Batteries in effect pedals. Can you hear a difference?
I use the GA-SC10 or 12 (prefer the 12) in my amps and builds. It sounds like the old Chicago Jensen speakers or the best of the Oxford units. That is the sound that was impressed in my early listening. These speakers are good to great on everything and not bad on anything. I like the balance across frequencies and they are not muddy or harsh. There were a lot of good choices. Some of them are slightly better on a particular clip but they give it back somewhere else.
The Celestion G10R Ten 30 and the Eminence GA10-SC64 are almost identical, but very different in price.
Thanks for your work! I did quiet a little speaker comparsion in my princeton I had and the Fender Custom Vibrolux 68 which has two of the Ten 30 in it. After all I left the Ten 30 in it because I thought it had the best all around usable sound. It does sound and respond really similar to the 1058K Alnico which became famous in the 90´s area Fender tweed amps. Watching your video let me come to the same conclusion. Which is astonishing. Tells a lot about the accuracy of your recording skills in this comparsion. I came to the conclusion that we can absolutely trust Fender. Quiet obviously they select what reflects what would have been in there in the specific time period the model represents. What would in this case most likely be a Pyle or a Utah ceramic speaker in 68. BTW lower priced speakers are not cheap because they are worse than others in any way. It is the other way around. They became cheaper because companies use them in large quantity which influences the cost. Same with the Celestion 70/80 which is n´t a bad speaker AT ALL in my opinion. It does outperform many Celestions in a specific way.
I like the Warehouse 10c/s and the C-Gold... Another one that you should try in the Princeton is the WGS ET-10.....
Stay away from the celestion g10 vintage.....they are not 10 inch versions of the v30. And they sound terrible....please take my advice and dont make the same mistake i did. The g10 creambacks are much much better
Surprised I heard a difference with just 2 caps, and at that am also surprised the last 3 lined up with my expectations.
Great Video,🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I'll give this a few more listens, but whoever picked the ten30 during the factory test runs knew what they were doing. To me, the Green and Ten30 had some brother sister vibes, just slightly different but in the same henced or prominent range. The other thing to consider during all of the shootouts is how your ear will adjust a bit to what you get used to. If you put the Gold in there and played that for quite some time, maybe it would start to sound normal to you. Probably digging too deep hear!! The best thing to do is to just hear one that sounds good to you after listening 10-20 times and just run with it. I'd run that Ten30 and call it a day. What have you stuck with after these 3 months?
For those considering a purchase: I’ve been using these captures on my Quad Cortex for a couple of months now and, for guitar, the Aphek Princeton and Astoria captures are now my go to. Both are very different, covering a lot of ground, but both sound surprisingly ‘real’ without the digital splats and gurgles one sometimes hears in a capture. The Princeton with a Strat in position 2 or 4 is so spanky, clean and immediate - yet smooth (think early Knopfler) - that it has turned me into a Princeton fan after not really understanding the Princeton fuss beforehand. I’ve also found that I’m using less effects with Greg’s captures as, I think, I am investing less tweak-time into making them sound good. Add a bit of reverb and subtle delay and I’m good to go!
Great Video thanks It could be me or UA-cam but I really can not hear the difference. I really want to buy a Les Paul 59 with P90's but after watching your video and many others I really can not jusify the price of a new guitar when I already have a Les Paul Delux Gold Top with mini Humbuckers. As I said it could be me but all guitars really sounds the same, and when put through pedals your really taking the pickups out the pcture (not saying you used pedals) I will point out that I do have a massive colllection which I love everyone of them, just for the people that think I maybe a troll lol. Thanks aagin for a great video and you may have saved me $5500au or maybe not 🤣
Very Subjective... they all sound good to me but all a bit different. Warehouse were most appealing to me, and the Ten 30 sounded the clearest while using distortion. Amazingly they all sounded similar while clean. Great vid!
i like you and the Warehouse G10C/S and ive been thinking a princeton for years.
