides and uric acid levels plus damage your liver. Those who eat lots of fruit, go check your triglyceride levels, uric acid level and all liver enzyme levels. You will see what i am saying is the truth. Fruit of ancestral times was significantly less sweet. It is not required by humans. Fat and meat is. I like Dr Lustig but he is wrong when it comes to Fruit. Fibre is an irritant and our ancestors ate high fat and meat and ate plants only in lean times or when hunts were unsuccessful. Our gut biome will adjust and colonise with different bacteria which will be very beneficial and feed the gut as he puts it. Many other sources of energy, eg..glutamine, fatty acids and proteins can achieve a very healthy microbiome.
I tried eating dog poo for a while...... Full of shite !!!!
The STARCH SOLUTION
Dr. What food will lower your insulin levels and keep your ketones working.
Stay away from combination of white flour, fat and sugar.
Animal fats are frequently contaminated with LPS (bacterial wall components) which are highly inflammatory (+TNFa, +IL-6 via TLR2, 4 receptors). In one study, the highest amounts were found in: pork, turkey, cheese, ice cream, chocolate, and fast-food burgers. LPS has an affinity for chylomicrons which transport dietary fats from gut into circulation without a leaky gut. Is this correct?
The most important thing is not to be a fat slob.
u are what u eat , keep it frugal keep it simple a mixture of fruits for vitamins , salad & vegetables for minerals , beans & nuts for protein , u will never be fat , u will never loose your teeth , and last not least avoid sugar & bread , sour dough prolongs life .

I liked seeing ifs happen in real time, thank you for the demonstration. I hope I can keep learning about it and start doing it for myself so that I might also experience something amazing.
If your 2 options are keto or vegan, youre better off as a vegan. Not just because you are keeping glucose down, but you're also getting nutrients from the food while also keeping cholesterol under control.
Thanks God, those aren't the only options available.
I'm here for a reason I can't fathom
22:50 is my question also, childhood drama, 3 TBI Adult trauma injuries physical and psychological Documented 117 fractures Didn’t breathe for about 6 mins then for a longer period Given narcon then adrenaline and I rose up from the dead. Been unresponsive about 14 min before. Also have believed I had Lyme for several years.
I’d love to hear how they are using AI to keep up with the massive stream of medical literature.
Lustig show us your belly, you are FAT. Why you might ask too much sugar or too much fat , I think too much fat. Both are bad for you especially in combo but it’s not only the sugar.
Nothing helped me more than Deb's work to overcome traumatic experiences and learn how to work with my nervous System. Thank you so much ❤
What everyone agrees on : Avoid processed foods, seed oils, HFCS, maltodextrin, glyphosate, etc. What confusion exists : Should I be keto? WHPB? Plant based with just pasture raised eggs? The answer is that each person has to do their own testing with a CGM, blood tests, etc. to see what works for THEM, as genetic differences mean different things work for different people (and different ethnicities).
Beautiful conversation! Thank you so much for talking about these essential topics! I've fallen in love with Deb Dana, adore her compassionate nature! 🙏💜
