Triple Aught Design / Watchtower N-1 Deck Coat / History, Heritage, and COOL in One Jacket
EDIT: Hey, ya'll! I read something somewhere and must have confused myself...TAD is certainly based in the US (San Fran) and makes most items in the US. This UK-made jacket is an exception. I'm not sure how I botched that so badly and want to apologize for that!
Thanks for watching! Let me know if you have any questions. If you want to check the jacket out on TAD's website, hit the link below!

Thursday Aviator Wingtip Dress Shoe Unboxing / A Blake Stitched Brogue for Good Value!

Time will tell how these hold up, but they feel great on foot and in the hand upon first impressions. Very light due to using a Blake Stitch instead of a Goodyear Welt. Big improvement from the first gen square toe Aviator. Lemme know if you have any questions. Oh, I decided to keep the Canyon belt, also. Even if the color variation isn't as high as the other belt and the Captain Boots I have, ...

Japanese Loopwheel Tees / A NEW MEDIUM / Another great luxury offering from the new brand!
Very special understated classy watch. Beautifully finished dial and case, and the mechanism is next level. Great choice.
Thank you, John!
So did you go with the L size and how does it fit on you with a 44” chest size?
Down to 42" chest and wear the medium flannel. Fits good. 44" for L would be good I'd say.
Amazing! Did this fit well after all and What is your size in diesel boot? Thanks
Yep! These fit great. Worn them a bunch. Diesel boot size is 10D.
@ glad to hear that! You have good taste in shoes
The Dixies wax jacket patina’s like their advertisement picture
I'll have to look that one up.
I definitely like the stitchless outsoles, given that the threads there are more esthetic than functional. Would they do that for their other boots on request, I wonder?
I bet they would. Get to skip a step and get the boot done quicker!
The way I understand their process, the outsole stitching is the same stitching that holds the whole outsole/midsole/upper stitchdown sandwich together. So it wouldn’t save them a step as they would still need to stitch the midsole and upper together. Which is why that stitch wear on the outsole would always bother me, for the length of the boot’s life which is likely to be many years! It would seem that the screws should be all you need against de-lamination, and they’re well-protected.
I have the JLC Master Hometime and love it. I think you picked the best of the bunch. Wear it in good health.
Nice, clean video and to the point. I absolutely love my Relwen Windzip. I have some relwen shorts, long sleeve knits and now two windzips. I always get compements on the jackets.
Fantastic collection. Love the mark I explorer. The white gold markers are stunning, I much prefer it.
Thank you! I'm still loving it to this day!
You sir has lost the CXL lottery.
You aren't wrong! But yeah - also having them 1/2 size big didn't help I think.
All that money on jackets for most of them to be trash
Good thing I have a high IQ, good skills, a hot wife, and make a lot of money, then. I mean - I gotta make up for bad taste in jackets somehow! Bless you, brother.
Thanks for your comments on the colour and your thoughts on it, and for showing off the patina with this 2 year update. Did the youtube things
The two-stitch issue doesn't bother me. If anything, if it starts to come apart, that can be repaired. I see what you mean about the D-ring issue. Yeah, that's a bit annoying and should be corrected, as there isn't any reason for that to be there. However, that isn't a dealbreaker considering everything else.
Yup! I'm in full agreement. Thanks for the comment!
Gustin non-jean pants didn’t workout for me, even after reading about their sizing issues, I ordered a full size up from my normal size and it was STILL too-small. Also, the quality was marginal, the material thin.
Thanks for sharing! Lots of mixed reviews for sure.
The N-1 came out in the early 1940's and other renditions followed. While this coat is nice looking, it's not faithful to the original design. The overlay pockets, lining and buttons come to mind first. My biggest issue with the jacket is the chemical, PFAS mentioned on the Triple Aught Design website. That's a real deal killer for me, forcing a hard pass.
I have an old Timex’s watch for kids that is all digital. Can’t find any info about this specific model. The hour is shown digitally but in analog clock-hand way and when moving the wrist the indicators animate (it also makes a sound as having a little ball inside the watch). It has a button for indiglo and another for animation. The model seems to be TI78361. Do you know anything about it?
