Since you're using outriggers on your canoe, I agree not needing the electronic indicator on your Motor head, however, you could raise that seat considerably with outriggers and have the handle down lower, or just a quick fix, cut the shaft shorter. Everyone is cutting the shafts down pretty much to 24". And for the possibility of on a clear calm day and heading back to the dock after all day at maybe 5+ mph is pretty tempting to go with the Max. IMO.... good info thanks.

Both work. Carry a full size single blade as your backup and double blade for main. Swap as needed.

  • @tacticalskiffs8134
    @tacticalskiffs8134 3 дні тому

That trick with elevating the paddle is a good one. I just plane the back of the shaft to the point where the transition is tightened up a bit, but your approach does create some other options.

That is a dangerous cut on a table saw, for the grip. Particularly since the blade is pulling the piece away from the fence. And it is too short, wide and thick. It was also light, and your fingers were not involved. So easy when you know how. People sometimes forget you can just split pieces like that out. It won't work if the piece is gnarly, but I wouldn't choose a piece like that for a paddle grip. I've been building bent shafts, now and again for my own use, for 45 years. At one point I took a friend (later wife) out in a canoe, and as we rounded a point the wind picked up, and I masterfully took charge. At which point the carbon fiber kick point below the grip let go with a bang! Never had that happen with my all wood paddles. A common theme in boatbuilding, it takes more carbon than you think. Happily in human affairs, it only takes one trip in a canoe...

All right very nice video Pete and at the end of the video whether you realize it or not you kind of pull all the different ideas and concerns together. People that made me feel they don't have the time or they're not that interested in making homemade fire starters can just go to the store and buy those packages of commercial Fire starters. Now you're single desk lasted 8 minutes which is really long enough to get fine Tinder started. If we're thinking about saving money or making the fire starters last for an Extended Stay in the woods then it makes sense to make a single layer and maybe even cut it in half and start with half and then if you need more you can always throw in another one. The fire starters that lasted 15 minutes or more would be a waste to use if you have good tender and dry wood. Of course if you are going camping or you were packing a kit for survival you could have different ones so you can have some that lasts just a few minutes and then maybe have a couple more for situations where maybe there's limited Tinder or it has rained and most of the wood is wet. So I would buy some commercially made stuff but I like the idea of being able to make your own so that you can decide if you want a little fire starter that lasts just three to five minutes or you want one that last more than 10 minutes and if it gets hot enough you could actually make some fire starters to boil a small cup of water or to heat up a can of soup. You've got a lot of flexibility if you make a few of your own

What size what? Single blade paddle length? Do you mean the width of the double paddle blade? I think this is applicable to all sizes whatever you're measuring. Thanks for the feedback.

Single blade *insert strong opinion here* . Especially in wind; against the current; when fishing and paddle is down and you need to switch sides to correct, then you hit your child in the head when switching sides.

Good so far. But no one sits in the middle of the canoe. How about showing how to sit in the seat on the narrow end? Or how to turn the canoe around for tandem paddling? Or when two people are getting into the canoe?

That I can't answer. However, if I had to guess, I'd say it's because there is no serious competition. Most stabilizers and DIY home-made while any others I've found online are just cheap foam noodles. These are nearly indestructible and tough.

Why choose? carry both... a single blade is more rewarding but when you need the maximum a double will be better. I have used a double to get over a thick patch of Lilley pads and against a tide on a windy afternoon. Options are good!

You could use treated or untreated (then seal) 2"×2"s for the seat framing too, I think, if you don't have a table saw.

This is the trick you’re looking for; Use liquid paraffin lamp oil, 1/3 cup:1lb gulf wax or candle wax and NOT more than 1/3 cup because it will make the wax runny and messy. Forget the round cotton, fill paper ramekins with cedar chips and pour the melted mixture over them and cool in freezer for a half hour. 👍🏼

Trudeau: You don't need an AR15 to hunt a deer. Until you are Parks Canada. Sports Shooter: You cannot hunt deer with a RPAL, because you require and Authorization to transport from your home to a sport shooting gun range, and no one is granted a back country Permit to hunt deer with an AR15. Government: You don't need a suppressor, use ear protection. Government: We don't want to hunt deer with a 30 round magazine pinned to 5 rounds. Government: Hunting from a vehicle like a helicopter is necessary. Deer hunter: shooting any game from your vehicle is illegal, especially with an AR15, with a suppressor, and a 30 round standard AR15 magazine, that should be pinned to five rounds. Good question! I've never paddled the Bob 15 Special, but I do hold Nova Craft canoes in high regard. Though it's a solo boat, I'm not a huge fan of the prospector design in general. I like asymmetrical canoes with very minimal rocker for ultimate speed and efficiency on flat water. I'd consider the Bob Special for class 1 and 2 rapids if I'm paddling alone.

