Awesome breakdown! Elden Ring has SO much historical and religious context as well, there’s a lot to unpack. The idea of Messmer being the Impaler, like Vlad the Impaler, makes me think that he’s been drinking the blood of his enemies or something suitably horrific. George RR Martin also uses a lot of historical allusions in his works, so it’s easy to see the historical parallels there if you look.

Yesss, I'm a huge GRRM fan, like so much so that I must know almost every theory that exists out there about ASOIAF and there is no doubt that Messmer is a very grey character, must like how GRRM likes to make his characters. I'm not sure how involved he is on the DLC but he did make some lore for the whole universe so perhaps he worked with some stuff on Messmer too.

    • @bigppisha
      @bigppisha  4 місяці тому +3

Oh btw, another thing I wanted to add is the reason why Vlad is called the Impaler is because of the famous legend of when he impaled over 1,000 ottoman soldiers in the span of one night. So I wonder if Messmer had something to do with the giants atop the mountaintops who clearly appear impaled.

@@bigppisha Yes indeed, it’s definitely a possibility! Also the historical Vlad Tepes and his father Vlad Drakul were rulers of the land of Wallachia, a border kingdom between Christendom and the Ottoman Empire, so it fell to them to keep the borders of the Christian lands from being colonized. They became fierce enforcers of their rule, with the elder Vlad taking the term “Drakul” (the dragon) and his son taking the term Dracula (son of the dragon or little dragon). These dragons ruled through extreme force and violence and even ended up killing other Christian leaders who tried to depose them.
This could mean that Messmer’s role in the history of the Lands Between might have been one of enforcers of the borders of the Lands Between, where the shadowlands may have been a wartime border area. Marika may have wanted her son Messmer to do her real dirty work of destroying the giants and others while maintaining a plausible deniability. It could be that the Wicker Man of the shadowlands is Messmer’s creation, and that the Loathsome Dung-Eater comes from these shadowlands. After all, the Dung-Eater has the same sun motif as the Wicker Man. And we still haven’t heard about any gods of the Sun even though we have multiple moon goddesses. Is Messmer the god of the sun? In the Lands Between, the sun is eclipsed-eclipsed supposedly by the moon. But what if by a veil instead? Fun ideas to think on!

Ive been thinking similar thoughts. It seems to be in the minority but i feel like a lot of things point towards that conclusion. The timeline itself has been giving me some fits based on some details ive noticed in the world. In the mountaintop of the giants there are tons of impaled enemies. We dont really see any characters who we believe to have been there using any magic like that. Messmers monikor is the impaler and in the trailer we see him doing an attack with spears coming up from the ground. I really feel like Messmer was there during that conquest. If thats the case it would imply to me that messmer is very old. Near the beginning of the golden order old. Also in game we see Marika impaled when we find her with no real explination as to why. The color of the spear is similar to the color of Messmer's magic that we see in the trailer. It makes me believe Messmer might be the one who impaled her. With those two cases of impaling in the base game i cant help but feel there is a connection. If Messmer is old enough have been there for the conquest of the fire giants, it gives a new context to the dialogue of the trailer. Paraphrasing here but he says, "mother, would you really lordship sanction one so bereft of light?" If he is as old as I'm thinking that could possibly be a referance to Hora Loux becoming Elden lord. We know the age before the Golden Order was much more friendly towards the crucible aspects in the world. Horns, scales, wings, tails, were all held a much higher place within that older order. If Messmer helped conquer the fire giants then perhaps at that time the entire golden order or at least Marika's faction was accepting of aspects of the crucible. The crucible knights have always seemed at odds with the golden order and its ideals. Perhaps Messmer, the crucible knights, misbegotton, dragons, and the rest were all apart of Marika's people at this time. We know that somewhere a long the time line that Marika and Messmer had a falling out with one another. I have few ideas with all these things considered. Perhaps Messmer disagreed with the lordship of Hora Loux, perhaps the Marika betrayed Messmer in no longer supporting aspects of the crucible to form the Golden Order, its possible Messmer lusted for godhood himself in rivalry with Marika. There are a lot of possibilities. I think Messmers parantage could potentially been somehow nefarious. We know that Marika = Radagon is one of biggest secrets. We know now about the red hair and naming convention point us towards Radagon, the people of the land between and shadow land probably wouldnt pick up on that. We see an old man in the trailer that we know has some significance. Could that be Marika's first husband who she conived and conceived Messmer with herself secretly? There are so many things im currious of and am speculating about. I really believe in Messmer being older than any of the other demigod children. We know for a fact that he burned everything in the shadow. Its implied through his dialogue that hes in league with the Golden Order by what he says about burning those without light. Why then do he and Merika seemingly become enemies? Thats the big question for me right now. Was he a threat to her rule? Was he not in line with her values? We had never heard of Messmer prior to the trailer. That makes me believe his memory and history were all erased per Marikas orders. What caused Marika to exile or inprison her own child? She inprisoned Morgot and Mogue for simply being omen. I wish i had someone to talk to about it, to flush out the ideas, and to invistigate locations in game to get to the bottom of it. Youre the first youtuber ive seen with similar ideas to my own. I enjoyed the video and if this is your first bit of lore content then i really enjoyed that and would love to see more. I love elden ringe lore. If you ever wanted to discuss ideas with or investigate things in game id love to be a part of that

