I, too, read Harlequins while in college. They were a nice break from Linear Algebra and Cell Physiology. But I haven't read them in more than 40 years. Today, I read very little "lit-tra-chur". Maybe 6 or 8 classics or biographies a year. I mostly enjoy mysteries (regular and historical, not thrillers or modern cozies) and SFF. I love JD Robb and Dick Francis. The Prey series by Sandford, the Alex Delaware series by Jonathan Kellerman and the Amos Decker series by Baldacci are some of the easiest reads for me. And I do love Evanovich!
I noticed in one of your older videos that you enjoy legal thrillers. Have you tried David Rosenfelt? His Andy Carpenter series are good mysteries with some humor and dogs. Open and Shut is the first of about a 30 book series. The main characters grow through the series, but each book is a completed story. I also love Greg Iles! Last year, I read more than 120 books, and his The Quiet Game was one of the best of the whole year!

Harlequins/Mills & Boons are very easy reads when the brain needs a break.
I’ve yet to try Baldacci but intend to soon.
I haven’t read Rosenfelt either, I’ll look into him. Thank you!

@NerdyKathi Baldacci has 6 - 8 series. I enjoy the Memory Man ones (Amos Decker) and the Atlee Pine ones. I don't care for the others. Just saying so you won't judge all of his works based on reading only one book. Enjoy!

Definitely Agatha Christie for me…great for times when I need a comfort read and also great for getting me out of a slump.

My comfort reads are Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie’s Poirot mysteries. The characters are like old friends and I enjoy spending time with them, and since I know the ending, I’m not trying to figure out the mystery. I also pick up the Discworld series books for comfort reading. I don’t read them in order though, I pick out my favorite books in the series to reread. My latest trashy read was The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells. I enjoyed them and will probably reread them again.

Yes I think when you are attached to characters their stories are comfort reads. When I finish Discworld I can see myself also picking out favourites.

I'm not sure if I'd call them "trashy reads" exactly, but I'd say that TV and film tie-ins often fall into the quick, and light reading category; the "Charmed" novels based on the TV series definitely qualify. As for comfort reads - these are many and varied: the Star Trek books published by Pocket Books, Agatha Christie's murder and mystery novels; and my Top Three in SF - Marion Zimmer Bradley, E C Tubb, and James H Schmitz - all these are books that I return to again and again. 😀

I hadn’t thought of TV or film tie-ins but it would make sense they would be a comfort read when you love the characters.
AC is a very popular comfort read it seems. Thank you for sharing.

Great video!! Comfort reads can also be great literature. I'm thinking Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) and Agatha Christie. I think because you're already familiar with the characters (that you like) and they are short reads.

Cosy mysteries and fantasy books I've read before are my comfort reads. My "trashy" read is the Shadowhunter Chronicles books by Cassandra Clare 🫣

You know I love my alien romance novels!🛸 They definitely qualify as trashy comfort reads. Hockey romance and SJ Tilly books are more comfort books. I think as long as you are enjoying what you are reading, who cares what anyone else thinks.

Hah. I admitted to someone only this week that I used to read endless M&B! Comfort for me now is Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle Ngaio Marsh etc (so many similar here!) I also go back to The Rivers Of London series by Ben Aaronovitch - and Susan Cooper / Penelope Lively YA all the things I escaped to as a child ❤

This series is neither trashy nor easy (easy meaning getting through it fast), in my opinion, but I always love to come back to Discworld by Terry Pratchett. I hav read the 13 first books and am currently trying to collect all 41 of them. I am in no hurry to read the series because I love to come back to the comfort of Discworld when I am tired of reading thick fantasy books or am in a reading slump. Discworld is always lovely to read

I always turn to Warhammer/40k/AoS novels for my comfort novels in between more serious reads. A few of them have transcended their comfort read status to become a truly great read (Dead Men Walking was one.) They're usually 300-400ish pages, tops, quick reads, USUALLY tell complete stories.

