You need to get a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tape and play "Almost Cut My Hair" while driving around in the Opel. 👍

Funny, I've been thinking about that song a lot lately :D

It's one of those things that seems like a luxury purchase for a driveway DIYer, but man it's so nice. Worth it!

    Cup to hold the juice!
I so needed this upgrade trans. back when Manta was my only car '84 to '88.
    Thanks for the assist Tyler!
Stereo with large square buttons also reminds me of the early days - cassette back then of course!
Have two builds going here, one '74 Luxus getting Rover 4.6 with narrow 700-4r (from V6 Camaro)
and one '75 Ascona wagon with orig. A/C getting Buick 215 and BW 5 speed from S-10. The wagon gets a Manta nose grafted on for a match up.

I like the "Manta wagon" idea! Best of both worlds. And yes the 5-speed is great, I've taken the car on a couple of long road trips and it's been excellent for that.

As a former Opel mechanic i worked on those cars in the 70's and early 80's . There was a modifaction with the pressureplate for this gearbox . You had to place a plastic ring on it , so it reduced the noise from the pressure bearing

Interesting! The Getrag 240 is pretty noisy, it sounds like a box of gravel sometimes. But apparently that's normal! I did some googling and it appears to be just how it is.

Thanks! I agree, it's much nicer to drive with the 5-speed.

I gotta say, it was cool to hear an American say "bollocks!" 😆

Wish I'd seem your video 6 months ago. On the Manta A & Kadett B cars I remove the clutch cover to flywheel bolts, when dropping the Getrag. That way the pressure plate and disk come out with the Getrag by only pulling the transmission back past the flywheel. It sounds silly at first, but it works very well. You remove (and install) the bolts through the passenger side bell housing rubber plug.

Interesting! Definitely wouldn't have thought of that. Getting it out was a struggle, but it gave me the access I needed to change those seals and the bearing.

Those shift selector seals are a pain. I'm lazy and I usually just end up putting the new seal right on top of the old one (and prey nobody did that before me). It almost looks like you could throw a Getrag 265 in the manta.

Hello, I am in France and I would like to fit a 240 gearbox in my opel manta A GTE, I would not have too much difficulty buying the gearbox, however it seems that the transmission shaft needs to be shortened, the did you do?

Hi! Correct, the driveshaft (also known as prop shaft) does need to be shortened, and you also need the yoke from an Automatic car, as the splines on the Getrag output shaft are different from the old 4-speed. Or maybe the yoke from a 5-speed Manta B would work, I'm not positive if the driveshaft size is the same or not.

How thick is the piece of metal you used to fasten the gearbox to the traverse?? And what is the size of the metal piece?

It’s pretty thick! I’ll try to remember to measure it the next time I’m under there.

Wonder if I can use this video for replacing a Getrag 240 on an Opel GT 2,2L

Some of it may be relevant! Not sure. In my case when I went from the old 4 speed to this Getrag 240, I had to have the driveshaft shortened and use a different yoke from an automatic transmission Manta. And of course the mount is different / custom.

On a 68-73 GT, dropping the Getrag, is much easier as you have much more room.