In dark souls lore, Serpents were seen as imperfect dragons. Makes me think Marikas son sided with the enemies, like Gwens son in dark souls sided with the dragons and was wiped from history. In his animations and models, his cape looks like its hiding wings. Would be really cool if his second phase was a full transformation. Or even weirder, hes a the son of Radagon and a Dragon/Serpent Diety. Either way, great video! Really opened up the possibilities they could go with his story

Messmer's line about being Bereft of light, gives me vibes that he's inspired by lucifer (satan) Satan was once the greatest angel and his original name meant "day star" "light bearer" "morning star" and/or "son of the morning" All of course to do with light, because he was once radiant (and technically still is as satan masquerades as an angel of light to deceive people).
Just like satan I'm guessing Messmer views himself as superior and thinks he should be in the place of God or in the case of the game, he things he should replace marika.

Pushes up glasses...Actually Satan and lucifer are two different beings. Satan is the personification of temptation and in Hebrew Satan means tempter. Lucifer is the light bearer, and is the gnostic God. I do think you are on to something tho. His association with snakes and trees is very reminecent of the garden of eden story. Maybe he has something to do with the first attempt at burning the erd tree? Idk excited for all the new lore tho

Mesmer might be a parallel of Godwyn. He could the one behind the churches of Dragon Communion which were frowned upon. Godwyn’s ancient dragon cult grants us lightning spells and focuses on befriending dragons, but Mesmer’s dragon communion hunts dragons and gives us breath attacks. I almost wonder if Mesmer hunting dragons for his communion is what triggered the ancient dragons’ siege of Leyndell, and Godwyn had to broker a truce aftwerwards. It would make sense to destroy the dragon communion churches after the war as well.

Omg guys guys, I just had a thought. Radagon despises his red hair, which as the description of the Fire Giant Braid reads "is probably a curse of their kind." Perhaps Radagon was allied with the giants (maybe due to his heritage) but deserted in favour of the Golden Order so the giants cursed him for his betrayal. A curse that would be carried on to his children.
Ranni goes against the two fingers (in a way the greater will) and orchestrated the Night of Black Knives.
Rykard went again the Golden Order altogether to establish the order of the serpent.
Malenia sided with his brother Miquella, in favour of a new god.
Radhan seems to be the only one who somewhat served the golden order but he too, towards the end was "betrayed" but her own half-sister, Malenia when she "cursed" him with the Scarlet Rot.
The we have Messmer. If he is indeed the son of Radagon and Marika, he too is cursed to betray what his father believed in, the greater will and the golden order.
All this makes Radagon hating his hair make a lot more sense, it is his curse, and one he passes on to his children. All his children are red-haired (except Miquella) and all betrayed the Golden Order in some way or another.

