Elden Ring & A Song of Ice and Fire Parallels | Elden Ring Theory
So, I've been working on this video for ages and I still feel as if I've missed out on some things or got them wrong. I tried my best to double-check everything however, if I did overlook something, I apologise. I thought this would be an interesting video to make as I adore ASOIAF and Elden Ring so much and since I'm currently reading A Feast for Crows, I couldn't help but notice similar themes in both works. I just hope that I'm not delulu and others see it too lol.

    Don't be worried about being off the mark if stuff gets confirmed, the whole point of lore interpretation and thinking sessions people come up with all sorts of stuff and a lot of times aspects of everyone theories overlap. Also, if you listen to David Lightbringer-this ASOIAF long time theorizer and analyser of GRRM ASOIAF many of GRRM fingerprints are all over Elden Ring. It is far more-the lore, far more GRRM than Miyazaki, but the two of them seem like two peas in a pod though. Miyazaki said himself though it was all GRRM lore, and then they blew it up. It also does seem that Radagon was wanting to be the ruler.

    Radagon is like Jaime in that he swore an Oath to Renala. An Oath of Love and Loyalty, and one that he broke for the love he bore Marika. It's probably this event as what motivates him to reform the shattered Elden Ring, as his Oath to the Golden Order is the last thing he hasn't forsaken, the last thing he hasn't let Marika strip him of.

    Great video! I'm pretty familiar with elden ring and the way Miyazaki likes to write, not so much GRRM, so its very interesting hearing theories like this. I really like the idea that maybe Radagon wasn't originally part of Marika, but became soul bound to her and was slowly absorbed, sort of how male anglerfish are attached to and absorbed into the body of a female after mating. My theory regarding Miquella is that he was born very early into Marika's life, and might have even personally known Mesmer. I also think Melina, or whoever she was originally, was Mesmer's twin. So you had the firstborn twins, and then Miquella/Melania some time after. Considering the way the scarlet rot seems to affect Millicent's memory, I think it would be incredibly easy for Miquella to manipulate Melania, even if it was "for her own good".

    I really don't think the idea of Mohg and Miquella incest is so clear. it is a vague interpretation of circumstances at best. it is actually not clear that any of the gods are born of sexual relations either. A piece of evidence suggesting they don't is Melina discussing her mother in one line, and in another wondering if "being born of a Mother mean one behaves in such a manner." Suggesting while she has a mother she was not born in a traditional sense. There is also various carvings and images suggesting individuals being born out of the tree. which is baffling.

      I think this is simply a case of: Miyazaki and Fromsoftware not wanting to delve deeper into more vulgar territory. (E.G) - Martin wouldve probably wrote, and it is HEAVILY implied that, the Deathbed companions have intercourse with worthy champions so that they transfer their warm and lively vigour onto the Deathbed companion, that she will one day carry that vigour to give to the remains of the dead, granting them chance at life…. But in the game, because Miyazaki and Fromsoft don’t usually delve into the sexual implications, we simply get a hug from the Deathbed companion to convey this story instead. Fromsoft probably simplified the sexual aspects of Martin’s Elden Ring lore due to them being too inexperienced in exploring more overt sexual implications, from a visual standpoint A lot of the sexual implications of Elden Ring can just be boiled down to: Fromsoft not wanting to overtly display direct sexual connotations for the sake of, what they deem as probably, unnecessary storytelling. That’s not to say it doesn’t exist whatsoever, as stated above (in the Deathbed comparison), Martin likes to draw inspirations from real life struggles and situations to convey his storytelling - as such, he likes to explore more explicit storytelling for the sake of realism. - This is most definitely used in Elden Ring with reference to Mohg/Miquella; Deathbed Companions; Melina having a mother; the incest (implication) of Radagon and Marika being responsible for accursed children; etc.. - But that’s just from Martin’s side. And from Miyazaki’s side, there’re several references to Motherhood, the womb and child birth being important for Godhood: Miquella’s cocoon being a ruptured Uterine over a pelvis; Rennala conducting failed rebirth experiments using an imperfect embryo (larval tear); Marika literally cradling the Elden Ring in her womb (a lot of heavy implications for this if you think more about it); subsequently, Marika being pierced in her abdominal area; Malenia abandoning her sprouting’s (children of aeonia, birthed from the clash of Malenia and Radahn); Tannith adopting Rya, secretly hiding the fact that Rya was born from the amniotic sac of a Serpent; etc. - There are some more examples from, what little we know, new DLC material too. (E.G.) Messmer possibly being a bastard of Marika; a new Omen creature, that the Elden Ring Social Media account revealed, looks to take the shake of the Uterus; a woman is Pregnant, with her hand resting over her bump, in a painting of the Gameplay reveal trailer of the new DLC; Marika, in the beginning of the new Story trailer for the DLC, looks to be stealing some threads(?) from a womb (this one is speculative); etc. (SIDENOTE: this is probably the most damning evidence but, I also think that if Martin is going to write a giant Family tree, there would definitely be sex lol. Such is the the only way to birth children as humans😂)