The Epiphone is a Weber Sig 8 Ceramic and I think it sounds best.
I thought I would like the Greenbacks but I liked the Celestion and Jensen Alnico speakers best.
I like the 1058 the best
Great post. Clean the 12” speakers had more information, and sounded better to my ear. Distorted, the 10” speakers had a tighter, more focused sound. Definitely different from each other.
Another excellent video. Appreciate your time.
A nice technical comparison. Definetely deserves a subscription.
Not legend; truth. Or Clapton, Walsh, Lage, and countless other artists had bad producers 😊. The Epiphone speaker sounded best to me, but all would work except for the Celestion, which I didn’t care for at all. The Eminence, Weber, and WGS were all great and easily obtained.
Well done! I like a combo of the Celestion Gold and a wGS G10C/S in a 77 Vibrolux. About to A/B vs. a closed back Tremolux cab with Weber Alnico 10A125s - to your point, less sensitive speakers for more amp grind. On these speakers I may have missed it, but was there a break-in period, or were they straight out of the box? Really well done. thank you!
Thanks. Yes, they’d all been broken in. All ones I’d owned for a number of years. Nothing unused.
Warehouse c/s or Celestion Gold
Those Suntan caps, if infused with Pseudonaja textilis lipid filtered down to 5 micron, sonically outperforms capacitors 50 times its price!
Great vid bro.
Alnico Gold, then G10C/S for me and the Vibrolux cab. Didn't expect to dislike the Greenbacks.
They all sound great. What's the 'generic' from the epiphone? Is that from the combo? I bought the amp/speaker bin new. Pretty sure it has a 10" Eminence driver. It sounds beautiful.
Out of an Epiphone Valve Jnr. Generic, only as it doesn’t have any brand markings. I assume made in China, but that’s just a guess.
@aphekrecordingstudio4274 . The combo, yeah? I'm looking at mine right now. It's not the combo, it's the amp/speaker bin version. It's still got it's tag that says 'Eminence inside '. Thanks for the vid. Excellent!
@@markbryant4641 Okay. This one doesn’t say anything. Also an 8” speaker. You’d think Eminence would be a selling point, which is why I assumed Chinese manufacture.
The WGS G8C works well in my 74 Champ and takes overdrive pedals without getting muddy cheers !!BTW plug a champ into a 1/12 cabnet for a big surprise you will be suprised how loud 5 watts can be !😊
Greg excelentes tus videos! Comparto todas tus apreciaciones, tengo un mc924 con selectora de mics y quería preguntarte si podría reemplazarla por un potenciómetro de balance, de ser así qué potenciómetro debo instalar? No he encontrado hasta el momento ningún dato específico. Muchas gracias!
I assume you mean replacing the pickup selector switch, with a blend control? (I’m using the auto translate). A dual 500k blend pot is what they used, starting in ‘82. I installed one for a friend and it works well.
Gracias Greg!
Just realised I meant to say Tweed Deluxe, not Deluxe Reverb, at 5:10. Sorry for any confusion. Deluxe Reverb, uses a Long Tail Phase Inverter.
Funnily enough I could barely tell the two Warehouse or the several Celestions apart in the clean samples. Listening through my HiFi (it took me some time deciding which speakers to listen to speakers through!😆) I heard some weird frequency on the Eminence GA10-SC64 speakers in the first clean samples. The final sustained chord either makes my speakers or the actual sample speaker vibrate in a very undesirable way.
You heard correctly. There was an ugly something going on in that Eminence. Interestingly, it went after making some full volume amp captures, where they really push the amps/speakers to the maximum levels, as part of the process. Very little difference between some of them clean. Overdrive definitely brings out the differences.
@@aphekrecordingstudio4274 Went away permanently? How odd. The final part of breaking in perhaps or maybe shook something loose; a handful of screws stuck on the magnet maybe. 😃 Yes it's definitely when overdriven harmonics start to colour the scene that some speakers begin to take flight and others flap and wither.
