Hi from Altra aficionados. Thanks for your review. Im waiting for the Timp 5 Gore Tex, cause I bought Timp4 in December, and got only few first runs in them.
Just got the Timp 4 for my first trail race and they were great! Lots of people slipping and even falling on rocks but I only had some ankle roll scars but never completely injured. Got them thanks to your review, please keep at it
I returned mine. Biggest issue was the reinforced part at the lower part of the laces sits lower than on other Altras and it digged into the top of my foot. I agree that overall the shoe feels stiff, but also of real good quality.
Great review as always. Completely agree, I feel the Timp4 are much more comfortable and forgiving. Also it annoys me they went back to the perforated thin numb insole which makes it quite harsh compared to Torin 7 which is now just so comfy you want to sleep in it ☺️
So glad I bought a second pair of Timp 3s that are fresh in the box and ready to go when my current pair wears out. The 3rd Gen was perfect - basically a Lone Peak with more cushion. They can tackle anything - dirt, mud, rocks, tarmac. The Timps have now gone to the standard footshape rather than the original like they used to be. Altra needs to focus up and remeber what made them popular. All of their shoes should be original footshape.
Great update … unfortunately they didn’t work for me - my feet are wider and they annoyingly rubbed and blistered … shame as nearly there ! Just picked up some new Olympus 5 instead now.. Update vid coming soon
You ever thought about reviewing Topo shoes too? I just got the Topo Magnifly road shoe (zero drop) and MTN Racer 3 (5mm drop) which I'll be reviewing soon. I'm also looking forward to running in the Altra Timp 5 which seem nicely updated! The rebuilt upper and a Vibram outsole seem to be exactly what was needed. The gusseted tongue is 'gusseted' oddly IMO, but overall, it seems like a well thought-out shoe. We'll see if my toes have the same issue. Great review and feedback!
Hey Chad! I've thought about it, but kinda decided against it. They're not very common here in Germany, and because their zero drop offer is so limited, I'm not really interested in spending the money. I've reached out to them without success, but perhaps that's a good thing. I try to get as much wear in my shoe rotation as possible, so I can be brutally honest as I can, and adding more brands will make that harder 😅
Thanks for the video! Good review! For mud surfaces Inov8 Mudclaws or even X-Talon are excellent - the logs are 8mm deep and made or a very sticky rubber. I still prefer Vibram Megagrip outsoles (maybe a bit more aggressive than this one on the Timp's), my favourite is the outsole of the Topo Athletic - very versatile and effective on a lot of surfaces. By the way, the runner loop is a good idea for the issue with your toes - it does help!
Thanks for the review, I’ll skip the Timp and maybe go for the Superior, Olympus or Mont Blanc. Hopefully the MB also have issues and will make my selection even easier :)
That upper is going to fall apart anytime soon, but good luck ! I'm going straight for the Mont Blanc Carbon and am happy with my regular Mont Blancs. Cheers !
Hi, I am just about to try Altra . Regarding your request about mud shoes , I would urge you to try the Inov8 Mud-Talon speed . Cracking of a setup , zero drop, roomy toe box, very good grip . Admittedly, on the harder sole support, but a must-have in your collection.
Inov8 do an excellent zero drop shoe, the trailfly 270, but they’re similar to the Lone Peak in intention so not a mud shoe. They did more zero drop and “barefoot” shoes a few years ago but not any more
i just got mine ... will be sending them back, sadly! i was hoping they will tick all the boxes! they feel so stiff, my underfoot still hurts after wearing them for few mins! also the tongue felt weird, was rubbing too much. I love love loan peak 7 ! they tick all the boxes apart from: very slippery on the mud! i live in the south of england and recent runs been a nightmare! saying that i done 50 km race on the north downs two weeks ago and they were fine. i will be wearing them for my 50 miler in April! I am a massive fan of Altras therefore I want to invest in another pair of trail shoes: i am not having any luck! I thought Timp will be perfect something between Olympus and mont blanc ... I have not try Olympus but from I've red they will be way to cushion for my liking! how about Mont Blanc? could they be the one?? I am heading to Chamonix in July so would love to perhaps have slightly more 🗻friendly shoes than loan peak 7! if anyone have any ideas pls share :)
I also find the Timp to be very stiff and was positively surprised to feel that the MB Carbon to be a lot more flexible. However, it's a pricey pair of running shoes. Might be worth a try?
