I love Clevelands and 385 engines! Loved the video.
@@darrellseike3185 the 385 series is my most favorite Ford engine. Thank you for your kind words!
Nice think I will try this with one of my spare motors. Try it in my Ranchero.
It really helps with the exhaust side of the 429/460. Especially if you are running headers or the truck manifolds. The car manifolds are horrible.
That is one clean engine inside, I expected your voice to get a little higher after nailing your boys lol, great video sir 👍😁
@@davestewart9146 that’s why I had to cut the recording right there and walk away lol
Looking forward to how you build this. Good info on the single front leg engine stand. Always learn something new. Thanks!
@@MaxDeet7439 yeah those single wheel engine stands are dangerous. They shouldn’t even be allowed to sell them. Thank you for your kind words!
I will be tearing down my 86 460 this week myself. No clue on mileage either. Look forward to seeing how you build your engine
@@ThomasKinkead well there will be two 460 builds. This one will be for towing and going into my 1979 F-350. The other one will be a little more high performance and will be going into my 1978 F-150 4x4.
I am wanting to put a 460 in my 95 mustang gt. was curious if you had a Instagram or a way to reach out to you to get some pointers ? I really like RPM. so was wanting to do a budget RPM build on 91 ( AZ ) pump gas. not looking for peak hp numbers etc and this car is just a canyon carver / hoon car. was considering doing a 460 with a 429 crank and a cam with ported stock heads with upgraded springs and maybe a carb ? would it hold 7,000-7,500 on that setup ?
@@theregoesmiller389 if I was going to turn one 7,000-7,500 regularly I would invest in aftermarket rods. But unless you invest in aluminum heads and stuff you won’t like an iron headed 429/460 for a canyon carver car. They are too heavy and the car won’t handle good in corners. Now if you was going in a straight line like drag racing that’s a different story. But I have several 460 engines and a 1989 Mustang GT. Am I putting a 460 in it? Nope…a 351 Windsor is going in the car.
Man that thing looks good inside. I wish I could get that lucky with used engines lol. Send that cam and lifters to Oregon cam grinding, they'll come back better than new, and they can take that stock cam and make a nice RV grind out of it.

I was just about to do this same thing last week with my second hand Pilot 3HP compressor and a Vevor motor idenitcal to yours , until I realized that the problem on my old one was in the power feed - was missing a leg of 240. I was planning to run a smaller pulley on the motor to compensate for the 1/3 drop in power. Did you change the pulley out or is it actually running OK with the same drive ratio?
@@sumdumhick mine has no problems running a 3” or 3 1/2” pulley on the motor.
I worry about rebuilt parts using crappy cheap seals, bearings and bad parts. Some factory options will list a heavy duty water pump, like the old big block mopars.
@@paintnamer6403 when I worked at Oreillys I can remember pulling rebuilt water pumps out of the box and the bearings did not feel good in them. There’s no way they could have lasted too long. Ford didn’t have much in the way of high performance water pumps except for like the Boss 302 pump and a few others. Their heavy duty and industrial engine water pumps were usually way different than the passenger car stuff and wouldn’t interchange.
Didn’t even show how you got it on the bell housing?
I bought in Puerto Vallarta Mexico a beautiful 4 cyl BMW with a bad head gasket, I took it to a mechanic shop and the mechanic put silicone on both sides of the burnec gasket , he let it dry and carefully trimmed the excess on the orifices for oil and water, I drive it to California and used it for years with the rigged gasket. 🙏

As reliable and as strong as the 460 was, makes me wonder why Ford developed the Godzilla. I haven't heard of stellar reliabiliy of the Godzilla
I haven't heard anything about it's reliability either. I know the Triton V10 replaced the 460 and it was not a good replacement. Everyone I know that got one of the V10's told me the 460 would pull more but fuel mileage was about the same between them.