I believe this to be somewhat close to the truth, with one difference:
There is no indication the Fire Giants cursed either Marika or Radagon; what we know is two things:
      1. According to the Burn O Flame incantation:
" The Fire Giants borrowed the power of a fell god, but still were defeated. And yet, their failure released them from their solitary curse; to serve as keepers of the Flame for eternity."
      2. According to the Fire Giant's remembrance:
" Upon realizing the flames of their forge would never die,
Queen Marika marked him with a curse.
"O trifling giant, mayest thou tend thy flame for eternity."
Here, we must note the following:
      A. The Fire Giants were already cursed before their deaths at the hand of the Golden Order; they were cursed to serve as keepers of the Flame Of Ruin since seemingly time immemorial.
      B. The last Fire Giant, the one we fight, basically recieved the exact same curse, except this time, we know who gave it to him; Marika. In essence, she " renewed his contract" to the Flame; instead of finding freedom in death, he was now trapped doing his entire race's job for them.
In neither case is there any indication that the Fire Giants managed to mete out any retribution to Marika or Radagon; indeed, it seems they were somehow relieved by their own defeat!
But that still leaves the question:
Why ie Radagon's hair red? Why does he hate it? Why is it called a " curse of their kind" by the Giant's Red Braid?
Despite the language, it should be noted that, as Marika's equal half of a " single god", Radagon is of the same race as her; a Numen. As such, what could he possibly share with a race like the Giants? It is clear they themselves aren't responsible for his condition, so, what was it?
"Solemn duty weighs upon the one beholden; not unlike a gnawing curse from which there is no deliverance."
"These seals represent the lifelong duty of those chosen by the gods."
      Radagon Soreseal and Scarseal, respectively.
Here, we have a clue; both the Marika and Radagon Soreseal and Scarseal indicate that each of them were chosen for a task by " the gods"; evidently, the greater deities of this universe. The Outer Gods. That duty, to them, is like a curse from which there seemed to be no deliverance.
      What kind of curse, though?
"I would not be controlled by that...thing."
Does this remind you of anything?
Think about it; what else could it be?
Again, Marika and Radagon are equal halves of what they became; a single god. As such, evidently, they were equivalent beings before that; Empyreans.
Radagon was tied to the Flame Of Ruin not as just any vessel or servant; he was probably more bound to it than all the Fire Giants combined.
An Empyrean vessel; a God Of Ruin....
Or at least, that is what he should've been.
That leaves the question; how and why did this happen? Why did Radagon take the subservient role, allowing Marika alone to be worshipped? What cause was there for his devotion to the Order created by his other half? Why didn't he follow his destiny?
" I am Malenia, Blade Of Miquella."
You've probably heard that sentence hundreds of times, now; most of us have. But nobody quite stopped to figure out it's implications:
Malenia, an Empyrean in her own right, seems to renounce her birthright as an Empyrean, and instead acts as " Blade Of Miquella " , determined to serve her twin brother in whatever way she can, and bring his Order, not hers, to fruition.
She does this because she despises the force responsible for her own potential godhood; the Rot, that has eaten at her flesh since her childhood.
She does not wish to be, or become, her own goddess; instead, she wishes to be accessory to her brother's Order, believing that he " will keep his promise" and free her from her burdens.
That is why she, an Empyrean of Rot, is perhaps the most loyal follower of the vision of Unalloyed Gold.
      Now, I want you think for a second;
      Does this dynamic sound familiar?
      Because it seems as if...
That is exactly what Radagon is doing.
Like father, like daughter. Like mother, like son.
We don't know how many times this story has happened; how many " single gods" were born of one sibling sacrificing their future for that of the other...
But we do know one thing.
Marika did not keep her promise.

@@alyseleem2692 great analysis! But I want to point out that I added the, "it is probably a curse of their kind" is because that is very strange and specific information to add into a fire giant related item. Radagon was probably married to Rennala when Marika defeated the fire giants as there is no mention of Radagon having been involved in that event, she was married to Godfrey at the time. So for the item description to just throw Radagon in there, to me at least, hints that he was connected to them in one way or another, perhaps not literally but he may have been an ally until he decided to side with the Greater Will.

