Waves SSL EV2 Shootout with bx SSL E and CLA Mixhub
I've tried many DAWs and recently downloaded Cubase. I started using it last week and haven't encountered any issues with MIDI or audio all the function it's pretty much the same as the others. but the sound quality is excellent, and the drivers have not caused me any problems. I love Cubase. Good video.
This changed the game for me. I still love my SSL style mastering, but this takes me back to some of the best 90s vinyl records. The side chain is a wee bit confusing, though. What they need to do is add a visual display like they have with their other comp.
How cool to be able to remaster Chet Baker
It was a privilege to work on those albums and really enjoyable!
@@heronislandstudio8054 That's awesome 🤘💀🍻🔥
I would say the p455 is getting somewhere - its getting closer to analog - is it analog ? no - but .... give it a couple of years , a better computer and threre maybe some good SSLs and Neves - meanwile the kiive Nfuse is the best
kiive NFuse ( the neve bus ) - is 10 times better than this one ... Nfuse is the best
Is this song released? Name? What beautiful is it 🔥🎵💕
Amateur hobbyist mixer watching and your discussion on compression is great. However, a little more basic compressor would have been helpful. You’re moving around on 2-3 knobs on some of the samples is confusing. Release fast, slow, delay and no dB levels to see on the knobs as you turn is confusing. The display is somewhat helpful but don’t want to rely on it to see what’s going on. The instruction is great but I’m lost as to what you’re doing on such a complex unit.
IMHO, version 13 discourages desire using Cubase. The “Channel” innovation brings even more confusion (It’s like a separate channel from MixConsole, the same thing is with MediaBay), since the Inspector expand section exclusively (now it's optionally) and there is also a Channel Settings window... And in the “new” Channel I did not find the opportunity to make a channel strip as a pre-insert, you can only move it around. And also in the Channel Strip I did not see two new compressors: VoxComp (apparently an alternative to RVox from Waves) and BlackValve. In general, Cubase suffers from duplication of windows. Studio One, in my opinion, will be better.
API is the best kick and snare drum EQ, period!
Very nice. I like Kazrogs Avalon 747 plugin a lot, also...
Thanks for this, Mark!
I’m a bit late to the party. Just got the Sonsig Rev-A on a special offer and found this video. I always appreciate your content and the way you demonstrate the sound quality of the plugins you review. Great work! BTW, who is the singer? She has such a beautiful voice! Regards!
THIS IS NICE ADVICE
One of the best sounding plugins out there right now. Hats off to Pulsar.
Generally love your videos and the calm and analytical approach, but here you've unfortunately fallen victim to a clever psychological trick. The trick is basically monetization of what's called the expectation bias. There are studies that show increased brain activity in the brain regions that are associated with pleasure when tasting a wine that is said to be expensive. The same wine will trigger less pleasure in the brain when the person tasting is told that's it's a cheap or a mid-priced wine. So your brain will hear what it seeks to hear, and the expectations that you bring with you will very concretely change your experience. A very simple way to bust this FiDef "Magic Sauce" would be to perform a blindfold A/B -test (Hofa makes a plugin that's great for this) and see if anyone can hear any difference when the expectation bias is taken out of the equation.
You could be right of course. And I haven't done a blind test, which would be interesting to try. What makes me think it might not be expectation bias is that I think FiDef sometimes makes things sound worse rather than better, sometimes I can't hear a difference and other times it definitely sounds better to my ears. It really depends on the music. If I always thought it sounded better that would be one thing. But since I don't, it makes me think it's not expectation bias. But without doing a blind test of course I can't be sure.
I'd be interested to hear what you thought about the voosteq model N.
If this is stereo delay how do I get left to out put 1/8 dotted and right channel to output 1/4 triplet?
In my daw, reaper, I can select what channels (left or right) go in and out of the delay. You can duplicate the plugin and have one process right and one process left. Or you can make two sends and pan one left and pan one right.
Thanks
i used logic, protools, and now use Cubase, and never looked back !
That "velvety" horn effect was observable (more like felt), indeed.