    • @ofcatarina
      @ofcatarina Місяць тому

      @Darkheart00 this was a great read. Ty. I don't take any issue with this interpretation. But slot of the best evidence you put forward comes from outside the game. Miyazaki at the end of the day provides the final cut. I don't think he is afraid of vulgarity and sexuality. I'm not sold, but your ideas here ate as likely as any. 0art of what makes ER so good imo is it's faithful adherence to archetypal ideas. Because of this we can see similarities from many works and cultures. Is it all an analogy of Rome (grrm does like to do this type of thing)? Is it all about alchemy? Is it referential to Christianity or Norse mythology? We lack sufficient detail even to be certain about the broader concepts. I hope the DLC provides a sort of Rosetta stone for lore interpretation. Thank you again for your insight. I'm better with questioning theories than producing them. So I really do appreciate the time you took there.

    There could also be a connection between Azor Ahai and the Frenzied Flame that might have heavy implications on ASOIAF if GRRM meant to make so many parallels with his own works. This would make Azor Ahai an enemy of humanity and not the Hero everyone is expecting due to the relation Azor Ahai has with yhe Frenzied Flame in Elden Ring I feel. Azor Ahai's sacrifice of his lover and the Lord of Frenzied Flame refusing to sacrifice his Maiden are also neat contrasts here too.

    This. I could never quite place my finger on how I'd describe Radagon and Marika's relationship besides comparing it to Malenia's and Miquella's, but this... This works perfectly. I take it you may or may not remember our conversation on the Messmer video. As such, I'll only add this: I suspect that Radagon's semi- antagonistic relationship with Marika was not their default so much as it was what would be the result between Miquella and Malenia if Miquella never" fulfills his promise". Like Malenia, Radagon was loyal to Marika throughout the years, and was one of those who helped carry her to victory and godhood. What follows is the fallout of her never succeeding in making up for what he lacked; for his own curse. She could not silence the Flame, but only contain it atop the mount. Unlike Malenia, who knows her brother is struggling somewhere to somehow find a cure for her, Radagon watched Marika succeed and then give him none of what she promised. Their merging might've been an attempt at fixing that mistake, but the fact is, Radagon's focus changed from Marika to the Golden Order itself, as an Order where his curse would theoretically be impossible to reawaken, and easy to ignore. He took on the effort to make up for his incomplete nature himself, and become a founder of Fundamentalism in the process, teaching his son the essentials. Note: Another piece of evidence that Radagon was at least Marika's relative was him joining the Houses of the Erdtree and the Moon through marrying Rennala. Since the house of the Erdtree is the ruling house, the house of Marika, it follows that Radagon was certainly part of it, or else he wouldn't join the houses.