    • @alyseleem2692
      @alyseleem2692 4 місяці тому +2

@@bigppisha Yeah; the connection is that they both used to, or were destined, to serve the same master.
      The Flame Of Ruin.
The Fire Giants, in exchange for sacrifices( as seen in the Fire Giant ripping off his own leg) , bound themselves to the Fell God, and became its vassals, wielding it's power, using it to command fire and forge masterfully crafted weapons and shields ( like the one the Fire Giant carries). In comparison, Radagon had that power innately as Empyrean; in his own Order, he would be their " God", just like Marika is to humans, and Malenia os to the Kindred Of Rot. The representative of their Outer God; the Fell God.
In a world where Radagon's fate was realised, he'd be leading an army of Giants crashing down the mountains, eager to burn the Erdtree and everything built around it to the ground!.......
      But Radagon didn't want that.
      Radagon didn't like destroying things.
He liked sewing things; he liked making things. Forging things. Learning things.
He didn't like breaking them; he didn't want to. He refused that destiny of his. He despised it; all of it! He despised the Flame, the Giants, his hair, all of it! He wanted to be free to love things without breaking them!
The Golden Order was an an Order where things were only built; never broken. Where things only lived, and never truly died. It's principles were essentially Radagon's goal; creating a world where beings like him could never break anything. Where nothing could be lost, or destroyed.
      Ever.

Radagon and Marika's dynamic is, in my opinion, something close to what Malenia and Miquella's future would have looked like; as twins with each bearing their parents' image, I don't thinking merging was beyond them. In fact, it would've been the most likely outcome.
Radagon is as devoted to the Golden Order as his son Rykard and daughter Ranni are devoted to breaking it. He is devoted for the same reason they are; he built this Order with Marika as his escape from his own shackles.
      Evidently, it didn't take.

Great video, thanks for sharing! Love the idea of Messmer being that snake and perhaps that earning him his sentence.
I have been super curious about how this will all play out and what misleads we are all falling for. We know we will be “tracing [Miquella's] path and following in his footsteps” while uncovering "why Miquella followed the Queen [Marika] there", I can't help but wonder what is hidden between these lines.
My personal theory is that we are going to learn the true nature of Miquella's affliction (eternal youth) - which I think will be in the form of being naive and over-trusting. I am curious if Messmer didn't actually trick Miquella into coming to the shadow realm. Perhaps to trap Miquella there in his place. Or, to build off your Marika-Radagon understanding, maybe Messmer is trying to force Miquella to merge with him. Maybe his physical form is banished, but if he overtook Miquella's form, perhaps he could return and face Marika.
We know how much Miquella has tried to free his sister from affliction and that he desires to follow in Marika's footsteps. There is plenty of ammo for someone who speaks with a forked tongue.

Miquella is only following in her mother's footsteps. He went to the lands of shadow and created Messemer by removing all the blasphemy from within himself. I wouldn't say Messmir is against the Golden Order. His first few words in the trailer were questioning his mother why someone without Light could be chosen as Lord. And he punishes people who don't worship the Golden Order right?
It seems, to me, that he's so loyal, he'd indulge in any power just to enforce the GO's power.
It looks like has dragon eyes with some dragon wings as well, he has snakes on him on. And most notable, he has his own flame (looks similar to the chaos flame from Dark Souls). And I'm pretty sure flames are forbidden by GW right? Something like that lol