Browsing through old videos of cams online and yeah, Comp and Lunati have dropped a ton of cams off the shelves lately. Unless Lunati is reworking their website there weren't any Ford FE cams at all on there. I wound up with a leftover Comp 255DEH I bought off Amazon for $114 I put in my new 351W and I like it better than the XE250H in the old engine. It no longer makes a thrashing noise but the Comp high energy aluminum rocker arms sure make plenty of noise, but the cam/lifters themselves are quiet. I had that old XE250H reground into a Oregon #182 grind. 266 286 @.006, .206 .220 @.050 on 110 LSA lift is .443 .448" if I remember right. That should fix the noise considering it's an OEM Ford grind other than the 110 LSA LOL
The old DEH cams worked good. They were quiet and made good power. That's why it surprised me when Comp discontinued them.
@BlackLabGarage Yeah power and mpg is the same as the xe250h and it has better idle manners in the cold weather as well. I wish I had picked it back in 2013 now that I've run it.
Thank you for the great videos! Yours are the easiest to understand? Question: What P/N brand composite head gasket did you use? Thickness?
@@tom87112 well the problem with that was I used some ROL head gaskets that I had. They measured around .040 best I can remember. But ROL is long out of business. If I was to get a commonly available head gasket it would be a Victor Reinz HG10034 and they measure right at .040” thick. Actually I have a set of the Victors stashed back for the next FE I build. The standard Fel Pro Permatorque gasket would be my dead last pick for a head gasket.

We like our time machines, yep. But man, will say new tech gives us twice the perf with the same bump in mileage.
@@grandcrappy I agree it does but sometimes the cost of swapping the engine, transmission, modifying the cab and linkages, and everything else makes it not worth it and not budget friendly to me. I don’t know many newer engines that could end up getting 300hp and 13mpg in a 1974 F-350 flatbed dually loaded! Besides these newer engines don’t have that musical sound of the older engines!
Yeah but they're generally pretty boring, or at least to me. Prefer the time machine.
Looks like a great way to preserve aluminum trim after the anodizing is stripped off and its polished. How much you wanna bet it'll look better for longer than the anodizing does? I painted my 390 with Rustoleum semi gloss black out of a can and I brush painted it, it's held up really well other than by the exhaust manifold flanges.
@@MattsRageFitGarage I don’t know how long the anodizing looked good for? By the time I was old enough to remember the trucks, the anodizing had already dulled on them lol
@@BlackLabGarage Seems like about 10 years of being outside was enough to ruin it.

Great video! I've done this starter swap several times and it works great. I've had good luck with the DB Electrical starter #SFD0030 Starter for big blocks with automatics for $70.93. The small block number is 410-14023 for automatics at $67.01. New not rebuilt, and no core needed. Both commonly found on Amazon. I have one on a 400 with a Mutha Thumper cam and this starter worked great.
I'll have to remember that. I have bought from DB Electrical before to get parts to fix starters but I haven't ever bought a new starter from them. I'll have to try them out.
I bought a 1974 F250 with a 360fe. The valve cover gaskets leaked a lot. I took off the valve covers and the intake gaskets were sticking up about 1/8" causing the valve cover leaks. I carefully ground then down with a dremel tool, replaced the gaskets and that solved that problem. Next up is the pesky intake manifold leak. That one I'll fix over the winter.
I guarantee it was leaking badly if they didn't trim the intake gaskets down! Where is your intake leaking? At the China walls?
@@BlackLabGarage Yes but only the back one, I'm probably going to re-do the manifold during the winter. Not an expensive deal, but just a lot of mechanical wrench turning.
@ do you have a pcv system on it and hooked up? My 400 in my 1979 F-350 pushed oil out the China walls and I discovered they had unhooked the pcv system. I hooked it back up and it quit leaking at the China walls
@@BlackLabGarage PVC on the passenger side, and the tube from the oil filler to the air cleaner on the other side. I will check the hoses and connections today.
@ I have seen the passage on the carburetor spacer stop up before not allowing the pcv to have vacuum
Thanks, need to do this soon. Mine is very slow starting. 351M/C6 in my 1979 Bronco.
I have had the ground cables be bad and cause slow starting also. They will look fine on the outside but I guess the are corroded inside under the insulation. I have used the negative side of a set of jumper cables ran from the negative on the battery to a good ground on the engine to see if it makes a difference when cranking. If it does then I replace the ground cable.
The best engine ever made. I really wish someone would cast some 427 blocks for daily use and not at a stratospheric cost. BBM was reasonable, but with one dealer now, you have to be a buddy to get one and it’s twice the price it was. For Racing Only. Another artificial control to keep them Freaking Expensive.
@@Bbbbad724 The FE engines are definitely the most versatile engine Ford ever built. From powering dump trucks to AC Cobras and Cobra Jet Mustangs they FE engines did it all. I like the engines but I still prefer the 429/460 engines over them. That’s only because the 429/460 is easier to make more power out of for less money just because they were a newer designed engine. The FE engines are a close second to me. One thing I will say about the FE engines. No other engine sounds like them. They are a unique designed engine with a unique sound all of their own.
@ My favorite was the 410 Mercury Parklane. It was 10.5:1 and with C6AER heads with CJ valves and just a.020 overbore you could get 413 ci of CJ power. I put the Comp282S or the Ford “D” solid with the thin steel gaskets and a 2x4v PI like the Shelby got in 67 with headers. 11.3:1 cr and SPS hardware back then and man I put it in a 67 Fastback Mustang. I drove it every day to school with 24” 3 inch header mufflers hollowed out. That car put a can of whoopass on every one who wanted to run me. I never lost. It was crazy and could hold 6200 for the 32,‘miles from Springfield to Bolivar on old 13 before they did the new one. It was so much fun and you are right a solid lifter FE, nothing sounds like that! I m blind and can’t drive any more. I have a 510 hp 394 ci 390 in a 65 Galaxie set up like a miler for Grand National. Man that was fun to drive. I miss driving!

