Nowhere in fiction have I come across a place as mysterious as Asshai. What happened to this city? Why are there no children or animals? What is the light-drinking black stone of which all the buildings are composed? The river Ash? Stygai? Having all these questions but no concrete answers is maddening, but I take comfort in knowing there are others out there who share my fascination. I was looking for something like this, and I have not been disappointed. Thank you for this work of art, friend
There are several theories as to what exactly happened to Asshai, some of them being that it was the long night that polluted the place, or the bloodstone emperor's curse, the magic and rites performed there daily too most likely among countless others. It could either be all of those or none, I don't know if we'll ever know for sure. But thank you so so much, it makes me so happy that you enjoyed it ❤️ (Also a big theory about the stone that drinks the light is that it was made by the "mythical" deep ones or old ones, from most likely the shade of the evening who lived underground in now Leng or even underwater. Hence their love for a stone that drinks the light, making everything dark. Or it was just dragon fire that forged it, an art that came with the people of the great empire of the dawn and passed on to the valyrian same as the art of forging valyrian steel, which as we know is now lost. These are all theories of course hehe.)
I love how GRRM makes Asshai into a town so eldritch and Lovecraftian. If I could travel anywhere, it would be to Asshai. Idk why but I'm crazy about it, even though it's "imaginary"!
The Lucifer Means Lightbringer channel has a great series talking about the empire of the dawn and asshai. I would highly recommend as someone who also has a deep fascination with this part of grrm’s lore

You really manage to bring asoiaf to life. This is so enchanting and mysterious, it feels exactly as you'd imagine Asshai.
Most ambience videos just slap fantasy music over visuals, but you've really combined sounds to make it real. I love the whispers, potions bubbling, Melisandre's tune, and I can't believe you did the humming yourself. Between Asshai and Old Valyria, two mysterious cities we'd all love to know more of, you've done such wonderful work.
I wish you'd do more! These have become my peaceful haven.

Asshai…..the once proud and prosperous capital city of the Great Empire of the Dawn, the greatest and mightiest civilization Planetos has ever seen; this civilization made the Valyrian Freehold look like kids playing in a sandbox. Everything would have been fine if it weren’t for the Bloodstone Emperor screwing everything up and bringing forth the very first Long Night 😢
