This is a small video I shot after work. The points in Inkwil, between Olten and Solothurn in Switzerland, are one of the few high speed points in Switzerland. Its geometry is a clothoid, which means it's radius increases, thus reducing the jerk and allows for high speeds running through (200 km/h).

We have to shift away from focusing so much on profitabilty. Any new or unestablished method is going to have upfront investments required, which likely won't payoff financially for a long time, because all of our current industry, infrastructure, is built around oil and other fossil fuels, making them inevitably cheaper. Oil was in a similar place in the beginning, where those businesses lobbied heavily and somertimes even forced themselves into government power to have their interests met, which lead to policies -- and subsidies -- that benefited their profit margins. The end of fossil fuel usage is an existential matter for humanity, and therefore (short-term) profitability should be deprioritised if not outright discarded, because the mitigation of climate change fallout will grant much bigger returns than any corporate quarterly profits ever could.
TOPIC REQUEST: please make a video about cheap and clever ways to do transloading. I thunk that this is less efficient than intermodal, but it is more efficient than using trucks on roads.
Great idea, thank you I noted it!
Felix, this is brilliant. It also is compatible with small containers, so that tracks which are too poorly maintained can still be used. This is great news for our region, because we have waste station and an incinerator near different ends of tracks, which could use some great service.
09:00 That train was quiet anticlimatic . Sae two locos and expected a beautiful swiss intermodal train.
Norfolk Southern ran a service in the 1980s called “RoadRailer” which simply took standard roadway-haul trailers and fitted them with rail-gauge trucks and couplers. My father-in-law was developing the intermodal network at Burlington Northern then & they gave the technology much study, but rejected it as the trailer frames just could not handle rail operation stresses and speeds & strengthened trailers would be too heavy to economically operate on roads. COFC proved to be the most flexible and economical solution here.
That trash compactor attachment transforming the hook-lift to a garbage truck - pure genius!
Is this the same system that coop uses on their RailCare trains? If you have the time and resources please check out the Cargo Beamer system. It’s super interesting but there isn’t much about it on UA-cam.
In India there's only konkan railways, A subsidiary of indian railways which manages the rail lines in the western coast of india also has RORO trains but not as advanced as having special rail wagons, but as literal Roll on Roll off transporter, Trucks get into/out of the train at designated Sidings ,This is highly profitable for konkan railways as the terrain of the Western coast (konkan region ,hence konkan railways) Is very hard to traverse and build roads ,combined with the bad road network, truckers find RORO services time saving.
Britain and Europe 🇬🇧🇪🇺 needs more systems like this one as it’s saves time and more time is saved the more money is made. Good video👏
Providing service has been eliminated in the USA. Providing profits for Investors has replaced that concept. The Currency of the G-7 Nations appears to now be challenged to survive. The majority of the Humans on the Planet are not served by Capital. That will cause some major restructuring of the entire system. We live in interesting times.
En France, il y a aussi quelques très rares trains de poubelles avec des containers ACTS comme dans le département de l'Oise
Question: what are the requirements for the balance of the goods in the trailers? Seems to me that the center of gravity of the goods in the trailer would have to be close to the center of the container, both forwards and backwards and side to side. Is this the case?
yes it has to be. In the end, before the goods wagons with loaded containers leaves the siding or the yard, the weight distribution of the wagons is surely inspected visually.
Jawohl, Schweizerische Vorbild🇨🇭🫡
I am not sure, but I feel like I've seen something similar in Freiberg im Breisgau
Very cool! I wish we would have this in Germany. What I don't understand: How can the operation of the freight trains be profitable? Or is it subsized? It seems like some of the trains (like those to the trash plant) are very short
currently, freight isn't subsidized in Switzerland. Frequently public authorities guide it though, for example by making it mandatory that the incineration plant uses rail freight. The plant siding has a very high slope of 5 %, thus the trains that go from the yard to the plant can only be so long. But profitability is a big issue of course too in Switzerland.
ACTS was developed in the Netherlands, dating back to the 1980's, the company (now defunct) even used an decommissioned NS class 1200 and Belgian class 55 and Ost DB V60 locomotives...
you're right calling it swiss is quite a stretch.
hi there there is one more the system by railcare were they can roll the containers from the truck to the wagons its called "Containermover"
yes you're right - it uses a special transshipment system containermover - mobiler. The downside of this system is that it requires a special fleet of trucks that are equipped with the system, while ACTS can use any hook-device truck. This makes it fare easier to integrate smaller traffics in peripheral areas.
Great video, really enjoyed the in-depth look. Would be interesting to see other rail transport industries
I think the ugliness of catenaries is always over-estimated, especially tram catenaries, which are very thin. Once you install the catenary, you probably don't even notice it.