Perfect for your musical examples. I´m glad you dig P455 Sidecar. Enjoy. 🙂
If people want an analog sound why not just use analog hardware instead of all these fake digital analog plugins and don’t use computers
Because some of us don't have the room for it, or can afford it, or want the hassle of maintaining it, and that's even if the hardware is still available. So why not? 😎
Thanks for making this available!
Holy shot i came across it again recently
It does not matter if you use like 6 or 7 plugins on a particular track, if you just want to use the filters of a ssl strip but then the 10k band of a neve to add more top end why not, there is nothing wrong with that. That is not what those mixer mean when they say if you use more than 3 plugins then you are probably doing it wrong...they often mean when you put it on the master or mix bus then it is too much. mixing into a compressor or desk plugin is a good thing the sound will be a part of the mix. However, as you try to explain, you put like loads of plugins on a track, but that is not the important thing when mixing, what is is that you solve problems, when you hear things or not you have to get rid of it or add a bit to make the track sit well in the mix. What i have learned from the old timers is that you do it most effeciently possible. Use as less as possile plugins on a track to make it sound good, and learn this way what the track need or does not need and you will grow as a mixer.
No it's not. Actually, Fab C2 in the same situation and same basic settings are much better sounding plugin
I used Protools for years, it’s slow and buggy. Moved to logic, even more buggy. Hopefully Cubase is the one. There’s a recent video, the guy tests all the new m chip macs on various daws. Only Cubase and Reaper used all cores which allowed for a much higher track count. That’s my main reason for switching. That and less bugs, hopefully 🤞
I can't believe I didn't think of using a transient shaper... THANK YOU!! Huge difference.
I might have to get this when they do their discount. Btw your voice over audio sounds a bit weird in this specific video. Much enjoyed the music again though
Does elevate not have stereo separation between channels? If not, do you miss that option?
Mark, how do you compare this to Michelangelo in terms of “analog magic”?
I think Michelangelo is also extremely good, I did a review on this channel. It sounds really different from the 455. I think these two plugins are the best example I've heard of what really great analog gear can bring. Acustica also has some which sound great in this way, but they are not as versatile and the modules don't seem to interact that way that the 455 or Michelangelo do.
Not at all impressed. Firstly, the signal mutes when inserting the EQ? That alone is a deal-breaker, totally unnecessary. I’m trying hard to mention one positive impression I get from this. Sorry, but I can’t. Further, I don’t need every last thing explained to me in five different ways. I want only to hear, not to be sold.
Why even watch a video that you can see is 55 minutes long if you’re not wanting in depth walkthrough?
@@dyrossmusic Typical dumbass UA-cam reply. Just pull crap out of your ass with no comprehension at all of someone’s clearly explained antipathy. What a waste of oxygen.
Ya because heaven forbid you can't make a default preset and set that as your new default.. lol it's not rocket science and compared to actually running a real api setup one click isn't gonna kill ya 😂
We made P455 zero latency. However, this is not the case when you engage the EQ which needs to oversample, as such, it needs to reset the data buffer for latency compensation. Each DAW deals with this differently. Some, you can hear a faint click others like Cubase mutes the signal. HOWEVER, you can use the modifier key to turn off/on the bands to preview without getting the click or mute effect.
@@pulsarmodular5044 Thanks for explaining. That would be meaningful for me.
Did you make the Oz soundtrack?
ALL the Pulsar Modular plugins are spectacular. Expensive, yes, fairly CPU intensive, yes, but the sound… the sound…
Thank you for this video. What other plugins do think are in the same realm as the p455?
Michelangelo, imho.
This plugin will hit an i7 16 core cpu at 10% per instance. It won't be going across a big project unless you print the tracks.. Sounds really good but at a major cpu cost.
It's not as CPU heavy as Acustica plugins but yes it does require some CPU for this level of emulation. I'm not noticing much of a hit on a Apple M1, but yes worth being aware of this if you don't have a super fast processor.
I'm at 3% with all modules on .. AMD ryzeen 5900 x .. 32 gig ram
not supposed to go "Across a big project" - it goes on the Mix bus.
2-3% maximum on my 9900k, didn't even notice.
Hi - what band is this?