Sorry, I do not.
Dude your posterior is tremendous! Congrats
Ha! I'll take it.
Trying to decide between AZ Adobe, Tobacco, Canyon. They all look great, just depends on what you have to wear with them. That canyon does look a little too dark, even if does eventually patina. When I wear brown, I like it to look noticeably brown. Anyone with experience on how the AZ Adobe or Tobacco ages? Anyway, nice video. The misstitch on the sole would have really bothered me.
Thx man. Totally agree on your comment about the color and shading. That's the reason I like the Canyon! Less brown. I think I like AA in the pics on the website better, but the one time I saw it in person it was quite lighter.
That thing is sweet ❤
It fits a certain niche, we'll say!
I have the same navy colored jacket, from triple aught design....it's much darker blue like advertised .....yours looks a lot lighter. Im 5.9, 140 with a 29 inch waist...I went will a small, which is my normal size.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah - it's darker than it looks in the direct sunlight, but to me, still lighter than it looks on the website. Thankfully, blue is one of those colors that isn't made or broken by it's exact shade! Cheers, mate!
I just received a pair of Thursday Diplomats and they were my first boots from them, so I had no frame of reference on sizing and decided to go with their recommendation of a half size down. I wear a size 9.5 in most sneakers like Nikes, Vans etc. I went with 9s in the Diplomats and they are reallyyyy tight and on the verge of being somewhat uncomfortable. That said, I don't know if I should exchange them for a 9 Wide or a 9.5. I have somewhat wide-ish and flat feet and the standard 9s make my pinky toe feel like it's kind of pushed up against the side. Also, my toes in general just have no wiggle room and the top part of the toe box feels like it's pressing into my toe knuckles, if that makes sense. Did you experience any of those symptoms before you exchanged your Diplomats and do you think I should exchange for a 9 Wide or 9.5? Thanks!
Hey man! Yeah I feel you for sure. When I exchanged I didn't have a wide version to consider. I'd bet both would be OK. Usually a wide size adds length also so I'd guess they will both be similar, but either would likely work. If I was you I'd try the 9.5 if you only need a little more width and the Wide of you need a lot more width, but that's just my educated guess!
Mine are looking great! Had them for over 3 years now. ❤
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
I have a pair on the way. I needed some decent casual shoes. I'm not always inclined to lace up boots several times a day. After my brain tumor, aneurism and stroke it takes more energy and coordination to lace up than normal.
I hope they serve you well!
Can you hear the rotor bearings when your move your wrist? like a "whizz".
Yep. Slightly annoying but I've accepted it. "Ceramic Bearings" is the explanation I've seen for the sound.
Love thier flannels
I bought the Canyon Captain boots, but when I opened the box I was very surprised by the appearance as they did not look like the Canyon photos. The Canyon photos appeared as though the leather was a bit distressed and maybe even a little oily. The boots I received appear high quality dark brown and I like them, but definitely not what I was expecting. Anyone else have a similar experience?!
I had this experience on my Canyon belt I just got like 6-7 weeks ago. I left my old one at a hotel I think, so I bought a new one. Exactly as you described. They 100% changed the way Canyon leather was made, or maybe just had a batch that should have been rejected but they used it anyways. Who knows. I do like it, as you said, but doesn't exactly match my boots.
@ Exactly - I have heard great things about their customer service, but all they gave me was BS and it took too long to get that - I hate when you cannot call and have to write back and forth, but that’s how it is these days. I treated my boots with Honey Leather then NikWax - going to try them again today. Look great, even though nothing like advertised, but feet were sore yesterday. I usually put cheap insoles in for more cushion like Dr. Scholls, but they seemed to elevate my heels too much in these Canyons. Great video, btw!!
Thanks for the review! Just pulled the trigger on the chocolate. I almost went with another color because the picture on the website was a bit too warm and earth-toned for my liking, but after seeing yours in this video, I changed my mind. The gray undertone looks perfect. Hoping mine ends up looking more like yours and less like the picture on the Huckberry site.
Good choice! Please let me know what you think when it comes in. And fingers crossed the color ends up being to your liking!
