An update to the previous video on installing "Devpac 3" an Amiga. I've found out some things that make the install make more sense and the reasons why the assembler was able to find .i files that don't seem to exist on my drive.

Installing Devpac 3 Assembler (Amiga 1200 Workbench 3.2)

In this video all I'm going to do is install "Devpac 3" an Amiga machine code assembler to the hard drive (or in this case and SD card to IDE drive). The reason I'm doing the video as it wasn't totally straight forward to get it going. It seems that back in the day, installing programs wasn't always a simple as just clicking the installer program and going to make a cup of tea, you had to do a ...

    This is a top class Assembler. I've been using it for several years on my Amiga 500, 1200, and 4000D. It's so easy to install and get started with. Plus, it tells you how to convert from other Assemblers, which honestly aren't much different, since the instruction set doesn't change on the 680xx processors, just the grammar/syntax in the assembler.

  • @ScoopexUs

    C is just as low level as Assembly, so probably the reason this seems like the hard way is that you're unfamiliar with using C for low level programming and at the same time refusing to use the OS functions provided? ;)

    Good luck on your Workbench adventures! I'm in sort of the same seat. I do recommend ClassicWB or MagicWB as it sets up some convenience methods and file association for you with included applications. If you have applications in sub-Drawers (folders) that you often start, you can put them on the main Workbench (desktop) with RMB > Icons > Leave Out. Then Snapshot the icon or Snapshot > All.

    Nice video! I'm a complete noob and capturing video seems straightforward enough (Console > OSSC > HDMI > Monitor > Display Capture in OBS), but how does capturing audio work in OBS? If I hook the 3.5mm to my headphones, will it be picked up in OBS? Or do you have to connect it to the computer? Sorry if this is a silly question!

    • @DavePoo2
      @DavePoo2 19 днів тому

      @@gheewilly8089 the HDMI output from the OSSC sends the sound as well as video, so OBS will capture both correctly. I use a capture device that has a HDMI pass through, so the video and sound go to OBS for capture and then the HDMI pass though output goes to the monitor so I can see it. The 3.5mm output is an additional output, and quite useful if your monitor doesn't have speakers in it (which mine doesn't).

    Why? Because the graphics chip in the Amiga was designed by the same genius that designed the graphics chip for the Atari 8-bit line of computers. It should have been the Atari Amiga but thanks to Jack Tramiel (yeah, thanks a lot Jack) Commodore snatched it away. I ended up with an Atari ST with a monochrome monitor and it got me through 3 1/2 years of college, so I can't feel too bad on missing out on the Amiga.

    The Amiga was basically the next Gen Atari 800. It was created by a bunch of ex-Atari engineers and funded by Atari until... Commodore came along and swiped it up from underneath Atari. The Atari ST was basically the next Gen Commodore 64 after the owner of Commodore sold the company and bought Atari.

    The open system was the main reason for the Amiga’s success: there were 3 times as many games released on the Amiga as there were released on the NES. Unlike the NES, where half of its games were made in Japan, half of the Amiga’s games were made in the UK, with the United States second and large parts of the catalog coming from France, Germany, and Japan. There was just more talent from more countries writing games for the Amiga.

    The Amiga was incredible for 1985, but the lack of proper updates really screwed it when the 90s rolled around. More sprite capabilities, more sound channels, more blitter features were needed, but it relied too much on fantastic programmers manipulating the out of date hardware to make it seem like it was more powerful than it actually was. Way more work for what other systems were doing by design at that time.

    What a fantastic overview. Cheers Dave. A truly, truly stunning computer, light years ahead of it's time. Unfortunately, badly let down by poor management. Then again, the PC was catching up fast and 3rd party audio and GFX cards would make the PC's 'win' inevitable. Of course, the consoles applied a wee bit of pressure too. Still, it's legacy will live forever. I still have my A500 and A1200, but have taken the source code and assets from the software, including several games, that I wrote waay back then, and transferred them into VSCode. Adding the fantastic Amiga Assembly extension (+ UAE emulator), I now have a development system equally light years ahead of what I was using on the real Amiga (ASM-One). The only 'hard bit' is trying to read that old source code and remember exactly what the code is doing. Still, I now have the internet infinite library to help....info overload!

    The Amiga truly amazed me as kid, no other computer since gave me that 'voodoo magic' feeling ever again. As time moved on I always kept using and upgrading Amiga's as a hobby to this day and brings me joy and can still be amazed how 'modern' it feels all those decades later. The buttery smooth multitasking OS that's simple but so elegantly designed and easy to manipulate via shell script and Arexx. As we speak my A1200 equipped with a PiStorm32 is playing internet radio while being connected to 5Ghz wifi and Paula in 14 bit mode still sounds good even by today's standards. A few tips for desoldering... It definitely helps to add flux, and sometimes to add fresh solder as well, so it mixes with the old solder. Also, even with the desoldering station (I have the same Duratool / Zhongdi station), it can help to hold the board vertically, or even tilt the board slightly towards the bench. That assists the desoldering gun, so it's not working against gravity. The original solder container on the Duratool were plastic. Mine eventually melted / imploded, when I left it on too long. lol They replaced those with glass containers, which are much better. One issue I had, is the nozzle/heater got blocked solid... I had to replace the whole nozzle assembly, twice. I learned to always clean the nozzle with the cleaning wire after each use, and leave the wire in the nozzle before turning the station off.

    • @electronash
      @electronash 2 місяці тому

      It was quite common for linear regulators to fail on old computers etc, btw. I guess a lot of the reason is thermal cycling, which can eventually break the internal wire bonds, or maybe even cracks the silicon? So many times, you will see linear regulators, on a heatsink which is nowhere near large enough. (the amount of heat depends on the average current draw, the input vs output voltage, etc. but still.)

    It had a feeling. In a dark room my best mate, who owned an A500, put the disk in, and the sound (on a fairly good speaker) went on, then the animation started (f.e. Platoon). Goosebumps, man. Like a cinematic trailer. My next machine that could reach NEARLY the same effect, was an Xbox 360. But still, that wasn't unique. The Amiga was 'the one', like Neo in Matrix.

    I was always afraid of using Amiga assembly language 😱... (and used blitz basic)... It's probably why i started assembly on C128 few months back... 😁

      @@DavePoo2 It was mainly extreme lack of time... I probably needed 48h day back then. Now I have time and my first computer was C128, that's why I give it a go with assembler (after I did few C128 BASIC example in Graphic modes) Assembler is just way faster. It took me a while, but it's fun even if I am probably the only visitor on my webpages where everything is documented 😁 That's okay. I have more time to take care of my over 80 stray cats 🐈😺😸 The gang is now on my property and enjoying a good time all inclusive,

    The Amiga was the first multimedia machine, before the concept really existed. If the internet had been available/affordable a few years earlier, or indeed if CD-ROM drives had hit the market just a few years earlier, then in both cases the Amiga would likely have been the best-placed machine to take advantage.

      I didn't change any settings. I'm using it with a Dell 24" Monitor www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B095721RV6/