Interesting, thank you sir 👍😁
@@davestewart9146 You’re welcome! Thank you for your kind words and continued support for my channel. It’s appreciated more than you could ever know
Thanks been wondering what to do with all my old fords.
@@Bikerbob59 if you have a small block Ford or 335 or 385 series Ford, no doubt the factory gear drive starters are the way to go. Less weight, more cranking power, and they draw less current from the battery when cranking. It’s a win win all the way around
I like that achieving 514 cubic inches (8.4L) is a simple endeavor with these things.
@@dadgarage7966 I think they make kits now that will let you go even bigger than that. I remember when you couldn’t get a stroker kit from Eagle or Scat. The first stroker 460 I ever saw used 440 Chrysler rods, offset ground crank, and I’m not sure what the pistons were out of.
Awesome! If/when the starter on my 460 dies this is what I’m doing. Thanks!
@@BradyWeatherford dollar for dollar it’s one of the best upgrades you can do. Plus the gear drive starters do not draw as much current when cranking either.
Did this to my 86 F250 years ago, really like the upgrade. One thing I will say though, years ago we ordered a stock direct drive 390 automatic starter and didn't use it, I wound up using it in my 4 door galaxie eventually. Looking it up it appears to actually be a 302 starter that was sent as it only has two bolt holes instead of three. It's been working perfect for 4 years now, wonder if a SBF PMGR starter would also work?
@@MattsRageFitGarage I’ve never checked the bolt pattern between an FE and SBF starter. It may be they are the same
@@BlackLabGarage They are the same, just the SBF lacks the third bolt ear. Apparently the engagement is the same as well, 3/4" throw or whatever it is. The starter I have on there now cross references to my truck as well. I bet a PMGR SBF starter would work with it.
@ does the bendix itself appear to be the same?
@@BlackLabGarage Sure looks like it. Both are 9 tooth bendix gears with 3/4" throw. The location in relation to the center of the starter looks the same as well although the PMGR starters are offset from center-line a bit because they're 10? tooth gears. I looked up the bendix for a 1989 F150 with a 351 automatic and its the same Standard SDN-77 starter drive as for a 1968 Ford galaxie with a 390 automatic. I'm going to say a 302/351 PMGR starter will very likely work with a FE/auto trans with 184 tooth ring gear.
It sounds good!
@@Bbbbad724 it sounded real good thru the two chamber mufflers.
I believe all you have to do is put an eyelet on that small wire on the starter, which I believe is a fuseable link, over to the main cable post on the solenoid on the starter and leave the cable on the solenoid on the fender well where it was originally from the factory. This is how Ford had the 460s setup with 2 starter solenoids in the 70s and 80s. It's what GM guys would do if they put a Ford solenoid on their cars with headers heat soaking their starters before mini staters became available. Oh course they would have to run their wire from the starter to the Ford solenoid they installed.
@@JrSamples-g4v if you’re talking about using a jumper wire on the starter mounted solenoid, Ford specifically recommends to not do this. It will work but it can also cause the starter to run on for about two seconds after the engine is running. I tried it myself years ago and it happened to me as well when I tried it.
@@BlackLabGarage I can confirm the starter will run on, which is why I won't do it that way even though it's a little easier to install.
@ some people seem to not have that problem but I know I did when I tried it and Ford and others warn to not hook them up that way because it will cause run on. Why some guys don’t have that problem I’m not sure?