"comfort reads" - I hadn't thought about books I'd define that way, but there are some that definitely fill the bill. Some are in the 'authors', because I may pick up a single book by the author on a regular basis,, some are specific books rather than anything by that author.
By author - Jane Austen, Ellis Peters, Robert Barnard, Georgette Heyer, J.R.R. Tolkien, and a couple of others. There are a few books - the single book, rarely anything else by that author - To Kill A Mockingbird, Across Five Aprils, Pied Piper are some of the ones I pick up every 4-6 months. A few of them I know I'll read start to finish but most I may just read a chapter or two and I'm content. There are a few authors who have books I love and a couple of books that I don't ever want to read again - does that happen to you?
Then there some special history types, usually specific books (like The Angry West, which is about the battles over water rights in the American West)
Thing is, I don't have to think hard about the book. It's pleasant, though I may find things i hadn't considered or remember, which is also fun. I can sit out on the porch, waving to neighbors while they are walking their dogs, or sit on the couch, while I (sort of) watch the Olympics.
Are some of these trash? I'm sure they may be. Are some of them a lot more than that? Some people would say they are classics. Thing is, I like them.
[now how about you? Hands down, Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austin; Venitia - Georgette Heyer; I just finished re-reading The Leper of St. Giles - Ellis Peters; and the chapter "The Pipes of Dawn" in Wind in the Willows.]
as a p.s. If you want to spend a lot of time talking about any of these, let me know and I'll send you an email address. And how is your new little dog settling in? Starting to act like a grown up yet?

      @NerdyKathi  29 днів тому

Interesting that you sometimes like to read only a chapter or two. I find I want to read the whole thing.
Yes some favourite authors don’t always hit the mark with me. As for trash, it doesn’t matter if they are or not, as long as we enjoy them.
Thank you for the offer but I don’t correspond by email as I don’t have the time to keep it up. Cleo is still a demon child but improving slowly.

Cosy Mysteries are my comfort read too occasionally there is one i also would call trashy the other books in the last time are Star Trek Books they are very comfy read too but also very trashy:-)) in a good way you explained :-) I don't know if you ever watched a video by Steve Donoghue but he recommends a lot of Star Trek and another UA-camr an English Men Criminolly created a Name "Garbaugust" where you read only "Garbage" in August, Trash/Garbage for me almost the same but i prefer the name trash its sound not that bad or judgmental which isn they way I understand that terms. As you said in the very first sentence Once trash is anothers treasure so true.

I also really enjoy the MC Beaton Agatha Raisin and Hamish McBeth books but I really don’t consider them to be great literature, or even great writing, they’re just really fun characters and a light, “ridiculous” read, almost a parody, lots of fun and not to be taken too seriously.

Hi Kathy. for cozy reads I usually go for a novella. it could be any genre. For example. atm I'm reading the mist by SK before I jump into something more time consuming. Another comfort read of mine is Stepford wives by Ira Levin its quick and camp and I love the nostalgia

I used to love reading Mills and Boon too. 100% trashy but fun, fast and needing zero brain power. My favourites were those from the 80s and 90s. Unfortunately I got rid of them all and I have had the odd urge here and there to read one, mostly when I’m super stressed. My current trashy reads collection is a small set of romance novels by more established authors (Nora Roberts, Julie Garwood, Janet Chapman, Judith McNaught) - though it has been ages since I have read any of them.
Comfort reads for me are JD Robb, Nora Roberts mysteries, and some smaller, quicker series (eg Black Magician by Canavan, Ancient Future by Harding, All Soils by Harkness, Belgariad, Mallorean, Elenium by Eddings). Also some of my favourite standalones are comfort reads that I revisit again and again (eg Sorcerer’s Legacy by Janny Wurts).
Like you, I can’t just pick up a book anywhere in a series. If I’m going to reread, it will be the whole series, from the beginning.

    • @NerdyKathi
      @NerdyKathi  29 днів тому

Yes I too get the odd urge to pick up Mills & Boons, particularly favourite authors.
Oh I forgot to mention Amanda Quick, aka Jayne Ann Krentz, she’s another “trashy” read for me. The Belgariad and Elenium are also comfort reads for me though it’s been years since I read them.
      Thank you for sharing. 😊

Georgette Heyer is definitely a fun comfort read. And I’m reading Miss Read’s Thrush Green series also. Most of my reading can fall into a comfort category these days: D.E. Stevenson, Molly Clavering, Elizabeth Fair, Barbara Pym, Dorothy Whipple, Angela Thirkell, Elizabeth Cadell and some Mary Stewart. These are the kind of books that I need right now and they’re perfect for a comfort read that provides a little escape from responsibilities and stressful things that I might be dealing with.