I totally agree
🇨🇭🚂👍

Yes sure, that's from the bridge that crosses the classification yard maps.app.goo.gl/AC8si4mWKcgUQCau6
@felixonrails Thank you very much!
I believe COOP and Post office use a variation to this system for both international and RhB size containers to road trucks. I have seen this type of swing wagons being unloaded at Zermatt on the RhB meter gauge in 2014.
Très frustré de ne pas trouver le moyen de regarder la vidéo en version originale...
Quelle version originale ? c'est la version originale.
Most trash moves by lorry. The railways are not even for trash reliable enough.
I sadly don´t know the name of the system, or how common it is. But there is a system in Sweden where a wagon is swong out, and the trucker can reverse there trailer onto a traincar, and it can just swing back. This way trucks can be loaded from any siding. It work fairly similar to the system in the video, but it can load a full 12.4meter long trailer.
Maybe Modalohr, or Lohr Railway System?
@@felixonrails I did a bunch of googeling and duckduckgo ing.. But eventually i asked chatGPT and it know what it was about. ua-cam.com/video/0ffsMPVZXb0/v-deo.html The one here is for full trucks.. This is not quite the system that i seen in the wild. ua-cam.com/video/cnHf_L3EPr0/v-deo.html This looks more like the system used here. I may have mixed the two system together in my head, or there is a 3rd system that is some kind of version of the two
@@felixonrails This system from Kockums also look suspicusly simular to the swiss system you showed in the video. ua-cam.com/video/enm2cqHaxxQ/v-deo.html (the video is probobly a lot older than the 13 years since it was uploaded)
I had to laugh at the 400km profitability threshold - here in the middle of Canada at a major rail nexus, I'm ~800km away from the next major freight terminals, BUT there's at least a way to unload one 40'/2TEU container at a time every ~100km or so. Meanwhile, the road tractor units pulling containers are the exact same tractors pulling other kinds of freight. I'm baffled why the Swiss system is so complex and IMHO over-specialized. Mind you at the same time, we just pile our lightly-compacted trash info miniature mountains dotting the landscape, so I'm not saying we're more advanced :-/.
Every country and railways has its good and its bad sides. The goal should be to learn from the best of each. Mind that Switzerland is much smaller and more densely populated than Canada. Our system is probably more close to logistics with the Vancouver metropolitan area than Canada as a whole
Loading railway waggons on road trailers Hasn't just been experimente with, but it has been in productiv operation for years.
You should also take a look at Austria, where there is the company Innofright, which often has special solutions, but also shows the necessary foresight. In Austria, for example, there are Mobilers. Mobilers are swap containers for bulk goods that are transported by rail and are only loaded onto the truck for the first or last mile, and the cargo can also be tipped to the rear. For reloading, there are container wagons that have free space so that the truck can drive under them without any problems using arms that extend to the side and lift them up, so that the mobiler can then be moved onto them between the wagon and the truck, without any additional equipment. The system is also suitable for containers, tanktainers or swap bodies, which are also transported on such wagons. Reloading takes 5 minutes, and no one is needed except the driver... Voestalpine uses mobiler to deliver alloying elements for steel production and uses them to send metallurgical products such as granulated blast furnace slag to concrete and asphalt plants. Bernegger, an Austrian construction company, loads gravel into the area Molln-Spittal/Phyrn, from where it is transported around 100 km to its own asphalt and concrete mixing plant in Linz. Bernegger saves around 100 truck journeys every day. Incidentally, since the last government, waste transports in Austria have had to be loaded onto rail if they are transported further than 100 km. Trucks are no longer allowed to travel these distances with waste... But Austria is interesting in other respects too: 2 out of 3 manufacturers of system freight wagons are located here. This means that the chassis and the body are independent of each other, so you can very easily lift a body off the chassis and lift another body that serves a different purpose onto it, or use it to transport swap bodies such as mobiles, containers, tanktainers or swap beds. In addition to Innotrans, which builds the oldest type of wagon of this kind with the Innowagon, there is also the TransANT, which is a Voestalpine - Rail Cargo Austria Cooperation and relies even more than the Innowagon on lightweight construction with higher-strength steel types. The TransANTs are used, for example, between the steelworks in Linz and the Styrian Erzberg, and can therefore transport 316 tonnes more ore per train than their predecessors, the 6-axle ore wagons, and all with the same train weight. Since Linz does not need any additional quantities, this saves 2-3 train journeys per month... Both Innowagen and TransANT are prepared for the DAC and the associated measuring technology. The third player in the system freight wagons is the DB - VTG M2 project. By the way: It is also not true that container wagons are not allowed to drive through humpyards. Marshalling yards such as Maschen or the central shunting yard in Vienna Kledering have no problem with container wagons, loaded or unloaded, and you see these wagons rolling off there every day.
omg, that trash compactor module is GENIUS
I can’t see how this could be competitive with separate collection trucks, a transfer station, and transfer trailers. That’s a lot of small steel boxes to keep moving and requires track going to disposal facilities, which are put far away from where trash is made.