So I've got a crackpot theory
I believe that the "Land of Shadow" was hinted at before the teaser image of the DLC was released last year. Here's my argument
After being unable to enter the Erdtree, the player can consult with Enia, when bringing the matter of burning the Erdtree and acquiring the Rune of Death she states the following "Heavens forbid... That is not the domain of mere men.
The burning of the Erdtree is the first cardinal sin.
And you say you seek power of the Rune of Death, too?
The Rune of Death goes by two names; the other is Destined Death.
The FORBIDDEN SHADOW, plucked from the Golden Order upon its creation.."
My 2nd theory is that the Erdtree was burned before. And itwas Messmer who first burned the Erdtree given the fact that even before burning the Erdtree in the maingame Leyndell seems to already be covered in ash, additionally it also seems that Messmer to some degree has the ability deliver a True Death. And his flames seem to have some minor similarities to the Giantsflame and Destined Death/Black Flame ?
Sidenote Heres a little odd thing I noticed with the names Malenia and Melina
With some research I noticed something interesting
"Melania is a name steeped in mythology which it can thank due to its Greek origins. Melania, also known as Melinoe, was the goddess of ghosts and spirits. " It also seems to have some connotations with the color black or dark ?
I believe that she in some way was to inherit the rune of Death or perhaps be affiliated with it
"Malenia is daughter to Queen Marika and Radagon, and her Great Rune should have been the most sacred of all."
    And for Melina
( The greek name Melina derives from the noun meli (gr. μέλι), which means honey. In other words, Melina is "the one who is sweet as honey" or "made of honey")
Were the roles of Malenia and Melina switched during birth ?
Well this is where my theory ends :)
Hope we'll be able to see more of the this world in the DLC

I came up with a theory after watching the latest trailer. You say that Messmer might be the Great Serpent. What if he's actually its son? My theory is that before the Golden Order and Marika's ascension to godhood, Eiglay the serpent and Marika were allies and even had a child. One of them was betrayed by the other (I'm assuming Marika was the betrayer, because history is written by the victors and the serpent ends up forsaken).
The latest trailer references "seduction and betrayal", which is something we often associate with snakes. We can see Marika with a golden bracelet in the shape of a snake, and the scenery reminded me of the bodies fused to Rykard's sword.
Messmer has obvious connection to snakes. His title "the Impaler" is a nod to Vlad the Impaler aka Dracula which translates to "Son of the Dragon (in many myths, Serpents and Dragons are the same thing).
Obviously this is a hunch, but if it turns out I'm right, you heard it here first folks!

    • @bigppisha
      @bigppisha  Місяць тому +1

I actually said that Messmer is Radagon and Marika's son, made when they were either joined or made into two, most likely at the beginning of her reign, as we saw in the trailer but your theory seems quite plausible too and I also thought if the "Impaler" part of his known in connection to Vlad but didn't add it in the video, nevertheless, the story trailer had me intrigued and I wonder if what you say is indeed true. As for the armbands, Marika has always worn them, even when she was god of the lands between, I think they just look like snakes. Even if what you say is true, I suppose we'll find out soon enough, I'm so excited xd

What if Messmer is miquella. The other form of him just how radagon and markka are the same. One clue is notice how they both have very long arms. Miquella in his cacoon has very long arms just as messmer does

    • @bigppisha
      @bigppisha  4 місяці тому +1

But we have no proof of miquella's association with fires or serpents and miquella already has another form which is St. Trina. This too is a theory of course but it seems more likely than him being Messmer. Messmer could probably just be Melina's brother or twin, Melina is also very likely Marika's daughter and she too has one eye closed like him and she was "burnt and bodiless" when we meet her. Closer association with her than Miquella imo.
If Messmer really is Miquella, I suppose it could be a form of him that became corrupted when Mohg took him away, perhaps that's why he's abnormally large, due to his incomplete metamorphosis and he does wield flame which looks suspiciously like blood flame. But again, I'm not sure, somethings just don't add up. Messmer has clearly been there a longer, while Miquella's abduction is a decently recent event. So, I don't know.

We were trying to fix things and even we weren't allowed in. There is no way he could've known that Marika has shattered the elden ring, other than maybe the shattering casing rippled in the lands of Shadow, even if he did, I doubt he can just leave the realm of shadow at will. I have a strong feeling that Messmer is the bastard child of M&R. We know GRR loves his bastard plot lines, and may explain why Radagon left Rannala. Also, the Lion boss may also be a bastard child of Godfrey, as that would explain his use of Lightning and the Lion mask. Its look also gives of Margot/Omen vibes. Godfrey’s inability to provide a non-cursed heir could explain his banishment. It could possibly also be more than one bastard child, as we see multiple people under the armor.