That's my band 🙂
You folks sound great - do you have a soundcloud or bandcamp page? Please let me know.
@@heronislandstudio8054 Cool stuff!
The sound quality is excellent, so good, I could almost overlook the huge flaws in the UI. When snare’s attack is varied from 1mS to 30 mS and not an iota of difference results on the display, I’d prefer no display. Very odd little plug-in with weird display flaws and wildly inconsistent correlation to the hardware I know so well. Not for me.
Input gain does nothing?? Many compressors are set entirely by adjustment of input gain. That’s a major oversight.
Thanks Mark for your music and your Heron Island UA-cam channel! I really enjoy your guitar style, and I guess a big influence is Allan Holdsworth, right? You have your own unique sound of course, but I can hear the great Allen Holdsworth shines through from time to time. He joined the same label as you, when he was in his latter years of his career. He released his last music with “Soft Works”. “Abracadabra in Osaka” is an outstanding album, thank you for the fantastic remastered version! 🙏🏻
Thanks @thorstenweimar1190 it's appreciated! Yes Allan is an influence, also Metheny, Rypdal, and Hendrix. Possibly even more influence from sax, horn players and vocalists! Yes Abracadabra in Osaka was fun to work on. Cheers!
@@heronislandstudio8054Thanks for your explanation 🙏🏻
Great, now how do you fix the piano tuning 😂?
Excellent video comparison. I’m two days in on my trial of Cubase 13 pro, the drum editor mode is a huge difference, also being able to enter piano roll notes without holding command I like seamlessly with out switching to a tool. I was feeling to lazy to learn another day after like 5, thought logic was my perfect daw but for $250 with there current promotion you might have sold me on it to invest in it and accept the learning curve lol
25:10 Isn't "Relative" affecting only the bell at 1.4kHz?
Nice comparison. I would like to hear about the differences wrt notation as well. Thank you for making this video!
Thanks. Logic's Score in my opinion is a bug ridden nightmare. I have scored many things using it and it's always been problematic. From it forgetting the layout after reopening the file to stupid things like combining two different notes a semi-tone apart that occurs at the same point in time into a singe note head with both an accidental and a natural sign next to them. No classical musician I've ever worked with (which is a good number) had any idea how to read that (so they all have to be found and then separated one at a time by hand!). Tupplets are a nightmare too, there's no easy way to get them to display correctly. Cubase's Score is a lot better in my opinion.
Cubase and Reaper are the most optimized DAWs for Apple Silicon Logic you ask? Not even close Weird but true
I originally came from Studio One Professional to Logic. The one thing I fell in love with Studio One for was their advanced hand mastering processes. Since then, upgrading my VSTs, ozone has made that part of S1 moot which is what made me move to logic. But unfortunately now running up to 50-80 tracks at 44Khz I’m getting a ton of overload issues on a newer Mac. It’s cheaper for me to upgrade to Cubase (I have a 64gb ram and 13th gen intel laptop with a 3080TI) which having Cubase be cross compatible removes that roof when we hit that ceiling when we are tracking.
Hi there great video. Does the Kirchhoff do frequency unmasking?
Tube Tech for the Win 😂❤
This type of comparison is what makes the most sense to me, not the "what do they sound with the same settings" type of comparison, although an interesting experiment, there's no real world application for that. Rather knowing what they sound like when trying to make the original material as good as possible, and what different results you get from that, that's a way more useful comparison :)
Watching this a year later after I haphazardly updated to Sonoma 17.4 and all my Ilok plugins like UA and Soundtoys cause errors in Logic Pro and won’t open on my newish 2023 M2 Pro Mac mini. There’s a workaround through Rosetta but unacceptable. I switched back to my Studio one Professional which continues to work flawlessly during this time
What a nightmare! Its a real shame with all their vast resources that Apple have decided not to care about backwards compatibility. Its not fair on the users or the developers.
@@heronislandstudio8054 completely agree. Even “funnier”….apple came out today with a “fix” for this very issue and it still doesn’t work. Your content is super helpful thanks!
My MacBook crashes now as often as Windows 95 used to. And my PC is very stable. One Soma update even bricked my MacBook... I hate Apple now.