@@goodbyepolarbears172 I can’t explain it really, other than that something settled down or realigned. It’s the speaker I’d been using for about 5 years in the Princeton and the amp had often been turned right up. I had initially just thought the amp had very little clean headroom, as you only heard it, when completely clean. I knew the dirt was there, but it disappeared in a track and other than the odd practice session, it was always being used with a band. My first amp, was a Peavey Decade (bought new in ‘81). I sold my first bass to the guy around the corner and let him borrow that amp. I’d never used the Peavey for bass and it came back with the speaker distorting. A while later, the downstairs of our house, where my gear was, flooded, in a massive storm and the amp sat in water, for a couple of hours, that was about half way up the 8” speaker. After it dried out, the distortion went away! 🤔
@aphekrecordingstudio4274 Careful there Greg. The suggestion that you can clean up the distortion in your speakers by rinsing them in water could spread throughout the internet like wildfire🧯😄. They'll all be trying it! Oh well, if they must I guess it would be advisable to TAKE THEM OUT OF YOUR COMBO FIRST! 😆
@@goodbyepolarbears172 Well. it was a 50% soak of around half the speaker (if you're taking notes). Unfortunately, not knowing or expecting the improvement (and being 15), I didn't measure it. I didn't get that choice to remove it from the cab. I was on the way to school. Not that we made it, as all the roads were flooded. Amazingly the particleboard Peavey cab, didn't swell up! Could that be the key? Submerge it, while still screwed onto the baffle. We could be onto something! 🤫
I did this experiment with 2 5 position rotary switches with Mallory, Orange drops, all the way up to Jensen foil in oil caps. The amp was an el84 strapped to triode mode. 2 gain stages and no tone control. Everyone who blind tested found either the cheapest Mallory or the most expensive Jensen caps sounded the beat. 1$ verses 35$.
I agree. The Mallory are as good as any of them.
Losing the master is good. The .001 is good but I would use a disk cap. After working on Fenders for 25 years, I found the output transformer makes the biggest difference between SF & BF. The larger transformer has less primary resistance to make more power, but the larger core has more inductance that throws a wet blanket on the tone. It also gives much more bass response, contributing to muddy tone. This makes players turn down the bass control and that ruins the Fender shimmer. I use 2.2uF on the V1 cathodes for best BF results.
Have you seen Part 2? The lead dress made a significant difference. I have now changed some of the preamp tubes, that were on their way out (didn’t want to change them during the videoing, being another variable). I have reduced the first cathode bypass cap on my Princeton and a Tweed Champ. I’ve been wondering about the output transformer? Excluding the 135 watt ultralinear versions, I couldn’t find anyone who had a strong view on them. Best I found was ‘they may have decreased in quality’. 🤔 I assume you’re talking about using the original 85 watt version? Thanks, Greg ua-cam.com/video/TQydfFjSa1o/v-deo.html
@@aphekrecordingstudio4274 I'm not a guitar player. I'm a tech who came in the musician's back door. So I can't play guitar when I'm done fixing them. So, I have been graphing amplifier performance after the repair for the last 20 years. It's not as much fun, but the numbers have finally given me their secrets. I have measured the increased power and bass across all the CBS models compared to Leo's. I bought an inductance meter to measure primary inductance and all of the had much more. An old Twin was 7 Henries. An ultralinear Twin is upwards of 19 Henries. Ask your friends what that would do for Bass response. Tim
@@rivertimefloats825 I know the ultra linear sound bad. I owned one for a year '85/'86. Have you measured these 100 watt models? This is what's been unclear. Nobody seems to have a definitive answer as to how much of a change there is between the and the'70s 100 watt models and the original 85 watt version.
@@aphekrecordingstudio4274 I have ten different Twin response curves. Is there a way to send them?
@@rivertimefloats825 that would be great. greg at aphekstudio dot com dot au Thanks. It’s also on the studio website.
