I was worried for a minute at the start.. I thought I wasn't going to get the "Hi, I'm Greg" fix 🙂It is great to hear the comparison. Maybe I should get these for my '80. I definately prefer these to the pickups in George..
Just before Greg posted this video, I bought an old Ibanez RS900 someone had pulled out of a wardrobe after years of being forgotten about for an absolute bargain. The main problem? The pickup was gone. In its place was a single, basic unnamed Jazz pickup surrounded by a 'scratch plate', an old rear cavity cover screwed in with a rectangle routed out... Needless to say, it didn't sound very good and it was VERY noisy. Ignoring the damage done to the finish, the real problem was finding a replacement pickup... Oh dear, original Super 4s are RARE! A few days later, I stumble upon this video somehow. I contacted Greg and purchased one as soon as I could. Now, I am not kidding when I say this pickup is fantastic! I've owned two RS900s in the past (And regretfully sold them due to the love of my G&L L2000) and I don't remember either of them sounding quite THIS good. And they both sounded great! The can't believe the timing of all of it, finding a top quality and cleverly designed reproduction of a long lost classic! Just before sorting out the Roadster, I had purchased a set of MFD L2000 pickups with full wiring from G&L for a different project. If I hadn't have already dropped $600 on them, I'd have gladly used to pair of Aphek Super 4s in it instead... Hindsight, eh?
I think it would be great to get rid of the noise when in the boost position. I can hear the difference between the Super 4 and the Aphek. I can hear a big difference in neck position but less of a difference in the bridge position. The Super 4 is cleaner. Thanks for the review of the bass. I have the MC924 1979. I love it. I think the BTB is a newer, CNC version of the MC924 (my opinion).
Interesting! I've always loved the 80s Musician's basses. the Aphek seem to have a noticeable boost in the low end, which i perceive as less clarity, even if probably the highs are quite similar.
I noticed that too and am considering a slight modification, to reduce the lows for the EA coil. They also have a slightly higher output, so it were hitting the amp harder, which also brought out some more lows. I matched the levels afterwards, but should have done it before recording.