    There was a recent twitter discourse where someone claimed that Miyazaki alone mostly created the story and that the elden ring story was nothing like Game of thrones so Martin could not have had a hand in writing it. Furthermore they claimed that G. R. R. Martin was just used as a marketing ploy to use his name to garner more audience. This video and several other by Jack is a mimic laughs in the face of those foolish comments. Also really amazing video and theory. Thank you so much, and I've heard of those honestly. It's a bit weird to me how people tend to just say that stuff out of thin air without realising that George wrote asoiaf and game of thrones is only the first book. It isn't even about the game of thrones, the race for the iron throne is a side quest lol, it isn't even the main plot, there's so much more to the story. I think that the show really tarnished (pun intended) George's reputation and how amazing his books really are, some of the best work I've ever read. The plot is so much more than politics and court intrigue, it's so deeply rooted in magic, prophecies and just human nature. It's a fucked up world, don't get me wrong but it's that way for a reason.

    Awesome video! I admit, I never thought the relationship would of Marika/Radagon as siblings, but you do a great job of putting it in context. It makes me wonder, in the end, Radagon had all but replaced Marika as the dominant role. Could Marika have done the same, to her own previous sibling that created her? A cycle of betrayal, one god dethrones the next, and erases history, and then deludes themself into thinking they will never be replaced as well? All until they realize they can have no equal, and tries to create a new being from their own perfect godhood, and the cycle repeats.

I have been using the brothers D to explain Marika and Radagon forever and you did as well, absolutely stellar. Some of the characters I think have overlaps with multiple ASOIAF characters, for example Rennala and Radagon fulfilling Cat and Ned The Carian colors are the same as the Tully colors, Ned leaves for the capital at the King's request where Radagon leaves at the request of the Queen Marika, and based on my own theories, Rennala's grief for her daughter Ranni's death mirrors just everything about Cat's chapters and how she feels about her children Ranni as Arya, there is a sword crafted by Iji called the Frozen Needle. Arya betrays(or will betray) the Faceless Men assassins based out of Braavos, a city founded by escaped Valyrian slaves and who have the motto "All Men Must Die". Ranni betrays the Black Knife Assassins, all female numen, who literally dont have faces. Blaidd fits Jon Snow, half wolf who is close to Arya(Ranni) and if you do her questline Ranni will say that it was us and not Blaidd to help her with her destiny. This mirrors what happens in the show, so take that as you will, but Jon is not Azhor Ahai. Rykard and Tanith's relationship is much like Stannis and Melisandre. But the biggest one is Bran. Miquella is Bran, without going into too much details because I am trying to do that with my own videos, we can just look Mohg. The Lord of Blood, with a horn growing into his eye, and grows raven wings, kidnaps Miquella and slakes his cocoon with blood. Much like Bloodraven, a weirwood root growing into his eye, and feeds Bran some Jojen Soup. Consider Miquella can bewitch others, if that is the case, who is Elden Ring's Hodor? Please make more videos with the parallels you notice and thank you for making this one!

      Omg thank you so so much and gosh I never saw that Cat and Ned thing mostly since I was focusing more on individual characters. I think that's a really good parallel, white Cat and Ned could very well be a parallel to how their relationship may have been during their marriage, I think Jaime and Brienne are a good example of the sadness attached to their tale and how despite probably yearning or wanting one another, they would never really be able to be together. I also really like the idea that Cersei is pulling the strings behind Jaime and Brienne as she is and so was Marika with Radagon and Rennala. I had a comment earlier today talking about you and I never thought you'd watch my video haha, thanks a lot!

