It’s funny how we go on adventures but when something goes awry as in your case, the adventure really begins and we get a bit nervous with our situation. Thanks for the story.

Last year my daughter(14) and I started a new tradition for ourselves. We are both are both outdoorsy people. We love backpacking and camping. We love canoeing and fishing. So we decided to start going to the BWCAW. This would be my second time there and her first. We entered on Lake 1, and as we were paddling, same situation, we were in the wrong bay for the portage. The worst part is we were wind blown into the back of the bay. We made it through the week, bu there were MANY times I had that thought in my head “are we where I think we are?” and “was this the right decision to bring her here just the two of us?” Now, we are more confident in our abilities, our skill set has increased and we can’t wait for our next trip in July.

Reminds me of a trip taken when I was a leader in training at my summer camp. Me, 2 leaders slightly older than myself, and 6 10-year-olds. We went off course at one point (through blind confidence) and ended up in Algonquin park without realizing it. Camped at a site, councilors made a deal with the park ranger that cruised by, kids were none the wiser.
It was a solid reminder that just because things go wrong, doesn't make for a bad trip.

Thanks so much for the example. Sometimes the outcome might not be as good as yours, but it may be, in spite of ourselves! Cheers,

Almost every trip, I am humbled by trying to match what I'm seeing and the map. Points of land on the water blend into the background of trees at a distance. And you're correct when you said bays sometimes look alike. Navigating is sometimes very challenging. Oh, also, the maps are not always right when it comes to where the portage is located. I have spend hours sometimes looking for the portage to discover that it is on right side of a campsite instead of the left side indicated by the map. Everyone no matter their experience will experience frustration at some point trying to find their way. Thanks for the video.

My problem is I start thinking I’m really to good than I actually am…then I’m in trouble! It’s happened more than a few times!!!
