Portugal

In December 2018, I decided to move to Portugal. A few months and MUCH paperwork later, I arrived at the Lisbon airport with four suitcases and excitement to start my life abroad.
Five years later, I am still living in Portugal and navigating my way through new challenges everyday. Now I'm sharing information and my experiences with you to help you have a smoother and more confident journey abroad.

A Stress-Free Introduction to the FBAR: What Americans Need To Know About Foreign Bank Accounts
If you move abroad, you are likely going to need a local bank account. And if you’re a U.S. citizen, you may need to report that account to the IRS through something called an FBAR. In this video, I explain what the FBAR is, who needs to file one, the deadline to file by, and more!

why would you bother keeping money outside the US actually? just get a schwab account that has no atm fees, no foreign exchange fee, and great exchange rates.
either FBAR or you get fubar.
Thank you!
Keep enjoying the wonders of Portugal and thank you for all your informative videos.
I remember looking 3 years ago to retire and the prices were just starting to rise. Unfortunately we are not retiring there. Also the NHR scheme is not good anymore
video games are definitely not universally compatible although some are,.. it would be a very specific list so you would have to make sure which ones are and which ones aren't for whichever system.
Hi, How can I pay for apostille service if I am not US citizen, and living in Iceland which the banks here do not use CHECK or MONEY ORDER? I found NO answer at all on their website.
Good info on FBAR, thanks for sharing!
it is not much considering the most pleasant things in Portugal are free or almost free.
Why doesn’t she use her own voice 😮??
Portuguese people are very conservative. Still living in middle age
Who would have thought a thousand youtubers making videos saying Portugal is so much better than America to live would increase the cost of rent in Portugal. You only have yourself to blame.
i'm planning to take clothes, shoes, and that's it...even some of those will be left
Hello I need help I have a Portuguese visa and want someone to help and tell me more about Portugal
I only have 100€ furniture. When I am moving to New Zealand in a few years, I will leave the old furniture and buy new one. I am also not replacing things now because I know I probably will be moving overseas 😊 and for the rest of the stuff I am decluttering a lot already to have enough time. And the rest I am planning on shipping in boxes (less can get destroyed or get lost at ones) 😅
When I lived alone for the first time I noticed some little things missing like my favourite bedding or my stuffed animals 😅 definitely remembering those next time 😊
What a lovely charming account of your residency process - I do hope you are settled well - I have my AIMA ( SEF ) appointment in 4 weeks time - just sorting out my healthcare coverage - M
I realize things may have changed in the meantime, but it sounds like you did the entire process without having to visit a consulate in person? I didn't think that was allowed. I've heard now that a 12 month rental contract is required. I think this is going to be the difficult part for me.. it's a problem for most similar visas in Europe, sort of a chicken and egg problem.. it's difficult to get a rental contract as a foreigner from USA without a visa. If you've learned anything new, please let me know. 🙏
Yes please. I will be applying in Miami
how to find houses in portugal can you make a video on it
Should come to Valença do Minho.
Thank you for the information. How can I get a NIF and open a bank account myself?
Please dm me your contact number, I am moving to Portugal :)
Julia, What do you know or think of D2 visa? Please make a video
DIVE, DIVE, DIVE, DIVE, DIVE...!!! WE ARE TIRED OF SEEING IT!!!!
Hi Julia! What kind of envelope did you use to send the fingerprints to the FBI? I am looking on the FBI website and it says not to mail the fingerprints by self-adressed envelopes, which includes pre-paid Priority Mail, FedEx account numbers, United Parcel Service. Also, did you send it while living in Portugal?
Portuguese sounds like a deaf Spanish person who got dropped in their head as a child.
Hello Julia I do have a questions what are the fee , the payments I have to sent them ? I have here 20 $ and also 8$ , do I have to sent to money orders or just one with 20 $? Thanks in advance
Do you have any recommendations for preparation of Ecuador taxes for US expats?
I don't specifically, I can only point you to the tax services I recommended: app.myexpattaxes.com/wizard?ref=juliarochelle
This is awesome news and informative. Thanks
Thank you Julia, very valuable information. I’ve been planning to move to Costa Del Sol for a while now and ten thousand questions start building in your mind, taxes is definitely one of them. Thank you again and who knows, maybe one day will meet in sunny Spain to talk about our expériences getting there. Be safe … Maher
Glad it was helpful!
Do expat taxes only do US? If so, do you use someone for your Portuguese taxes?
Yes, they are only for the US side of things. For Portuguese taxes, I use Taxes in Portugal: taxesinportugal.com/services/ Bordr is also an option: www.bordr.com/?via=juliarochelle
Philadelphia is the brand but because it was maybe the first brand introduced in Portugal, it is the most known. It is "queijo para barrar", which means spreadable cheese, to spread on bread. I don't know if it is the same thing as "cream cheese", because I don't know what cream cheese is. When an english recipe asks for cream cheese, I use "Queijo Mascarpone", Mascarpone Cheese, or Boursin, I don't like Philadelphia cheese for recipes.
Thanks for the detailed explanation!
Thank you, Julia.