Huh, this exact system was trialled in New Zealand in the 90's or early 2000's and for whatever reason it didn't catch on.
It is really neat to see an older intermodal practice being put to use again! We had a system like this in the US in the 50's-60's. It was called "Flexi-Van" and operated via the same principle as shown here, but instead of garbage and waste, they hauled containers full of express freight, usually at the head end or rear end of a passenger train. This practice died out in the early 1970's when we created Amtrak, but the idea of the "intermodal" concept carried on and then took off in the early 1980's.
How did they do that? We can’t haul express goods in ACTS in Switzerland because of the tilting of the container when loading and unloading with a hook-device. Pallets would shift in the container and thus destabilize the wagons. Thus we only use them for goods like gravel, waste or anything somewhat solid. Edit: I just had a look, it seems like an interesting system with a few similarities to ACTS yet different. Thanks for the hint, I’ll definitely put that on the list!
Next year, I'm moving to Germany to study masters degree, from Türkiye. And this is my biggest dream now. I was supposed to be studying for my finals now, but after entering UA-cam, now I have a new study of planning the trip in a little advance :) Very nice journey!
Hahaha no no no procrastination, trip planning comes after the finals! 😆
Winterthur switzerland, 120k, no tram. But double articulated trolleybuses on busy lines. 8 buses/h during peak hours. widest gap during off peak: 15‘. Good!
With that frequency it would be nice to have it steel wheels on steel rails though, but infrastructure is terribly expensive in Switzerland - and people are also quite nimby.
Hi Félix, very interesting topic and video. I think you will grow a big audience with such quality content. One small criticism I have: you made a lot of cuts in the video. Sometimes in the middle of your speech, which I found very distracting. I think your speaking style doesn't go well with these quick cuts. Personally, I am more than willing to listen to you for another 5 minutes in this video. Keep it up and I'm looking forward to your next video.
Thank you so much for your comment, I'm happy you found the video interesting! Indeed, I admit I was a bit sloppy about the jump cuts, I will try to do better and find a balance between cadence and distracting cuts. But I think this is something that I can improve with a bit more practice and patience.
Fascinating video, Felix. Really well constructed & narrated. V-interesting subject matter too. Well done! Yours, Paul
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
10:07 Last Wagon: I quit I leave you now…

that's why it's called single wagon load. its a very heavy wagon i guess
It is often easier to run two locomotives for a short time, which is uneconomical, if they are needed together before or after, than to separate them. A lot of time is often spent coupling them, as the multiple control is then activated.
@@thomasnovacek4686 yes absolutely. Probably it was just an empty locomotive that got some load assigned in operations.
Transportiereds würkli öpfel mit dem? :D
ich muss mich mal selbst fact checken...
What looks really big gap in efficiency is coupling method used for cargo trains in a lot of old EU countries.
You’re absolutely right. I think one of my coming videos will be about how we got in this sad situation and how to fix it… possibly
In La Chaux de Fonds wird es auf Schmalspur praktiziert!
Das stimmt, nach La Chaux de Fond fährt täglich ein ganzer Zug von Glovelier mit Kehrricht aus dem Delémont Tal
I would have never expected it to be a mainly Swiss system, as it is so common here. Also, I pretty confused by the English accent. It is more sounding like Swiss-german, but most of your sources/footage are from Swiss-french parts... 🥲🤷♂ Or I'm simply a dumass that think everything revolves around him 🤦♂
It’s probably not Swiss. I think from what I read it was common in the Netherlands and in Luxembourg as well. You have good ears, I’m from French speaking Switzerland but I have a German origin, hence the accent in English
I heard that the line besancon-le locle is now being renovated by SNCF, but they choose specifically to keep the line on diesel locos so that SNCF does not get any competition! What a shame....
thats neat
We need more direct rail connections to industry. In Austria, we only have 1 sector that uses it and that's a steal work.
Agreed, private connections by sidings are still the most efficient approach for freight. But also in Switzerland we struggle with it because of the lack for space for facilities
ACTS Nederland BV was a Dutch railroad company. The abbreviation originally came from "Afzet Container Transport Systeem" (Disposal Container Transport System). On February 5, 2011, the operations were continued by Husa. The company was founded in 1989 for the purpose of the Disposal Container Transport System.