@rockymtnstyle Update: just received today and the color and fit are perfect! The color is a match with your video and is just what I was hoping for. The fit exceeded my expectations as well. I bought an XS and it’s darn near perfect. For reference, I’m 5’4”, 142 lbs, 36” chest. I can tell this jacket is going into heavy rotation. Thanks again for the review!
I have a similar shoe sizing issues as you. Pls what is your foot length. Mine is 11inches and i wear a size 10.5 in blundstone boots. I want to order the Thursday wingtip boots in chocolate brown suede but not sure if to go with zise 10 or 10.5 . Pls What would be your recommendation for me in a Thursday boots. Thanks
Hi! Just under 10.5 inches. Sorry for tire slow reply!
@@rockymtnstyle okay thanks for the reply. It will go a long way.
Good video here. Pls if you wear a size 10 in Thursday what is the length of your foot in inches. I wear a 10.5 in blundstone boots and I have a foot length of 280mm or 11inches. I need this information to help me make an informed buying decision as I live in Europe. Thank you
Hi, sorry for the slow reply. I measured today. From my heel to my toe is just under 10.5 inches for both feet. Hope that helps.
great video! I'm thinking of picking up the jacket and this was really helpful. appreciate the fit checks as well. I am a bit bothered by the fact that the sleeves are as long as they are though :( I'm a shorter guy and think the small will have sleeves that are longer than ideal... do you have a recommendation for a similar jacket that may be designed for shorter men? Thank you!
Thanks! Unfortunately, not on anything similar to these. I did buy a topcoat/overcoat from Peter Manning (needed a 4X) however and wear it all the time on dates and to the office. Start there I guess!
thank you sir! how tall are you, and what size is that which you are wearing? I am considering buying this jacket :) How does it compare in warmth to the Patagonia Down jacket if you have worn that before? Thank you again!
Im 5'8.5" tall. Probably about 185-190 lbs in this video. Wearing the Medium. I haven't ever had a Patagonia down jacket, sorry!
Do you think a large would be too big? Can you still fit a hoodie under the medium?
Thin hoodie, yes. I think the sleeves on the large would be too long for my liking but the chest and shoulders probably would have been just fine.
Great video. Just ordered one for delivery to the uk. Can I ask what shirt you are wearing?
Thanks! While I'm filming? I think that is a basic v-neck tee, and the light jacket I have over it is a chore coat from The Normal Brand in a fabric they call "comfort terry."
All their non jean stuff is too small for me. I have a 49" chest. oh well. For made in the USA stuff, I've had good luck with Gettees (midweight) and Camber (heavyweight). Goodwear is sorta small too, but some of their stuff is big enough for me, they make their own fabric in house, their heavyweight stuff are tanks. I heard that Bayside owns a lot of the former made in usa manufacturing formerly run by American Apparel after they went under. Jeans, I'm old and I like stretch, I buy locally here from Dearborn Denim in Chicago.
Exactly my experience, I sized-up and still got burned on the pants.
Have both and my favorite boot in the entire collection is Redwing 1907... I have a couple of Thorogoods, they are great for work. Redwing berly edges them out for me.
1907 is king!
@rockymtnstyle i would have to agree with you. Wearing them as I write this lol.
Dammit Patrick, you sold me another jacket. I got the black one because I'm hoping to get away with using it in that grey area between casual and formal like a peacoat. I'm about the same size and weight as you, and I do wonder if I should have sized up from the medium to a large because it's fairly slim fitting, especially if you have a hoodie or thick sweater underneath. Merry Christmas season and happy New Year to you.
Hah! Hope it serves you well my friend.
Would u recommend captain vanguard or president boots for daily work, walking each day
Honestly, Captain. Their sole will all wear out at a similar pace so no need to buy the extra upper leather of the Vanguard unless you need ankle protection or something.
I’m trying to sell my old pair off. These are my worst red wing purchase. Got about 5 heritage and 3 work boots. This is my least worn/liked pair
Oof, sorry to hear that!