when you go to VFS with a lease agreement and you get denied the visa aren't you screwed ?
There are a number of reasons that a visa can be denied. If it’s the living accommodations that are not sufficient, ask them why. Either your accommodations do not meet the requirements or you need to get better documentation confirming that it does meet the requirements
1st half is done online, get the code, go to post officer, then get your fbi check
Thanks for the video and the tips.
Thank you!!
You’re welcome!
What would you recommend for someone who needs to move to Lisbon coming from another country and needs to find something fast(I dont want roommates). Thoughts on housing everywhere
finally gathering documents for D7 visa, and have been watching your informative videos. did you have to be at home to receive the temporary resident card?
There was a signature requested. If you’re not at home, the post should leave a slip in your mailbox for you to bring to the post office to collect the card.
I have a house in Portimao and the electrical service provider I use is Iberdrola. I appreciate you sharing your expenses.
Interesting! I never heard of Iberdrola. What do you think of it?
@@JuliaRochelleAbroad Their customer service is very difficult to navigate through if you don't speak Portuguese but satisfied overall.
As a statesider I had heard that Lisbon has gotten quite expensive recently. Then when I saw this I realize that must be very relative as I live a very modest life with a strict budget here in Chicago and my living expenses are almost double. Also no nice restaurants usually. I do live by myself so housing is my largest expense at $1,175 and also have a car whose expenses are $300 all in (including depreciation--it's an old car). My base cost of living is $2,500 and among my friends I am known to be the tightwad so now I'm interested in Portugal even moreso as seems cheaper and with obviously much better weather!
You can live decently well in Lisbon on $2500 (around €2300) after taxes. If you’re looking to rent a one-bedroom apartment, it would be roughly half of that. I wouldn’t say you would need a car in the city
Hi. Lisbon has always been expensive by Portuguese standards, but on the other hand it has also been where people have always earned more and better. If you leave Lisbon, the cost of living is cheaper, meaning those who work in Lisbon but live abroad substantially improve their family budget. It is also true that the cost of living in Portugal started to rise from the end of 2016. With the pandemic the increase was nonsense but it seems like it was the same all over the world too. I just remember that in 2016 we filled a car with groceries with 45 euros and the month was spent with 200 euros for 2 people, it was a month with plenty of everything. Today we need to spend more 100 euros at least.
Thanks for sharing! It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one overwhelmed with the increasing prices. It’s tough for so many. I am hopeful for the future that things will improve
I've lived in Porto for almost two years, and my expenses match up with your expenses with the exception of rent. My rent is 1.500 per month. I know it is very expensive, but it was a matter of 24 hours to complete a lease because of a deal that fell through. I love my apartment in the center of Porto, and I'm happy that I have it. My social security covers all of my current expenses, and I have not touched my retirement savings. At my age the saying that you can't take it with you is important.
Hi John, thanks for sharing. It’s interesting to hear that the expenses are similar in Porto (minus rent). I hope you’re enjoying!
Excellent presentation. I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest that there are a lot of properties going on the market via word of mouth and they don't appear online or in public advertising. Keep em coming !
Yes definitely, and you can snag a better deal that way. It’s just hard to know about them
🇪🇦🇪🇦🇪🇦🇪🇦
Love your channel! I'm confused about why a Portuguese bank account has to be opened. How much do you have to have deposited and what's the purpose of the funds-- can a substantial amount count toward the money required for a D7 visa?
Thanks! The money in the bank account is the proof of funds. My assumption is that they want to see that you’ll have access to your money when you’re in Portugal
What is expected of you if you want to renew your two years residency to 3 years?
Last time I renewed it was automatic, I only had to update my address and pay. However, since AIMA is replacing SEF, I’m not yet sure what the process will be going forward
I got mine this week. The information out there is completely out of date and misinformed. Take all documents with you to any appointment and ENSURE you get a NIF number. Go to the offices first thing in the morning and get a ticket. Do not expect anyone to speak English. Get your ticket and depending on the number you get, got for a coffee somewhere for a few hours. DO NOT miss this appointment. It's been very hard getting this VISA because of the chaotic and bureaucratic system. I hope it's worth it.
Hi! First of all, thanks a looooot for the concise info you talked about in your video. I haven't been able to find someone that explains it so well (at least in english). I believe the efficiency of getting the appointment is now harder than ever (even more now that SEF closed and now all visa and permits issues are taken care by AIMA). I've being trying already 5 months to get it, but I can't seem to move forward with it. Have your heard any recommendations around it? Just keep calling? Thanks again! <3
Unfortunately, I don’t have advice other than patience. I know others who have been in your situation and eventually got their permit. Stay hopeful!
