Hey guys, this is TheMallFox here. I go to malls all over the United States and document them whenever I can. I've been dead malling since 2022 and I hope to continue into the foreseeable future :)
Parkway Place Mall | Huntsville, AL | Alabama's most Successful Mall during Christmas.
Parkway Place Mall, which opened as a mall in 1976, is the most successful mall in Alabama in terms of occupancy. Originally, the property opened as a strip mall all the way back in 1957, and was enclosed in 1974 after being hit by a tornado that was part of the 1974 tornado outbreak. Opening with Montgomery Ward, Pizitz and Parisian, it was the 4th mall in Huntsville to open at that point. Other malls in the city included Dunnavant's Mall, Heart of Huntsville Mall, and 'The Mall'. Later, Madison Square Mall opened, and essentially ran every other old and outdated mall out of Huntsville. Madison Square was called the "super mall" of Huntsville, and yet today is demolished and gone.
Parkway City Mall was falling flat by the late 1990's, after having operated pretty decently alongside Madison Square Mall, and the failing other malls until their demises. It was then that CBL & Associates scrapped their plans to build another massive mall development in the city and announced plans to raze the old Parkway City mall and build an entirely new mall. This new two story mall opened on October 26th, 2002 and today is pretty much the most successful shopping mall in Alabama. It even managed to kill off the "super mall," Madison Square, which was larger, had more stores and anchors., but faltered due to a lifestyle center development known as Bridge Street Towne Centre not even 2 miles away, and a reputation of crime.
Today Parkway Place Mall is anchored by Dillard's and Belk, and has every mall store one would expect to find at any decent mall, most upscale stores in town are in the lifestyle center, but this mid market mall will hopefully be here for many years to come.

Regency Square Mall | Jacksonville, FL | A Massive Decaying Mall That's Mostly Closed.
Переглядів 2 тис.14 днів тому
Welcome to my short look at what's left of the Regency Square Mall in Jacksonville Florida. Once a powerhouse boasting one of the highest square footage sales numbers in the country, this mall has fallen long and hard since its opening on March 2nd, 1967. Back then, it was a pretty simple mall, anchored by May-Cohens and JCPenney, with JR Anchor stores Furchgotts, Ivey's and Woolworth. Through ...

The Westgate Mall, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, opened for business on October 25th, 1975, originally featuring Meyers Arnold, Belk Hudson, and Sears. The mall would expand in 1977, adding JCPenney, and again in 1995, adding JB White, Dillards, a new food court and a 8 screen movie theater. Westgate mall's existence indirectly hurt the newer but ill fated Hillcrest Mall, and itself had to re...

The Northlake Mall opened in late 1971, and once was the largest mall in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout the years, the mall would see great success until the 2000's when vacancies would appear. Making things worse, Simon sold the mall in 2014, and then anchor stores started closing. This was the nail in the coffin for the once thriving mall, and recently half of it has been converted into a white...

The Middlesboro Mall is a beautiful example of 1980's rural mall architecture, which miraculously has survived to see today, unaltered. Opening in 1983 with JCPenney, Belk-Simpson and KMart, this was your standard mall fare featuring mall favorites like Aladdin's Castle, Disc Jockey, Bookland, Kay-Bee Toys, and more. Unfortunately, like most malls like it, it has declined over time and now feat...

This was the mall I went to growing up in Stone Mountain. My Mom would drop me off and I would have a ball…I remember Structure & Record Bar was the best! Also went to the movie theaters across the street behind the mall. Good memories of a forgotten time. 🤩
its just kinda old and abandoned. but around it is stores, and in there is a live rage room. really fun
So cool to see this video from my old town! The theater started as a Jerry Lewis cinema but was in a building in the parking lot that was torn down to build the CVS that is there now. They theater stayed in operation from 1972-2000. In the 80s I saw many movies at that theater and spent a lot of quarters at the arcade in that mall. Cinema Treasures has a great writeup of what they called the Carmike Movies 2 location at that location.