@@TheKam81 I really liked them despite the heel slip issues and laces. Definitely a fun shoe to run in, although I've read so many people hating them, I find it hard to recommend them 😅 I ran a 50k in the original version and a 65k on the BOA version, and they got me through them beautifully.
Noticed the same with Timp 5's as well as the Via Olympus. I am already sizing a full size up and my toes still feel under pressure after walking. Why is this? Like you, the Lone Peaks do not have this issue.
I can only imagine it has something to do with the stiffness and rocker geometry lone peak is fairly flexible and barely any rocker due to its low profile.
@@TDMiller thank you! What would be your suggestion to have something like the lone peak but mid/high and waterproof? I found that the lone peaks are only moderately rain repellent, but not really waterproof... and actually the lone peak is already a bit too cushioned for me. I checked online, according to the specs, the Olympus 6 hiker is probably even more cushioned, so not sure what to look for. What do you think? Other brands would be fine as long as it's wide toebox and available in the EU
@@danielfulop I'm afraid only the Olympus is as wide as the Lone Peak. Despite the extra stack, the Olympus is still rather firm underfoot. They're a little too bulky for my liking, so Timp is kinda ideal for me.
I got a minute I’m more of a minimal lower stack height runner, but I went to REI and I tried these on walked around the store for a little bit. No reason they didn’t go home with me. They felt great was cause I was broke so but I see different other places have deals on them like running to their house and stuff so I’m gonna look around they even for somebody else used to real thing the guy let me run around the store with them and they felt really good I my feet are too small and narrow for the Pretty original fit. That’s why long peak doesn’t really do me too well, but these really feel good kind of felt like the Riviera, which I thought was your best fitting shoe for the trails or something really good of my running Luna sandals, cause they got mega Crip and these have the mega grip too, and looks good. They look really good they I’ll buy a pair or maybe not.
How protective is it underfoot against rocks, since it doesn't have a rock plate? I find the Lone Peak to allow rocks to poke through too much for my liking.
I’ve tried already on in the store but never owned any. The Olympus is way too wide in the forefoot but the torin seems to be fine on the width. Are these wide like the Olympus?
@@TDMiller I'm deciding between Olympus 5, which I can have for 100 and timp 5 for 150 I want them for running, walking and gentle hiking, I've never had an altra
@@tomasstansky560 in that case, I'd go for the Olympus 5. They're more comfortable, especially for hiking. The 6 will be released some time this summer, so that's why they're on discount.
Good question. I feel the MB has a more aggressive rocker geometry, which I like, however I prefer the Vibram Megagrip outsole of the Timp 5 over the Vibram Litebase outsole of the MB. I'd take MB out for race day and the Timp for long training runs.
The large heel pull on the Timp 4 was the all-time best. Easy to not tie my laces and just pull the shoe on. Every over model of Timp (2, 3 and now 5) has an inferior heel pull. I was disappointed to see this regression in the new model. Also, I'm not a fan of the colorways yet. For Timp 4s, they kept adding a new one every 6 months or so. I hope that happens again here.
I wouldnt know why not! They wide enough for my feet. Backyard ultras have the benefit of not needing to be the fastest. So I think these could actually be a good choice. I've seen a few negative reviews already on the footshape, so I guess that's something personal for each runner.
HI TD thx for your review but sorry but I disagree as the T5 doesn't have those drainage holes in the midsole it mush contribute to the T5 being firmer as those holes in the T4 are both towards the outsole and the side of the midsole. Will be more interesting to see how the T5 compare to the new Olympus 6 and if it will still have that exposed midsole that everyone has complained about, if not the only difference could be the stack hight.
Always watch your reviews and my go to for Altra's. Well done my friend.
I sincerely appreciate that! You just made my day 🙏🏻 all I want is that my videos are helpful or somehow useful to others. 🤘🏻
Hi from Altra aficionados. Thanks for your review. Im waiting for the Timp 5 Gore Tex, cause I bought Timp4 in December, and got only few first runs in them.
The upper strangely pressed down on the top of my big toe knuckle. Extremely painful. Had to return. 😞

Altra’s King Mt soles are pretty good in mud and snow. I wish they would make a timp model with them.

The best Vibram sole for mud would probably be the Peak Distict, which was designed pretty much for fell running here in the uk
Where do you get this peak district vibram sole?
