    My uncle is an immigrant in Portugal, he was paying 700 euros on his 3 bedroom apt and when he left Lisbon to Algarves, the landlord put the price to 4k. He says that because of Covid and expats working abroad and getting paid in dollars, prices went up (minimal wage in Portugal is 740 euros per month (770 dollars)

    In 2022 paid $1500 a month for my 3 bed 2 bath with a river view balcony in Principe Real (never took transport ,a perfect central location). When I left in Jan 2023 the landlord increased the rent for the next tenant to $3500. House prices in Lisbon rose shockingly fast.

      That’s wild! It’s a great location but more than double in one year?? What are people supposed to do?

  • @kanji_nakamoto

    Landlords starting to struggle to find tenants at those prices. Although, there are people willing to close their eyes and have the flats overcrowded. Unfortunately, we still have a lot of layoffs happening, on top of that less companies offering remote only positions, meaning that the number of people able to pay London prices in Lisbon is reducing. I have reasons to believe that this is quite unsustainable. Thanks for sharing your experience in Lisbon and good luck with everything!

    From what I'm hearing, if I was to live in Portugal, I'd probably pick northern Portugal in either Porto or Braga. But I prefer the Azores.

    • @milanance4369
      @milanance4369 3 місяці тому

      It’s all relative. I know people who dream to move from Azores to mainland. Also depends on which island of Azores. Some are rough and lack infrastructure.
      We live by Porto & it became very overvalued for the quality of housing (mold and temp regulation issues). We don’t care about Braga (not much to do if you young). RE market became very overvalued since we moved here. Sad & very unsustainable

    thank you so much for this. we're hoping to move to Portugal next year and plan to be in Lisbon for the first year. use it as a home base and travel around to find a more permanent place. we're looking at furnished 1-bedrom for 1000 or furnished 2-bedroom for 1500 OR can go up to to 1500 for 1-bedroom. does this sound reasonable?

    • @JuliaRochelleAbroad
      @JuliaRochelleAbroad  Місяць тому

      For those prices, I’d expect a decent neighborhood and some remodeling. Also depends on the size. It seems to be a reasonable price these days, unfortunately. It might be possible to find a bit cheaper

      You can look to rent bedrooms if you’re okay sharing, there are options to rent like that month to month so that you have more flexibility. To sublease a full apartment, you may have better luck on Facebook marketplace. There you have people who want to travel for a while so they rent their place out while they are gone

    thanks for the video. as an immigrant living in Spain this seemed scary to me. Spain is lot bigger compared to Portugal so you have a lot of options. We just moved to a small city with good connections and paying 500 euros for a 2 bedroom apartment in an historic city centre. i think you dont have this kind of options in Portugal.

    I realize it’s all relative but the low price of rent for of all these places is ROCK BOTTOM compared to where I live 😅

    • @JuliaRochelleAbroad

    • @Wee_Catalyst
      @Wee_Catalyst 4 місяці тому

      @@JuliaRochelleAbroadYep, not too different where I am-a one bedroom by yourself costs well over $1.5k and more likely, like you were saying about the apartments there, there won’t be many offered in that range and 1 bd’s usually are closer to $2k
      A room to rent averages around $600-$800 US and when you consider that folks on minimum wage (or even worse waitstaff who make less than $3/hr and are counting on tips) are aiming for those “cheap”est places it just breaks a heart to see how people have to struggle these days all over the world to afford a roof and 4 walls 😢
      It’s also common here for landlords to not rent to people who would be spending more than 30% on their housing-they check your income and if it’s higher than 30% a lot of places can legally discriminate against applicants that way-forcing folks with lower incomes into crappier housing than they might be able to afford-which is INSANE TO ME
      The rent is too d*mn high!

      Hmm interesting... Perhaps instead of talking prices & values maybe we should say like - Rent costs 50% of wages. Something like that... No? Yes? Bad idea?? One thing I should say to you people, since you are not natives... Houses in Portugal are somewhat OLD. They have like 50, 70, 80 years of existence. Soooo, problems like mold... Yeah those will happen! I have them in my house right now! I think we have to use some sort of special paint to prevent it.... And I saw one video and it was like, you have to tear the face of the wall, bleach-clean it, reconstruct the face of the wall and then paint it with a anti-mold/humidity product. Something like that! I saw the video a longggg time ago, so don't take my word for it.
      And yeah Rochelle is right... Just because prices seem low... Doesn't mean anything. You have to take account the wages in the country! So a regular rent in Portugal is like 50% of the salary... Which is a HUGE hit on the bank account. If we consider shopping, that takes like 200-300€/month... You almost save nothing. So basically, living paycheck-to-paycheck.
      I'm almost tempted to ask Rochelle how can she survive here 😅 This ain't America dear! It's tough life!!! (am I being a patronizing douche or being a realist?? idk)
      Best regards dear friends. And good luck to you all

    • @MaryRenaud
      @MaryRenaud 11 днів тому

      This is my biggest concern. We're planning to move soon but are somewhat blocked by trying to figure out how we'll be able to ensure we don't end up somewhere with mold. Mold in a home is a deal-breaker (for health reasons) and we would have to move out right away if we ended up with a place with mold... but all of the content I watch makes it seem like it's a matter of course and like maybe we just can't move forward any further with our plan to move.

  • @marycherry8D
    @marycherry8D 4 місяці тому +3

    Yup. The prices are rising because of people like yourself. Willing to pay 500€ per month is ruining the market for everyone.

      It's the choice and greed of the property owners and property managers that are responsible for the skyrocketing rent prices. We move to Portugal for a better quality of life and a more reasonable cost of living. Property owners see huge $$$ signs with foreigners and they are destroying the housing market, not the other way around.

    • @milanance4369
      @milanance4369 3 місяці тому

      Nobody in right mind wants to pay more - local or not… Many immigrants do not realize that they have been taken advantage of by the landlords as they new to the country & many desperate to find a shelter in a new place/country.
      Blaming renters for ruining the Real Estate market is the same like blaming victim of rape for being raped & saying that the victim agreed to be violated …

I am EU-Italian Citizen I was offered a job in porto in a call center for 1000 euro net pay, I won’t get deported but I checked few feedback and seem I risked to end up homeless or in a food bank plus inflation and recession. If you do not have extra income or three wages you are screw plus still a backward country .To sum up another place to skip , don’t get why people give their ass to move there and even chase a visa and so on..