The last time I went to this mall was like 7 years ago, and it's still just as incredible.
I remember this one and a small giant memory of visiting the Madison square one as a kid
I have a ton of memories of this mall. From walking around as a teen to building the Torrid in it to getting recruited into the Army in this mall. I honestly surprised it is still as healthy as it is today. Once Madison Square Mall shutdown and got demolished, everyone thought it was inevitable that Parkway Place would meet the same demise. Nearly a decade later, it's still just as strong.
This was my go to mall living on the southside of Gwinnett as Gwinnett Place mall was further and much more crowded (at the time). My grandma used to take me back to school shopping here in the 90s at the JCPennys. The fountain you mention was the center piece of the mall. I just recently walked through the mall on 12/23/24 and even the heat had been shut off throughout the mall. Sad to see it go.
15:12 such an unforgettable image! My dad loves to remind me how he 'lost me when I was 5.' I was far from lost 😂. While he was in Books-A-Million, I was having the time of my life at Toys R Us. Hearing him tell the story 30+ years later is such a blessing. ❤
Wow, this brought back so many memories. I remember every mall you mentioned! Awesome job!
Low crime, stable upper middle class demographics, not too much competition from other malls, and fairly easy to get to. These are keys to whether a mall will thrive or die. Amazon is NOT the cause of malls dying. It’s these factors I just mentioned. On a side note, carpet in malls is always a bad idea. Other than that this is a beautiful mall, though I regret not seeing any fountains or much greenery. I still miss the classic 80s malls with the fountains and lush plants and trees.
@nole8923 oh believe me, Those 80s planter malls are my favorite, but in a world of Thriving bleached simon malls, Parkway Place is alright in my opinion.
You are deserving of vastly more than 1000 subscribers. Well crafted production...again!
I missed getting to the fountain mall that had toys r us and books a million
Storer Cable, Prattville's Cable TV provider, used to have an office in that mall. I also remember a sporting goods store being there in the early 80s. Crystal Palace, a video game arcade, used to be in the mall as well. I also remember an office supply / art supply store being there in the mid 80s. Next to Food Outlet was Big B Drugs.
I wS there when that .all opened I even went to the one story strip mall before it got renovated
Huge silent hill fan here ...whenever I go to this mall I imagine I'm in the mall from silent hill 3. Always love the vibes
Loved pic of The Mall!
I haven’t heard of this mall…. Good video!
I really like the way this mall looks, the history is really cool too and I love how you included all these historical pics
Great video dude, your skills are getting better and better everytime !
Great video Zac
I’m really digging how far your production skills in editing and narration have come. Tremendous video, Zac. Happy Holidays!!!
Great job buddy!
I have a really good photo of the inside of Quenby Mall from 1965 and you can see Grant's and Singer Sewing machines. I colorized it and it turned out really well. If you would like a copy I could email it? Would be great if you could add it to this video. Not sure if I can post on youtube. I grew up going to this mall and remember many details of it.
My mom used to work at J&G's next door when I was a kid, in the early 90s, and I spent a ton of time there. It was T&G's to start out, ran by Tina & Gloria. Tina sold out sometime in the very early 2000s. I spent a lot of time in this little mall but dont think I ever actually went into any of the shops. It was always so empty I could go hang out there by myself while Mom worked. I thought it was a strange little area. A strip mall with an actual indoor mall in the middle of it. Also spent a lot of time at the old movie theater. The movie theater was never in the mall, though. It was in the bottom of the parking lot, where CVS sits now. You could go see a movie there for $2 in the early 90s. The Cinema 12 ran it out of business. The last movie I ever saw there was Baby Geniuses in 1999. It closed in the early 2000s and was used as a law office at some point, before the building was left abandoned and torn down to make room for CVS. There was also a small carnival that would set up in the parking lot between the movie theater and T&Gs that I went to sometimes. That gated area used to be for loading and unloading merchandise but now it's just storage. One year we built a parade float in that area for the Christmas parade and I got to ride in it. I made a lot of wonderful memories in that little strip mall. As another commenter said, I dont remember it ever being Piggly Wiggly. It was Food World when I was a kid, where Food Outlet is now. Piggly Wiggly was in another building a little ways down the road, closer to downtown. That building was just recently torn down a couple of months ago to make a parking lot for local businesses.
