  • My longest video ever, I'm going to take a SEGA Game Gear from eBay (July 2023), from uboxing, repair & doing a RetroSix CleanScreen screen mod upgrade.
    Luke from RetroSix has a video about preping the Game Gear for this mod, you can watch that here • CleanScreen Game Gear ... - It's not quite the way I did it, but I did take some advice from that.
    Not everything about this mod went to plan, and I had to hand wire the mod (as opposed to using a wire free ribbing kit), so this video is not designed as a tutorial, this is just me going through everything I did to get this working. But if you are hand wiring this mod then it might be some help to you.
    It's a long video, so chapter links are provided if you want to skip to the bits you are interested in. You can skip past the uboxing and repairs if you are just interested in the screen mod.

      Sega would have given me a big load of cash for such "future tech"

    Nice job dave, it's well worth doing this mod, like I said in your stream I've done mine with a screen from China, think mine has even more wires, I also put the smd caps in making it a lot easier to close.

      It definitely was well worth it, and I really enjoy the game gear a lot more now. The ceramic caps are working, don't know if they are better than the originals but they won't leak, so that's a plus. I'll probably do a quick follow up video to measure the current draw of this Vs the original.

    Thanks for uploading this, helped me get it working on the 2 chip - dat 4 & 5 needed grounding to center the display randomly. Strange as the 1 chip was pretty easy to do

    Nice bit of trouble shooting there. These mods are getting better all the time. Enjoy playing the games.

      Thanks. Yeah, I love this mod, it's a huge quality of life improvement for the game gear. I've been playing a lot of Sonic!

      I think this is supposed to be one of the easier mods. But I didn't have the wire free kit, so it took a bit longer. And the newest cleanscreen should be easier to wire (shouldn't have to do those 2 wires to the LCD pins).

    Jam in a new replacement case.

      The case is ok. The screen scratches are not visible when playing, only when it's off.

    Hi Dave, I watched this video a few weeks ago and it kickstarted my previous passion of game gear repairs - it's costing me a fortune 😂
    Anyway, another excellent video. What make of scope do you use?

    • @DavePoo2
      @DavePoo2  9 місяців тому +1

      Nice work! I've got the Rigol DS1054Z 4-channel scope. That model is about 7 years old now, and although it's very good, it's worth noting that Rigol have just come out with a replacement model for it (the DHO814), so if I was getting a scope now I would look at getting that one instead. @@DavePoo2 Thanks, looks good.
      I'm not entirely sure how they work but I've watched some videos on UA-cam including some from Luke from retrosix so I'm sure I'll suss it out.
      Any plans to do the VGA mod on the Game Gear?

    • @DavePoo2
      @DavePoo2  9 місяців тому +1

      @@bordellobrotherz No plans for the VGA mod. I'm very happy with the retro six screen as is. I don't think the GG will look so good on a big screen, and I'm not likely to play it attached to a monitor.
      If you are wondering about oscilloscopes then I recommend this video from EEVBlog ua-cam.com/video/Iq4QlfH-oqk/v-deo.htmlsi=b5lR38sBZ23MgLyX

    12:37 I'm not sure that putting an antistatic bag there is a good idea. They are "antistatic" because they are slightly conductive :)

    • @DavePoo2
      @DavePoo2  11 місяців тому +1

      Slightly, meaning if the Game Gear managed to put out 10,000V then it might start conducting.