As a rule, I'd say if you're venturing farther than a few hundred feet from shore in open sea, I'd get something larger and meant for sea travel. This kayak is perfect for smaller waters and recreation. That said, much of your success is connected to the proficiency of the kayak's occupant! Thanks for the question!

FWIW in most US states, once you mount a motor (of any kind) on a canoe you are required to register it, and carry all the appropriate/ required gear (paddle, signal device, life jackets/ throwable etc) just like any other "motorboat".. I have 2 canoes now, a 15' Grumman and a 11' Sportspal, both registered for use with motors, and 2 electric (30/40# thrust) and a 1.5hp 2 stroke, motors :) I use a Rubbermaid Action Packer tote to hold all the required stuff, plus a waterproof box for my phone and registration, that I lined the inside top edge with a pool noodle, to make it unsinkable... also doubles as a seat when I want to sit in the middle of my canoe vs the end, as I use a kayak paddle most of the time..

There is no shortage of hunters in Canada that would put that meat to good use. But that's not what this Liberal government wants. It would have been so easy to announce and open a cull hunt season, and would have been just as if not more effective, would help Canadians, and would cost much less. This government is shameful.

Good video about footwear for Canoe & kayaking. I do a lot of kayaking from may Through November if the weather is still warm. I only kayak the warmer months because I have big & very very Extremely wide feet 🦶 sz15 6E wide ( which is very very extremely wide feet 🦶 ) with very very chubby fat wide toes that are Evenly straight across making my foot very very Extremely wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. My foot outgrow shoes , socks , & boots when I was young & Flip flops 🩴 is the only footwear that will barely and I mean barely fit on my feet 🦶 because my toes are wider than the flip flops 🩴 straps. I can't wear shoes or socks because my toes are Evenly straight across & shoes are made for toes that are at a 45° Degrees angle & when I had shoes on my 4/5 toes will get crushed & hurt my feet & toes & flip-flops 🩴is the only footwear that will Allow my toes to be comfortable & Spread out comfortable. Because of this i have to kayak barefooted 👣 because it not easy at all trying to find a pair of footwear that a size 15 6 E wide in a store. I have 6 boys & they all have very wide feet 🦶 & we all go kayaking , kayak camping , kayak fishing barefooted 👣. Now when we are at camp depending on the camp site we are Either barefooted 👣 or wearing flip flops 🩴. We don't have any problems with things getting Between are toes & are feet 🦶 wearing flip flops 🩴 because we watch were we are going. I have been do this all my life since I was a lil boys so you are talking about 50 years now with no problem at all beside having very very Extremely wide feet 🦶. I was born with very very extremely wide feet 🦶 for a baby & now I am a chubby fat dude not Heavy but i am not Skinny At all. Good video buddy thanks you for sharing this video.

Thanks for sharing this information and DIY project. I have actually done something similar years ago with cardboard egg cartons and various items, like dryer lint, pine needles, pencil shavings from a crank pencil sharpener and even pieces of pine cones. Heated up wax and covered all that. I did several test burns to see what was the longest burning fire starter. I am glad I stumbled onto your video here, even if it is 2 yrs old, because I have a whole bag of those makeup remover pads that I was going to also make into fire starters. I see for a longer burn instead of one, use 3 or 4 at a time. I, like you, like DIY projects. I even made a candle mold with 100% pure silicone and corn starch so I can make candles for my UCO candle. My wife likes to melt those scent square wax cubes, and instead of letting her throw those away when it has lost the scent, I save them so I always have some wax. Again, great video, thanks for sharing and I sub'd to the channel and will be checking out more of your videos. Juddie

Wow - that's a tough one! I haven't even thought of what's inside. I'm guessing they are hollow, but maybe not. The best angle would be to contact Spring Creek directly to ask what's inside. If they are hollow, and if you're good with your hands, you may be able to create a hatch that has a waterproof, durable seal. If so, you've almost invented a new product!! Way to think!

I believe in life jackets (PFDs) for every paddler or occupant of a canoe, no matter the age. I even have one for my dog. Did I say something different in this video?

Agree this is the ideal setup! The only two things I'd add: Some of the cheaper barrels and dry bags often compromise on the straps, padding, and backpack element. If you have a ton of portages or long portages, make sure your barrels and dry bags have high quality support. Second, if you can't afford a barrel or dry bag yet but have a good backpacking pack, just line it with a heavy duty garbage bag and voila, cheap waterproof pack. Thanks for the great video and cheers to Ontario paddling.

Absolutely! I've been happy with its performance and I'm big on portability. it takes up as much space as a coffee mug!