It was a Piggly wiggly for a little while but it didn't last
This is the mall that I wanted to see for a while, but after seeing how horrible it’s become on the inside, I don’t really know if I want to anymore. Especially if it means I’m gonna get sick just from recording a UA-cam video. Glad to see there’s at least other videos of this mall online. I do feel like if they left the other half of the mall open, and closed off this half with the food court, I feel like the mall would’ve probably been doing remotely decent still, just because that other half seems bigger. Great video as always!
Holy Neon this place is awesome! Talk about an untouched 90s hidden gem. CBL really knew how to bring pizazz to a mall back in the 90s. Great video man!
It used to be Brunos, then it was a Food World and moved to a different location, which is NOW Food Outlet. It was never a Piggly Wiggly, that I know of. Price's Donut Shop was in front of the "mall" entrance, you can still look through the glass windows and see the counter and the bar stools that we used to sit on. There was a 5 & dime, true, named Grants. The location later turned into a store named Fred's, which eventually moved downtown. This area of Prattville above downtown used to be named Prattmont. Straight across the highway, where Subway is located, used to be an A&P grocery store, and a drug store. Somewhere in the parking lot area used to be a huge Country's Barbecue restaurant. Which in the seventies, used to be a shoney's. Where Taco Bell is, used to be a Burger Chef fast food place. On the other side of that was a gas station owned by my uncle. On the same side of the street down by the intersection, a long time ago, used to be a gas station with a very cool statue of a dinosaur out front. Oh, anyway, back to the plaza....
Still beautiful, even with the mold. The plants and fountains are such a treat
I love this mall!!! I live here and it's my favorite mall to shoplift at! Much love man!
This is a wild comment. Shoplifting is lame.
I’ve spent quite a bit in J&G 😂
It's crazy to see how much this mall has decayed. I remember riding the train ride in the center main entrance of regency. Hell, I think we swung around the mall sometime in the 2010s just to see what was up with it still. It sucks that it's basically dead now. Though, the last time I went to the mall, it was during Covid when they did covid tresting in the Sears. It was wild going back in there after it closed/
Haven’t been in about 6 years now. Sad to see my Ex-favorite mall
everyone goes to the avenues or orange park mall now. regency was already heavy in decline in like 2001 when only half of the mall was really getting used
I have been in and out of this mall for over 50 years it's crazy to stumble across this video the whole metro Montgomery area has changed so much over my lifetime it was a booming area very pleasant to live around for many years but as the light people moved further out because the city became darker and darker now the whole area is a shity place to live and has became very dangerous so now I have moved out even further to escape the crime and darkness that now inhabits that whole are around Montgomery Al if you go there be gone before dark or you will be in for some unhealthy adventures
I liked how they made so many skylights throughout the mall.
This was THE place to shop in the early 1980s. We mostly went to Orange Park Mall because it was closer but this mall had so many high end stores and it was huge! It's kinda sad to see it like this.
Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. Regency mall use to be lit 🔥
As a teen my friends and I wandered the sand dunes where this mall would eventually be built. When the mall started construction I worked as a telephone lineman placing cables in the structure. Spent many years shopping here; hard to believe the state it's in now.
