Thank you for inviting me into your home to share with you the first Briar-Side Christmas Tale! It has been recorded and edited to replicate an "Old-Time Radio" feel, and I sincerely hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did making it for you! It is a tale that rather beautifully contrasts premature expectations with the kind of gratitude that comes only with a more mature perspective. I ...

    What a wonderful video. I went through a phase where I was trying new tobacco after new tobacco but I found I really just love the old codger blends. My favorite is Prince Albert but lately I have Velvet coming in strong as a new 2nd favorite of mine.

    Just recently got into pipe smoking and love it! I’ve started off with the OTC codger brands. Only had a few like Captain Black and Half & Half. I just found a pouch of Velvet and think it’s my favorite so far. Not a fan of the smell in the pouch unlit, but really enjoy the smell and taste once lit in the bowl.

    We are missing you friend. Maybe you can post a short video! One 4 2024 . Tell us about a project while puffing . Ez going no need for a lot of prep. If you post I will go buy some more velvet! All I smoked last summer and it was a great experience. Unlike C&d you know what you are getting. I know after several iffy purchases I am pretty much buying tobacco’s that have been around a 50 year minimum., from now on.

    If you still check notifications, I feel like you’re the man to ask: What’s the fullest-flavored anise/licorice blend? Velvet and mixture 79 keep coming up, but perhaps you can help. The stronger, the better. Thanks!

      I think he is sadly no longer checks his social media/yt😢. I have tried most of the codger blends so I can give you my input, butI have not tried mixture 79 as I hear it's pretty bad tasting. Velvet and half&half both have anise/anisette and are very good, but they're pretty mild. Of all the codger blends I have tried none are very strong except for maybe 5 brothers, but it is not topped with anise. If you dont mind something more expensive I recommend trying fuseler's ration by hearth and home.

    I ordered a pouch of Velvet my previous order from cigars and pipes. I have to admit I was on the fence my first couple of bowls . I was starting to inch towards not liking it. So I backed off it for a day. When I went back to it, I found that it wasn’t that bad, and as the day progressed, it started to grow on me. I’m not sure I’d make this my go to every day blend , but it’s nice for a change of pace. I still have to give it the ultimate test.

    Thanks for your video… I find myself smoking CB Royal as my everyday go to blend. I used to get a house blend that was similar from a brick and mortar shop but because of the new regulations regarding flavored tobacco, he was unable to make it anymore. I tried Mixture 79 but was disappointed with it. I didn’t mind the taste, but I found it difficult to keep lit. There was so much topping sprayed on it that the sugar would melt then immediately harden the second the cool air hit it. I couldn’t deal with the constant relighting and it even got to a point where if you tamped it down it completely stopped the air supply into the pipe because you had this hardened shell of sugar and half burnt tobacco not allowing any airflow. I usually stick with aromatics, not a fan of English blends

    "...[A]nd so the day of the churchwarden is past..." The good Mr. Brown did not foresee the huge popularity of Professor J.R.R. Tolkien's novel "The Hobbit" and trilogy "The Lord of the Rings," both in printed and cinematic forms. The long-stemmed pipes featured in those works are in great demand, even by near-octogenarians such as myself. A great many pipe crafters are producing churchwardens of various materials--even corncobs by the Missouri Meerschaum Company--and some firms are making a specialty of them. Thank you so much for making this informative volume available to your public.

    • @theartfulcodger
      @theartfulcodger Рік тому

      You know, it may not be an OTC you settle on... and even if it is, it's just the end of a process! Figuring out what you like and settling down to enjoy it will always save you a ton of money going forward... even if you spent more than you expected to get there. Just be honest with yourself as you relax and take your time with your pipe. Understanding how much of the conversation out there is driven by people trying to sell you something or by others trying to justify their own gullibility and impulses is really key to freeing yourself up for genuine satisfaction and contentment with your own conclusions. Honesty and simplicity!

    Thank you for your video. I was a new pipe smoker and right away loved half and half. I watched many videos and tried a lot of different tobaccos but was getting aggravated that I didn't like the expensive tobaccos.i got so upset I quit all together. I saw my box of pipes and old tobaccos sitting in my closet a few months ago and decided to try again. I stuffed the pipe with half and half and boy was it good ( was in a Ball jar since 2019). Well since then I just consider myself a Half and Half pipe smoker and just sample other tobaccos. I ordered an oz of 20 different types. If I like a few fine, if not, fine I'll stick with Half and Half. But I agree with you thoughts on choosing tobaccos. I almost never smoked again because I THOUGHT I had to like a "premium" blend or many blends. I did find a few that I liked but nothing is even close to Half And Half for me.

    • @theartfulcodger
      @theartfulcodger Рік тому

      Your comment made my day, thank you. I think if more pipe smokers allowed themselves an honest look at things, and gave themselves, their pipes, and their tobaccos the time and practice they should... they'd find a simple truth they've all been missing and sincerely enjoy themselves and a warm bowl of tobacco so much more. Smoking a pipe is a fundamentally simple pastime and pleasure. Most of the complications imposed on it are by people who have something to prove or something to sell. You get it pal... and are free to enjoy a pipe the old-fashioned way. No stress. No pressure, no pretense... just the comfort of a warm pipe and a favorite blend. Much nicer this way, isn't it?
