    At last!!! Amazing how you pronounce turkish words correctly! (I am not turkish, but I know this language).
    I travelled by train from Europe to Istanbul before Yugoslav war, one time using the sleeper Munich-Istanbul. Its look was much similar to today's sleeper, but had no AC.

    Great video! Teşekkürler! This really makes me want to explore Turkey by train, even more so since it is included in Interrail (well, not the sleeper trains I guess)

      It's definitely worth a journey - but train journeys are so cheap that I'm not certain whether Interrail makes sense here. Most of the trains have to be reserved in advance as demand is often higher than the capacity. I will soon make a video explaining the Turkish network a bit better and how to book train tickets 😊

    Great video and great review! Also prior to the reconstruction of the railway between Istanbul and Sakarya in 2012, the Ankara Express was one of several overnight trains operating daily between Istanbul and Ankara. The others were Anadolu Express and Fatih Express, each of which were discontinued in 2012. I am quite glad that the Ankara Express was brought back as TCDD is slowly phasing out classic intercity service between Istanbul and Ankara.
    Cheers!

      Thanks for your comment!
      I agree. Mainline trains and High-Speed trains can complement each other very well. Unfortunately, the Ankara Ekspresi sleeper cars are almost always empty, probably because of the price. With the alternative High-speed trains and busses, Istanbul Ankara isn't that attractive anymore - but the high-speed line could make other products more interesting. For example, what about an Istanbul - Izmir sleeper using the Istanbul - Eskişehir High-speed line when it will be finished?

    • @masrod94
      @masrod94 3 роки тому +2

      @@felixonrails I agree that Istanbul-Izmir overnight service would be nice! Perhaps TCDD could get some new trainsets (similar to the wonderful new NightJet sets in Austria) and operate the Istanbul-Eskisehir section on the HSR, then reverse direction at Eskisehir and continue to Izmir as a conventional train. Or better yet, TCDD could build a direct HSR from Istanbul to Izmir, branching off at Gebze, then crossing the Gulf of Izmit via a rail tunnel. Lots of potential!

    • @erdemcebisoglu2243
      @erdemcebisoglu2243 2 роки тому +1

      @@masrod94 By the way this train could be go to Izmir without reversing direction. Because Enveriye station was already builded for this reason

    Ankara's old station is nicely preserved and maintained. The high gloss polished wood trim takes me back to another era before metal and plastic became the norm.

    • @felixonrails
      @felixonrails  2 роки тому

      Ankara station is really beautiful, and it's also quite particular for Turkish railways. Many older stations are from Ottoman times and built by or following German, French or English plans. In Ankara, the former station of German was demolished times and replaced by something very specific to the early Kemalist Republic. This is why it differs so much to for Example Sirkeci in Istanbul, Basmane in Izmir or many others

    I love that all TCDD night trains are set up in day-use mode all the time. So when you are ready to sleep you can convert them to beds. Most other European night rains (excluding OBB) have their setup to beds already, even if the journey starts at midday, so you will be uncomfortable the whole way

    • @felixonrails
      @felixonrails  29 днів тому +1

      I agree, both TCDD couchettes and sleepers can be folded whenever you want, and that’s really helpful compared to other setups that you can’t change at all, or where you need an UIC key to unlock the bench
