    Hey, thanks for your content. Couple of questions if I wanted a multi purpose gym (for strength work) everyday casual wear and then shorter 5-10k would you buy the racer 2 or the 4 ? I’m thinking maybe the racer? Also have you heard any info about the new ego flo midsole ? Be good to know if they plan to roll it out across all the FWD / 4mm range - can you get any info?

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller 5 днів тому

      @@amandaball7116 I'd prefer the Escalante 4 for multi-purpose. The Racer's upper isn't great for casual use imho. The Ego Flo is a supercritical foam, which is supposed to be very lightweight and cushioned. And the FWD Via will be the first to use it. So far no reports on others models or versions, but I'll keep my eyes open! Unfortunately, I won't be testing the FWD Via, as it's with 4mm drop, so I'll need to wait to see if they'll use it on any model that I'm interested in 😅

    There are quite a lot negative posts about the Lone Peak 8 on YT. I didn't watch them before but now I have ordered the LP 8's and ran on them today I get a bit insecure and a little bit scared because I Want to run on them in the Czech hills next week. I understand the LP 8 do not perform that well in wet conditions, I also experience my toes (narrow feet) swimming in the front of the shoes (and that gave you inbalance at going down hill?), and last there is this durability issue. Can't send them back now, while I ran on them. In my country (Netherlands) you can't buy them in a shop, as far as I know. Didn't you speak Dutch, by the way? These are my first pair of trailrunning shoes. I normally walk in barefoot shoes.

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller 5 днів тому

      We mustn't forget that the LP is Altras best selling shoe, so although they get a lot of criticism online, they're still a cult favourite. 🤘🏻 In January Altra will release the LP9+ with Vibram outsole for better traction if wet surfaces. And yes, I was born in NL and lived there for 20 years before moving to Germany 😊

    I'm in no way a hardcore runner but this is my exp w/ the shoes so far. ~900km w/ OG racer(retired) - heel slip when doing tempo/threshold - more ground feel, sometimes too harsh when doing long runs in pure concrete. My feet definitely feel the discomfort after the ~18-20km mark - lighter than the racer 2 ~65km w/ racer 2(used in all my runs) - surprisingly, I have yet to experience heel slip on any of my tempo/thresholds so far - definitely more forgiving than the OG racer. I don't know why. While the ground feel is still there, the impact to the ground is more softer than the OG. - tighter/slimmer toe box? This I'm not sure why since someone in reddit compared both racers and both have the same insole sizes/shapes. So, could be the upper knit of the shoe(?) Hopefully they'll address the difference of weight in the next update or at least for their new pairs, and for the next version, they'll take the - sole(they're the same based on altra's website so idk why the different ground feel), ok w/ either tho I prefer the OG racer's - heel area of racer 2 - the mid and toe area of the OG racer. - less tight upper of the OG racer

  • @ThomasHuayra
    @ThomasHuayra 7 днів тому

    I was wondering if you use this shoe on road surface, don't the lugs wear off quickly? Cause the contact surface is small due to the lugs and you do point out the heel lugs are indeed wearing off quite noticably for 70 km.

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller 7 днів тому

      @@ThomasHuayra I was wondering about the same thing. My guess is, because the lugs are shaped like flat diamonds, which helps distribute the runner's weight more evenly across the surface. This design might mean that no single lug takes the brunt of the impact, potentially reducing the rate of wear compared to more aggressive lugs with sharper edges. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Interesting......... My experience of the Vanish Carbon 2 has been completely different.......... I absolutely love the unstructured heel, also love the fact that the toebox height is greater than normal and does not cause blisters on the top of my toes. The foam and stack height makes for a super comfy shoe, ran a 3h17 marathon as my 2nd use of the carbons with absolutely no comfort or blister issues. For me, this is the best shoe made by Altra since the Torin4's (Torin4's also had an unstructured heel box). By contrast I've had to cut away parts of the heel or ankle areas of my Torin 6's and my Vanish Tempo's as their hard/stiff ankle boxes dig into my ankle bones. Other than that the Vanish Tempo's are a great shoe (which would be better with an unstructured heel)....pity that you say they are not going to release a new Vanish Tempo, as I was hoping the tempo would become my replacement for the Torins going forward. Torin7 heel and ankle structure is so heavy and rigid they hurt my feet even to walk in them in the shop, so I'm not buying the Torin7's. On the Vanish Tempo's my other mod, was to punch laceholes into the lacing tabs and lace like a conventional shoe, which made the shoe MUCH more comfortable and easier to lace up. The lace loops built into the tempo uppers just did not work for me. Back to the Vanish Carbon2 .........absolutely awesome shoe. I ran the 90km Comrades Marathon in the Vanish Tempo's after above mentioned mods, and they were great except for very slight blisters on top of small toes. The Vanish Carbon 2's are easily my shoe of choice for Comrades 2025. I just hope that Altra keep on making shoes like this.

    Got rid of mine quite quickly. The comfort is nowhere near the previous version, mainly because of the badly designed toe bumper-it flexes _into_ my big toe joint. Additionally, it feels heavier on the foot (maybe that's the result of increased stiffness). A major disappointment. Got another pair of Timp 4s instead.

      I think the Timp 5 is a great choice for casual use. I wear the Timp 5 Hiker daily and love them. I primarily use them on pavement and the lugs have started to wear down, but not to a point of concern yet. I'd imagine the regular Timp 5 will be similar.

    Hey TD! Do you have any recommendations for an Altra shoe suitable for hard surface? All daily training, leading into some big mileage ultras, all on concrete. Probably need some cushioning for such a hard surface (think multiday events)... I grabbed the Torin 5 a couple years back thanks to one of your videos, really liked it, but then it was discontinued. Tried the Torin 6 and didn't like it.

      I'm also having a hard time finding a good alternative after the Torin 5. That was probably one of the best Torins imho. Since then, I've switched to the Rivera (4), despite it being slightly less wide. Other options are if course the Via Olympus 2, Experience Flow or the to-be-released FWD Via. All 3 aren't in my shoe rotation though.