The extra few % of performance with anything is always the hardest. Nice work Greg.
Thanks. Yes always the way, isn’t it. You can get 80% of the way there and it’s a bit jump to get the last 20%. It actually sounds even better back in its cab. There is a shielding plate, in the roof of the cab, the amp bolts against and it seems to get rid of even more of the muck. I’m almost positive at least one of the preamp valves needs replacing. A mate was here Friday night and it started getting noisy.
Did you change the white smaller electrolytic caps too? If not they would make a difference. I found significant improvements in many amp restorations I have done when the smaller value electrolytics that have aged and dried out get changed. It was a drastic change in a Silvertone 1483 I brought back from the dead. Thanks for the videos.
@@Zelleram55 I did and it this case no change in sound.
“The Astoria could be the Marshall for people who aren’t into Marshalls” 😁 Maybe that describes me. I have the Astoria pack for Quad Cortex from the Aphek website (along with a couple of others). Most Marshall captures I’ve tried have been a bit wooly or mushy to my ear, and with me playing, whereas these have enough clarity and bite that I’m actually using my tone knob to dial them into where I want them - not because I have to but because I can. I’d started to wonder if I just wasn’t a Marshall guy, but these are going to get a lot of use by me. At the other end of the spectrum, I’d also wondered what the deal with Princetons was, as the captures I’d tried sounded boxy and small, but the Greg’s Princeton captures with a Strat in position 2 or 4 is the Knophler clean tone I’d never been able to get to my liking. Something sounded more ‘real’ than the free ones I’d tried - similarly to how I felt when I first tried York Audio impulse responses, if that’s a helpful reference for anyone.
No difference.
They sound very very good.
These sound fantastic Greg.. I like the orange shirt..
I think that I'm hearing more plain clarity with the humbuckers, but with a little less 'life' than the P90's.
Good description. I like that.
Thanks, and great shirt!
😁 The shirt was a gift from my family.
Nice video. I like the early marshall jtm 45 tone. Did you use the 4x12 in any part of the video?
Thanks. No, I stuck with the stock cab for all the examples. So, the Oxfords in the closed cab.
That P10R is not the regular model. It's the P10R-FEN that was designed for removing the ice pick in the bormal P10R.
Great info! I have an early ‘64 “Tuxedo” Bassman, as well. I need to play around with the tone knobs a little more after watching this. Curious as to whether you changed values on or removed any caps or resistors in the bass channel?
Hi. No, mine is completely stock, other than the replaced electrolytic capacitors. I only used the Bass channel for bass, for many years, but love it for guitar. Completely different circuit, so they do respond a little differently.
As you saw, I discovered new sounds, making the video.
To my ears Greg there's very little difference if any at all between the two at least that's what I'm getting from the video source maybe the differences are clearer in a live setting?
You’re right. They are remarkably similar. Way closer than people expect.
Thank you very much for the video! I've been planning to build 5F1 myself and I think I'll go with Eminence with it. I really like that warm and round clean sound.
I have one, in one of my 2. Works well and rounds off some of the high end fizz.
Thank you very much for putting this together! I can hear some differences between 5 and 2. (3 for me sounded the same as 2) and 4 is a really good choice. I do have a 339 with A5 and must confess I do find them very bright. The questions here is: Do you think is worth spending the money at upgrading pickups?
Most interesting. I generally don't care for the "GOLDS". Thank You.
Excellent. I really enjoyed listening to this demonstration. Very Well Done. Thank You.
I liked the sound of the intro and can pass on the rest of the experiment
I bought my 1983 MC924 new in April of 1984. I was a senior in High School and my G&L L1000 had been stolen from a practice room in the Music Department. The school basically told me and my parents "Go pick out a bass"... The Musician was my choice. IIR the price was right at 1300.00 dollars, which would be a huge sum today. I love that bass.
Definitely worth doing to my ears. Tighter and more balanced, not to mention longevity extension with the new parts.
I like the Alunco Gold