My hometown 😢
Sad for sure, so many great memories as a kid going there when it opened all the way til the '80's. there was a strip mall on the Sears end before expansion with Annie Tiques, Gingess formal wear, a mens big and tall store and a grocery store, cant remember if it was a Big Star, Colonial or what ?? many memories of perusing the record bar, Spencers gifts, radio shack and mr. Dunderbachs !! At Christmas time the place was packed and as a teenager it was the place to see and be seen, trolling and flirting with girls !! Also Eastside Marios was a fav hangout for me in early '80's with bogo happy hour 22 oz. beers and free appetizers ! SIGH...Good times : )
Oh my God, my boyfriend got his tux for My senior prom at that Tux shop! I had forgotten about it till I read this...
I moved to Jacksonville when I was 19 in 1985. This mall was the first place my mom took me to and I shopped there for many years. I also worked at Houlihan's as a server and bartender from 1992-1997. I learned that Christmas isn't really a joyful time for mall workers, as people were exponentially meaner to servers during the holidays. I was surprised. I can't remember my last time in that mall, but I do remember buying my wardrobe for a real estate job in the early 2000s, so my last visit was likely after 2005 when I bought a house in the Orange Park area. I heard that it had become wild with crime with out of control youth creating chaos and taking over sometime soon after that. I am truly sad it is decaying. I have many great memories of shopping, going to the movies and working at Houlihan's. Thanks for the video!
I would hang out at Regency all the time. The best part was when the food court was 2 stories, with the 2nd story being more seating area that would overlook the actual mall area looking down on the people shopping. The entrance to the movie theater was also in the food court and you would have to walk under the 2nd story seating area to enter. It was such a great mall, especially during Christmas! As large as the mall is, the mall was always packed with people and you had to hunt for a parking space.
Good memories of this place as a kid growing up in the 80s. Da would take me and bro to the arcade(s) to play skiball for tickets. Eventually bro and I graduated to proper video games. Not sure how good my memory is, but I think the first arcade where we played skiball was in the expansion wing, and it closed first, leaving Aladdin's Castle, on the food court side. At some point after that there was Tilt, as well.
I was born & raised in Jacksonville, been gone 2 years. It is so sad to see the decay of Regency Mall.
Underrated part of why Regency died was River City Marketplace opening up on the northside of Jacksonville in 2005. Regency was still plugging along even if its days as a premiere shopping destination were long gone because the Northside didn't have any shopping destinations and Regency was the closest mall. Once RCMP opened up they could only rely on Arlington which has been going downhill for 20+ years.
🎯
Yup!
This is my hometown and it breaks my heart to see what the mall has become. It’s hard for businesses to stay in our mall because of how insanely expensive the rent is. If the owners would be more flexible with said rent then we could have a lot more stores than we have now. I’m also sorry that mall employee was so unkind. You weren’t being malicious at all and you didn’t deserve that treatment.
This mall was the place to do all of your shopping. I remember as a kid before the 1981 expansion there was even a grocery store separate from the mall at the west end. With the 1981 expansion it really became the place to be. I graduated high school in 1982 and so many of my classmates worked there and if you didn't work there, you cruised the mall and stopped in to visit all of your friends. I feel like the crime at the mall was pretty low back then and I'm going to guess it increased in the 1990s to early 2000s.. My husband worked at Bresler's Ice Cream in the mall back in the early 70s. He's 71 years old now, but can still talk about working there, scooping ice cream with his friends, and the great work ethic instilled by the owner, Mr. Kerner. As a child I remember my mom taking me to Larry's Shoes to buy my school shoes every year. I remember buying my first business suit at Casual Corner for my job interviews after finishing college in 1987. I also regularly shopped at the young women's shop 5-7-9. It's sad when things like this totally go by the wayside, but hopefully when the inevitable happens and it is torn down, the space will be used for something that works for the community now.
I had a lot of great memories. It's so sad going in the mall now. I wonder if they realize if they lower rent it could fill up and make more money than what they are making now.....
Just like harlan's mall
Nicely summed up.
Nice little video. The food court here is a gem, it'll be sad when it inevitably gets mulched