      @@bigppisha I started rereading GRRM's Tuf Voyagin and in Loaves and Fishes there is a character named Tolly Mune who is a homely woman like Brienne who falls in love with the main character Havlidan Tuf. I don't know if this is crazy but Tolly sounds like Tully and Mune is pronounced Moon, and the character is much like Brienne in appearance in this story. I came to the conclusion that Rennala was like Catelyn because her robes are Tully Colors and Radagon was filling the role of Ned You came to the conclusion that she fit the role of Brienne and Radagon filled the role of Jamie If you subscribe to Radagon is a mimic, then not only as a person can he change but as a character he can "change roles" After reading "Tolly Mune"'s name and how she acts I am inclined to say that both interpretations are right and intentional. FINALLY, SOMEONE MAKES ONE OF THESE!!!! Okey, I know this is focused on Marika and Radagon, but I also have to point out how Morgott and Stannis reflect each other, both are "unloved" by their family and kingdom, both are fierce warriors, very much keep unrelenting institutions due to duty but most importantly this is done bc both never get loved back (also the mechanic of Morgott of literally having to break his "poise" for him to use his cursed blood, leaving his pride to finally get you vs Stannis killing Renly (kingslaying) as to finally get what he wants, the iron throne, this one might be a reach) I just think that both characters are soooo alike in a lot of the themes. Regarding Marika and Radagon VS Cersei and Jaime's parallel, Marikagon get a lot of theories that they are based off the alchemical concept of "Rebis", a being made out of a perfect combination between disparaging elements including man and woman, having the heads of both. Marikagon show this through the wonders of the golden order, but I think the same can be applied to the Lannister twins but a separated Rebis but when united it just showcases the worst aspects of both and also their house. ive never read the series or even watched the whole show so this is definitely a weak spot in in my ability to speculate. but i really dont think that Radagon has to have different goals than Marika. We use the fact that one is trying to fix the ring as the other is shattering it as the proof. theres alot of parallels, but all the parallels are linked and inseparable. and it could even be like the attempt to repair the ring is what shattered it in the first place. "let us be shattered, both" sounds like an invitation to me. He knew what was going to happen and did it anyway. yet the general idea is hes trying to repair it. i have a theory that is ranni and godwyn were supposed to get married and that was radagon/marikas plan all along. but im not really sure why. something about marika trying to refine herself or the ring or something. idk, but from a political perspective it seems like everyone was either under marika and the capital. or radagon and the carians. so godwyn marrying ranni basically would have united the lands between. if you strip away the sword and sorcery type stuff thats what i see. paired with marika radagon/ sister brother theory it all seems to fit thematically. that ranni realized she was a pawn in some weird political game and instead managed to bring the whole thing down. it makes most sense that radagon doesnt know he is marika imo. but it works either way. My big sticking point though is im almost 100% sure that Marika and Radagon have the same motivation. We are just exploring the duality of that.

    George really loves family stuff. Is it because of the shock factor or something, something dark side...

    • @bigppisha
      @bigppisha Місяць тому

      As a huge fan who's like, really in-deep with asoiaf stuff, I can tell you that literally EVERYTHING George writes, every sentence, relationship and event in his work holds some sort of symbolism, foreshadowing and major importance to the plot, even if it's something minor, it'll probably connect to something in the future or the past or the present. And he never presents incest to be a good thing, in his work, the people who are in incestuous relationships always meet their downfall. The only reason Targaryens are incestuous is because of their dragon bonds even then, that's not a good thing because it's blood magic and it's been stated so many times how blood magic is bad. And in the future books, it's going to definitely to come and bite them in their arse.

    • @stars-and-clouds
      @stars-and-clouds Місяць тому

      I think George likes to emphasise found family over blood relations more. So he almost always shows blood family to be more of a problem than a blessing. For example the Lannisters are a shit family, the targaryens are all envious of each other, the starks are good but they have broken apart and have always been a tragic figure. Many of the main characters find a new family- Jon in the Night's Watch, Arya in Gendry and party etc. For Jaime, Brienne is a new family, in a way. Dany's is the people she has freed and who are working with her. None of the main characters really have a blood family they are close to rn. The wildlings (the ones judged the most by the rest of the kingdoms where family matters the most) are actually more united than the realms are. Incest is always a bad thing in his stories, they always lead to distruction. Blood magic is strong but also dark and should not be practised and we'll see that soon. There is a saying that everytime a Targ is born the Gods flip a coin, this is to signify their madness due to power or incest or both.
