    When I thought I would go for the HD 490pro a new player comes to town. I asked you before about a comparison between the Sennheiser HD490 PRO and the Neumann NDH 30 but now those Sony MDR-MV1 have to be included. It would be like the final scene in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly , but only one should remain standing. I hope you will find some time to do that. Thanks

    Hey! Very nice review. I bought the Sony MV1 around a month ago and i have been using them mainly for music listening aswell as for movies and games instead of mixing/mastering. The sound reminds me of the classic Sony house sound (excelent bass definition for being an open-back headphone) mixed with some of that beyerdynamic treble touch and slightly scooped mids. I have a pair of DT 1990 Pro's too and those headphones have a much sharper approach on that 11k region. They are pretty sound fatiguing but i don't get that from the MV1. I'm really curious about your opinion on how the Sony's compare to the Sennheiser HD490 Pro and which ones would you prefer as daily drivers. I understand both headphones were developed for studio use but since both are comfort kings and sound really good then why not? ;) Thanks!

    • @galgogergo
      @galgogergo День тому

      I personally listened to the HD 490 Pros and the HD650s, and I found the 650s much better... Less fatiguing and less harsh. Also the 490s had that midrange bump for perceived "warmth" which I don't like as it is not accurate, and you cannot really mix on headphones like that (at least I can't) without a corrective EQ. So if these are better than the HD650s, then it's a win for me. Will have to test it, though. (although I'm not a fan of the Beyerdynamic sound, them I also find too fatiguing in the high-end, so I hope the Sony is nothing like them...)

    • @Christian_svedin
      @Christian_svedin День тому

      For pure enjoyment I would go with the HD650, they have a natural unhyped sound. The HD490 sound more towards the HD600, wide soundstage, 3D and with great bass extension. They aren't fatiguing but slightly more open around 2-3Khz. I do feel Sony and Sennheiser complement each other well. Good in different ways!

  • @galgogergo
    @galgogergo День тому

    How do they compare to the Sennheiser HD650s? I've made a comparison between a lot of Sennheiser/Neumann headphones lately (using tracks like Boz Scaggz - Thanks to you, Jennifer Warnes - The Hunter, etc) in a Sennheiser showroom with their own headphone amp, and the best headphones to me ended up being the HD650s. The low-mids were totally transparent without any “bump” in them (which some people may identify as being “warm”, but for mixing I’d need them to be completely flat, like they were here), and the highs were also not harsh at all (to me, AFAIK). The only thing I didn’t like was that it had a “bump” around 2kHz, whereas it would needed to be at around 3,5/4kHz instead - but this could be EQ-d out probably. Well, compared to this, how do you find this Sony MDR-MV1 to be…???? Is it also very transparent in the midrange, without any “warmth bump”? And do you “feel” it’s linear enough in the upper part? (I know Sony’s MDR7506s, and like them for the most part, even if a higher-end pair of headphones would have less distortion probably) How do the MV1s compare to the 7506, and the HD650 respectively? Thank you very much! ^^

    • @Christian_svedin
      @Christian_svedin День тому

      @@galgogergo I felt that the HD 600 was better for mixing then the HD650s, you can check out my comparison video if you like to hear my thoughts regarding that. The Sony's are special in the sense that like I described in the video, great mixes truly sound great while most mixes sound a bit distant. I do believe that the MV1 really can up your game but I do feel that its good to have at least two headphones available that you like with different sound characteristics. The sound signature of Sony headphones are quite different from Sennheisers in my opinion. Both have their strength and weaknesses.

    • @galgogergo
      @galgogergo День тому

      @@Christian_svedin thanks, II definitely will check the other video out! To be frank, the HD600 got omitted for some reason from that comparison, so it's on my list to make up for it eventually. (other contenders were the HD660S v2, the Neumann NDH30, (the 20s here also got omitted due to lack of time), and some other Hi-Fi Sennheisers (HD800s, etc), and 490Pros. Could you state what differences you feel between the Sony and Sennheisers? :) Just in general 🤔 Also, do you think the Sony could be suiatable for mixing, or it's more suited for listening for pleasure, etc? (I would need to have a pair of cans for mixing mainly. I have Audio Technica M40X-s, but would be good to upgrade to something higher-end, while still not breaking the bank)

      @@galgogergo Sure! Sennheiser sounds a little bit more upfront to my ears, it's like you are closer to the sound, not only by their tuning curve but something else. The MV1 and M1 from Sony sound a little bit different, where you are more like a spectator looking in. I really enjoy pairing both the MV1 and M1s with my HD25s. I feel I mix as good as with my main speakers. If you have the chance try them (y)

    There's a difference, but they're dame close (enough to where I would just buy a pair of the new ones over a vintage one). If I would have listened blind no knowing which was which, I probably would have guessed that the vintage tracks were the new mic. The vintage one sounded a little bit more open in the midrange and a bit brighter on top, I would have expected the new one to sound brighter between the two. I think I would probably pick the new one anyway as to me, the M49 is a "mellow" sounding mic. I liked the softer high end on the newer one. Interesting, great video as always!

      @@MillSounds yeah once i compiled the tracks I thought they where quite close. There is something about the harmonics in the vintage that sounds great though. The M49v sounds flatter but great! I do agree that a pair is always better to have then singles. Thanks for watching

    I really like them both. Knowing my voice, I feel like it would do better on the M49B which has a little more air to it and was a little less robust. I liked the more robust quality of the guitar on the M49V. I have two FleA 49s that sound a bit different. The one I use all the time and have featured in my videos reminds me of the M49B. The other one I have that I’ve preferred on female voices reminds me of the M49V. The best M49 I ever used was a gorgeous M49C. Maybe one day. Ha ha.

    If the new one was $3k I'd say "eh it's pretty close and sounds great", but at $9k I'd feel kinda ripped off, because the vintage clearly has more magic. The top end on the original is way sparklier and more deluxe.

      @@halcyo I would love to see Neumann making their microphone a little bit more affordable. Not 3K but at least sub 6k. They did do a great job with the m49v though ✌️

      Yea I guess I’m exaggerating a bit. I think Neumann makes great stuff- I love my TLM 49. The M49V sounds great, a dream mic for me for sure. But I’m actually quite surprised that the vintage version is NOTICEABLY even better. Guess ya gotta spend $15k for that special stuff haha. I just think if I had $9k ready to spend on a mic, I’m going to deserve to be extremely picky and choosy about every little detail.

      @halcyo noticeable better, also at least twice as expensive 🫰 of course you should be picky at that price point. Haven't used the TLM-series but wouldn't mind 🙂

      Would love to see you shootout the TLM 49 with some of the big boys it’s somewhat related to. It has a cardioid only version of the K47 capsule which is supposedly just a 1 sided version of the same capsule as the newer M49 and the U47. The TLM 49 is a nice vocal mic. I’d bet it’s even more fabulous through a tube mic pre or something fancy.

    I like the V better, but think the B would be better for production... the V is a bit more softer, but you can soften up the B if needed and the little more clarity will give you a bit more control... easier to soften than it is to add clarity

    They did sound pretty similar but I concur with your findings. The V had a little more body and the B had a bit more air. Either would be great to have.I've started to really appreciate the M49 as a great all-around mic. Not as much character as a U47 but much more versitile.