I’m basically exactly the same size as you in brannock. When I went to the red wing store to try some on a couple months back, they scanned me and told me I was a 9. I couldn’t even get the laces up to the speed hooks. And even then they said it looked too big on me and made me try a 8.5. I’ll have to go back and try a 10 next time. How have yours broken in since then?
Yeah. I feel you on that. I've heard so many bad stories from the store. On my 1907s they wanted me in a 9.5 which was almost impossible to get on. If in being honest, these havant got as comfy for me yet as everyone said they would. But I'm only maybe 50 wears in...wearing other stuff for reviews and more in the office lately has made it so I can't wear these as often
I love how you always introduce us to unfamiliar brands. I’d also recommend a New Zealand brand called Alchemy Equipment, especially their Wool Cotton Workshirt.
Indeed! I'll go check them out. Thanks!
My friend Triple Aught Design is a great company but they are not out of the UK they are out of San Francisco Ca. They use some fabrics out of the UK .
Yup! I read something that must have confused me right before filming this. Added a note in the description about my error. Thanks!
@@rockymtnstyle great video as always Patrick. TAD is my favorite company tied with Ironheart I have tons of products from both and what’s special about TAD and Iron Heart they have products that after they produce a certain amount the product is either never available again or it’s discontinued . Recently Triple Aught Design put out the N1 they were supposed to release it a while back but didn’t .. but they just put out the Sentinel Jacket again which is a great jacket they hadn’t had the sentinel in a while . The sentinel can be used as a casual everyday jacket or as a dressed up overcoat it’s super versatile in that way .. but Now that your hands on a product from Triple Aught Design you won’t be able to stop .. Lol 😂 I remember a while back when I referred you to them for a review and you weren’t familiar and you said you would check them out .. but thanks for getting a review in I appreciate that !
Thanks for another great video. It inspired me to finally pull the trigger, and mine arrived today. Couple things I'll add... MSRP is $395, but it's on sale and there's an additional first time customer discount, so I got it for $268. The Bedford cord is awesome. It's not rough at all, but it does have that sort of dusty look that corduroy has. It's a lot lighter in weight than it looks. I think they put more heft in the body and less in the arms. The shape is a little weird. The shoulders, armpits, and biceps are a little big, but the waist and length are a little small. So it probably fits best on shorter, thicker guys. Also, since the torso is short, the pockets sit a little too high. The whole thing feels like it needs to be broken in. It's soft enough, but right now it's boxy and doesn't want to relax. All in all, I think it's a good jacket with a lot of cool features. I don't think it's worth $400, but I think it's a bargain at $268.
Thanks for sharing! Yes - $268 seems great. I bet you're right about the shorter/thicker comment. I consider myself in that camp so it makes sense that I like the fit. ;) Cheers, mate! Hope it breaks in for you.
Sleeves are always too long and makes for a sloppy look. I wish companies would offer short instead of just monkey length.
Would you say it’s a good match for Anejo boots? i.e. Old English jacket and Anejo boots?
I haven't seen the boots in person, but if they are similar to the bag then yes - I think the match is a good one and would be a smart look. Cheers, mate!
IH makes great flannels. But I also love The Flat Head and Studio D’Artisan, they also make great shirts. I also have a sugar cane flannel but the quality isn’t on par with the others. If you have the means they are totally worth it.
Thanks for the data! I'll probably branch into other Japanese brands this upcoming fall season. I'll make sure to steer clear of Sugar Cane for now.
really nice jacket , fits you perfect
Thx!
Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it. Merry Christmas!
You are welcome. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year since I'm replying on the 26th!
I own a few gustin pieces and you are spot on with pretty much everything. The xxl workshirts are way too snug for my liking and so are the 40 waist straight fits. I have the black rainbow neps selvedge, and the Herringbone selvedge jeans. They have since stretched out but I'm afraid they will be more susceptible to blowouts/fraying due to the stress on the fabric. They do offer unique fabrics and patterns which are appealing. Just which they were a little more generous in sizing.
This is the way! Thanks for the comment, and good luck w/ avoiding the blowouts!
I am in the same boat. I don't have anything from Gustin yet, but I am currently a 40 waist in vanity sizing, so i feel like I would need a 42 in Gustin. Same with the shirts. I hope they expand their sizing.
