    I've never bothered with deadheading wildflowers in my yard, but I will now with lupins. You don't need many flower heads going to seed to produce a massive number of them, one stem left at the end of the year should do it. Never occurred to me to remove browning flowers, from the bottom up, as a form of deadheading.

    We have Lupines up and down our freeways and back roads…this year is the most I have ever see. Makes being stuck in traffic ease the anxiety as rush hour seems to be from sun up to sun down. I did plant seeds early spring but didn’t mark them and I think the landscapers sprayed them thinking they were weeds. I am going to try again in the fall and put something around them so the landscapers don’t accidentally pull or spray them…same with my zinnias and cosmos …. I am just kicking myself for not marking them. I never had landscapers before, my husband hired them after my arm and hand surgery …so I’m not used to having to communicate what I’ve got going on in my beds. I really would prefer to do it myself but hopefully soon….because it’s stressful having someone else in your garden killing all your hard work, time and money. …not their fault but a learning curve for me.

      Lupin seeds are very hard...try scoring them, then soaking them in water before planting. The other thing you can do is start them in pots. I have them growing naturally, along with columbine. Both have very long tap roots so, if you're going to transplant, be sure to get that whole root (to the tip). If you're taking seeds from plants, make sure they're 'ripe', shake them into a paper bag. I never move a plant that's bloomed, the roots will be too long to bother attempting it, same with columbine. I move them when they're tiny seedlings, the root is usually as long as what you see growing above ground. I deal with powdery mildew by cutting off the leaves as soon as I see it happening, the plant doesn't seem to mind and it continues to grow new leaves. I didn't do that one year and my whole yard turned into mildew, including my hanging baskets. I leave the flower heads for reseeding. Columbine are my favourite and they're easier to grow. Neither plant is a perennial, lupins are bi-annuals which explains why some years are more spectacular than other. I have a lot of wildflowers (aka weeds) in my yard, it's what I encourage, don't have to water them. Western wallflower is another, have some incredible pics with butterflies on them..... My mother-in-law has the same problem with her gardener...they have some obvious differences of opinion when it comes to what should be growing in the garden. Some of the looks I see on his face are pretty funny....like, "lady, are you crazy"....he never says anything, she wins in the end, but not always without a struggle

      @@jaygray7102 Thank you for the tips! I did find 1 lupine coming up yesterday. I have had success moving columbine and dividing them in fall. Usually the smaller ones. I also collect the seeds in the fall and scatter where I want them. I will try scoring the Lupine seeds and soaking method and put in containers I did not realize Lupines had long tap roots. I knew they were biennials. I have foxgloves and delphiniums throughout and for some reason I struggle keeping the pink delphiniums going but I have quite a few of the dark and light blues, they do really well in my zone 8b PNW. Have a great weekend and thanks again for the tips!

    • @jaygray7102
      @jaygray7102 Місяць тому

      @@tinaknutsen Love delphiniums, just don't have much luck with them. I live in a mountainous area where the soils virtually nonexistent, means I have to bring it in just to watch it wash away with the snow in spring, hence my preference for wildflowers. We had almost none last year after a brutal winter, no hummingbirds either....they're all back this year. I heard a chirping early spring and thought "I recognize that sound"..... then ZING, I swear I could feel my hair move and thought "that's just a little too big to be a mosquito". I've known other people who've had success dividing columbine, I just find it too much work so I let them go to seed in the fall. I didn't know about the tap root when I first divided them, I do now but I still can't be bothered....not when they're coming up everywhere on their own. I have to pull them out of my driveway and that's nothing but gravel and rock....I give them to friends or move them. Happy gardening...🙂

    How do I get mine to produce flowers? The leaves are beautiful but there’s no evidence of flowers. I should add I’m in zone 9b, I planted from seed after amending the soil, mixing in some (I think it’s called) perlite for drainage. I have them in a spot that is a mix of sun and shade, depending on time of day. I love Lupines and really want them to bloom. I planted the seeds last year, this year got gorgeous leaves, have had about six plants grow from the seed. I read that amending with coffee grounds is a good way to get flowers, that didn’t help.

    • @KellyandDoug

      It sounds like you really have worked hard to get your Lupines to grow. So I will try my best to get them to flower for you. I like to suggest tomato feed once a week. This should produce a flower stem within a few weeks. coffee grounds are quite good for putting slugs and snails off eating your plants. So keep going with the coffee. Please get back to me in 4 weeks and let me know what is going on. Thank you for the comment and good luck

    I threw down some wildflower seeds last year and this year an absolutely massive lupine grew. 6-7x bigger than the plants you showed. So large the stems started bending over and seed pods were EVERYWHERE. Is this a different species of lupine? It looks like crazy and chaotic mess right now. I didn’t know you dead head as it flowered so it’s pretty much done for the year I think. I’m collecting the seeds now. Any suggestions on what to do next year? To maybe keep it from getting so massive? It’s 3.5-4 feet tall.

    • @KellyandDoug
      @KellyandDoug Рік тому

      Hi thanks for the comment. There are many types of lupines so working out the precise type might be hard. Another thing that is going to be difficult is making it any smaller without losing a lot of flowers. If it's flopping over due to strong winds a cane might help. If it is flopping due to drought then more water. Normally lupines are OK but the bigger the plant the bigger the water loss. If you dry the seeds out and then throw them in a bucket with some top soil, once mixed then throw them in your wild flower border ideally after everything has been cut down and rain is on its way. hopefully some of the seeding will turn out to be a little more compact. However if they are still just as big you have a whole wall of colour in a year or 2 so it's a big win either way. Well done on your amazing lupines and I hope this helps!

      I think you're right. I went to college there about 30 years ago and I can barely tell any difference either.

      Hi thanks for the comment . I know it's not the most positive comment we have ever had. But free speech is important and if someone takes the time to leave a comment it should be appreciated.

      @kellydoug8817 a customer of mine owns the same ego kombi tool with a 500mah battery pack. I'll make a video in the new year to compare a Stihl KM131 brush cutter, hedge cutter and pole pruner against your delicate Ego just to illustrate my point.

      Eh being a professional in maintenance does not guarantee quality work by any means. It depends on the job you are looking to achieve. I have a farm so I need something sturdy for that, but this looks great for gardening.
